The Plight of the Single Lady, the Political Edition: You decide to run for mayor. In doing so, you are attacked as "unfit for office" because you've "put [your] political ambition" ahead of getting married and having children, a/k/a you have "a suspect commitment to family values," while your opponent, a man, has two children and is therefore "a dedicated family man." Despite the imagery of a withered rose, this is not a joke. Tampa, Florida, mayoral candidate Rose Ferlita has been called "Unmarried, unsure, and unelectable," by a political action group that, Bust Magazine points out, is not a right-wing extremist group.

Cute Kid Pleas for Stolen Backpack While the World Laughs

Kids! We like 'em, sometimes. Especially when they're dealing with the very frustrating situation of having their backpack stolen with their Halloween candy -- and their PSP -- in it. If you stole this poor little man's backpack, you should know that karma has a way of making you its bitch. C'mon, it had Thor on it.

Jersey Shore's Trashiness Reaches Epic New Level: The Game Theory Approach

Thumbnail image for snookishowers.JPG
Everyone knows Jersey Shore is trashy, but is that trashiness quantifiable in any realistic way? Apparently so, as the guidos of Jersey Shore are being used -- in such an explicit dirty manner -- as pawns in luxury goods consumerism warfare. How?

Rick Lazio's History of Fearmongering with 'Misinformation' on Health-Care Reform. We Dig Up a Memo.

lazio-lip150.jpg
Lazio needed health care in 2000 when he fell and busted his lip in front of everyone on the first day of his futile Senate campaign. See Jon Stewart's clip.
By Scott Greenberg

Gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio's "Stop Obamacare" campaign sounds suspiciously like one of his fearmongering strategies from his days in Congress.

The Voice dug up an internal Lazio strategy memo from his first House re-election campaign, in 1994, that says health-care reform "would be a great issue to use misinformation against targeted groups to frighten them."

Kill the Lawyers? Firm At Heart of Goldman Case Is Already Dead.

Click for Blankfein spiel

Yeah, kill all the lawyers, but good luck eviscerating McKee Nelson, the law firm that vetted the sneaky scheme by Goldman Sachs to sell America short. It's long gone.

It won't be missed — except to answer questions. Some of the 901 pages of documents in the SEC's case against CEO Lloyd Blankfein's Goldman crew strongly hint that Goldman's outside counsel may have been directly involved in Goldman's lack of disclosure about how shitty this CDO was.

What did McKee Nelson know about Goldman's side-bet chicanery? Who knows? Should we expect someone to hang? As we keep pointing out (and now Bill Clinton agrees), Goldman probably didn't break any laws, except in God's eyes, and what's She going to do about it?

Trend Watch: Snakes Are Not Your Playthings, People

SNAKE-soft-toy-pattern_LR.jpg
There's a recurring theme that keeps popping up on our radar, and we're going to have to go ahead and mention it for all sorts of reasons, but mostly because, after thinking about it long and hard and engaging in a vigorous session of Rock-Paper-Scissors with Foster to finally settle the issue, it's become quite clear that we are not in support of this trend. At all.

The trend is... snakes.

Anthony Vassell, Bronx Hospital Worker, Steals Credit Cards from Dying Patient

creditcardpile.jpg
If you ever wondered whether you can still "get got" for your money once you've died, the answer is yes.

Police report that an emergency room worker at Westchester Medical Center has been arrested for stealing credit cards from a dying plane crash victim, and then going on a buck wild spending spree.

Anthony Vassell, 33, of the Bronx, allegedly stole the credit cards of Daniel Bisk, 53, of Pleasantville, who was flown to the hospital by medical helicopter after a small plane he was flying in crashed in the woods on November 22. The pilot was killed in the crash, and Bisk ultimately died of his injuries on December 1.

That's when Vassell, a patient care worker, saw an opportunity to ball out with a dead guy's money, police say.

Eta Eckstein, 92-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor, Booted by Brooklyn Landlord

eta-eckstein150.jpg
A survivor got kicked off the island — that's a real survivor we're talking about: Eta Eckstein, 92, was in a rehab facility when all her belongings from her rent-controlled Bay Ridge apartment were tossed into the street. Lost forever are the Holocaust survivor's heirlooms, family photos and papers, and so on. This was actuality, not a reality show.

Her grandson, Idan, tells NBC News the sad story. An attorney for landlord Morris Piller insists it was a legal eviction.
