A sidebar closes on the
shooting of NYPD Officer Omar Edwards (
pictured) in June by another officer. The confusion that night started when Edwards, gun drawn, chased down a thief who had broken into his car; his fellow officers, coming upon him, didn't know he was a cop, which led to the fatal fusillade. The thief, 42-year-old Miguel Goitia, was apprehended at the scene and
charged with criminal mischief and drug possession. He said he was
beaten by correction officers at Rikers, to which claim commenters at the cop and cop fan board Thee Rant were
unsympathetic. Yesterday Goitia
pleaded guilty and will serve one-and-a-half to two years in prison.
No charges were filed in Edwards' death.
