David Paterson on Becoming New York Governor: 'I Think I'll Kill Myself'

Thumbnail image for patersonwife.jpg
Michelle Paterson, wife of accidental governor David Paterson, has plans for a tell-all book about the pair's time in Albany, and her press strategy has already kicked into high-gear before the writing is even complete. (Surprise #1: It includes slamming the press!) Cindy Adams at the New York Post has some teasers, including Michelle's "shock" at her husband's unwanted promotion. "I wasn't prepared," Mrs. Paterson says. "I was at my office like any other day when one morning David calls and says, 'Are you sitting down?' It was that famous Eliot Spitzer day. He said, 'There's been some sex scandal. There will be a conference in a couple of hours. And Spitzer will be out as governor . . . and I'll be the next governor.'" She says he was "very upset." His first words? "I think I'll kill myself."

Anthony Weiner Resigns for Real, Effective at Midnight

anthony weiner pressersad.jpg
Sexting congressman Anthony Weiner said he'd call it quits from the House of Representatives back on Thursday, explaining that the "distraction [he] created" -- with his penis, mostly -- makes his work "impossible." Today came the official letter, addressed to New York Secretary of State Cesar Perales and Governor Andrew Cuomo, and CC'd to John Boehner, the Speaker of the House, and Nancy Pelosi, the Minority Leader. It's short and sweet, taking effect at midnight, Tuesday, June 21, 2011. "It has been an honor to serve the people of Queens and Brooklyn," Weiner writes. See the whole thing after the jump, fancy Congress print and all.

Anthony Weiner Resigns; Benjy Bronk From Howard Stern Show Cheers 'Bye Bye, Pervert!'

Thumbnail image for anthony weiner presser2.jpg
Updated

Anthony Weiner spoke over a rowdy and disrespectful crowd member this afternoon, resigning from the United States House of Representatives. He spoke first of his mission to represent the New York middle class, but admitted, "The distraction that I have created has made that impossible." When he said he will resign, a few scattered cheers erupted from the crowd of mostly press and a very loud shout of "Bye bye, pervert!" could be heard.

Anthony Weiner to Resign, Reports New York Times

According to a breaking news alert from the New York Times, disgraced Rep. Anthony Weiner is set to resign over his sexting scandal.

The Times reports that Weiner "came to the conclusion that he could no longer serve after having long discussions with his wife, Huma Abedin," who had returned on Tuesday night after traveling on a global diplomacy mission with Hillary Clinton. (Abedin is reportedly pregnant.)

Weiner Support Grows With Crotch Shot Website

weinercatspi.jpg
Amateur PG-13 pornographers are standing up for the vain sexting congressman Anthony Weiner with a new website called baldly Weiner Support. Tag line: "Stick it out -- don't resign!" To prove how little they care about a handful of "lewd" pictures, the site's users have uploaded photos of their own "packages," to use Weiner's favorite term, and even included their names. "Why did we start a crotch shot site?" they ask. "Because we here at Weiner Support, FIRMLY believe that while we still have things on the agenda like a budget deficit measured in miles, loose nukes roaming around the world, and a carbon-drunk planet one shot away from falling off the bar stool, a crotch shot should be the last thing on the news cycle!"

John Edwards Mugshot: A Photoshopper's Dream

John Edwards' mug shot released.jpeg
The grin, the fancy haircut, the blue tie -- it's all there in ex-Senator and two-time presidential candidate John Edwards' mugshot, released today by the U.S. Marshals Service to the delight of the internet everywhere. Edwards pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and violating campaign laws for using hundreds of thousands of dollars from donors to hide his mistress Rielle Hunter. Presumably the above smile would be wiped off of his smug face if reports of a "revenge" videotape from his dead wife Elizabeth turn out to be true. In the meantime, bored photo manipulators, have at it. [CNN]

Anthony Weiner Was Warned: His Close Call With Political Punishment in 2009

Remember: We were just a Bloombergian notion away from Mayor Weiner.

While Bloomberg and his circle have stayed mostly mum as Anthony Weiner has melted down, a senior member of the mayor's 2009 election team tells the Voice that "It's pretty clear that driving Weiner out of the race was a good thing for New York" -- and suggests that the Queens pol thought he had reason to fear a more salacious follow-up to the Post's much-mentioned item (in March of 2009), "Weiner's 'Naughty' Hottie$," about foreign models' illegal campaign contributions as the congressman sought to give them access to coveted H1-B visas.

Anthony Weiner Nearly Doubles His Twitter Followers During Weinergate

weinercatspic.jpg
The Anthony Weiner scandal, which seems to get worse by the day, if not the hour -- pervy messages galore! Five ladies and counting! Possible underage girls! His wife is pregnant! -- has had an interesting side effect. Ironically, while the whole thing began with a wayward direct message that went public, Weiner's ineptness with Twitter has not hurt him in terms of gleaning new Twitter followers -- far to the contrary. We undertook an analysis of Weiner's Twitter history, via Twitter Counter, to see what, exactly, a sext scandal can do for your Twitter rep (if not for your political one.)

Spirit Airlines Hosting 'Weiner Sale' With 'Hard'-to-Resist Deals, Limited Pun Creativity

Let's hand it to Spirit Airlines, the budget travel company, for making a real stretch to capitalize on current events. Instead of leaving cheating website Ashley Madison all of the post-Anthony Weiner glory, Spirit connected a New York congressman to purchasing air travel with only one underwhelming pun: "The Weiner Sale: With Fares Too HARD to Resist." There's a photo of a hot dog, presumably because they couldn't legally license a picture of the congressman without being harassed by his people.
