Like Thanksgiving dinner, Republican debates are gatherings of familiar faces who routinely say such profoundly upsetting things that the only way you can cope with it is by getting drunk. In this week's Village Voice cover story, we take a long look at why the choice for gays and lesbians to marry (or not) is important. When recent Iowa Straw Poll winner Michele Bachmann stepped into the ring at Meet the Press yesterday, it was a doozy in terms of holding the presidential hopeful accountable on her dismal record on LGBT equality. ​We've been watching reactions all day about the fact that Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum signed a National Organization for Marriage pledge to eradicate gay marriage in the United States, in the event they become President.

There is little newsworthy about this development, except to see NOM somewhat unexpectedly emerge, fresh from their defeat in New York state, as a national player in Republican primaries.

However, as Jeremy Hooper pointed out over at Good As You, it is somewhat surprising to see that Mitt Romney has signed NOM's pledge, too.
