In which Michael Steele displays the race card to the other players

before returning it to the bottom of the deck (pdf)

MICHAEL STEELE: And I think the President is absolutely right and I was very, very happy to hear the administration come out and make that stance with me that in this instance what we heard the--the eruption in the House was inappropriate. It was wrong. But, it was not racism.

BOB SCHIEFFER: Let me ask you about something that doesn't have to do with this interview. The New York Times reports this morning that the President sent word through an intermediary to the Democratic governor up there, David Paterson, asking him to withdraw as a candidate for governor next year because they think he's so far down that it's just going to drag down the party.

MICHAEL STEELE: I--I--I found that to be stunning that the White House would send word to one of only two black governors in the country not to run for re-election. And it just raised a curious point for me. I think Paterson--Governor Paterson's numbers are about the same as Governor Corzine's numbers, yet the President was with Governor Corzine, and I don't know if there's been a request made of Governor Corzine to step down in New Jersey. So I--I just find it to be stunning and also rather bold.

BOB SCHIEFFER: Well, you don't think he's asked him not to run because he's black?

MICHAEL STEELE: Oh, I don't think that, but I just find--I mean look, you--you have so few--if you're looking--if you're saying it's the numbers, then why isn't there a call for those other Democrat governors who have low numbers who are in trouble as well? So I just think that it's--it's just a curiosity for me that the President would inject, or the White House would inject itself into that debate when it's--I don't think it's appropriate nor necessary, because it's a primary. If he's going to be challenged he'll be challenged. And he'll survive it or not survive it.

Just as I find it to be stunning that Bob Schieffer chose, for some obscure reason, to burn up more than half of the screen time he gave one of the only one african-american Chairmen of the RNC to respond to the President's thoughts on health care discussing race.

Which, naturally, they both agree is irrelevant to the health care discussion, but it makes a terrific segue to discussing Governor Paterson, for some possibly related obscure reason.

So I just think that it's -- it's just a curiosity for me that Michael Steele would inject, or that Face the Nation would inject race into that story when it's -- I don't think it's appropriate nor necessary.

Rather bold, even.

Capital G says:

Barack Hussein acted stupidly by getting involved in the NY Governor race. Is Zero going to step down and not run when (not if) his numbers are down?

The Democrats have made their bed and now the usurper doesn't want to sleep in it anymore.

Democrats and Zero's administration have all thrown the race card around quite liberally for imaginary causes - one of those cards was bound to played right back.

Steele has an excellent point.

Why is the black Governor being singled out? Zero, Steele and Paterson should get together for a beer summit to see if Zero's racist request can be resolved.

Halloween Jack says:

Steele's quite the go-to guy if you want someone who will put his foot in his mouth, with such vigor that he starts kicking himself in his tonsils, on any random subject, whether it's trying to rationalize an opposition to government-run health care with a defense of Medicare, or pretending to still possess gonads after getting slapped down by Rush Limbaugh. He's the sort of fellow who would bring his own football over to Lucy Van Pelt's house.

And Capital G: By "Zero", do you mean the president? Because an uneducated person might mistake his initial for a zero? Is that your big joke there? Well, good for you, just don't quit your day job, assuming.

Tickedoff2 says:

Halloween Jack: We do not currently have a president. I would feel confident stating Capital G was referring to the usurper that is currently squatting in the White House.

Everyone seems to understand the reference to Zero, but you. Perhaps you should get out more.

Reaganite Republican says:

You know, I had a genuine post-racial feeling with this guy- not empty rhetoric like Obama, seemed to me he was largely focused on issues/campaigns... so what's THIS all about?

I've defended him on my blog more than once and gave him the complete benefit of the doubt, too- although a bit out of his depth, I thought he'd grow into the job- I like his personality, and hey- at least the guy's got a sense of humor.

But after NY-23 I lost most respect for him... that's largely his fault for letting it go down like that-- he's the boss, and it was botched, that's all I know.

Hey Mike, I'm not afraid of you, man- unless you're referring to your ability to quarterback us through the 2010 midterms that are the one last hope for this country.

We need to get that right, so I'm sure you'll understand it if you get benched-- nothing personal, and CERTAINLY nothing racial about it... you're just disappointing us, that's all.
