Google and Twitter Slow To Take Down Slanderous Impersonation of a Scientology Critic

Last week, Mark Bunker reminded us that over the summer, some scumbag had hijacked his identity and in his name was spewing anti-Islamic hate over a Twitter account and a Blogger website.

We were shocked to hear that the identity theft was still going on. Back when he'd first told us about it in July, we figured it would only take a few e-mails from Bunker to Twitter and Blogger (which is owned by Google) to take down the offending accounts.

But no. Months later, some coward was still operating both accounts, trying to make it look like Bunker was an anti-Islamic hatemonger. Bunker's attempts to get Twitter and Blogger's attention had gone nowhere.

We've known and written about Mark Bunker for years and years. Early in 2008, the anti-Scientology Anonymous movement dubbed Bunker "Wise Beard Man" when he posted a video counseling the reckless channers to stop punking Scientology and adopt classic non-violent protest to help publicize Scientology's unethical ways.

Bunker's words had a surprisingly strong (if temporary) effect, and he continues to be the model of a calm, ethical critic of L. Ron Hubbard's wacky cabal.

But someone doesn't see it that way. In July, a Twitter account (@MarkBunker) and website (markbunker.blogspot.com) both showed up, and each began spewing hate against Islam.

Clearly, someone who doesn't like Mark Bunker decided to smear him with the amateurish, hate-filled accounts.

Bunker immediately notified both Blogger and Twitter that he was being impersonated. From Twitter, he received a couple of automated responses telling him that the matter was being looked into. From Blogger, he heard nothing -- even though he'd carefully followed Blogger's own detailed instructions about how to report such an incident, which included sending in an image of his drivers license to prove that he was the real Mark Bunker.

Months later, the anti-Islamic hate was still showing up under Bunker's name.

On Thursday afternoon, we sent e-mails to the public relations departments of both Google -- which owns Blogger -- and Twitter.

The next morning, Google called.

The offending website had been taken down overnight.

"We took it down because it violated our terms of use," said Google spokeswoman Victoria Katsarou. "Blogger believes in freedom of speech, but we don't allow material that promotes hatred," she said.

Katsarou explained that Blogger/Google has a flagging system that allows users to report inappropriate material. A Google team then reviews those flags and closes accounts when it's appropriate. "This system of community flagging works surprisingly well," Katsarou added.

That's all well and good (if a bit Orwellian), but this wasn't simply a case of hate speech. This was a case of impersonation.

Katsarou said that the site was taken down for its content, not for its impersonation of Bunker because, according to Google's records, Bunker never submitted the proper forms.

Bunker sent us records to indicate he did submit the proper forms, and in a timely fashion, but all's well that ends well, we suppose.

Google can claim that its flagging system worked, but we wonder if the Voice's e-mail on Thursday night didn't, um, speed things up a bit.

Twitter, on the other hand, hasn't so much as acknowledged the Voice's inquiry, let alone respond with a call.

On Friday, however, it also took action by suspending the fake @MarkBunker account. There was no explanation to us, but a brief e-mail to Bunker, acknowledging that his complaints had resulted in action.

Bunker responded by asking if Twitter would help him figure out who had impersonated him, but Twitter wrote him back that it would be impossible.

Google told us the same thing. "For privacy reasons, I don't think that's possible," Katsarou told us when we asked if Google would give us information about who had hijacked Bunker's identity and used it spew hate speech.

Anonymous geeks think they've ID'd the culprit as a second-generation Scientologist in New Mexico. But until we see more evidence, we'll remain skeptical. (Bunker has his own doubts, as well.)

Despite several months of impersonation, Bunker says his good reputation as a Hubbard critic is still intact. "He just wanted to make it look like I hated all religions, and that I was an extremist with a lot of hate," Bunker says. Instead, many people immediately pointed out to Bunker that he was being impersonated -- people who know him and realized that he'd never be behind such a hate-filled enterprise. "There were a few people caught by surprise by the tweets," he admits. But overall, the attempt to smear him was a total bust.

Bunker is mostly surprised that Twitter responded so slowly when they've been trying to get publicity recently for their supposed beefing up of policing impersonators. When it came to an actual case, however, the company was slow to react.

UPDATE: We noticed this morning that Bunker's main site, Xenu TV (xenutv.com) is also down. Another case of sabotage?

No, Bunker assures us. His provider went out of town, and assured Wise Beard Man that his servers would be fine. But if anything did go wrong, there would be no one to do anything about it.

Sure enough, as soon as the guy left, the server went on the blink.

In the meantime, you can keep up on Bunker's latest thoughts at his (real) Twitter account (@XENUTV).

Most Anonymous members are atheist. I've read 4chan site before and they talk about American Muslims as well. As a New Yorker and a American who practices Islamic faith, I honestly have no sympathy for the removal of Mark Bunker or any other person who try's to ban Islamic religion or any other religion.

This is an American right to be able to practice my religion without someone protesting against it. My American FREEDOM!

Thanks Bahija for sending me this. I will share it with my friends to spread the word about how this hate organization called Anonymous should be band. I found this website by the organization which reference people of Islamic faith as sand niggers - http://iran.whyweprotest.net/off-topic/1531-sas-fyad-behind-goatse-spam-attack-2.html

It is so sad to see these types of websites to even be allowed.

How can we be sure that this markbunker.blogspot.com was not sending these anti-Islamic faith messages?

I am not familiar with the religion of Scientology, I have only seen the building in New York City, but I am familiar with the masked Anonymous group who stand out side of the building yelling and screaming and taunting people. I usually ignore it but this has gone way to far.

you folks didn't even read the article, did you?

Mark Bunker was *Impersonated*. *Someone Else* wanted to make him look bad. *Someone Else*, not Mark Bunker, was spewing hate all over the internet about Islam.

The questions that Muslims should be asking themselves are:

"Who would impersonate Mark Bunker to say hateful things about Islam? Who are Mark Bunker's enemies?"

Well, Mark Bunker, as the article notes, is a critic of Scientology.

This is very and truly sad. Why are people so hate full that they would start a hate site against people of any religion. So sinister.

Bahija Abd-el-Nasser did you even read the article? Because your comment shows you are clueless about what the article actually was written about.
And there is nothing that says a religion can't be protested, that would go against freedom of speech.
From your comment about religion, it appears you have no idea about the constitution. Try reading it sometime, and for some help it is the 1st Amendment.

Prior to founding Scientology, Hubbard gave a lecture entitled "What's Wrong with This Universe: A Working Package for the Auditor" on December 9, 1952. In it, Hubbard describes some of the "between lives" implants that supposedly occur to us after we die and before we reincarnate. One of these implants, called "The Emanator", is supposedly the origin of Islam. Hubbard claims that The Emanator was the source of the "Mohammedan Lodestone". Hubbard further describes the Prophet Muhammad as a small town booster that mocked up [made up] Islam only because business wasn't good in his hometown. [7]

Further, Muslims respect and love Jesus. See Quran, 3:45, 4:171, 19:16-33, 21:91. Islam teaches that Jesus was a true and genuine messenger of God. See Quran, 61:14. The Quran rebukes those who reject Jesus. See Quran, 2:87, 4:156-158. Muslims believe in the miracles that Jesus performed by God's leave. See Quran, 5:110.

The Quran states:

"Say "We believe in God, and the revelation given to us, and the revelation given to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no distinction between one and another of them, and to Him we are submitters." [9] [10]

In contrast, the Church of Scientology teaches in its secret Class 8 Auditor's [ministerial] class that, like Islam, Christianity is the result of an evil memory "implant" designed to control people. [8] Hubbard goes on to state that there was no Jesus, and that Christianity is based on watching the behavior of madmen. In Class 8, Lecture 10, Hubbard states that the leaders of the Christian Church used brainwashing, invented Christ, and siezed power.

Scientology's admits that its promise that there is no "necessity to leave your current . . . mosque." is a lie. In its application for tax exempt status, the Church of Scientology told the IRS:

"Footnote 6: Although there is no policy or Scriptural mandate expressly requiring Scientologists to renounce other religious beliefs or membership in other churches, as a practical matter Scientologists are expected to and do become fully devoted to Scientology to the exclusion of other faiths. As Scientologists, they are required to look only to Scientology Scriptures for the answers to the fundamental questions of their existence and to seek enlightenment only from Scientology." [11]

The following quote are from L. Ron Hubbard, 20th Advanced Clinical Course, "Case Analysis-Rock Hunting," lecture of 4 August 1958

"He's [the Arab] been going crazy steadily and gradually ever since he lost the early very fertile basins of the Middle East. He's been going crazy ever since he failed to learn wheat farming and brought about the erosion of all the fertile areas of the Middle East."

"This race has been going for a very, very long time and has been eating death for a very long time and it is death."

"The Arab is to a point where he won't even follow a decent leader. He's got to have a man of blood, a man of cruelty, exaggeration, and bigotry. Then he'll follow him."

"...the Arab is trying to be pleased with death and murder and mayhem and disease and poverty and political unrest."

Optimisticate says:

I, for one, think Google reacted after getting an inquiry from the media. There are things like this happening all over blogger.com, and google does nothing about it. It shouldn't take bad PR to get someone impersonating you removed from a website, particularly when that person takes their own hate and calls it yours.

Twitter, well, they're still living up to their name. They're simply twits.

As for the commenters here, it seems that the first few have primary objectives on their own agenda and they don't pertain to the article or subject matter. The comments sound and look suspiciously familiar though. Silly scientologists, your own religion is anti-muslim. Remember your brochure with Mohammend standing below a scientology salesman?

And we've seen from those fake blogs how OSA Scilons like to impersonate others to accomplish their sinister goals.

So for Bahija Abd-el-Nasser, Maisara and Kamil Disai or whoever you really are, go run back to David Miscavige and tell him how your plan failed. Maybe he'll beat you only once if your lucky. Losers.

Markbunker.blogspot.com WAS posting them. Do you mean how can we be sure it wasn't Mark Bunker himself posting those messages? I guess you think it makes sense that someone would post hate-filled messages and then protest that he didn't post them? Maybe in your world that kind of thing seems plausible.

Bahija and Maisara are not Muslims, they are scientologists pretending to be Muslims. They write like scientologists. They all sound like the same old broken record. I like how they linked to a site Anonymous set up to help the people of Iran throw off their dictators, men who will kill and torture anyone who doesn't follow a certain VERSION of Islam. Kinda blows away their sentiment that Anonymous hates Muslims if Anonymous was trying to help them gain freedom to live and worship as they choose.

It is funny that Google takes so long to help Mark Bunker out, but bent over sideways and backwards to help out scientology multiple times. First banning anonymous protests sites from using Adsense because it "hurts one of their high paying customers". Second banning multiple youtube videos after false DMCA complaints. Yet they don't seem to have trouble looking the other way when scientologists set up hate blogs full of libelous statements about people.

Nice double standard Google, or maybe it's just all the money scientology is paying you for ads that is making you do their dirty work on demand.

That or a Scientologist impersonator just assumes Arabs all have the same names and no one knows how to use Google. And BTW, I have protested with Anonymous and I am very religious.

It would seem, on first glance, that the first comments came from people who didn't bother reading the article....but on closer examination of both content and pen-names, one realizes that it is Scientologists posting those stmts, intended to confuse the public reading the article. They're clever, sneaky little buggars, aren't they? They know that 30% of the readers (their target audience) are too stupid to think for themselves and see the flawed reasoning. If, by their comments, they were able to get even a few people to think Mark is anti-Muslum, then they've accomplished something, haven't they?

Investigate The Cult says:

Scientology management will go to any lengths to silence dissenting voices, including frivolous lawsuits, stalking, and psychological warfare. They have previously infiltrated government offices in the United States, Canada, and France to disrupt court cases and destroy evidence.

Keep this in mind the next time you see the following scientology front groups, which often deny affiliation with the cult:

- Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI)
- Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR)
- Volunteer "Ministers"
- Association for Better Living and Education (ABLE)
- The Way to Happiness (TWTH) Foundation
- Narconon and Criminon

Scientology needs many faces to support its money laundering, deceptive recruitment practices, and to evade government investigation.

Bill Livingston says:

I am a Scientologist. Why? Because it works. From the first course on Communication that I took, everything in Scientology has worked. True, it doesn't work for everyone, and people can get refunds if it doesn't work for them. Factually, people who go in to test Scientology or to disprove it's principals will not get much from it. But people who are really looking for answers will find that the answers are inside themselves and Scientology can help them discover those answers. Hubbard said that what is true for you is what you have observed for yourself. In other words, in Scientology, we don't seek to achieve a higher state by having faith. Rather we achieve a higher state by finding and removing mental and spirtual barriers. Either it works or it doesn't.

Also, in Scientology, we are seeking to elevate ourselves to a higher state right here on Earth. In other words, we are trying to make a heaven on Earth. Obviously, life on Earth is a far cry from heaven at this point, but if people of good will band together, we can reduce crime, cut down on drug addiction and reduce violence and war. There are many Scientologists working every day to achieve those exact goals. Obviously, people don't have to be Scientologists to help make life better on this planet. There are lots of good people working to improve things.

So how is Scientology a religion? It is a religion in the sense of eastern religions such as Buddhism or Hinduism. I am far from an expert on either of those, but through Scientology, I discovered for myself that I am a spiritual being. This doesn't require faith on my part. I have remembered and handled traumas from past existences that were affecting my life now. These were things that I had forgotten. In other words, I had amnesia, and still do to a lesser extent, since there are things that I still don't remember.

In Scientology, the goal is to handle our amnesia as spiritual beings and regain our native abilities. What are the native abilities of a spiritual being? I don't know all them, but I intend to find out.

Maybe the real mystery is where did spiritual beings come from? How did this universe start? There are some people who think that it was all an accident that started with a big bang. Well what caused this big bang. What existed before it. Maybe we will find the answers in our own minds. Scientology is quite an adventure!

Bill Livingstone, please try to focus and stay on topic. Your little infomercial has nothing to do with the topic, and suggests you didn't even read it.

Impersonation of a respected Scientology critic. Hate speech about Islam. Google and Twitter's failure to respond.

Savvy?

It's entirely likely that the idiot who posted such vile things about Islam in Mark Bunker's name was hoping some radical would be offended enough to come after him and punish him for the words attributed to him.

Is this how Scientology gives you tools to improve your life, spreading hate speech and impersonating others. Not real impressive, bub. Kind of distasteful, actually. Every time one of your members does this, the reputation of Scientology the organization drops a notch in the public eye.

No matter. Soon there will be no Scientology organization, as it will be bled to death financially by the hundreds of lawsuits coming its way.

Maybe then you'll actually read what's going on instead of simply posting your stupid testimonials.

This doesn't amaze me whatsoever. Welcome to Google's new world order. Where individuals have no power without friends in the press or enough money to keep an attorney on staff. Now if MB was dishonest, he could have claimed a copywrite violation and Google would have acted immediatley because it's own money is at stake in that event. Thus, the dishonest people of the world are the "chosen" people in Google's new world order. Google doesn't care about the implications of its policy, it just wants your money. Think Evil. Encourage people to act dishonestly.

Just look at what happens to COS staff members on their alleged path to enlightenment-- they get the shit beat out of them by their bosses. It's all reported in the St. Petersburg Times articles available online "the truth rundown".

So how has scientology "worked" for all the COS staff members getting paid $50 a week only to get rewarded by getting barbarically beaten down?

Also, if it works, then why are there absolutely no studies by real doctors that support that notion? After 50 years the COS does not have one "clear" with super human powers, as allged by LRH, and you say it works? It works at taking your money and making you a joke of a human who allows themselves to get the shit beat out of them for no purpose.

Anonsoldier says:

Bill Livingstone's advertisement reeks with falsehoods, half-truths, and outright lies. I hear empty promises that gloss over a corrupt interior, and every word rings false when compared to the MANY horror stories from the over SEVEN HUNDRED former members who've told THEIR side of the story.

Let us explore them:
"Why? Because it works"
So does a placebo. There's no scientific evidence in any way shape or form that "successes" are attributable to Scientology proper, the crude psychiatric methods rehashed as 'auditing' used by the cult, or that people WANT it to work so bad that they convince themselves that it worked.
There is no science in Scientology.

"In other words, in Scientology, we don't seek to achieve a higher state by having faith."
Faith is believing in something without proof. You have NO proof of anything Hubbard has ever said, ergo you're living purely off faith.

"Either it works or it doesn't."
So does a light switch, and that doesn't cost thousands of dollars. The Church of Scientology requires your money if you want to progress, doesn't refund it despite your claims, and if you have to repeat a course because the Chairman of the Board David Miscavige changed the tech charges you for it all over again.

"There are many Scientologists working every day to achieve those exact goals. "
Your "greatest good" is the growth of the Church of Scientology, and is the only claim the SeaOrg or Volunteer Ministers can ever make about helping people. Every single one of your outreach efforts or front groups is geared towards increasing membership, not helping people.

Then don't pretend that Scientology is anything like them. You're making a comparison and then claiming you know almost nothing about what you're comparing to.

Scientology is more like a pyramid scheme, where you have to get more people to come in so you can audit them to make money off them to pay for your own auditing. They're selling you a bridge alright...a bridge to nowhere.

"I have remembered and handled traumas from past existences that were affecting my life now."
And how do your past lives compare to what OTHERS remember from their past lives? Numerous ex-members discovered that their "past lives" were the exact same as other ex-members. Also, the entire auditing process is DIRECTLY copied from a psychiatric method of treatment known as "regression therapy". IDENTICAL, but with a LIE DETECTOR added in. Funny how sec checks are more like interrogations than counseling, isn't it?

"What are the native abilities of a spiritual being? I don't know all them, "
Maybe you should list the ones you DO know, for the benefit of the viewing public so they can understand upfront what the beliefs of Scientology are.

"Maybe the real mystery is where did spiritual beings come from?"
It's called OT III, tells the story of Xenu, and has been the subject of numerous lawsuits by the Church of Scientology over copyright infringement while they simultaneously deny the document and story exist. Nevermind that versions in Hubbard's own handwriting are freely and easily found on the Internet.

Time to apply that doubt formula, Bill. Just be careful, an OT VIII in the Netherlands meticulously applied the doubt formula and realized that the entirety of Scientology is a crock and a lie.

The perp is "Tom Newton," aka Jake/Jacob Vigil of New Mexico. It's no secret, and he's made three or four of these impersonation blogs. On one, he posted child pornography in the name of a critic. Google was very slow to remove the site, despite the highly offensive material. (Email for details if you wish)

To Bahija: you've clearly missed the point, which was that the blog was NOT Mark Bunker's. That said, anyone who wishes has the right to protest your religion or any other belief, and that's their (inviolable) right as an American.

Yea, I also came to the conclusion that Bahija Abd-el-Nasser was a Scientology plant. His post was internally inconsistent and nonsensical, and soundbite in nature. And who uses their alleged full name online? Some OSA goon pretending to be a Muslim, thinking "If I use a full Muslim name, people are sure to really think I'm Muslim." Ex scientology member Tory Christman discusses her work for Scientology OSA, when she held numerous internet accounts and spammed internet forums with junk like that, on her youtube videos, user: Torymago44, i believe.

Others have touched on the propaganda nature of the first few comments, but the notion that "most Anonymous members are atheist", as claimed in the first comment, is almost as laughable as Scientology's belief that we evolved from clams (as Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up; see his book History of Man).

Anonymous comes from all walks of life, and are far more than just the posters on 4chan.

In short: FLUNK, Scientology shills

Un says:

The person who made the blog does not work for Scientology, and is most likely not even a Scientologist himself. He is Jacob Vigil, who writes "Anonymous-is-a-hategroup" blogspot under the alias "Tom Newton", previously used by internet troll Alan Connor. Jacob's previous troll handle is "Jakob K. Reist", and he used to troll Catholic forums.

Given this evidence, his purpose is most likely not to defend Scientology, but rather to piss off people on the internet. However, he isn't very good at pretending to be someone else, as his blogspot ID always shines through, or he uses the same email address for sock accounts, and fails to hide his IP or change his website link in blog replies, etc.

Tony,

Great article re Mark and the losers who try to steal identities. I've had the same ever since I escaped out of Scientology. In fact, Tony was the first to officially report on what all occurred then and their dirty antics, and I'll always thank you for doing so.
My best to you :)

Tony,

Above was stated, Maybe the real mystery is where did spiritual beings come from? How did this universe start?"

Scientology (C of $) will tell you they have ALL the answers. Just ask yourself this:
Why, IF they had all the answers, truly, why in
the world would they have to waste one minute lying about their critics or X-members?
Also, never forget *their* answers cost big bucks,(thousands, often millions)--- every second of the way. Religion? Keep looking:
www.youtube.com/ToryMagoo44 (for more info
on the darker, more secret side of Scientology)

Love to all, especially Tony~

Victorian Christman or "Tory Magoo" is a well known anti-religious bigot who spreads lies about Scientology

Don't expect "Tony" her little friend, to set the record straight on her activities, just like the fact anonymous is linked to child pornography, although every one of them know it.

Thank you "John Walker" for again proving that what critics say about $cientology is true.

Her "activities"? Still trying (and failing) to smear Tory after all these years; classic $cientology. I don't know a lot of "religions" that do that John.

You are such a pack of bumbling idiots. Still resorting to the same old tactics that have done NOTHING but create more critics. Smart.

You are the Barney Fife of destructive cults.

Shawn's friend says:

Shame on you, John Walker! What you forgot to add is that the hateful site religiousfreedomwatch.org is run by the church of scientology. Anybody speaking out and actually having results (getting people out of the cult), gets a special web page with nonsense posted about them.
SHAME ON YOU!

Imran Anwar says:

Tony, your well written article shows a serious problem online and one that the Bloggers and Twitters of the world are ignoring.

In addition to fake IDs being set up, there is another common way, especially on Twitter, to slander someone. Any ID can "retweet" another person's messages as we know. So, a slanderer can post a false RT, simply typing

RT @yourname I hate blah blah....

and as others retweet this, soon enough there will be plenty of people believing your wrote the hateful comment that was simply retweeted. There is no easy way on Twitter's pages to report or flag messages for such malice that I could find.

"Also, in Scientology, we are seeking to elevate ourselves to a higher state right here on Earth. In other words, we are trying to make a heaven on Earth."

Check out lifelong Scientologist Rex Fowler, OT VII/VIII, who murdered an innocent family man in Colorado over the holidays. This is proof for you Bill Livingston that Scientology doesn't do what it claims. Better to get out before you reach the level of Mr Fowler and destroy everyone around you.

Deep down you know something is very wrong with you and it's not the BTs, it's the lies of Scientology.
