Fort Hood's Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan: Jihadi, Psycho, Both?

Bits and pieces are coming out about Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the shooter in custody in the Fort Hood massacre. Records show he was born in Virginia, graduated from Virginia Tech and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences' F. Edward Hebert School Of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland, made Captain in 2003 and Major in May of this year, and practiced psychiatry at Walter Reed and, since July, at the base's Darnall Army Medical Center.

His cousin says he didn't want to be deployed to the war zones of Iraq or Afghanistan, and that Hasan believed "Muslims should stand up and fight against the aggressor" (meaning, it would seem, the United States), which suggests that the U.S. Army was a poor career choice...

Texas Senator Kay Hutchison says (without Army confirmation) that Hasan was scheduled to be deployed imminently. His former imam says he had been looking, without success, for a religiously observant Muslim wife; a former colleague says he reacted with "open glee at the death of some soldiers by a suicide bomber."

The Last Crusade finds that Hasan attended an Arab International Festival in Dearborn, Michigan this summer, where attendees "munched on rolled pita sandwiches, shawarma, tabouli, hummus and baklava," which Last Crusade finds dispositive of jihad. CNN has footage of Hasan in traditional Arab dress on the morning of the shooting, ordering hash browns and coffee at 6:20 a.m. About seven hours later he started shooting.

Matty B says:

When our politicians - under the illusion that suicide terrorism is a concrete, defeatable entity, like a nation - go on about eradicating "havens" in Afghanistan and elsewhere, they should remember this, and incidents other domestic jihadists who developed beliefs and performed actions all on their own.

This man, if incited by jiihadist ideals, didn't need a hideout in the Middle East, or Osama Bin Laden (a mere figurehead our country could rally against in the aftermath of a tragedy), or any of the other alleged hallmarks of Islamic terrorism. All it took was desperation, and our own unrelenting and dispassionate policies, to push him over the edge.

Such is the case with the impoverished farmers and shepherds in third-world countries - their actions against the U.S. are not born out of some innate ideological radicalism, but unfortunate circumstances only enhanced by military presence. It seems irrational to an educated Westerner, but none of us have ever experiences such indigence combined with such persistent fear.

The best homeland defense, it seems, is to get troops the hell out of there.

(My apologies for the lengthy post.)

Matty, stop making excuses for this hateful murderer. His hate is his fault, and he should be held accountable for it.

He reportedly made blog posts praising the joys of suicide bombing.

Why are we so afraid to call an Islamofascist terrorist a terrorist? Political correctness?

Hashbrowns, eh? Who knew they were terrorist fodder? So much for freedom fries. How about jihadi hash? Think about that the next time you're at McDonald's. Or should I say McFatwa?

Because douche, he's not a warrior.

The point, for dimwits who miss it, is that Rick wants everyone to use his language because he believes he is politically correct, douche.

Matty B says:

I do believe I used the word "terrorism" in my post. It's a pretty amorphous term, and we can delve into semantics, but that wasn't my point.

Rather, I'm speculating as to what drives people to commit acts of terror, mass murder or whatever you fancy to call it. Hatred isn't innate - it comes from somewhere, is sparked by something. I'm not excusing the shooter's role in this - his actions were perfectly wretched - but he may not have arrived at that point had our leaders not kept up a heinous, reasonless war for eight years (among other things). Certain aspects of our soceity drives certain people to the edge. It's a malignancy. If our policies were more sane, more compassionate, then there'd be less of this shit going on.

As I saw written on the Washington City Paper's website: "Sick shit begets sick shit."
