The fourth police sketch in connection to the Brooklyn sex attacks.
The NYPD has taken a suspect into custody for one of the attacks in the series that's haunted south Brooklyn since March. Adolfo Martinez, 26, of Sunset Park was taken into custody last night around 9 p.m. in connection with a groping on Monday night in that neighborhood. Martinez was identified from surveillance footage and the victim's description. He hasn't been charged with additional crimes, though other women who've been victimized in the area viewed him in lineups yesterday and today.

Don't get too excited: police have said there may be as many as three suspects in the 12 attacks (and one rape) in the pattern that has been in motion since March, meaning one or two people are at large. There is also a fifth (!) police sketch now. How many sexual predators are involved in this?

Cops: Attack in Sunset Park Last Night Doesn't Fit the Pattern Of Other Brooklyn Assaults

Last night's attack in Sunset Park doesn't fit the pattern attributed to these suspects.
In the last few days there have been two sexual assaults in south Brooklyn, one in Windsor Terrace and the other in Sunset Park. The attack in Windsor Terrace, in which a young woman was groped from behind on Vanderbilt Street, is definitely the work of one of the suspects in string of recent assaults in the area, according to police. But last night's crime on 36th Street and Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park -- another woman grabbed from behind while walking -- isn't thought to be part of the pattern.

Petition Requests Free Self-Defense Classes for Brooklyn Women; Rapist Still at Large [Update]

krav maga.jpg
Not to be alarmist, but there is a serial sexual assailant on the loose in Brooklyn. We've written about him here before, but he's still at large; he's suspected of one rape and five attempted rapes along Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park, on 16th Street in Park Slope, and in Bay Ridge. The most recent attack was just a couple of weeks ago.

Now, a new petition is asking that free self-defense classes be offered to women in the area. Here's an excerpt from a letter by the author of the petition, a Park Slope resident, to Community Board 7 and Councilwoman Sara Gonzalez:

Man Wanted for One Rape, Five Attempted Rapes in Brooklyn

BK rapist sketch.jpg
A police sketch of the suspect.
Police are seeking a man wanted in connection to one rape and five attempted rapes in Brooklyn over the course of the last few months. Starting in March, the man, who is described as a 5'7" Hispanic male between 25-30 and approximately 165 pounds, attacked six women. Five of them managed to break free, but on June 4 at about 3 a.m. in Sunset Park, the man followed a 28-year-old woman into the vestibule of her apartment, forced her to the ground, and raped her.More >>

Who Is — and Isn't — the Sunset Park Rapist?

Three weeks ago, the cops arrested William Giraldo, 24, for allegedly raping one of four women who they think are victims of a serial rapist in the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn. But Giraldo (who was arraigned on the day he was supposed to be getting married in Florida) was charged with only one of the rapes, and yesterday the NYPD announced that a June 25 rape, also in Sunset Park, is also believed part of the pattern. Who is this unknown fiend? Above, you can catch a fleeting glimpse of the suspect.

Cynthia Lopez Murder: Daniel Elias Allegedly Claims Self-Defense — 'She Tried to Stab Me. I Choked Her. Is She OK?'

crimebeat-logo.jpg
If the relationship between Sunset Park couple Cynthia Lopez, 29, and Daniel Elias, 28, was as stormy as reported, its ending (her body was discovered shortly before 6 a.m. Monday, April 11) was all too predictable. But Elias got in the last word, accusing her of trying to stab him and then choking her to death in self-defense, according to info gathered by the Wall Street Journal.

Will Elias stick to that story? His family sure is.
