Turnout High in Maine Gay Marriage Referendum

By Roy Edroso, Tuesday, Nov. 3 2009 @ 5:13PM

Categories: Elections, Gay Marriage, LGBTQ
mainepink.jpgTurnout is reported heavy in Maine, where voters are faced with a referendum on the marriage equality law passed last spring. ("No" on Question 1 means yes to keeping gay marriage.) State officials say voting is exceeding expectations, and over 100,000 absentee ballots have been filed.

This is seen as encouraging news by many gay marriage supporters. Less sanguine are opponents, who are lashing out at "Maine homosexual activists" who "promote counterfeit (same-sex) 'marriage'," etc. "If cold weather and occasional showers keep seniors away from the polls throughout the day," glumly surmises Thomas Peters of National Review, "marriage in Maine could be in trouble." And the governor is supporting a "No" vote.

Don't open the champagne yet, though...

Late polls have been very tight on the issue. "Last we heard," says our own Michael Musto, "the hate-mongers had way more money with which to pollute the airwaves and sway sensible people to vote for discrimination, so they have a Bloomberg-like advantage." Gay Species frets that the polls shouldn't be this close because "the No on Question 1 team, unlike EQCA [which failed to defeat the California gay marriage ban], is very professional and well-heeled. Moreover, its principals did not vacation in Europe this past week."

Well, that's something else to watch closely tonight instead of the mayor's race.

Larry Little says:

The Catholic Church with millions of tax free dollars is using that money to legislate hatred, bigotry, discrimination, depression and sadness in one bite. This would be a law that approves an illegal act of discrimination by allowing the church to make legislative decisions. The Catholic Church also thinks that life saving abortions is murder. They also approved of burning at the stake and torture, an attitude that created 400 different kinds of Protestants.

Matt says:

I hope the yes vote wins. As for Michael Musto's comment, the only haters here are those who think marriage can be distorted to fit their own perverse views. I.e. same-sex marriage advocates.

Jack says:

Hate is when you support children being brought up without mothers and fathers, such indifference to future generations is far more of a crime than removing the right for gay couples to marry.

Matt and Jack...if you don't believe in gay marriage, then don't marry each other.

Andrew Flinders says:

So the Catholic Church is the largest supplier of anti HIV meds? It's too bad it help spread the disease with its ban on contraception and condoms.

Frank J says:

I'm from South Africa. In my country I cannot get married (archaic religous term), but I can enter into a Civil Union. And that's exectly what my partner and I are going to do in 2010.

Our law was passed at national (Federal) level, so it's a right all the citizens of our land can exersize.

I can't for the life of me understand why it took over 10 (Bush) years to ammend the definition of a Hate Crime at Federal level. In the same vein I can not understand why, for two consenting adults, something as fundamental as sharing the same rights and obligations of Marriage is not dealt with at Federal level. It peturbs me that one day my right to be 'married' could be here today and gone tomorrow State for State..

I invite all readers to sub the word Negro (yes I'm doing that deliberately) for Gay before naysaying this fundamental issue.
