What Scorsese and All the Rest Know About Roman Polanski That Maybe You Don't

If it's weird to you that every filmmaker you've ever liked is taking Roman Polanski's side in the curent controversy, perhaps it's because you don't know Polanski like we know Polanski.

Sure, it seems obvious: Polanski raped a kid, Polanski fled the country, Polanski should pay for his crime. But if all that were true, why would the world's most prominent filmmakers and artists sign a petition demanding his release? I'm not just talking cranks like Pedro Almodovar. Good, stand-up Americans like Wes Anderson and Alexander Payne are demanding that justice be served by forgetting about all this rape business. And if you knew Roman Polanski like we know Roman Polanski, you would surely understand how artistically narrow-minded it is to treat him like a rapist just because he raped someone.

Maybe you've been reading The Smoking Gun, which has posted the details of the 1977 rape -- and, yes, on the Internet those details sure seem graphic. But you have to understand: There was no Internet back then!

Use your sense memory, people. It was a different time -- the heady days of 1970s Hollywood -- and, as the great Stanislavski said in his seminal work, "Building a Character," there is truth-truth and then there is artistic-truth. Rape is life!

Maybe you don't know that Roman Polanski is a Holocaust survivor. And that his wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson family. If you knew that, you would probably feel bad for him, and forgive him for raping a child. Why DO bad things happen to good people? It's weird.

Maybe you don't know that Roman Polanski is not just a filmmaker, but a really really good filmmaker. And certainly you don't know that he was on his way to a film festival when apprehended. And you must not know that film festivals are historically sacred ground, havens of pure cinema where people buy and sell everything but their souls remain intact.

Maybe you aren't aware -- and really, thanks to author Robert Harris for pointing this out in today's New York Times --that "Mr. Polanski's own young children, to whom he is a doting father, want him home. " If you had known that, surely you would have forgiven him by now. If he's not around to raise his kids, who would prevent them from getting raped by good people?

Maybe you don't know that Roman has suffered enough. It's actually a fact! "The real tragedy," confirms Patrick Goldstein in the L.A. Times, "is that he will always, till his death, be snubbed and stalked and confronted by people who think the price he has already paid isn't enough." That is a tragedy. With all that's been going on, I really have a newfound respect for rapists that get snubbed. That Oscar Roman got was really fucking confrontational. Asshole statue.

Maybe you don't know that there is a movie that proves everything! Not really about whether or not Roman raped that kid -- because he did so that's not an open question -- but about how the judge was whack. When you really think about it, it was that judge that pushed Roman over the edge into raping that kid. Does that timeline add up? Julian Schnabel says yes so believe it.

Maybe you don't know that Roman is old. Like, too old to rape more girls. It's weird how criminals get older and then turn nice, cause old people are generally really nice I've found. Did you see The Bucket List?

Related: "Amid all the noise," writes Movieline's Stu Van Airsdale, "no one has yet to really mention the most unthinkable consequence overshadowing all of this: that Polanski, 76, could die in jail, either fighting his extradition in Switzerland or withering in a cell in Los Angeles. Surely that couldn't be justice, could it?" Surely not! Justice would have been for Roman to have served his time back in the day, which is why he fled. Aha!

Maybe you don't know that there is this question of Why Now? Why, after all these years, was Roman Polanski apprehended now? Glenn Beck has some theories on this, involving the Swiss and NBC and Czar Cass Sunstein, that will blow your mind.

And finally, maybe you aren't aware that the "victim" Samantha Geimer is totally over it. She is! So why are you still holding a grudge? Oprah says that in order to live your best life, you have to forgive others for rape. I really believe that. Rapist, heal thyself.

Sam says:

I'd normally assume this was satire, but it's so close to what some are saying in all earnestness it's hard to tell.

I guess the one reason why I still think it is satire is that you couldn't even bring yourself in jest to write that it was OK because girl's mom was too permissive or the girl herself was promiscuous, as some of the sincere defenders have done.

It's clearly satire. My favorite line: "If he's not around to raise his kids, who would prevent them from getting raped by good people?"

My comment was meant to be ironic. Ms Benedikt is obviously being satirical. I was just (a little to cryptically, I guess) joining her in mocking the outrageous defenses and rationalizations being offered by Polanski supporters.

Excellent satire, but don't be surprised if lose a couple cocktail party invitations from the "deep thinker" set. At least in the US, Hollywood is a place where an actor's talent may and bank account may grow, but too often at the cost of their intelligence. No wonder why our country is upside down with these rapist apologists surrounding us. May I request another article on the idiocy that is Whoopi Goldberg?

It's unfair to call the guy a rapist. He was convicted of sex with a minor. You could call him a pedophile but don't call manslaughter 'murder'. Champagne and quaaludes are a bad combo, horny and bad judgement.
Maybe Polanski thought he was seducing Jodi foster's character from Taxi Driver, but we know life is not 'fare'.

Moth says:

whoh! "Satire," is it? Well, it's a fine item and I thank you. The situation is a great opportunity to review the law of cause and effect. Roman has been beating the game for a long while...it's ALWAYS edifying to do so. But the pendulum swings back.

You see, the U.S. prosecution mind set HATES anyone who gets away. Period! Next, the First Universal Rule of Contemporary Survival When You Are On The Run is MAXIMUM INVISIBILITY.

For outlaws it is the only factual hope, the only factual protection. But Roman says, "screw 'um." He wants to be world renowned AND beyond the reach of his personal history, all at the same time. It's contrary to the core reality of how shit works.

They have his artistic ass now! And the Man is delighted!! Such banal games. Roman was weak to run. But he got super scared and said, "...call the airport!!"

So all these years he has resided in the dumpster of his own mind! He has not been comfortable with his own shadow for a long, long time. Not that fundamentalist sexual debauchery doesn't have strong historical roots, mind you. Plus, NO situation is what it appears to be...there are always a myriad of underlying and often mitigating factors.

Roman has already paid that chick enough $$$ to make her happy. Look at her pictures: she is fucking delighted!! Let's admit she never would have had this windfall were it not for her "experience." Plus, what you might call "freak," is simply a common occurrence in Hollywood (and many locations across the globe.) It may not play well in central Nebraska but that's the cold truth of it.

All factors considered?? Roman HAS paid a FAR bigger price having run off than the system can or will impose. It is now just a big dollar, media circus.

But it is worth it, I am sure!! A billion dollars in world-wide publicity for a mere 3 million in legal fees. ;-) Piece of cake!!

(oh, just a thought. Have you noticed that Sharon Tate never looked very happy ... just the contrary. I wonder how many people celebrate Charles Manson's birthday?)

great writing piece! About time someone detailed and criticized the outrageous support Polanski is getting from some hollywood types. As if we should take anything Woody Allen says about having sex with underage girls seriously. And please, lets get Whoopi Goldberg off of the View. She has clearly shown herself to be mentally unfit.

Posted On: Thursday, Oct. 1 2009 @ 2:21PM
SG says:

I think Rob is onto something here. As a consolation prize for getting away, Roman should have the option of instead of going to jail now, he can just send his bait and tackle, and continue to live free! How about it, Roman? Are you willing to "let bygones be bygones" with your own body?

Posted On: Thursday, Oct. 1 2009 @ 6:03PM
Shari says:

No one is willing to defend Sharon Tate's murderer(s), and she (they) have actually been paying their debt to society for 40 years. I guess that's what happens when you're just a regular person...

Roman may have paid 'restitution' and spent some time in the slammer (emphasis on SOME), but he should be treated like the common criminal that he is. Who cares if he dies in jail? Do we consider that of any other rapist????? People are outrageous.

If we can't prosecute Bush's cronies for torture and war crimes or arrest the boys at AIG, at least we can carry out a 32-year old celebrity arrest warrant that would really make a nice notch on an LA Prosecutor's belt. The Wheels of Justice turn restlessly forward. Halleluah!

Gregory A. Butler says:

Convicts have a name for people like confessed child rapist and sodomizer Roman Polanski.

Baby Raper.

They don't care how many oscars he has, or how many high class rich people in Beverly Hills think he's a genius.

They judge him by his bad acts - raping and sodomizing a 13 year old girl, who was begging and pleading "NO!" the whole time.

Baby Raper Polanski will not have "suffered enough" until he has suffered about 20 years or so of daily beatings at the hands of his fellow inmates (with a bit of shower room sodomy thrown in every once in a while just for fun - you DO like anal sodomy, don't you, Roman?)

There is no defense for Roman Polanski - he is a confessed child sodomizer who belongs in a California state prison, no matter how good "Chinatown" was or how many oscars "The Pianist" won!

It says a lot about the mindset of Hollywood people that they have no problem with, and readily excuse Polanski's actions while they totally abhor Elia Kazan and still feel he was morally unfit and deserved being ostracized.

So? Tell it to a judge. He admitted rape of a child. End of story. Don't really care if he walked on water, fed the masses, or puts Mother Teresa to shame with good works. Lots of kids want their criminal fathers home. No excuse.

Creative talent? Who cares? This is an unspeakable crime against a child. None of this matters.

"She's over it." Bull. You don't "get over" being raped. Especially as a child.

Arthur says:

Everyone else seems to agree on it, but I question the 'wrongness' of Polanski's action. Realistically, I suppose that there should be "some sort of law" regarding sex with minors, but I certainly think that for Polanski to deserve this current predicament there should have to be evidence that he imposed himself on Mrs. Geimer. Age differential alone is not ground for rape accusations, but an older man manipulating a child might be. And they are NOT the same thing.

Posted On: Saturday, Oct. 3 2009 @ 2:49PM
RH Potfry says:

When you consider all that Polanski has been through-- the concentration camps, the murder of his wife-- you absolutely must conclude that he showed remarkable restraint in not killing Geimer.

Polanski a Hero says:

Arthur: ' but I certainly think that for Polanski to deserve this current predicament there should have to be evidence that he imposed himself on Mrs. Geimer. Age differential alone is not ground for rape accusation'

What perdicment. The guy has been wined and dined by Politicians and the elite across Europe for years his punishment consisted of not being able to go to America a punishment I still suffer from.

Polanski drugged and raped his victim, but your assertion that for Polanski to be convicted something extra should happen because he is Polanski shows you missed the irony on this blog.

Certainly there are cases that deserve your attention on this matter. A man in prison for 8 years because because he was having a relationship with a 17 year old boy. A women given 4 years for having sex with her student 17 years old. A man given 2 years for kissing a 15 year old girl. These cases are very punitive and somewhat mad. But defending Polanski a man who has a history of sleeping with underage girls and has stated that it is natural to want to sleep with little girls on the record. He also believes deep down all men want to do this! No-one wants to defend the common man (or women) in the street.

Hypocrisy runs rife in this case.

Poland has just out through new regulations: the forced castration of men having sex with children under the age of 15-yet high ranking politicians have jumped in the foray trying to protect this man.

France: New rules to protect children by compulsory history checks where the goverment and organisations can look into your history to see if your a threat (BIG BROTHER ANYONE). The culture minister saying Polanski is to talented and America is sinister for even trying the case.

Infact all the countries in this fiasco have very punitive laws in the name of protecting children yet this guy gets a 'free pass' it can't just be money and power here, there must be a real disdain for the man in the street.

Sakhi says:

Whoever doesn't want to face the court (or get imprisoned) in such a case--- Polanski, all the 'creative geniuses' that support him (Oprah, Whoopi, the French Presidents who've dined with him, the people who gave him the Oscar, the people who have been working with him instead of boycotting for all these years, etc.), all his other supporters, and all the rest of the people, who think Polanski has suffered enough --- should be given the following treatment:
1) They should be sodomized themselves with at least a foot-in-radius hot iron rod, then they should be castrated. Then they should be paid $$$ (millions of dollars) to keep them happy for the rest of their lives. And furthermore, the person who commits the sodomy and castration to them, should start apologising (and even crying) to them- very very sincerely.
2) Their 13-yr-old daughters, and sisters should also be sodomised and raped by old loonies, such as Mr.Polanski himself... the only criteria for picking such loonies MUST be;
(a) They must be 'geniuses', and
(b) They must pay the said 'chicks' enough '$$$' to make her happy
(c) They must feel real 'sorry' for what they've done afterwards.

If the above two steps are taken, I can assure you, no-one would have a problem...
* The people who hate child-rapists & sodomites, would see that they have received a similar treatment, and be content with the justice serviced.
* The Polanski supporters (read mental cases themselves), would naturally have no problem with these steps, since obviously, they think that such treatment can be repented with literal pay-back and feeling of guilt.
Problem solved! :D (*rolls her eyes*)

P.S. @ 'Polanski has stated that it is natural to want to sleep with little girls on the record' --> Even a 'quack' psychologist can tell you that a person with such a rational, belongs in a mental asylum...Let him make his 'genius' Oscar winners from there, for all I care!

Posted On: Tuesday, Oct. 6 2009 @ 6:26AM
Sakhi says:

P.P.S. Forgot to add in the 'MUST' criteria above... These sodomites and rapists MUST also be people who've suffered personally tragedies (to make things fair), like holocaust/ murders in the family/ even people who've suffered child-molestation (why not?).
It'll be absolutely blissful to see no end to all the filth that people try and keep getting away with!! *shakes her head in utter disappointment*

Hollywood and the like, condition this kind of behaviour. The grooming of very young girls in the fashion industry is a case in point. A friend of mine in the business has told me, to make it very young girls are pressured in to having sex with these power cartels. The power balance is stacked against them.

Right after he made his flight from justice, Polanksi started an affair with 15 year old Kinski who had been the muse of Wen Wenderson from the age of 10, a fellow signee to the 'Free Polanki' parade. She was signed up for many nude photos and film roles before the age of 16. Polanksi made her famous by nudging his contacts in her favour. He was showing the wannabe's that if you play my game (our game Hollywood etc) you can make it big. This a ruse (Or grooming), if you allow me to sleep with your little girls, fame and money are yours and it works. Polanski and the like used girls like dirty tissues. Tatum O'neil once said that she felt freaked out when her fellow actress friend was asked to bring her to Polanski's home. He showed her reels and reels of pornographic films.

The Petition:

The people on the petition come as follows: His fellow friends (Who hung about with him and played his games. Child meat given so often can skew one's perception, certainly). The people he made rich and famous and those who want to work or benefit from the afore-mentioned.

Philistines:

I suppose what galls many so called common people is the way they automatically took the dictatorship line. Levied their considerable might in a clear case of obstruction of justice. Yes only we matter! We do as we please lump it or leave it.

The Politicians:

The Politicians who would have you castrated for kissing a 15 year old boy who you thought looked 26, when you were drunk out of your mind on a Friday night out, yet cry, scream and accuse you of all sorts of things when you try to apply a modified version of the laws they themselves draw up.

Do they think the general public are that stupid. Are we?

It does not matter who did this or how long ago it happened. Rape is a horrific crime that affects the victim's entire life.

If one is unfortunate enough to know all the ins and outs of how rape affects a person, they know that one does not just "get over it."

I believe the victim said she got over it only to keep the media from knocking down her door.

Take it from a child rape survivor, this affects our entire life and should never be taken lightly.

George, what are you smoking? Must be good stuff, cuz your message is completely incoherent, yet you probably think it's the clearest piece of prose we've seen in a while. What the hell are you carrying on about? Well, OK, the first part is understandable (and I agree, I think it's exactly how it is: these guys are tacky swine of that precisely type).

They signed the petition defending Polanski because they are perverts just like him. It takes one to know one.
