Rightbloggers Defend America Against Dangerous Nobel Peace Prize

This week Time magazine had an interesting feature on the Obama Administration's alleged realization that it needed to strike back at "what the White House believes to be misleading or simply false claims..." You have to wonder what took them so long -- and whether such a counter-attack could possibly do any good.

As we've shown here ceaselessly, the rightblogger wing of the anti-Obama offensive has been working since the Inauguration to publicize not only the President's failures, but also his successes as failures. Indeed, they even promote irrelevancies and their own fantasies as Obama failures. Answering this kind of thing with fact-checking and criticism seems beside the point, like arguing with a tape-recording of a Tourette Syndrome episode.

What sort of answer, for example, could be offered to the charge that winning the Nobel Peace Prize is a bad thing? Outside the context of the rightbloggers' war against Obama, the charge makes no sense; within that context, it makes no difference. To answer it would be like arguing that kittens are nice, or that fresh fruit is healthy.

All one can reasonably do is document the reaction and hope that, in some more enlightened age, our descendants can make something useful of it...

As we noted at the time of its announcement, rightbloggers were quick to declare the Prize a liability for the President. Daniel Pipes said that it would "harm Obama politically in the United States." Matzav said it was "the last thing Barack Obama needed at this moment in his presidency." "A weight around his neck?" asked Jewish Week. "Obama joins long line of Nobel Peace Prize losers," said RedState.

"The higher the honor based on future performance, the deeper the hole if he doesn't meet expectations," said On My Watch. "Now a cloud of doubt hangs over the oval office." "Is Obama's European star finally falling to earth?" asked Pajamas Media's Soeren Kern.

Jesus. Imagine what they'd have said if he lost.

The Nobel IS dangerous. Mostly to Obama, who has now had the expectations for his performance raised even higher.

They'd have said, "First the Olympics, now this. What's next (hint: impeachment)? Bad luck comes in 3s." Of course, to them, the actual win was really a loss, so I suppose they can still say what I just wrote.

It would also be fun to imagine what rightbloggers would say had Bush II won during his administration: "Finally, at last. Guess the reward/honor means something after all." Or, as his approval numbers sank, "Nice vote of confidence to a guy who deserves it." Not hard to predict, and I love that in a conservative.

I just love watching them loose their shit. This has been one popcorn bag after another.
The fact for the right is that they have nothing interesting to say, and no policies at all, let alone policies that anyone believes in, so downing the man is all they have.
If Obama had cured cancer, they'd bitch about the damage to the pharmaceutical industry, and swear up and down that it was the end for him.

The rightblogger gaggle is typically lunatic, but I really thought Noonan's "who invented the internet? Oh wait, it was the Americans*" shtick was your own facetious satire of what she'd written. But, holy fucking shit, that's what she wrote. This is what the DT's must look like when typed out as words. Obama might as well ask "And who invented the stuff that made it possible to mine the uranium we used to blow Hiroshima to smithereens, huh? Oh wait... it was Alfred Nobel**." (Also, considering that Norway's per capita domestic product is double that of the United States, making it the wealthiest country in the world, with a trade imbalance very much on the positive side, unlike ours, it might not be such a good idea to savage the country as just a bunch of wicked and ignorant liberals.)

* This is, of course, a laughable statement. Al Gore notwithstanding, the Internet wasn't "invented" by any one group, and folks like Tim Berners-Lee would love to find out they're American now.

** Not a Norwegian, but still.

I am neither "right" nor "left" - eclectic works. I do think it is ludicrous to award *anyone* the Nobel based on their "potential" rather than actual accomplishments. And I would believe that no matter who they awarded the prize to.

Additionally, you joke about 'had Bush II won the award', but putting aside the fact that not even Bush Jr.'s fans (if there are any left) believe he deserved such notice, I think it is fairly safe to say that the Nobel committee has made it quite plain with their previous track record that they are not "right" and they are certainly not "eclectic" (no matter how much they might pretend to be).

Is it whining to note that in this case the emperor truly has no clothes? Or is the real whining coming from those complaining about those who are pointing out that the emperor has no clothes and how unkind it is of them to notice his state of undress?...

Yeah, is it silly to write nonsensical sentences that pose as serious intellectual queries, or when I am wearing clothes am I supposed to pretend everyone else is naked? I mean, this is so hard to comprehend, I don't know whether I am wearing clothes or if Obama is wearing clothes.

It's not whining, it's just bullshit, I hope that answers your very serious question, Grace.

nice gambit there, let me see if I can answer you in kind.

it's not whining to point out the 'state of undress' it's just stupid to scream at the top of your lungs that the emporer has no clothes when youre sneaking around in his bushes late at night peeping into his bathroom window.

if Obama had campaigned for the prize then you'd have legitimate gripe, but painting this as a debacle for the president is not just obviously cynical and petty, it's really fucking shallow.

SFAW says:

Grace -
I hope you'll forgive me for suggesting this - it's kind of a radical (or eclectic?) idea - but, you might consider reading the what the Nobel Committee wrote regarding why they awarded it to him.

While you're at it, you might also want to ask Desmond Tutu to give his back, since he hadn't really done anything yet when they awarded it to him.

As far as the Committee not being "right" or "eclectic": gee, I don't know, but it might have something to do with the right-wingers preferring (in general) to shoot first and ask questions later. When the "right" and "eclectic" start eschewing that idea/tactic, then the Nobels should start flowing to them like water, which I'm sure is what they really want.

I think you're selling Bush short, by the way. Like Henry Bemis, Bush (or Cheney) wanted peace. Of course, in Bush's case, books would be replaced by booze, but you get the idea.

As one of the quoted authors, "The Nobel Prize should serve as the rallying cry for patriots who recognize that it was awarded by our ideological enemies for service in behalf of their cause," I would like to: first, thank the author for quoting me; and two, point out that it is paradoxical that a person should win recognition for their potential, rather than their performance.

If you do not believe, as I do, that collectivism and socialism is destructive to society in that it discourages individualism, one need only consider the socialist unions -- a microcosm of Marxism -- complete with the ruling elite, the thuggish enforcers and the reward of seniority and position over merit and achievement. Multiply the union experience and you have a decaying, declining society that will end in special interest corruption.

Perhaps Obama really got the prize for community organizing and his support of unions?

Anyway, thanks to the author for the quote.

Scott: thanks for the compliment, I strive to be "first class." AIG executives are not public officials, their actions do not affect us all and unless they committed an illegal act, they simply "gamed" the system to their advantage.

peorgie tirebiter: The Medal of Honor is awarded, the Nobel Peace Prize, unlike the other Nobel Prizes is won -- sort of like a lottery among the names submitted by politicians. The fact that Rush Limbaugh and radio personality Bill Handel, among others, have been nominated for the prize points to the criteria for submissions. The fact that one of Obama's minions applied for the prize within eleven days after he assumed office is just another part of the craziness. By the way, do you think you can explain why it is called a "prize" and not an "honor?"

As for efforts -- please point out to me what efforts. He did not conceive of any of the initiatives that he is pushing, many came from Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. He did not write the legislation, that was subcontracted out to Congressional staffers and think tanks. What he did do is denigrate America in various overseas venues. Hardly a President that honors America and its great achievements.

Heh.

It figures that the bunch who followed George W. Bush to the brink - and beyond - as he fucked up our standing in the world, our economy, our military, our justice system, our educational system, etc etc etc, are now complaining that their guy so lowered the bar that simply not being George W. Bush now qualifies an American president for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Hell, as far as I'm concerned, it's more than sufficient reason for awarding someone the prize. That having been said, my opinion on it matters about as much as the rightwing frothers' opinion on it - which is to say, not at all. It's not an elected body, bitches. It's not a member of NATO or the UN or the WTO or the G8 (now G20). It's a fricken' prize committee and it's their call as to who most deserves the prize in any given year. And they really don't give two shits about how you feel about it.

I suspect what ya'll are really upset about is that, exactly, as a prize committee doesn't offer an opportunity for invasion or a bombing target for the sufferers of extreme rightwing butthurt.

Ben says:

What's absurd is not that he was rewarded it, as I doubt any of us have a good frame of reference for what qualifies as absurd in Nobel Peace Prize awarding.

The absurdity is found in the claim that somehow winning the Nobel Peace Prize reflects poorly on Obama, who was probably as surprised as anyone else. At its worst, it's bizarre. Well that would be the worst... save for the self-fulfilling prophecy of the shrill right-wing scaremongers.

OneCitizenBabbling writes: The Medal of Honor is awarded, the Nobel Peace Prize, unlike the other Nobel Prizes is won -- sort of like a lottery among the names submitted by politicians.

No, that's not true, on three counts.

First, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Nobel Committee, not a random drawing of all nominations.

Second, all Nobel prizes are awarded in the same fashion. None are a Publishers' Clearinghouse Drawing as you seem to believe.

Third, names are not submitted solely by politicians. You may read about who is invited to sublit nominations by reading this.

That's three.

Chris Vosburg says:

OneCitizenBabbling continues: The fact that Rush Limbaugh and radio personality Bill Handel, among others, have been nominated for the prize points to the criteria for submissions.

Again, not true, on two counts.

Firat, Names of nominees are not revealed for fifty years after the nom. So, you cannot know whether either of the two named above were or were not nominated.

Second, unsolicited nominations are invalid and ignored (for obvious reasons; it's a big planet, dumbass).

So, that's five lies.

So, that's your sixth lie.

CitizenDullard wraps with a flourish: What he did do is denigrate America in various overseas venues. Hardly a President that honors America and its great achievements.

"Overseas venues" do not agree. The United States is currently the most admired nation in the world, according to a poll of global denizens.

" 'What's really remarkable is that in all my years studying national reputation, I have never seen any country experience such a dramatic change in its standing as we see for the United States for 2009,' said Simon Anholt, the founder of NBI, which measured the global image of 50 countries each year."

And of course, the Nobel Peace Prize itself is an award to America itself for finally coming to its senses after eight years of the cowboy diplomacy of an emotional child and the nursery school of retarded children comprising his "brain trust".

Time has already told, ya dope. You have only to look up from your deeply disappointing and unsatisfactory navel-gazing and see.

Do not attribute to malice that which can be attributed to incompetence. The tragedy of wingnuttery is that not only is it wrong, it is convinced it is right, based on nothing more than blind faith that what is assumed to be true is true, all facts to the contrary notwithstanding. You can't expect people who believe independent research and thinking for themselves is a waste of time to even pretend to care about facts. A fact is whatever fits the victimization narrative of the day. The corollary to that study a few years ago that found that people who are incompetent lack the skill to discern what is competent and what is not. The same goes for stupid people. Clueless people are clueless because, durrr, they have no clue.

So it may be inaccurate to call them liars. It's probably more accurate to call them "deranged fucking asshole morons."

SFAW says:

AIG executives are not public officials, their actions do not affect us all and unless they committed an illegal act, they simply "gamed" the system to their advantage.

Right, 'cause the bailout money that they got came from the Magical Money Printing Machine, and therefore no government $$$ was needed. And their collapse certainly had no effect on anything to do with the economy.

Of course, if they had been po' brown folk, then their "gaming" the system would have been a capital crime, right?

The fact that Rush Limbaugh and radio personality Bill Handel, among others, have been nominated for the prize points to the criteria for submissions.

Ah yes, the old canard from that drug addict about how he's going to nominate himself, or have one of his stooges (or perhaps one of his little boyfriends from the Dominican?) do it for him. Except that the Committee doesn't work that way, as was stated numerous times back when OxyContinBoy first brought it up. And even if he found a patsy to do it - said patsy needing to have certain standing with the Committee - he'd never make it onto the short list. If Osama bin Laden - who apparently is one of Rush's soulmates - somehow convinced Assad or similar to nominate him for the prize, his name would make it to Norway, but never get anywhere.

He did not write the legislation, that was subcontracted out to Congressional staffers and think tanks.

Like the other Bush idolators, you were fainting with delight when the "CEO Preznit" took office. Of course, as with every company he headed, he drove the country into the ground. So when a real CEO-type comes along, your heads explode - because he knows what to delegate. Oh, right, you want him to write all the legislation and all the amendments.

And time will tell how much he will be able to undo all the damage that Bush did to the United States.

Fixed.

For someone who's adopted such an air of superiority in your comments, you're pretty dim. You need to get your information from someplace other than Rushbo - as Dean Wormer might say: "Lazy and stupid is no way to go through life".

OneCitizenSpeaking says:

I respect former President Bush for the safety he provided to America on his watch; not the cronyism, corruption and incompetence that was rampant in his Administration.

Considering the amount of damage that President Obama has wreaked on America, one needs to first note that he has continued, enhanced and/or extended most of the Bush policies. His handling of finance, the War in Afghanistan, global warming and cap-and-trade marks him as incredibly naive and compliant to an international community that is jealously laughing at America as they plan to plunder our Treasury.

I am afraid that our country is being led by someone who combines the worst common characteristics of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton into one "celebrity-like" telegenic package. If a man is known by his associations, we are in deep trouble.

I know who legitimately nominated both Rush and Bill Handel. It was publicly announced. As one who has known a number of scientific Nobel Prize recipients, I find it hard to equate their life-long achievements with the political puff piece given to people like Jimmy Carter, Yasser Araft, Al Gore and others. The nomination period for the prize closed at the end of February, eleven days after Obama took office on January 20th. Up until that time, he had no noteworthy accomplishments other than well-written speeches delivered with the omni-present TelePrompTer. He had little or no experience in the Senate and nothing other than far-left political ill-will was involved with the prize. It appears, at least to me, that the Committee was trying to bolster Obama's prestige and influence his future actions.

Whatever you might think about Rush Limbaugh, it remains that he single-handedly revitalized AM talk radio through his personal communication skills. Whether or not he believes what he says, and I believe he does, or it's all a big goof, the man has capitalized on his talents by providing a product which resonates with a large segment of the public.

As for AIG, Citibank and others, there was a confluence of corporate greed, the failure of the regulatory agencies who were in bed with those they regulated and those accountants and lawyers which aided and abeted egregious corporate behavior. Why these people are not prosecuted for breaching their fiduciary duties remains a mystery. Likewise I have little or no respect for those on the other side, the community organizers at ACORN who also reveived taxpayer funds.

I am always surprised by the vitriol and name-calling that occurs in these forums, perhaps more indicative of the nature of those calling others names.

There are two maxims that you need to take to heart: one, politicians are inherently problematical; and two, knowledge is responsibility. For some of you, I am reminded about a third: weak argument, jump up and down while shouting like hell.

Jennifer writes: Do not attribute to malice that which can be attributed to incompetence.

I might have agreed with you in the early nineties, Jennifer, but not any more.
In any court of law, one can receive the following advice from any lawyer or judge: If you give testimony that you do not know to be true, then you are testifying falsely, and that is subversion of the cause of justice. It is also injurious to the truth, and there's your victim, and your malice aforethought. With full knowledge that what he said was not the truth-- he didn't give a damn whether is was-- he said it anyway, and I've grown tired of cutting slack to those so blithely indifferent to the simple respect the truth deserves, and reasoned public debate depends upon.

You may be tempted to point out that, well, this is not a courtroom, and I can only say in reply that the law embodies the principles we most aspire to as a species, so the rareified air of a courtroom should not be the only place in which these principles should be adhered to-- in fact, far from it.

So, no, no more indulgence for those hoping to wave the ignorance defense, at least not from me. There's simply too much at stake, and we haven't got the time for any more of this bullshit.

Mr. Ziffel says:

I respect former President Bush for the safety he provided to America on his watch;

Well, there was that time a little over eight years ago when those crazy terrorists crashed airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but other than that, cool, safety provided.

Oh, I forgot the anthrax letters. But other than that, the safety was awesome, absolutely. Unless, of course, you drowned in New Orleans. Otherwise, rest assured, safety was provided! Hells yeah, we can dance if we want to!

Mr. Ziffel: You are clueless to the nature and frequency of the threats arrayed against American cities. It was Jimmy Carter that was responsible for the rise of IslamoFascism. It was Bill Clinton who failed to defend the America and let Osama bin Laden off the hook. Sorry, I remain grateful to President Bush for protecting me.

The failure of Katrina was the failure of people, individually and collectively who failed to do their duty.

Historically, allowing a community to build a city below city and not maintaining their dike infrastructure and pumping mechanisms.

Then there was the local government which failed to take action and evacuate the city using school buses which were left idle.

Then there was the local government which disarmed law-abiding citizens leaving them prey to roving bands of criminals and vandals.

Then there was the local government which delayed and held supplies which should have been distributed.

Then there was the local government which delayed calling for help.

And then there were the police who deserted their posts like cowards. (Over 50%)

So how is the President of the United States able to protect us from a natural disaster? Or take action when the local authorities fail to call for assistance in a timely manner.

Yes, there were many failures -- but most were not attributable to the President. My experience with FEMA during the Northridge Earthquake was outstanding.

To Marine Mom -- OoRah!

That last one deserves some kind of prize for sheer chutzpah. We should blame the citiizens of New Orleans for the Bush being alseep for almsot a week after Katrina and for his administration's incompetence?

Bottom line..these people acted like Bush won a cosmic Macho Award for strutting around like a faux movie star in "Top Gun". Now a Nobel Prize Peace makes them hytrerical and angry? Are you kidding me?

They likely would have given it to Hillary, as well, had she won for changing the tenor of politics. WOuld the nuts be as bad? Would they be worse? (Could they be worse?)

In any case, it's an insane reaction to see this as all negative.

The liberal Left, in its zeal to attack the crackpot Right, finds itself defending the indefensible.

Obama doesn't deserve the Prize, because he has continued all the actions of the Bush administration.

Anyone not too lazy can look at the record. I don't need to recount it here.

It takes little imagination to know what that dead child in Pakistan -- killed by Obama's drone -- and its grieving mother would think of Obama's award.

And I wonder how many innocent people have been killed by Marine Mom's kid and his friends while "fighting for [us] left wing socialists." No thanks, Mom.

This is truly an ignorant, heartless nation.

I am afraid...

Big surprise there, OneCitizenSpeaking. That's the one thing we can always count on from your ilk - to be afraid of whatever Rushbo et al tell you you should fear, while turning a blind eye to the things that are eating away at the foundations of the economy, democratic government, etc etc etc. I wonder where we'd be now if George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and the rest were the type of fearful men you are? Probably we'd all be singing "God Save the Queen."

As for you, "Marine Mom", and your insistence that pointing out that you're a batshit lunatic is somehow a slam against "the troops" and your claims that you speak for our brave fighting men and women, I've just got two words for you: Pat Tillman.

Considering the amount of damage that President Obama has wreaked on America, ...

Outside of not being white and a wingnut, what "damage" has he done to the US? And "disrespected the country to furriners" is not damage, it's merely one of the passel of shrieks coming from Rushbo and his minions.

I am afraid ...

That's obvious. Try not to let it magnify your ignorance, though.

I know who legitimately nominated both Rush and Bill Handel.

Sure you do.

It appears, at least to me, that the Committee was trying to bolster Obama's prestige and influence his future actions.

Yes, because that's what the Nobel Committee is all about. Or perhaps they're not.

Whatever you might think about Rush Limbaugh, it remains that he single-handedly revitalized AM talk radio through his personal communication skills.

And how does that matter to anyone other than the wingnuts who breathlessly await every directive from Their Leader?

As for AIG, Citibank and others, there was a confluence of corporate greed, ...

So a little while ago, they had did "not affect us all". Now - oops - they DID have an effect, but it was the regulators fault (among others). I guess Obama should have made the SEC do their jobs a little better, eh?

It was Jimmy Carter that was responsible for the rise of IslamoFascism.

And how might that be? Not that you have any idea what IslamoFascism is, other than some vague scary notion of brown people wanting to take over the United States because "they hate us for our freedom".

It was Bill Clinton who failed to defend the America and let Osama bin Laden off the hook.

Well, the 8/6/01 PDB, the lack of concern for Islamic terrorism in general, and Osama still being alive show us all that you really meant to write "It was George Bush ...".

Then there was the local government which disarmed law-abiding citizens leaving them prey to roving bands of criminals and vandals.

Yes, except that most, if not all, of those stories were proved to be false.

And as far as your Katrina "reasoning" in general: the locals - including Ray Nagin (R) - had their share of screwups. But the fact remains that Bush, Brownie, and FEMA gave Katrina less attention than I give a one-minute downpour when I've left my car windows open. Since FEMA is sorta supposed to take the lead on stuff like that, it would have been nice if they had done their jobs, instead of saying "Gee, let's let Dubya go a-pickin' and a-grinnin' with ole Whatsisname". And if Bush had any semblance of a clue, or sense of responsibility, he would have told Brownie to get his shit together PDQ.

My experience with FEMA during the Northridge Earthquake was outstanding.

That must have been during Bush's first term, hunh?

And, as a side comment: hobnobbing with all those scientific Nobel recipients hasn't made you any smarter. Although I have to admit your grammar and spelling is a lot better than the typical wingnut. [Except for "porriage", which we'll call a typo.]

CitizenTooStupidToStopDigging writes: I know who legitimately nominated both Rush and Bill Handel. It was publicly announced.

No, you don't, as previously explained. Rush was an unsolicited nomination of frequent Limbaugh Radio Show Guest, Nuisance Lawsuit Filer, and Wingnut Welfare Recipient Mark Levin, and as such, has no standing as a valid nominee.

Handel, an AM Radio personality-- anyone starting to see a pattern here?-- claims he was nominated but will not name the mysterious "Southern California Congressman" he claims did so.

That's lie number seven and eight, respectively, without even going further than your first paragraph.

Keep digging. Your credibility is down there somewhere, dummy.

"I respect former President Bush for the safety he provided to America on his watch; not the cronyism, corruption and incompetence that was rampant in his Administration."

What safety? First 9/11 happened, and somehow that made the guy whose watch it occurred on _MORE_ qualified to run the country? Does Not Compute.

Then came the Anthrax Mailer, the Beltway Snipers, two wars, a color-coded alert system that will never, EVER, go below "yellow", and a major US city being washed into the Gulf of Mexico. I hope you'll excuse me if I point out none of that looks like "Safety" to me.

"Considering the amount of damage that President Obama has wreaked on America, one needs to first note that he has continued, enhanced and/or extended most of the Bush policies."

Huh?
If those policies were the Bestest Thing Evar when Bush did them, they're STILL good, right? Or do they magically turn Bad when a Democrat lays their flower-wilting, pestilence-spreading, silver-tarnishing touch upon them?

"His handling of finance, the War in Afghanistan, global warming and cap-and-trade marks him as incredibly naive and compliant to an international community that is jealously laughing at America as they plan to plunder our Treasury."

Yeah! That treasury is for AIG and Halliburton to plunder, damn those piratical furriners!

I swear, it's like wingnuts scrutinize every event in the world with one and only one criteria: "How can this be used to make Obama look bad?"

Forsooth! What maketh a Republican? It is nay their concourse with farm yard animals, nor the influence of witches evil and vile which Sarah Palin protected herself against to no avail since she is cursed with looks , teeth and round eyes to be sure, as Mrs. Bugs Bunny. These animal liasons and witch doctor exercises would produce a human stupid to excess and thinking themselves a genius, but not viciously ignorant and base. It is I that declare that these Republicans are the spawn of a moronic sort of evil not countenanced and taken seriously until present times. The offspring of those we thought dead and gone. Our Neanderthal adversaries surviving in myth as ogres and trolls have their genes survive in Republicans. Ironically, the very tolerance that Republican ape folk oppose is what made their reemergence possible. Before these enlightened times they would have been assigned pig sty cleaning and honey pot removal. These days they are allowed to voice their opinions on the internet and loudly, frequently and obnoxiously do so. As well as having talk show positions in which they shout, cut people off and generally act like the total assholes (From a true human perspective.) they are. What to do about them? Well, for one, the human press corps which obviously excludes the stoolies workin for FOX news, should treat Republican rantings like they deserve to be treated. Like the exclamations and monologues of exercised inmates on a stressful asylum outing. It would be a start to keep civilization going. Give these Republicans a free hand and the mushroom clouds will blossom over a World with poverty and misery galore while a few very very rich are living the life of Riley.
