Ray Kelly Goes Gangbusters: NYPD to Double Size of Anti-Gang Unit; Target Facebook Thugs

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly will give a speech later today in which he will announce his plans to double the size of the NYPD's anti-gang unit to combat the escalating problem of gang violence in the city.

Kelly is calling the plan "Operation Crew Cut," which will bring the number of detectives assigned to the department's anti-gang unit from 150 to 300 in response to a particularly violent summer, during which many innocent victims -- including several children -- were injured or killed by warring "street crews."

"We'll focus those resources not on large, established gangs such as the Bloods and Crips, but on the looser associations of younger men who identify themselves by the block they live on, or on which side of a housing development they reside," Kelly will say during his speech (see full text of the speech below). "Their loyalty is to their friends living in a relatively small area, and their rivalries are based not on narcotics trafficking or some other entrepreneurial interest, but simply on local turf."

Dead: Donzell Rogers

Thomas, 19, is accused of killing Donzell "Zelly" Rogers, 20, who was apparently just a bystander at the party. Cops have said the Very Crispy Gangsters, a crew operating out of the Fiorentino projects in East New York, was likely involved in the mayhem, in which at least 20 rounds were sprayed into a crowd by a crazed, stupid gunman. At least five others were wounded.

"Very Crispy Gangsters" Suspected in East New York Shooting

Donzell Rogers, slain at a "Freaky Friday" party.
The shooting at a house party in Brooklyn Friday night that killed one man and injured eight is suspected to be gang-related. Specifically a gang called the "Very Crispy Gangsters," which is a real name for a real gang. It would be almost funny if they weren't going around shooting people.

Jorge Arbaje-Diaz, Legendarily Crooked Cop, Gets 20 Years for Sticking Up Gangs

training day.jpg
Former NYPD officer Jorge Arbaje-Diaz was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday for living his life like Denzel Washington in Training Day. The cop would wear his uniform and use his badge and gun to rob gangs of epic amounts of drugs and profit. The judge in the case rejected a plea deal that would've given Arbaje-Diaz only 10 years because of the dirty officer's "untrammeled, unlimited, unchecked greed" and violation of public trust. Arbaje-Diaz also held "children at gunpoint," the Post reports. "You are the poster boy for a sentence that will deter others from the kinds of acts you engaged in," said the judge. From 2003-2008, Arbaje-Diaz stole over 1,650 pounds of cocaine and $4 million from dealers. [NYP]

Battle of the Gangster Nicknames: Italians Trounce Blacks

Vincent "No Good" Young
Don't count out the Mafia. Tom Robbins gives a sobering appraisal of why the Italian-American gangsters are more than just pop-culture figures.

But they're also pretty potent pop-culture pricks. Gangs of other colors and races are also dangerous, but Joe Coscarelli's list of Mafia nicknames from the recent big bust shows that when it comes to nicknames, Italian gangsters still have an edge over black gangsters.

There are exceptions. Just yesterday, feds in New Jersey indicted a bunch of Bloods for racketeering and other felonies. Topping the list is Vincent "No Good" Young. He's so bad that even one of his other nicknames, "Good," is simply a shortened version of "No Good." More »

Ronald Herron, better known as Brooklyn rapper and alleged Bloods leader Ra Diggs, was put in solitary confinement this week, reports the New York Post, for being a "publicity hound." Diggs prominently featured pictures of himself with guns on his Myspace and tweeted threats at cops. His October arrest was part of a federal indictment that included the arrests of 8 others on drug and gun charges. In an open letter released a month after his arrest, Diggs says he is innocent and that his freedom of speech has been violated.
