New York City Gets Adorable New Scaffolding

walkthisway_3.jpg
Scaffolding, pre-makeover.
What is the true blight of New York City? The awful, industrial scaffolding that crops up to hide the beauty of attractive things and make ugly things uglier, usually when you least expect it, truly ruining any photo op you might be planning on having. Just a fact of life in a city, and something we have to get used to, grin and bear, and ignore? No longer! The New York Times reports that a new, prettier scaffolding prototype will soon be enjoying itself on a street near-ish you. One will be installed in December in front of 100 Broadway, an office building in Lower Manhattan. This is very exciting.

Worst 'Cosmetologist' Ever Sealed Wounds With Krazy Glue and Paper Towels

EPIKG92548R_2_1.JPG
So wrong.
Here is a story in contention for the most unpleasant WTF of the day. A New York City cosmetologist (although she was unlicensed, so it's hard to accurately call her that, even more so when you get to the Krazy Glue part) has been convicted of criminally negligent homicide for injecting silicone into the butt and thighs of Fiordaliza Pichardo and "then sealing her festering wounds with Bounty paper towels and Krazy Glue," reports the Daily News. Pichardo, who was 43, later died of cardiac arrest.

Fashion Week: Heavy Heads at Electric Feathers, Hawaiian Hair at Timo Weiland

Electric Feathers
Heads looked heavy at the Electric Feathers collection, where models were outfitted in turbans and scarves to complement the wearable flats and flowy frocks. Turns out, the gear was made of lightweight silk with silk piping to hold Ellen Johnson's textured hairstyles.

"I mainly used Shu Uemura products because they have the perfect weight and versatility needed as a foundation to hold the scarves," explained Johnson. "The entire collection is made up of convertible pieces that are well-suited for traveling. It brings to mind exotic locations, play, and versatility in any occasion. This affected the way I chose to leave the hair uncoiffed as if one might just tie a scarf in or pin it up while traveling."

"Anything but natural, please."
Jen Kao's Spring 2012 collection embodied a glamorous-yet-tough-girl flair that was edgy and vibrant, but the hairstyles and headpieces that complemented the outfits really added the extra oomph. "The inspiration was glam grunge and Tank Girl, the comic," said head hair stylist, Peter Grey.

Fashion Week: Sore Feet and Simplicity with Yigal Azrouël

Left, left, left, right, left
As one can imagine, it's exhausting to stand still in five-inch platform heels -- but to march in them for over an hour is just painful. Models had to stand in grids, rotate, and walk around the Highline Stages this Saturday to present Yigal AzrouĆ«l's contemporary line, Cut 25. Luckily, the staff would come in occasionally to give the models water through a straw and make sure that they were replenished enough to do more strutting.

Fashion Week: Models Struggle to Take Out 300 Bobby Pins at Falguni and Shane Peacock

Just what is holding that hair in place?
Joan Rivers sat in the front row alongside television personality LaLa Anthony Friday night when Falguni and Shane Peacock debuted their spring 2012 line. They seemed to enjoy the sassy cutouts, asymmetrical silhouettes, and gold accents. But what really caught the eye was the hair and makeup.

Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty (and Blue Lips!) at Richard Chai

Blue raspberry Blow-Pops provide a similar effect
Blue lips and orange lids worked cohesively and brilliantly at Richard Chai's Spring Fashion Show on the first morning of Fashion Week, but I would definitely say this isn't a look I'd try for the everyday beauty routine.

Backstage in the Theater, there were models running around, going from station to station to get perfectly primped for the presentation. I noticed supermodel Liu Wen with vibrant colored eyelids and had to get makeup artist, Emi Kaneko, to explain the look. "It's Harajuku meets Venice Beach, like a Japanese surfer girl."

Women Who Get a Lot of Botox Are Being Judged by Society

real_housewife_botox_pm.jpg
In a delightful new study, it has been determined that women who get so much Botox that they can no longer make normal facial expressions or appear basically human may not be viewed so positively as women who "age naturally." The University of Toronto embarked on this study, which looked overall at the ways women attempt to battle aging -- by avoiding the sun, using moisturizers, getting injections, and having their faces "done." Ultimately, the less a woman tried to aggressively mess with her face and what it was inevitably going to be after years of living plus gravity, the more that woman was seen as someone people wanted to hang out with, and probably hug occasionally, given the right relationship.

Alyssa Campanella, the New Miss USA, Is OK With Medical Marijuana; Anthony Weiner's Staffers Still Have Jobs -- for the Moment

ap_missusa_kd_110620_wg.jpg
• Meet your new Miss USA, Miss California, Alyssa Campanella, 21. Here's what she had to say about legalizing marijuana: "Well, I understand why that question would be asked, especially with today's economy, but I also understand that medical marijuana is very important to help those who need it medically," she said. "I'm not sure if it should be legalized, if it would really affect, with the drug war. I mean, it's abused today, unfortunately, so that's the only reason why I would kind of be a little bit against it, but medically it's OK." She's real pretty. [CNN, CBS]
