16 Angry Women Attempt to Protest the World's Biggest Douche. Or, The Anti-Tucker Max Story, "I Hope They Serve Subpoenas in Hell"

Tucker Max is a douchebag. Just ask him. The infamous blogger, "author," and self-proclaimed "raging dickhead" -- the latter most often in the form of objectifying and degrading any woman he comes in contact with -- is also the recent subject of the autobiographical film I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, adapted from Max's book of the same name. Fittingly, the movie's street promotion included all-black posters slapped around the city, brandishing appropriately offensive Max mantras like BLIND GIRLS NEVER SEE YOU COMING and STRIPPERS WILL NOT TOLERATE DISRESPECT (JUST KIDDING). And wouldn't you know it, feminists don't appreciate stripper jokes.

Sixteen such feminists gathered in the lobby of the Baruch College Library on East 25th last night to make counter-attack ads -- we're talking construction paper and magic markers -- to wheatpaste over the originals. One hot pink poster read, RAPE JOKES: AS FUNNY AS TUCKER MAX (NOT FUNNY). Some others were REAL MEN RESPECT WOMEN, YOUR DAUGHTERS WILL READ THIS SHIT!, I HOPE THEY SERVE SUBPOENAS IN HELL, and RAPISTS=PSYCHOS. (Wait, what?) Katrin Redfern, tonight's organizer, explained that I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell ads have already been banned by the Chicago Transit Authority, but because there was no particular CTA-like organization to target in New York City, those offended "had to go a little more grassroots."

Posters completed, a girl in all black, who'd been making out with her girlfriend for the last 20 minutes, stood up to ask in all seriousness, "We ready to rock out?" They were. So the band of ladies, and two uncomfortable-looking gentlemen, marched down 25th Street toward a previously determined construction site. Tucker Max is "so 'stupid frat boy,' except he's like 35," a woman pushing a big orange bicycle told her companion. "It's not shocking, it's just offensive," the other replied. There's also talk of the movie being a "cop out" -- as in not crude enough. Another voice elaborated: "He didn't even just go for it. It wasn't edgy." A collective, "Yeah!" raised up from the group as they approached the offending wall.

But there was a problem. The first ad they'd planned to target was already gone. Someone had spotted it last Friday -- they'd all planned to go out last Sunday, but you can't wheatpaste in the rain -- and now the ad wasn't there. It took 20 minutes in a Bank of America ATM vestibule to regroup. The once-merry band half-heartedly agreed to split up, but not before a brief photo shoot and a cheer of, "Get down with all your fierceness, all your strength and your beauty!" from the photographer.

On the right: Meredith, Times Square leader

The first group set out in search of another Beer in Hell ad in SoHo; the other headed to Times Square to hand out strips of paper bashing Max and his misogynistic ways. The latter ended up at the AMC on 42nd Street, where two of the women sneaked into the theater showing the movie -- one got in by slipping past a ticket-taker in a wheelchair. The audience, a mixture of frat boys and high schoolers that clearly wanted to live out the Tucker Max dream, was not amused. One of a very few young ladies present, explained her interest in the film: "I thought the book looked funny." A guy offered, "It's just like the same thing as The Hangover."

No matter, Meredith, this pack's leader, explained that it was only important that the message "gets out." In the end, there were no arrests, no counter protest, and barely a second glance from the AMC employees. Tucker Max likely still woke up a huge douchebag this morning, but at least his morning paper will tell him just how bad his movie is bombing.

Tucker may be a jerk but he's no worse than the millions of women in America who only fall in love in a framework, that framework primarily being: He has to make at least six figures.
American women are some of the most superficial and materialistic women in the world, easily. Now a movie comes out showing a jerk guy and people become irate, I'm not holding my breath waiting for Hollywood to come out with a movie showing how materialist and superficial American women are.

I'm so glad there are people out there who care enough to take their free time to organize something! So what if they use construction paper and markers, so speaking up isn't valid unless it's done in a corporatized, slick way? The author is so dismissive of what is active citizenry and should be applauded.

Nicolson says:

"Feminists don't appreciate stripper jokes."

That's right--and they don't appreciate "jokes" about assaulting deaf and blind women, "jokes" about stomping on fat women until they choke on their own blood, "jokes" about killing pregnant women in a "funny way", or "jokes" about videotaping a woman having sex without her consent--all of which are things that Fucker Max likes to joke about.

They also don't like referring to women as "cum dumpsters" and saying things like "get away from me or I'll carve a fuckhole in our torso"--both lines from this pathetic excuse for a movie.

This frat-boy douchebag atmosphere contributes to a society in which one of every six women is sexually assaulted in their lifetime. So why don't you drop the condescending tone and pickup a protest sign next time, eh Mackenzie?

well, i just got propositioned in a really graphic way on my two block walk to the grocery store, so frankly i'm pretty happy that anyone is trying to fight against language that incites and glorifies rape.

trying to get media attention was a bad idea, friends. sorry, but it was. that's why i wasn't there. do you remember the riot grrl media blackout? there was a reason for that. when the mainstream media and the mainstream population do not respect your opinions, which, let's be clear, they do not, you have to represent yourself.

so thank you for getting more people to look at the posters and hopefully make a connection between the language of rape and the act.

Tucker Max's Tiny Atrophied Penis says:

All of Tucker Max's ads were pasted up illegally in the first place, so they only lasted a few short days in nearly all locations. Katrin had asked people to e-mail her the addresses where the posters were spotted, then plotted a Google map of the locations, and made copies for us. She was quite organized about the whole thing. We couldn't FIND the posters based upon the sightings because they had already been pasted over - many by legitimate advertisers.
So hence the delays and "slow start" to our outing.
As for the rest of the condescendtion in this article, that's disappointing. Allow me to clarify some things for you in an e-mail.
Also, the men were supportive and enthusiastic - just like us. One came with a female protester and the other alone. Uncomfortable implies someone was forcing them to endure us or something. Gee, sorry this evening wasn't more fun for you!

joe says:

there is HUGE difference between a "jerk guy" and a dude who perpetuates violence, hate, rape etc and makes it all into "jokes".... everything he "jokes" bout is at the expense of women. so um, yeah, a lot different than just your average "jerk"

Molly says:

Yeah so one of the supposedly "uncomfortable" looking guys is my husband, and we were there together. No I didnt rope him in.... he volunteered to come, because Tucker Max makes a mockery of my husband's gender. he wanted to support the protest and show a male face to the public that NO this is NOT an okay way to treat or talk about women. and that REAL MEN respect women, as my sign says.

the author of this article definitely had an agenda going in- which, I guess, should have been expected: make people who stand up against misogyny, violence and hatred look like "the crazies". it makes a better story and it gets more people talking. so from a journalist point of view...ok I get that. Integrity to the real, important issues? hm, not so much.

by the way, you dont have to go see this film to know anything about it or make judgments. the entire script is online. it speaks for itself... as do the posters... as do the books... as everything that spews out of this asshat's mouth does.

so the reporter can trivialize anything I suppose, and pick the one or two strange quotes from our long night of intelligent discussion on lots of topics, and then package it as something entirely different. ah well, thats the media for ya, huh?

Rob says:

Tucker Max is a douchebag, as is the author of this article. These girls seemed like they were having fun with a serious topic --- mainly that the image of women in pop culture (promulgated by men as well as women, btw) is seriously fucked. I can't help but think people unconsciously learn habits from mainstream movies like this, even if the movie is billed as a comedy. All the evidence I need is high school and the interior of almost any frat bar or nightclub.

Posted On: Friday, Oct. 2 2009 @ 1:07AM
Katrin says:

As of yesterday Tucker's poorly written attempt at a script had made $498,403, 75% of which was made on opening weekend. He financed most of it himself, claiming he turned down studio money because he wanted to keep all the profits. It doesn't look like there will be any of those to speak of.

Hopefully this will also prove true of his second book, "Assholes Finish First" (which begs the question, who wants to be first in a game that so lowers the bar for human endeavor).

I'll take heartfelt authentic expression over a corporate media that continues to bring us a 24-hour circus of debasing, valueless material. Furthermore, huge social strides like the right to vote, child labor laws, Social Security, the 40-hour work week, a minimum wage, workplace safety laws, and many other reforms have come not from within the system but from 'ordinary' people bringing these issues to the streets. And they've always been ridiculed at the time and lauded later on, by the very Establishment that sought to undermine (and slander, jail, beat, and kill) them at the time but now takes credit for their achievements. It's in the spirit of a vibrant democracy (which we certainly don't have) not to mock and marginalize people who attempt to challenge louder voices, especially voices that perpetuate disdain and contempt for half the world's population. Long live construction paper and magic markers.

Why is the reporter so dismissive? I bet they were having fun, not 'regrouping'. Wow so critical.

you are all very funny says:

You ladies are very well-intentioned, and congrats to you, Tucker Max is a shit head, but you should really double-check your targets before attacking them. You knew someone from the press would be there. Just a bit of foresight and organization would've helped "get the message out" a bit better. Understand?

Posted On: Friday, Oct. 2 2009 @ 9:26AM
Meredith says:

This article is very dismissive, very sarcastic, and very insulting. The reporter's inane coverage not only misses the entire point, but attempts to belittle accomplished, thoughtful, articulate, organized, and mature women and men taking real action. The reporter also changed the facts and invented more, and obviously doesn't understand what a grassroots direct action campaign even is.

Let's set the record straight:

The group was organized, with a google map will all ad locations mapped out. Men were there, because they were offended by Tucker's version of masculinity. When statements were created, there was no "making out" whatsoever, but a married couple did kiss on the cheek. When the group left to target the ads, some of those ads were covered up by other advertisers- which is actually a good thing. We then broke into small groups, for maximum coverage throughout the city, it was an effective strategic move, not disorganized fumbling in a vestibule.

As for the AMC theater action- we didn't sneak into the theater duping a ticket taker in a wheelchair. No one was in a wheelchair at all, and I stated my desire to stop into the theater for a few minutes before leaving. We handed out statements during the pre-views to those entering the IHTSBIH screening then headed to the lobby. We stood next to the augmented ad, as several people entering the theater commented on the importance of our actions, and expressed interest in feminism in general. The reporter left this part out. I passed out many business cards to those who wanted to get more involved in feminist events, conferences, and actions in NYC.

We accomplished our goals- and the message was received by others, but completely missed and dismissed by the reporter, who had her own agenda.

layla says:

So I came out for this evening as it was a valid effort in taking back the night. I am in the media & I am very busy. I am happy-- doing really well-- really lucky-- My photographs are hanging on the same wall as a Mapplethorpe, Warhol, Walker-- I have a show coming up in Paris then Basel-- I am over the moon.

I am happy & excited & a feminist!

I am part of the group of women who know the importance & value in being alive in this time. i put this knowledge into action in many ways. One of them is in a willingness to take to the streets-- with little more than paper & pen: Our voices will be heard-- it is the time to reclaim the balance-- to let our voice be heard. I wish we had big money behind us-- & lots of time to mastermind something with far greater impacted-- it is again the lack of funding in the women's movement that does not allow us to really rise as we must-- but change is coming-- cells of powerful and affluent women are coming together in ways never seen before-- I have circled the globe twice baring witness to our growing strength in numbers. Amazing talented, fun, brilliant women-- who care about not being raped and blow away for entertainments sake-- whether it is in a theater or in the fields-- hunted like deer-- men killing & destroying what is beautiful for sport.

We have the right not to remain silent- and there are far more than 16 of us-- there are more than 3 Billion women and 3 billion men who are daily effected by the poison that misogyny spreads.

As media makers this is the greatest responsibility of our time. Words are the most powerful & shaping tools that we have.

All life came from women-- we are the givers of life-- and if someone wants to take that for granted-- as many do-- then there becomes a terrible dis-ease on earth-- all are suffering, this amazing sample of concerned citizens, both female & male -- who came out that night are a testaments to the American Dream still being alive-- freedom of speech still alive and kickin-- putting the gurrr back into grassroots. Even as Max Tucker expects all the glory of freedom of speech and yet systematical takes it away from those voicing another opinion by photoshopping their protest posters to read the opposite of what is intended-- virtual rape & censorship in full effect by Tucker and the Frat Boy Mob.

Yes, I wish you had showed up at that Bank of America to wittiness hundreds/thousands taking back the night-- standing up against the mainstreaming of misogyny-- the theme of sex & violence-- the derogation of women has become a multi-billion dollar industry-- porn shops all over the city sell shelves of movies about the raping of young girls, old women-- everything in between...

and now you want to take that into the box office-- the main theaters-- where children walk by these posters--

For each women that gets raped there is a chain reaction-- the lives of whole families are destroyed-- daily-- it is no laughing matter-- it is the laughter that allows the rape to be so systematic.

Just like the dehumanising of Jew's in Hitler's Germany-- this is no less serious of an issue-- it is a toxic poison spreading-- rapidly-- I hope next time there are thousands of us-- and we can bring forth the strength in numbers to reclaim or birth right to walk the streets in freedom & in safely. Let's all meet again next Tuesday-- anyone interested contact me: I will have pictures posted on my blog from the evening-- in a hour or two: www.lovephotography.org --blog top right corner--

we where just getting warmed up-- next time we can take a billboard out in times square-- legally-- we have more tools than we realize and enough people sick of this mess-- it is time to clean-up and take charge.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness-- I take my rights seriously-- this does not make me angry-- it means I am awake, conscious, caring-- an active citizen.

Revolution begins with Personal Evolution.

Let's all begin to raise our voices-- let's come together-- it is a time of celebration-- of coming into our rightful power.

I advocate responsibility-- an awareness of the consequences of our actions-- we all know the effects of propaganda & brainwashing-- we all know that humor is used to dehumanizes-- the Military uses this same tactic all the time-- let's make jokes about them rag heads and then we can just shoot at them-- rape the women-- it is an act of war-- make em scream -- it will be real funny!
..just like killing pregnant woman!

Max Tucker & Gorge Bush Jr. -- they are similar characters-- with a dangerous amount of privilege and appeal to the lowest common denominators... the greed-- the laughter at the value of human life-- the need to kill & destroy for ego's sake--

-- I wish I lived safely in a land where my being was respected-- where I did not have to worry if a fellow woman is late to meet me that she has not been dragged into an alley...

-peace & healing between us.

the quotes from the movie are taken out of context meaning... the entire scene or movie isnt quoted along with it. but follow the link above, find the taken out quotes, and you will find that they carry not only the same message derived from reading it as a standalone, but a much more vile one. in fact it's MORE disturbing to read these quotes "in context"

Report: Disabled People More Likely to Be Victims of Crime

A new study by the Justice Department has found that disabled people are 50 percent more likely to be victims of violent crime than non-disabled people. Michael Rand, a co-author of the study, said, "It’s clear that, overall, people with disabilities are more vulnerable to being a victim of violent crime than others.”

Is it clear why posters saying "blind girls never see you coming" and "deaf girls never hear you coming" are problematic? I'd say they constitute hate crimes, by encouraging certain groups of people to be viewed as easy targets. You don't have to be a feminist, a woman, anything in particular to see the problem with messages like that.

I know many amazing men, many amazing women-- I know all of us are hurting in ways-- it is hard for many of us to bridge communiacation with each other so books like-- men are from mars and women are from venus and movies like max's become best sellers-- cause we live in a capitalist society that bases it's never ending sales pitch on our incecurities-- piting us against each other--

there are people hurting in the world-- these our are shared stories-- Many women are acting out roles perpertuated by proganda that keeps this nation a float-- that which leads us to beleave that we as women are prsribed a value based on our appears-- women subscribe-- to this idea that advertisers of costemtics, diet pills, botox, willingly cutting our bodies open to fill cyber rolls-- and men like max tucker-- his sickness is real too and should be treated acouringly-- I am not advocating the dead penalty or suggesting that we burn him at the stakes--

That is what has happened for thousands of years-- we go forth seeking revenge and there for spin in ever greater circles-- then we come to these places where we look in the mirror and we are all plastic or taking steroids-- we are snorting coke, we are fucking like machines-- our humanity is lost-- anything but the airbrushed must be distroyed!! and that which is fits this critiera must be fuck senseless- the hunter and gather locked away in cublical boxes working a job he hates-- to make money to feed the retail therapy of a wife we now term as a 'gold digger' -- but let's not forget women own less than one precent of the worlds property and wealth and in most places women are traded like cattle amids wedding vows, that silence then even further-- we must break the chains-- no one is happy here-- max tucker is mad, the feminsts are angry, people are just letting on with their days but the currents affect us all... .

If tucker used his artistic voice to share his stories so honestly-- we can appricate that these are the uncomfortable truths of our time-- and thank him for bring them to the surface so that we can address them in public forms as we are doing here.

I would like to dare us all to take a long look in the mirror until we can start to disect what we see-- till we see who we are-- what we can do to heal ourselves-- cause we all need to heal. Dear people-- this is a beautiful time to be alive-- if we are willing to stop long enough to see -- that another world is possible-- not only possible but on the way.

We are the shapers of our own destiny-- let us be mindful of what we ask for-- all of us-- stop-- take a moment and consider deeply-- beyond the neon lights or the silve screen-- what is it we are seeking-- and each day to the actions that we petpetuate-- do the moves that we make take us closer or further away from that goal?

There is no need for us to keep calling each other names-- it defeats the perpose-- we here-- with the time to write back and forth are the ones with the time to help set this world straight-- create balance-- there is room for us all step up to the plate-- make life amazing--

i do not need to be drunk to get some or be able to take some -- and I am certainly not intrested in going to hell after so much hardship in this life--

I am intrested in creating paradise here on earth-- between us all amping down and taking note-- that peace is possible-- that joy matters, that we have a vaule at zero dollars a day-- that life, men and women wymon & males-- who ever you be we could be better-- let's not just bring our parents shit forward-- what ever sickness your mamma and your pappa and your school teachers placesd on you-- why don't we just let it go--

open up to the power our generation has--

let's make more movies, have more debates--

I pray for the best in us to come forth in this moment in time.

We are never the same person twice.
change is the only constant.

may we all change in ways that respect the boundries that exist in respecting the safty of each other through the actions we take--

for every action there is an equal and oppoiste reaction-v-

these ar things that came to light a cenertury ago--

I am looking for the innovative-- this is an invitation to everybody-- to just make it good-- to hold ourselves accountable.

May your journeys be safe and blessed.

//peace//

I don't know anything about this Tucker Max guy, but this article was pretty dismissive and one-sided, I thought.

I'd like to see the author, Mackenzie Schmidt, respond to the comments made by the women who attended this protest and who contradict what she wrote.

Her journalism was incredibly sloppy and dismissive. I used to expect more from the Voice.

Elvis says:

Mackenzie,

On the night of the Tucker Max takedown, you publicly twittered: "I don't remember chasing angry lesbians around midtown until midnight being in my job description."

Two thoughts -

1) Using the word "lesbian" as a negative term - not the smartest tack for a reporter these days, when even mainstream journalism is sensitive to such homophobia.

2) Labeling feminists as lesbians is a tactic as old as the suffragettes - used to deny women the vote, equal pay, and careers in journalism. You just allied yourself with the generations of sexist reactionaries who would have eagerly fought against your right to hold your current job.

It appears this may actually be your first contribution to the Village Voice, or any news publication, since your name produces zero hits on Google. As a word of advice, please take a moment to consider the way your homophobia will be received by future readers.

Such a fantastic group of articulate protesters. But such a horrible article! It really embodied all the stereotypes about young feminists, and failed to cover the real issues of rape culture.

Article was quite enjoyable --

Schmidt doesn't seem to bash the intention of those girls, but the disorganized way in which it was carried out- that's all. Getting so worked up over Max Tucker gives him MORE power so I think it's time to chill out, and move on.

Suzanna says:

This is so out of hand. To Elvis, accusing someone who writes for the Village Voice of being homophobic is a little ridiculous, no? Or most New Yorkers in this day and age.

And going to find the author on Twitter seems out of line unless the account was with the Voice itself.

HAHA Ya'll don't seem to be helping this "angry lesbians" thing.

Feminist says:

Suzanna - Do you have any idea on how bigotry works? Just because someone works for the Village Voice, does not mean they cannot be homophobic. Her Twitter was directed at Village Voice, and that is why it came up. Did you read her Twitter post? It said, "I don't remember chasing angry lesbians around midtown until midnight being in my job description."

She did not use "lesbian" as a compliment. As long as there is homophobia in our society, the term "lesbian" will continue to be used to put feminists down.

Posted On: Tuesday, Oct. 6 2009 @ 11:04PM
Feminist says:

Gracey Girl - Of course, if someone is a feminist, she has to be an "angry lesbian." She cannot be a beautiful, graceful, straight American icon like Gloria Steinem. Or straight men who believe in the crazy notion that women are human beings who deserve equal rights, instead of being raped and getting paid less and ridiculed for being an "angry lesbian" for wanting those rights. Or thoughtful LGBTQ activists who are smart enough to realize that feminism is intricately woven into their struggle - we are all working toward gender equality. As Gloria Steinem says, "when people ask if I am a feminist, I answer, what's the alternative? Being a masochist?" It is disgusting that people use the term "lesbian" as a put down of feminists - neither should be considered dirty words.

CharlesCan'tGetAny says:

As another poster said, this article does embody all the streotypes about young feminists without discussing real issues of rape culture. What was the writer's intention in mentioning the 20-minute make-out session that didn't happen? She was trying to portray young feminists as over-sexed, tempermental, angry lesbians who chant crazy things and are ineffective. It is sad for her because if not for those "crazy" people, she would not be allowed to hold this very same job, to write this piece of yellow "journalism." She would be home, without the right to vote, and considered her husband's property.

Charles - it must be hard that you can't get any "pussy" with your small penis. BTW, the pussy you came from, your mother, must be proud.

The nonsense you espouse here eg "it is time to reclaim the balance" [of wimmins having power] is why you are not taken seriously.

You have dysfunctions when it comes to perceiving reality accurately.

"it is time to reclaim the balance" is just one example of your perspicacity shortcomings.

I understand the protesters anger and outrage over this movie and the reporters response. I ask them though if America's men and women take their moral cues from a movie such as "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell" then this country is already in a great deal of trouble. I am currently reading the book so I can tell you as a man I find some of the content funny yet other parts of it disturbing. I can also tell you it has no bearing on the way I view or treat woman. Max Tucker simply has put into writing what I have heard in restrooms and locker rooms alike. I'm sure he embellishes and pushes the envelop like every other person trying to tell a "good" story. Just take it for what its worth youthful entertainment.
