Incident at College of Staten Island Was a Pot Bust Gone Wrong

A cop subdues a man on the CSI campus, in a photo reportedly taken yesterday.
Yesterday we wrote of a developing incident at the College of Staten Island that, at first, had rumors of a shooting swirling among students and on Twitter. It turned out there was no shooting at all, as the school explained yesterday in a statement. As for what really happened -- an "off-duty member of the school's auxiliary service" (the Advance calls him a cafeteria porter) was caught smoking pot in a bathroom and was confronted by a cop who tried to arrest him. The man, whom the Post identifies as Cory Holmes, 39, ran to a parking lot, where he struggled with the police officer and, according to cops, tried to take the officer's gun. Holmes was subdued, handcuffed, went into cardiac arrest, and later died at Richmond University Medical Center.

Police Investigation, Rumors of Shooting at College of Staten Island [Updated]

shootingrumor.jpg
According to a tipster, there's a developing situation at the College of Staten Island. The Advance reports that police officers have roped off a building for "an active police investigation" -- the College's Office of Public Safety told us they were not at liberty to answer any questions, and DCPI told us that they have sent an officer to get information. People are tweeting that this may involve a shooting, though that is currently unconfirmed.

SAT Cheating Ring Brings Organized Nerd Crime Back to the American Consciousness

ESHAGHOFFSAMUEL073092.jpg
Sam Eshaghoff
Sam Eshaghoff, a 19-year-old student at Emory University, has been busted as the alleged kingpin in an SAT cheating ring after apparently taking the test for at least six students from Great Neck North High School in Mineola, Long Island, making between $1,500 and $2,500 a pop. Which sounds sort of...smart? No, this is awful!

As Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice put it, "Colleges look for the best and brightest students, yet these six defendants tried to cheat the system and may have kept honest and qualified students from getting into their dream school. These arrests should serve as a warning to those taking the SAT this Saturday that if you cheat, you can face serious criminal consequences."

Are Campuses Doing Double Duty as Drug Havens? Plus: Which NYC School Is the Druggiest?

20101213_drugs.jpg

The New York Post is billing an "exclusive" this week about how Columbia University has systematically failed to report its drug-using student populace to police or prosecutors. The not-so-earth-shattering expose comes on the heels of last week's big frat house drug bust, which led to the arrests of 5 students. But it's actually a non-story because -- it turns out -- other city schools are just as bad, if not worse, at referring campus drug incidents to local authorities!
