The Onion Wants a Pulitzer Prize; New York Post Puts Up iPad Paywall

onion_bg-766346.gif
In today's edition of Press Clips, our daily media column, the seriously unserious comedians at "America's Finest News Source" do the "I get no respect" routine, kicking off a campaign to score journalism's highest prize, while some more traditional reporters obscure their work, perhaps unintentionally, with orders from on high. Elsewhere, the slow crumbling of music magazines continues into a third decade (approximately), the White House horserace heats up on the press side and an important newspaper man does something extremely shady. Keith Olbermann Takes New York Times Out to the Ballgame; Anthony Weiner Invests in Them

Thumbnail image for angry-olbermann_492x331.jpg
Media reporter and movie star David Carr takes on a giant ego in a feature from this weekend's New York Times Magazine, posted online today, about Current TV host Keith Olbermann. After Olbermann's unceremonious exit from MSNBC, the loudmouth anchor spent most of year the silent except for on the internet, where he yelled a bunch and berated random bloggers, blog commenters and political enemies, like he used to do on television. But starting this week he's back on the air, albeit to much fewer viewers, and so in the ramp up, he gets the big profile treatment in a premiere weekly magazine. Unfortunately, for all of Olbermann's bombast, this one is bombshell-less, mostly more of what we already know. More inside Press Clips, our daily media column, plus Anthony Weiner's own stake in the Times and new rules for working at The Daily.

Julian Assange Essay Slams New York Times; Vice Media Is Rich as Hell and Respectable

Thumbnail image for Julian-Assange-dancing.jpg
The relationship between the New York Times and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange soured amid a power struggle, resulting in a detailed account of their break-up from the newspaper in which Assange is described as "a bag lady," as well as "arrogant, thin-skinned, conspiratorial and oddly credulous." The organizations have stopped working together directly, and in an April essay from the News Statesmen, Assange takes aim at the institution that spurned him, all while preaching for his own cause (something he does almost as well as he dances). More on Assange's latest written provocations inside our daily media column Press Clips, as well as stats on The Daily's struggling social media strategy, the successes of Vice Media and a video that explains why Arianna Huffington isn't wearing any shoes.

Rupert Murdoch's Kid Coming to NYC: James Murdoch Named News Corp. COO

james-murdoch_1472522c.jpg
It's always been the plan for one or a few of Rupert Murdoch's children to eventually take control of his vast News Corp. empire, the third largest media conglomerate in the world, which includes newspapers everywhere, 20th Century Fox, HarperCollins, Fox News, and so on. Today, Murdoch's younger son, James, moved toward that destiny as he was named chief operating officer of News Corp., after having run the internal businesses as CEO in Europe and Asia. But where does that leave Fox News big money man Roger Ailes? The kids have never much liked him, and today, he's probably pissed. The COO spot was previously held by Rupert's older son, Lachlan, but he left the company in September 2005, likely with a little push from Ailes. The family's beef with Ailes, chairman of the Fox Television Stations Group, is long-standing and will likely be exacerbated by James's move not only up the corporate ladder, but Stateside. More details and speculation inside Press Clips, our daily media column.

Senator Schumer Coaches Colleagues on Press Call; The Guardian To Expand Stateside

schumervest.jpg
Chuck Schumer, media adviser
On Tuesday morning, a telling little bit of the relationship between high-ranking politicians and the press was exposed when New York Senator Chuck Schumer was caught chatting prematurely on a conference call about the budget process with his fellow lawmakers. Schumer coached his people openly on talking points, unaware that reporters were already listening to the call giving us all a peek into the process of political negotiations played out in the media and just how predetermined it all is anyway. People can now pretend to be shocked, which people love to do! More on Sen. Schumer's snafu inside our daily media column Press Clips. Plus, a big acquisition for The Daily (sort of), news of the Guardian's American ideas and how the New York Times paywall could possibly cost $40 million.

Perfect Gay Couple Calls Digby Doll Son

Screen shot 2011-03-17 at 3.37.26 PM.png
"Guys and doll," in today's edition of the iPad newspaper The Daily, is so much better than the world's oldest dog and all of the other dog stories combined, because it tells the gripping human interest tale of Mark Kirby and A.J. Sapolnick, whose 20-year-old son is a doll named Digby. Both men have thin, neat mustaches and expensive taste and have taken their kid on exotic vacations, only ever paying airfare for two because the third wheel of their unique familial tricycle is made of plastic. Again, his name is Digby and he's 20-year-old.

Every Thing You Always Wanted to Know About the New York Times Paywall, But Were Too Poor to Ask

nyt.png
Big news in the world of meta media news today! Details of the long-awaited, vaguely teased New York Times paywall have arrived via a press release from the Paper of Record. It's sort of expensive, compared to free! It's also sort of reasonable, if you feel inclined to support the making of good news, but don't want all of the unread papers to pile up in your kitchen. (Some sections are boring.) We have all of the pertinent information inside an early afternoon edition of Press Clips, our daily media round-up. Plus! Plagiarism at the Washington Post and The Daily iPad newspaper is almost no longer free, but it is going overseas. But mostly the New York Times paywall -- always the New York Times paywall. (Don't be too afraid.)

NPR's Vivian Schiller Resigns After James O'Keefe Sting; New York Times Blames Rape Victim?

nprlogoo.jpg
Two distinctly icky stories dominate media news this Wednesday, with none bigger than the mess at National Public Radio following yesterday's release of a hidden camera video by the right-wing videographer and activist James O'Keefe. The public radio organization scrambled as a result of the (mostly feigned) outrage, turning a faux-scandal into a very real one by speeding up the resignation of outgoing fund-raising executive Ron Schiller, followed this morning by the pushing out of Chief Executive Vivian Schiller (no relation) by the board, thereby justifying the dishonest and otherwise shady actions of O'Keefe, an 'investigative journalist,' already celebrated on the right for bringing down ACORN with a similar scheme. Elsewhere, a heartbreaking New York Times article about a gang rape in a small Texas town is drawing more worthy outrage for its perceived blaming of an 11-year-old victim. More details on those stories, and two departures from The Daily, inside Press Clips, our daily media round-up.

Republican Secret Camera Scam Artist Fools NPR, But Also Muslim-Hating Bloggers

150px-James_O'Keefe_lightened_leaving_courthouse.jpg
James O'Keefe, the same Republican operative/twerp/'investigative journalist' behind such secret stings as the undercover ACORN videos (yeah, the pimp costume guy) and the attempted tapping of U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu's phones went at it again today with a new video project. This time, O'Keefe got NPR executive Ron Schiller to say disparaging things about the Tea Party and Republicans by pretending to be from a group of radical Muslims with money to donate. But O'Keefe's latest stunt, in turn, got Republicans to speak badly of Muslims. Everyone wins! (Loses?) More inside Press Clips, our daily media round-up.

Tiny Skateboarder Adorable, Gnarly

Via The Daily: seven-year-old Asher Bradshaw is a precociously talented skateboarder in L.A. who is totally the next Tony Hawk. Just look at him go! My favorite element of this is watching him interact with the older skaters at the skate park. His role models are these grizzled burnouts with holey Vans and ear gauges. Oh, to be young.
