Fighting Corporate Greed and Finding Love: An Occupy Wall Street Wedding

via Meg Robertson
Micha in her gown.
If the Occupy Wall Street protests don't eventually force stricter banking regulations or greater wealth equality, the movement can at least take responsibility for one love connection. Emery Abdel-Latif, 24, and Micha Balon, 19, met at Zuccotti Park in September and tied the knot today in a ceremony officiated by an NYU chaplain. Thanks to MSNBC's Meg Robertson, you can listen to part of the wedding here. Congratulations, Emery and Micha, you now have a pretty cool story to tell when people ask where you first met.

Town Psyched About Celebrity Tree

Another tree, another 15 minutes.
A most exciting thing has happened in Miffinville, Pennsylvania, pop: 2,500. The Daily News has found, because some citizen or elected official could not keep his or her big mouth shut, that a 75-foot-tall spruce tree "now under 24-hour police protection" is the biggest star to come through Miffinville since Bobbie Jean Letrusco starred in the high school adaptation of Our Town, bringing 2,499 people to tears. (Disclaimer: We know of no Bobbie Jean Letrusco from Miffinville, or anywhere. But surely they've had a celebrity before, or they wouldn't have this "leaking secrets" thing down so cold!)

Dog Balances Things on Nose, Is Awesome

Have you heard of Jub Jub, a St. Bernard who can balance, like, ANYTHING on his nose, from iPad to carrot to baseball to wastebasket to booze to Egg McMuffin? He can also balance a 6-week-old kitten on his head. Clearly, everyone should have a Jub Jub, who, his owner says, "Is a good dog and especially obedient... He got more treats than he should have during the shooting of this..."

He deserves them!

High Line Gets a Roller Rink

After the "happy virus" of Rainbow City, the High Line has another adorable installation set to open next Thursday. Strap on your skates and get ready for "the High Line Rink." As part of "The Lot," which includes a booze and food truck court and is situated at the end of the High Line's recently opened second section, the rink will feature "regularly scheduled theme nights." Are they taking suggestions? How about Xanadu? [NBC, WSJ]

Mike Bloomberg Will Preside at the Wedding of Advisers John Feinblatt and Jonathan Mintz

Feinblatt and Mintz
New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, in a gesture that shows a bit of his softer side, has offered to marry his chief policy adviser, John Feinblatt, and his partner of 14 years, Jonathan Mintz, who is the city's commissioner for consumer affairs. Delicately, Bloomberg mentioned that he didn't even know if the two wanted to marry, but if they did, well -- "If you'd like me to do it, I'd really love to," he said to Feinblatt, who got the go-ahead from Mintz, setting in motion the plan for "City Hall's first gay wedding," reports the New York Times. The two, who have two daughters together and took them ring shopping after the proposal, will be married on July 24, the first day that same-sex marriages will happen in New York City, on the lawn of Gracie Mansion.

Office of Gabrielle Giffords
The office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was the victim of a shooting in Tucson this winter that killed six and injured 13, has released new photos of the congresswoman on her Facebook page. Apart from her cropped haircut, she seems almost unchanged; there are few visible signs that she took a bullet in the head only five months ago. Giffords poses outside on the lawn of her Houston hospital. In one, she smiles directly into the camera, and in the other she's with her mother, Gloria Giffords.

Todd Bieber, Tweest Man in Town, Plants Illegal Brooklyn Garden

Categories: Aw, Brooklyn, Video

Todd Bieber seems like a really swell guy. He's the same Brooklyn man who, over a two-month period earlier this year, found a roll of film shot in Prospect Park during a blizzard and conducted a search, complete with YouTube videos, for its rightful owners. (He found them in France, because of course he did.) In this new clip, he's back cuter than ever, growing an illegal garden in a neglected patch of dirt in Brooklyn.

Man Proposes to Girlfriend Via East Village Mural

marriage mural EV.jpg

They actually make guys like this? 28-year-old Jeff Gurwin flouted the silly on-one-knee tradition and proposed to girlfriend Caitlin Fitzsimons, 27, by having a mural painted on Avenue A and 2nd Street. She said yes, thankfully. Would have been mighty awkward if this thing was up there and she'd said no!
