Staten Island hit and run was a family affair

It makes a sort of twisted sense that Allmir Lekperic would try to find a way to wiggle out. Lekperic, 26, was driving with a suspended license when he allegedly struck and killed an elderly Staten Island couple on their way to Thanksgiving Eve mass carrying canned goods for a church food drive.

Lekperic, who had 28 previous suspensions in the past three years, fled the scene in the white Econoline van he used for his home improvement business, which was also unlicensed. His current suspension was for not answering a summons in September.

None of that argues a firm grasp of consequences.

Apparently, one of the people sheltering his disconnect from the harsh realities is his sister, schoolteacher Mirsada Nikezi, who was arrested for trying to give him an alibi. Lekperic, for his part, was already out on $50,000 bail.

Lekperic ditched the van and seemingly convinced his sister to tell police that it was stolen before the accident, but then turned himself in the following morning. According to the criminal complaint, he told police "I'm here in regards to the accident. I was in an accident earlier and I know where the van is. It's by Wagner High School, on the corner. It's a white van."

He was arraigned on Thursday in Brooklyn and charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, a felony with a seven year maximum sentence, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle in the third degree, a misdemeanor. A spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan said that other charges may be brought as the investigation continues. For some reason, Lekperic chose to attend his Thanksgiving arraignment in track pants and a t-shirt which read "Adrenaline Rush."

His sister, who was arraigned the following day, is charged with misdemeanor falsely reporting an incident in the third degree. The DA's spokesman said she too may face additional charges. She was released on her own recognizance. The father-and-son lawyers representing the pair, John Murphy II and John Murphy III, both emphasized the presumption of innocence.

Ironically, the pastor and school principal of Our Lady Queen of Peace, the church Peter Sabados 78, and his wife Lillian, 77, attended five times a week, had a meeting with two representatives of the Department of Transportation hours before the accident to discuss dangerous traffic conditions on the street where the two were killed. The Rev. Pancrose Kalist said that he and Theresa Signorile requested that the DOT install a camera to deter drivers who blow through the light at the corner of 3d Street and New Dorp Lane.

The funeral for Mr. and Mrs. Sabados will be held Monday morning at Our Lady Queen of Peace, followed by burial at Resurrection Cemetery.

M Taffy says:

It seems highly unlikely the driver could have been suspended 29 times in 3 years. This is a tragedy for all sides. I doubt he chose to wear those clothes to the police station, it's probably what he had on at the time of the accident.

It seems improbable that he couldn't have gotten a change of clothes brought to him, if he didn't have time to change before he turned himself in.

This is a really sad situation. My prayers are with both families. The fact that hours earlier there discussions about the dangerous traffic conditions on that spot lends credence to the fact that this was an accident. A sad and horrifying accident. How do we know the so-called unlicensed business was something in the works this young man planned on starting? Speculation, rumor and assumptions are a pox on the media. The author of this article should be ashamed that she had to resort to such cheap tricks to sensationalize what is very evidently a tragedy for all concerned.

Graham Morgan says:

I come from a long line of police officers. If you're at all familiar with the arrest and arraignment process, you would know that no one would have been able to bring this kid clothes. Who knows if he was even being held at the same precinct where he turned himself in.

28 suspensions in three years is an exaggeration. However many there really are, whether or not his suspensions were as a result of parking tickets makes a big difference in this kid's case as well.

Bottom line: You want to report on the crime beat, Julia? Do more than piggy back on what you read in other people's stories.

For a Village Voice reporter to quote an "SILive" article is disturbing. Did you notice that article also claimed this kid was born in the U.S. but may face deportation? These are your sources? You should be out of a job.

Nicholas says:

The "SI Live" website is the web version of the Staten Island Advance. The same article was in print regarding Lekperic's vague citizenship status. He may have dual US and Albanian citizenship.

BTW, why was this guy released on only $50k bail? The fact that he was arraigned before a sadly more lenient Brooklyn judge (who won't have to face S.I. voters) may have something to do with it.

The intersection in question is a problem because drivers heading west towards Richmond Road sometimes race through the traffic signal at New Dorp Lane & 3rd Street as it is turning yellow or even when it has just turned red. By all accounts Lekperic raced through a solid red signal at high speed.

graham says:

The kid was born in Staten Island. Even if he does hold dual citizenship, last I checked dual citizenship doesn't allow for deportation. Dual citizenship also isn't "vague" citizenship. That's shoddy journalism from a shoddy local rag. VV shouldn't be quoting from a small peanuts paper unable to do simple fact checking. I did more with the internet and a phone call than they did.

By all accounts he ran a red light? By wrong accounts, maybe. According to the police report, the couple wasn't crossing in the crosswalk so whatever color the light was is of no consequence. No mention was made of speeding or racing through a solid red light in the police report or crim complaint.

$50k is pretty standard when someone isn't considered a flight risk. This guy turned himself in well before the police had any inkling who he was so that suggests he isn't.

Sad situation for all concerned. I've seen enough of these situations to know everyone has either fight or flight tendencies. We'd all love to think we'd do the former.
