More on the Kelly family's various travails this morning. First, NY1 reports that Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday he does not have any plans to resign over his involvement in the anti-Muslim film The Third Jihad. "I don't think there was any ill intent here, but it should not have been shown," Kelly said. Kelly would not answer any questions on the other scandal in his family: the alleged sexual assault perpetrated by his son Greg Kelly. [NY1]

Manhattan DA Launches Criminal Investigation into Elevator Tragedy at 285 Madison

elevatorpicture-thumb-250x187.jpg
Yesterday DNAinfo reported that the December 14 death of Young & Rubicam executive Suzanne Hart in an elevator at 285 Madison Avenue might have been prevented "if elevator repairmen had not violated city rules by rushing the lift back into service without the required O.K. from the Department of Buildings." According to sources, Transel Elevator Inc. did not follow through with the mandatory notification to the DOB following their work on the elevator -- that notification would have led to an independent inspection of the elevator, and, presumably, could have caught the glitch that led to Hart's death before the elevator was boarded by passengers.

NYCHA Elevators to Shut Down, But When?

nycha.jpg
As we mentioned earlier, Mayor Bloomberg announced that the city will be shutting down NYCHA elevators in preparation for Hurricane Irene. Our Harry Siegel points out that a time frame was not issued for this move that will potentially affect hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. An OEM spokesperson says that this will only be implemented in buildings located in Evacuation Zone A and any shutdowns will unlikely be enforced until after 5pm. A press conference will be held between 2pm and 4pm today that will hopefully clarify when exactly they plan on shutting down the elevators. Some NYCHA buildings are over 30 stories tall, so this information will be extremely important to residents attempting to evacuate. We can't find any specific mention of the elevator shutdown anywhere on the city's websites or in any hurricane preparedness PDAs or other downloads. We'll update as soon as a time frame is issued. This is a good time to review the city's evacuation zone map. [@nickgreene]

You're More Likely to Fall Up in an Elevator Than Down: Findings from the Elevator Museum

Esther Zuckerman
A series of metal plates covers one of the four interior walls of the Elevator Historical Society's newly opened museum in Long Island City. Placed in the center of the leftmost panel is founder and curator Patrick Carrajat's first acquisition, a small silver cover for an elevator interlock taken from a pile of material set to be discarded after he had helped out his father, an elevator mechanic, on a job in 1955.

"I took that home that day," he said pointing at the wall. "Sat there polishing it with Noxon until it got nicely cleaned up. And that was the beginning of a lifelong, some people call it, obsession. I don't, I don't think it's an obsession. I think it's just a great love and respect for the history of the industry that's made me a wonderful living for 50 years."

Scumbag Mugs Queens Man, 96, Gets $5, Knocks Him Down

Mugger-of-man,-96-Woodside-15210000-(frame-3802).jpg
Mugger of man, 96
Cops are looking for the chickenshit mugger who snatched $5 from a 96-year-old man in a Woodside elevator and then knocked him down. The Queens ambush happened at about 3:30 p.m. last Thursday at 30-81 54th Street. The old man avoided serious injury.

Tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit tips at nypdcrimestoppers.com or text info to 274637 (CRIMES), entering TIP577.

Cops say the guy demanded money, the old man pulled out $5 from his pocket, then the guy grabbed it and pushed him to the floor of the elevator. The mugger was unavailable for comment on how he's able to live with himself after doing something like that.
