Musto Jokes About Incest at Miss LEZ Pageant, Bombs

Roughly 200 queer women (and only a handful of men, gay or otherwise) gathered at Brooklyn's Knitting Factory last night for Miss LEZ, the ninth annual assault on the beauty pageant industry by contestants from a variety of sexualities and gender presentations. Murray Hill hosted the raucous event, which asked the five contestants -- representing plus-size vintage shop Re/Dress NYC, parties That's My Jam and Choice Cunts, theater troupe Butch Mamas, and This is Burlesque -- to compete in the categories of Platform, Swimsuit, Q&A, Talent, and Evening Gown.

Miss Butch Mamas, playwright KS Stevens, took the top prize of the evening, which included a Hitachi Magic Wand and $100. Her platform was the most serious of the evening -- butch representation, as opposed to, say, Miss Re/Dress's killer "No bacon left behind." But Stevens continually delivered, taking on not only butch visibility but race and gender in her talent, a lipsynch of "Kung Fu Fighting."

Miss Choice Cunts, Sarah Jenny, gave the audience plenty of ideas with her BDSM-inspired talent of tying up and spanking two assistants. She was awarded Miss Congeniality, though Miss That's My Jam, Becca Blackwell, was more deserved of the prize. In the Q&A portion of the evening, our own Michael Musto asked Blackwell if, like Mackenzie Phillips, she'd ever had consensual incest with a loved one, and if so, who had made the first move.

Boos, "Fuck you"s, and claims of white male privilege were voiced in the room, but Blackwell's Mad Hatter conceded that she, too, was daddy's little girl. That's grace under fire. Musto said that wasn't the answer he was expecting, but we're not sure what he was going for.

Thank you for this post!
This is what I sent to Musto personally.

Here are some statistics I thought you might interested in:

*A review of victim reports in 3 states in the US in 1992 revealed that 46% of rape victims under age 12 had a family relationship with the perpetrator, and 20% were raped by their fathers. (Bureau of Justice Statistics)
*A random survey of 2,627 women and men conducted by the Los Angeles Times found that 27% of the women and 16% of the men had been incestuously abused as children (By Silence Betrayed, John Crewsdon, Little Brown, 1988).

*1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape).1

*93% of juvenile sexual assault victims know their attacker.6

* 34.2% of attackers were family members.
* 58.7% were acquaintances.
* Only 7% of the perpetrators were strangers to the victim.
College age women are 4 times more likely to be sexually assaulted.

80% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 30.

Maybe you should consider some these facts next time you ask a question, especially at a event with an audience of predominantly young women.

Hey 2nd anonymous: Not everything is a fucking joke! Get a clue. Some of these people would say or write about anything to keep their jobs or themselves in the media. perez hilton also comes to mind for his "wise choice" to go with faggot instead of the "n" word. Well, he sure got what he deserved, didn't he? A good ole' beat-down!

That line is classic Musto. If you don't know what his humor is like, then don't book him for your event. And Real, thank the goddess that everything IS a fucking joke. Springtime for Hitler, anyone?

Chris M. says:

Michael, Michael, Michael,

You should have known better! Just because the audience was Lesbian doesn't mean they will like you?! We gay men can laugh at that stuff...not necessarily so for the Saffo sisters.

This also sheds some light for me on why gay men and women don't necessarily mingle in NYC.

Women (gay or straight) at gay male events are often embraced, or on the other end of the spectrum, ignored, but never to the point of total distaste for their presence (one exception: Batchelorette party girls. The reason is obvious.)

Gay men at the Wymyn, Boi,LEZ,etc. events are not so well received. At best you will be ignored; at worst you'll be eyed with disgust. (Now how fun is that!)

With that said, I look forward to your next hosting gig with the boys.....

Offended says:

The question was a joke about consensual incest. That is not the same thing as rape. I think it is insensitive of you to equate the two.
