Pagan Rites for Queens GOP Council Candidate

Halloran, First Muggle of Hogwarts, or something

Forget the mayoral, comptroller and public advocate races. The best political show in town is taking place in Bayside, Queens where leaders are wrestling with the question of whether a strong Republican city council nominee should be forced from his race -- just because he's a card-carrying pagan.

The candidate in question is GOP council nominee Dan Halloran who was revealed in a September 17 story in the Queens Tribune to be a member of a religious organization that is, well - heathen. Here's how the Tribune described it:

"Halloran is the 'First Atheling,' or King, of Normandy, a branch of the Theod faith of pre-Christian Heathen religions assembled in the Greater New York area. A group of dedicated fellow pagans swear their allegiance to him through oaths of fidelity, allowing luck from a series of ancient gods - specifically the 'Norse' or 'Germanic' gods Odin, Tyr and Freyr - to pass through the King to his kinsmen."

In a website that quickly disappeared after the Trib story ran, Halloran wrote: "We believe in and honor the Gods and Goddesses of the North, spirits of the land, and the memories of our ancestors," he wrote.

That sounds tailor-made for participation in the Bloomberg-Quinn axis now ruling City Hall, but the story has stirred up big problems in Queens along with a different kind of debate about religious tolerance.

Up until the story ran, Halloran was the odds-on favorite to win the November general election against newcomer Kevin Kim who won last week's Deocratic primary against a crowded field seeking to fill Tony Avella's vacated seat.

Now all bets are off, and City Hall news blog reports today that Republican leaders are negotiating to swap Halloran for Paul Vallone, member of the illustrious Queens Democratic clan who lost to Kim in the primary.

Reports City Hall's Chris Bragg, Halloran would get a judgeship instead (presumably since paganism is tolerated much more on the bench than in the council.) This is easier said than done, however, because Halloran hasn't been an attorney for the required 10 years. One solution broached by Queens GOP leaders, reports Bragg, is to nominate Halloran "regardless" and worry about "the legal ramifications later." Sounds right to us.

That might be enough for your average mini-scandal, but there's more: Halloran is calling foul on the story - not because he's ashamed of his religious affiliation ("I am not comfortable with injecting my religion into my politics," he told the Trib. Hear Hear!), but because a Kim campaign consultant also happens to be the VP of the Queens Tribune, and because Queens congressman Gary Ackerman, who founded the paper and still holds a chunk of it, used to be Kim's boss and who urged his old employee to make the race, says City Hall.

Kim appeared this morning in City Hall plaza along with other Democratic council primary winners to endorse Bill de Blasio for Public Advocate. Asked about his rival, he offered the politically savvy response of any frontrunner. "I don't want to comment on anyone's religion," he said. "It's up to the Republicans who they nominate."

He did acknowledge that Tribune VP Michael Nussbaum (a veteran Queens Democratic party player who was nailed on a bribery rap in the Donald Manes scandal, oh and who also organized Democrats for Bloomberg in 2005) is a paid consultant to his campaign and that he used to work for Ackerman as a constituent advisor. "You'll have to ask the Tribune about their articles," he said. "It has nothing to do with me."

Actually, religion aside, Halloran describes his politics on his website as: Republican, Conservative, Libertarian, and...Independence Party Candidate not *just* Republican. It is not at all surprising that his own party is turning on him. Today's Neo-Republicans are infamously anti-everything not conservative Christian.

Isaac Bonewits says:

Your arrogance and creedism in this article isn't much better than that shown by the Religious Reich loonies in the Republican Party.

My politics are the polar opposite of Halloran, but he still has the right to run for public office without people mocking his faith.

Of course, Pagan Republicans, like Black, Latino, and Gay ones, should know better than to think there is any real place for them in the Republican Party.

And here I thought the Village Voice was a "liberal" paper. Proof that "liberal" and "conservative" are both the same in practice and another reason why I haven't read this rag on a regular basis since 2006.

Pete says:

It never ceases to amaze me how in our FREE country that this kind of crap continues to go on. Contradictions abound...

We complain when politicians are unreliable, or found to be untrustworthy, yet more of the same get voted back in... and thier religious backrounds don't seem to be focused upon during that time. (as it shouldnt be at ANY time for anyone...but)

The same story continues... The general public wants to have thier OWN private religious freedoms, yet can't seem to swallow that others deserve the same respect & freedoms without condemnation for it.

Perhaps if we focused More on the Individuals Capabilities and qualifications for running for office rather than on what religion, race, sex or sexual orientation they are, we might get some better results in quality; and learn something positive in the process.

What I do walk away with after reading this artical is this: The writer of this article {as well as the writers of the Tribune articals refered to} have little real quality or useful information to write about Halloran {and likely others} so need to focus upon something other than his capabilities. that to me, is Opinion....not news. Its no wonder we have little faith in quality of reporters these days.

First muggle of hogwarts really? Thats just rude, making fun of somebodys religion instead of researching it before writing an article is as bad as writing an article about Obama and using the N-word. Don't they teach you ettiquette in journalism classes, yes we have freedom of speech, but it's still makes you an asshole when you put that caption on the picture.

Neville Brown says:

It is incredible that you attack a person on the basis of their religion! If he was Jewish, would you attack him for that? IF you did any decent research you would find that the ethos of his religion is far superior to what is traditionally practiced in politics, and they actually believe in practicing what they believe. Yes, that is seriously scary in a Republican. Denigrating someone's religion is a low act. It would seem that Mr Halloran brings far more qualities and dignity to the position than is displayed by your trashy rag or your Editors. BTW Editors are supposed to EDIT! It is the Editor's responsibility that this tripe even went to press.

I'm by no means Republican, can't stand them personally but i, too, am Wiccan, which is another of the Pagan religions. This is really sad and pathetic.
I think the best way to state an opinion on this subject was written by a friend, Gorm,

"it does reflect the hypocricy of religious freedom in the US; one can be as openly religious as they want, so long as they are of the majority faith."

Erin Lale says:

I met Dan Halloran many years ago at a heathen gathering (he is a Theodsman, I am an Asatruar, those are both heathen religions). He is as straight-arrow as they come. I didn't know he'd gone into politics; when I knew him, he was a cop. I hope he wins, because we need more honest, law-abiding people in politics. I'm disappointed that a respected newspaper would call him "first muggle (meaning person without magic) of hogwarts (a fictional magic school)". That's a little bit like calling the Dalai Lama "first Sith Lord of the Jedi Academy". Mocking Eastern religion is no better than mocking heathen religion.

I'm also asatru, we believe in Odhinn, Tyr, Frey, Freyja and the other Gods and Godesses of the norse pantheon. Our religion is sometimes refered to as "the viking's religion" and this is one reason people make fun of us. They imagine we walk around wearing horned helmets or something.

Part of our creed is about being honest, taking responsibilities for our actions and telling the truth. So, yes, a norse practitioner who is also a politician does seem a bit strange. I cannot give my opinion about this man, I don't know him.

Thank you to all the people who posted here to defend our right to our faith.

Ulfrbrand says:

Many of us pagans have strong morals that we held dead to us and to offend us like this is a huge shot to what we are now. Yes violence was a past for us, but if one was to look closely to history it was the same for all religions. It is great to see a heathen politician, someone who can fight for our rights as pagans. That is why people do not want him on a council, they see him as a threat to the Christian Status Quo. If he was a non-white he would be voted in because he was a visible minority, but as he is a religious minority he is sent to the curb. This is sickening. Also the comment under the picture is extremely offensive and I hope there is an apology made.

I happen to have met Dan Halloran and some of his folk are my dearest friends. All are good, honorable people! I have no stake in this election because I do not live in NY but I need to have my say in this. If you would never have known his religious beliefs he'd still be the Republicans darling! This is party sacntioned bigotry pure and simple. Funny how the so called "party of the constitution" can be such hypocrites. Sadly, the Grand Old Party is not so grand anymore!!

I also forgot to mention that I, too, am a heathen. We value honor, integrity, courage, perseverence, fifelity. Oh yeah...can't have that in politics. Sounds like we will never have real change!

I'm sorry, is there something you wish to share with the rest of us?

I hope Dan doesn't get swapped out--but sadly, it wouldn't surprise me if that happened. The Christofascists that have control of the Republican Party probably heard about this race and sent down word that Dan Lord was not to be within 50 feet of an electoral campaign...because, y'know, the GOP wouldn't want to be known as having any actual diversity or anything.

Anti-Pagan comments in the "liberal" Village Voice? A new low. I hope you decide an apology is in order.

Imagine how much trouble you'd be in if you picked on a Jewish politician, or a Jewish anyone else, for his religious affiliation?

I'm Wiccan, and making such comments against Pagan non-Xtians is an insult. You should know better.

Just because Christianity is one of the biggest religions of the day does not mean that there aren't other religions out there entitled to the same protections and rights as the rest of them. Alan I totally agree with you...the values that we follow are *excuse the sarcasm* deplorable and Fates forbid someone with those virtues be put into a position of power. And Comparing our religion to a children's book series....come on now, show some real intelligence inside that thick skull of yours and do a bit of research before you start spouting off things you don't understand. But honestly, what can I expect from a religion that doesn't even understand its own roots in Judaism.

Jew - Nation-wrecking parasite or something
Christian - Anti-scientific, inbred retard or something
Muslim - Mass-murdering pedophile or something

More and more people know the media is a joke today, and failure "journalists" like Tim Robbins illustrate my point exactly.
