New York's Child Victims Act: What You Need to Know (UPDATE)

030.jpg
Since it's officially Timothy Cardinal Dolan week, why not keep the celebration going with a little more info on the Catholic leader's legislative positions?

Yesterday, Runnin' Scared wrote about Dolan's opposition to the Reproductive Health Act, which would codify abortion rights in the state, and de-criminalize late-term terminations.

Today, we bring you deets about the Child Victims Act, a pending policy which, if passed, would extend the statute of limitations for victims of sexual abuse.

Dolan has publicly opposed the law, sponsored by Rep. Margaret M. Markey (pictured here).

He says that it would basically bankrupt the church, even calling the proposed measure "unjust" to Catholics.

(Runnin' Scared reached out to the Archdiocese of New York for comment. We'll update when we hear back.)

Click for a brief explanation of this polemic policy.

Joe Paterno: Rest in Peace?

Joe Paterno has now been gone a week, and it would be nice if we could simply honor his memory without reservation.  I can't. And frankly, it troubles me that so many want to bury Paterno's faults along with the man.

Maybe it isn't the time to talk about such things so close to his death, but when exactly will the right time be?  Anyway, there's the story by Sports Illustrated's Tim Layden in the current issue. Paterno, he writes, "sought to transform the phrase student-athlete from an increasingly belittled oxymoron to the essential truth of his program. Football success would only come hand-in-glove with academic excellence."

Priest/Sex Abuse Scandal Takes Startling Turn: Catholic Church Official Faces Criminal Charges for Coverup

Monsignor William Lynn
The Catholic Church's sex-abuse scandal veered into uncharted waters Thursday with the indictment of one of former Philadelphia Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua's top aides. Monsignor William Lynn, now 60, is accused of shielding molester priests from detection and transferring them to unsuspecting parishes.

As the Philadelphia Daily News notes:

It's believed to be the first time a high-ranking Catholic official has been accused of being criminally accountable for covering up priest abuse. . . .As Bevilacqua's secretary for clergy, he was the Archdiocese's personnel director and responsible for investigating reports of priest sexual abuse from 1992 until 2004.
