This is more common than you think. My cat got out a few years back while it was raining and took cover in my engine. She then rode with me to Wendy's where she got out and lived for two months. Last year, I had to help my neighbor pull a kitten out of her engine. I think that cats are attracted to the residual warmth in a car engine.

It's actually extremely common, especially when the warmer months meld into the fall/winter months quickly. I live in the Bronx and have seen this at least a dozen times. One of my kitties was a rescue-took refuge up in the right spring near my still-warm tailpipe; thankfully, a neighbor saw him!.

Even though my car is now generally garaged, I ALWAYS bang on the top of my hood several times and see if anything makes a noise, especially in the cooler and cold months, and even in the summer since they seek shelter from the sun. People look at me when I pop the hood for just a minute then close it without doing anything.

Now maybe they understand why.
