The Nets Left New Jersey Last Night After 35 Years, With A Loss, Of Course

The graphic on New Jersey Nets' front page
Last night marked the final home game of the New Jersey Nets, and although the franchise won't officially become the Brooklyn Nets until the beginning of the 2012-2013 NBA season (when they move from the Prudential Center to the Barclay Center), it's obvious those involved with the team couldn't leave Jersey fast enough, as evident by the graphic on their home page right now (the season isn't over yet... they're technically still the New Jersey Nets).

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie won't be missing the franchise, telling the Associated Press yesterday: "My message to the Nets is 'goodbye', they want to leave here and go to Brooklyn? Good riddance."

Nets Owners Mikhail Prokhorov and Jay-Z, Lording Over Madison Square Garden: A Gallery of New York's Most Awesome Billboard

Hey! Have you seen or heard about this awesome new mural of the New Jersey (soon to be Brooklyn) Nets' quirky Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov and smaller-shareholder-but-nonetheless-awesome co-owner Jay-Z? It's right above Madison Square Garden, where the New York Knicks play! Know what both teams have in common? That's right, they both want LeBron James to play for them!

Want to see that awesome mural? Here's a gallery:

Chuck Schumer Is a Congressional Hipster, the Senator Repping Williamsburg

05watercap-popup.jpg
There is no arguing that Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) is a fucking hipster. But is there anything of substance to speak of behind those thick frames, perhaps an Etsy account or a collection of rare 7" records? She certainly has nothing to do with the free concerts ("Pool Parties") that define the summer in Brooklyn for thousands of "the hippest of New York's hipsters," to which they "have flocked" for four years. The wealthy white man behind that vintage and/or ironic curtain is New York's Senator Charles E. Schumer, chairman of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee. The New York Times tells us today that Schumer's role in the well-attended hipster day camp is "big." Also big: Schumer's cred.

David Paterson on Barack Obama: "Who?"

obama_paterson--300x300.jpg
When David Paterson's poll numbers were hovering around the New York Knicks' winning percentage, President Barack Obama pretty much dropped a bomb, telling Governor Paterson he should straight up not run for office. Since then, the two haven't exactly been bros.

When Obama swung through Buffalo earlier this week, Paterson probably wasn't invited, but when asked he brushed it off by responding, "I don't know that. I know he's coming. I'd have to get back to you on that." It got testier from there.

So, How Was Betty White on SNL: The Best of All-Time or The Best Ever?

betty-white-snl.jpg
By all accounts, last night went pretty damn well for the 88-year-old Golden Girl, the oldest host in the show's 35 year history. If we're gauging immediate critical reaction chiefly online -- and why shouldn't we? -- then White came through in a big way on the penultimate episode of this season's Saturday Night Live. Echo chamber, be damned.

If we're judging based solely on Twitter, White singlehandedly saved comedy, stopped time, cemented lasting peace in the Middle East, performed the Lost finale as a one-woman show, cleaned up the oil spill in the Gulf and offed Justin Bieber. All set to a Jay-Z medley.

The Internet (re-)made her, now the Internet can praise her. And, indirectly, themselves.

Why Tonight's SNL with Betty White and Jay-Z Will Be a Success No Matter What

Betty-White-Jay-Z-On-SNL-500x357-1.jpg
If you read the Internet at all this week, you might be inclined to think there's a cross-generational, interracial sex tape about. As it turns out, all of the buzz is just based on an episode of Saturday Night Live, airing tonight, with host Betty White and musical guest Jay-Z. The show will also feature appearances from SNL veterans Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, and Rachel Dratch.

The Golden Girls' Rose and Password star landed the hosting job thanks to a viral campaign online beginning in January called "Betty White to host SNL (please)," which hit about half a million members before the show agreed to let it happen. White, 88, will be the oldest host in the show's history.

So sure, it's a bit of a senior citizen Cinderella story, but everyone endlessly hyping the episode is choosing to willfully ignore just how uneven and disappointing Saturday Night Live tends to be. But more importantly, it speaks to the age in which we live, with regard to television, and especially comedy.
