Barack Obama Nobel Peace Prize FTW (Update: Rightbloggers React!)

Apparently somebody thinks promising to close Gitmo and stop torture, making a speech to the Arab world, and in general not being so much of a dick as most recent Presidents deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

What do we know? Maybe all previous winner Muhammad Yunus' microlending doesn't have the same effect on world peace as a few bold strokes by the President.

Two things to be glad of, though: first, it's nice to have the world's respect again; and second, this is really going to piss off the rightbloggers -- especially the ones who were just telling us Obama was now despised by the global community because Chicago lost the Olympics. Maybe Andrew Breitbart will start a site called "Big Oslo." And the thought of Michelle Malkin's increasingly hoarse cries of "skreeee" will add a little sweetener to our Friday.

Update: It begins! "Don't forget. Yasser Arafat won a Nobel Peace Prize, too." "If today's headlines said, 'Barack Obama Wins Yasser Arafat Prize,'" says National Review's Andy McCarthy, "that would be perfect." The Peace Prize is inherently corrupt!...

Another early meme: Obama must reject the Prize. Otherwise he's a real loser. "If Barack Obama has any political smarts," says Josh Trevino, "he will announce this morning that the Prize is deeply premature, and that he won't go to accept." The Nobel Prize is the final nail in the coffin of Presidencies: Remember, two years after he won his, Teddy Roosevelt was out of a job.

Update 2: "Anyone who understands the reality of the world," says American Elephant, "will understand that this is not an honor for our nation, but additional evidence that Obama's Presidency is a disaster."

All that's left now is for a delegation of space aliens to come to earth and offer Obama the Presidency of the Universe. Then he'll be impeached for sure.

Update 3: This explains everything: "Antichrist Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize." (h/t Alex Koppelman.) Meanwhile Very Serious People pick up the call for Obama to throw it back into the outfield. Time says a good reason it's bad is that... rightbloggers will say so. The liberal media: Is there anything it can't fuck up?

Update 3: Aw hell no, they went there: "I did not realize the Nobel Peace Prize had an affirmative action quota for it, but that is the only thing I can think of for this news." Erick Erickson of RedState also says, "The Peace Prize reaffirms it s a joke. But now a sad joke." Time for conservatives to make their own Peace Prize, perhaps named after Curtis LeMay, and give it to John Bolton. That'll show everybody.

Update 4: The President has accepted the Prize, which is of course a disastrous mistake.

Hell, that's my favorite part of this. Whether he deserves it or not, anything that might make that fat asshole Rush Limbaugh have a stroke is okay in my book.

Unfortunately I think this hurts Obama. It also stirs the hatred pot, which was just settling to a simmer.

Maybe this is part of the Norwegians' nefarious plan to bring down the USA. They are terrorist sympathizers after all, or at least that's what I've heard.

Westcoast reader says:

Wake up. While this may make some on the political spectrum feel better, this is going to play right into the hands of the Republicans. Look at the facts. What has been REALLY accomplished to justify the award? (i) Gitmo=still open; (ii) Iraq=we are still there; (iii) Afganistan= troop numbers likely to increase; (iv) Israel/Palestinian Issue= no progress despite sitting on Israel for months; (v) Iran=clearly lying to the world about nukes. In other words, the European quasi-socialist pacifists see Obama as one of them and think they are helping him. This will not help him in the next election, nor will it help the Dems in Congress in a year.

R. Porrofatto says:

Aside from the undocumented, terrorist-loving Islamofascist Kenyubian's winning it, rightists have a general problem with the whole concept of a "Peace Prize" because it has that pinko pussy word "peace" in it. The last one of their heroes to win it was Henry Kissinger, which was really stretching it to say the least, but that's because they're not very peeance-freeance-minded people. If Nobel had invented, say, oral contraceptives instead of dynamite, maybe the Norwegians would be awarding War Prizes, which the right wing would have even more of a lock on it than the AL does on the All-Star game. Kissinger could win that one, too, and Cheney would be a shoo-in.

The reaction from the right is priceless, but just as funny from the left. When pressed on what he's won, I've seen lefties just respond by saying the "bitter racist rednecks just need to shut up".

I mean honestly? Yes, his speeches are great. At the same time, though, did they really elevate him above the other 204 people who had been nominated when the deadline hit less than two weeks into his presidency?

The Republicans would be bitching and complaining no matter what acknowledgment the president receives from the world community for promoting world peace and the disarmament of existing nuclear arsenals. The only thing that gets Republican approval are other neo-con war mungers and kill freaks like George Bush and Dick Cheney.

Maybe the Republicans can talk Uganda into giving a War and Killer Prize; then they would have a good shot a winning it.

RetiredFirefighter says:

In a surprise development, the Nobel Committee has made the decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to President Obama and his teleprompter aka the Teleprompter of the President of the United States (TOTPOTUS). A spokesperson for the Nobel Committee said late on Friday that although President Obama was inspirational during his world wide apology tour, "we know who did the heavy lifting. " Contacted at his room at the White House, TOTPOTUS had the following to say about being the joint winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. " Come on man, that guy was apologizing to anyone who would listen to him and he made it look so easy. You got to give me credit because I was there every time he apologized enabling him to win this award!" The TOTPOTUS will accompany the President to Oslo to receive the award. POTUS would not have it any other way.

Jay B. says:

And I have done as much to bring peace to the world as our President.

Actually, I'm pretty sure those fancy-pants elitists in Norway would also think you're a just another Republican dick who've managed to fuck up the world to a point where a guy who has done as little as you believe Obama has done to look so much better than your preferred brand of lunatic insanity that they think he should be so awarded.

Since the Republicans stand for anti-peace, moderate steps toward international engagement come out way on the positive side.

Nice work.

By the way, it works like this in every thing you guys fucked up so utterly and completely. The economy? It sucks, but it's not as bad as it would have been! Gay rights? Not fast enough, but then, the administration isn't openly at war with gays! Health care? We may have the worst system in the developed world, but even small reforms would be a vast improvement on the Republican plan of nothing.

This is what happens when you govern like you "think", it's such a laughable attempt that anything that's slightly articulate or competent becomes something like manna from heaven.
