"Top Cock" Kerik's Mug Shot, Jailing Unleash Media Schadenfreude

"Kerik's Mug Shot is Released," says the New York Times. Well, guess even broadsheets are tabloids now. The Daily News has it too, and even bigger, and the Post headlines the "disgraced ex-police commissioner"'s incarceration story "Kerik in the clink."

Also, Eyewitness News anchor Bill Ritter referred to Kerik as New York's former "top cock" on air last night. Dry mouth, or Freudian slip? Everyone thinks it's funny ("just as accurate as if he'd managed to say 'top cop'"). Ritter has apologized for his "quick mistake"...

As long experience has shown, the media love to pile on the big boys when they're down. Maybe there's a little more to it in this case. Kerik's lawyer said last summer that the feds were using the press to slam Kerik. Reporters may have interpreted that to mean they were serving as patsies, and it may have rankled -- especially after the press had been so instrumental in building Kerik's reputation in happier days.

Today Kerik finds little sympathy on the blogs. "This is the man George W. Bush and Rudy Giuliani wanted to put in control of Homeland Security for the entire nation," says lefty blogger Oliver Willis. But even at cop and cop fan board Thee Rant, Kerik gets little support. "Bernie ran out of 'get out of jail free' cards," says one commenter. Also, "I saw thru this guy from Day One," "He's an A#1 loser with a capital L," etc.

"He has really been abandoned," says Michael Wolff. "Not only by Judith Regan and Rudy Giuliani but by the media." He notes that Kerik "was foisted on the Bush White House by Giuliani" and wonders that while Kerik is behind bars "Giuliani walks free... I do not mean to suggest that Giuliani should be in jail (though I would put him there if I could), or that Bernie Kerik shouldn't be. I'm just saying that Giuliani should not be free of Bernie Kerik and that he should not be governor."

And that's about as good as Kerik gets in his downfall. Looks like the cockroaches have finally gotten to him.

R. Porrofatto says:

It's such a shame that the Tombs is no longer the Bernard B. Kerik Complex. This may be a federal rap, but one might still have cherished the hope that some day we'd enjoy the spectacle of an inmate incarcerated in the very pokey named after him. Sigh. It's not to be. Bloomberg robs us of all our pleasures.

Daniel says:

What's better, Porro, is that Kerik is serving his time at Westchester County Jail. That jail was built by Worth Construction – which is also under investigation for being mobbed up.

Worth Construction was also a contributor to former Westchester DA Jeanine Pirro (it became an issue in her 2006 campaign).

Both Pirro and Kerik are both under investigation are under investigation, after Pirro tried wiretapping her husband with Kerik's help.

Curioser and curioser…

Ned says:

Mr. Kerik is a hot looking bear. Can you imagine the sheer thrill that there will probably be five to eight COs in the room during Bernie's strip search. They will probably draw straws to determine which two COs will have the opportunity to spread Mr. Keriks naked bear buns to be examined. This is what is commonly known as getting to the 'crack' of the matter. In all fairness the Village Voice should send Michael Musto to Riker's to do a solo interview (I say interview) with Mr. Kerik.

goldengrain says:

Guilliani had introduced Kerik as his closest friend.
Police vice squads have been disbanded by communities because there was no way anyone could find that would prevent their corruption. Kerric was the head of the vice group in Paterson.
Paterson police were so corrupt that the feds took them over.

Gullinai's dad had been in the mob.

That these guys were both so obvious and actually made an attempt at national office shows how deeply this country has sunk. It also shows the stinking basis for the superficial idealism of today's new conservatism.

Halloween Jack says:

Maybe some of the newsies who have seen their friends and colleagues lose their jobs have finally wrapped their brains around the notion that they spent part of the dying years of their profession ensuring that one of the most worthless people ever to set foot in NYC would never have to find honest work again. Hubris sure is a bear. I'm still gonna make popcorn, though.
