For the Love of God, It's Not 'Downtown' Abbey!

Have you seen the extremely popular British period drama called "Downton Abbey"? It's all the rage right now. It won a Golden Globe! People are talking about it, watching it, DVR-ing it, weeping with joy and raising their glasses to it as we speak. And people and news organizations, which are bigger than people, are writing about it, and sometimes they're spelling it wrong. If you have, too, you are in good company. This is not to shame but in the interest of learning -- that wee "w" is tricky! Here are a few of the transgressors. Also, this is totally to shame.

Here Is the Inevitable 'Shit New Yorkers Say' Video

Just when we thought the meme was dead, Eliot and Ilana Glazer present "Shit New Yorkers Say." Among the gems:

"Where's the train?"
"They're filming Law and Order."
"You have to go to Brooklyn, it's the law."
"I hate L.A."

10 Best 'Pepper-Spraying Cop' PhotoShops

If you haven't seen the video of campus police officer Lt. John Pike pepper-spraying peaceful protesters at UC-Davis campus this weekend, we encourage you to watch--the satisfied expression on the campus police's face, amid audible student cries, is fairly harrowing. In addition to the video Runnin' Scared posted this weekend, there's another video here, shot from another angle, where in the first few seconds, you can actually see Pike brandishing the pepper-spray canister to the assembled crowd before he starts spraying, as if he's about to perform a magic trick. A still from the incident became the focus of a meme, as our resident OWS shoe-leather reporter Rosie Gray told you yesterday. And in the last 24 hours, the PhotoShop jokes over at peppersprayingcop.tumblr.com have gotten even funnier. See Pepper-Spray Cop get medieval on Super Grover's ass! Witness Pepper-Spray Cop handle a noisy Bush protester! Watch the Pepper-Spray Cop get some damn hippie Brits loitering in a crosswalk! Our 10 faves.

Over the weekend, peaceful student protesters at UC Davis were pepper-sprayed by a campus cop at point-blank range. Video of the incident went viral, prompting widespread outrage. UC Davis put their police chief on leave and people are calling for the resignation of the responsible cop, Lt. John Pike, and the school's chancellor Linda Katehi.

Now, just like everything else, the pepper-spray cop has become a meme.

Condé Nast Elevator Maybe Outed?

john jannuzzi.png
Game over. Multiple sources told The Daily Beast that the owner of the @CondeElevator Twitter is John Jannuzzi, a style editor at Lucky Magazine who also runs the popular Textbook tumblr. Jannuzzi hasn't admitted to anything, but he did tweet "This is fucking ridiculous" and "Frantic text message from Mom." He's right, it is ridiculous -- that this is even a big deal, that is. Outing him was maybe not cool of TDB, especially if our source was right that "there is so much backlash on this thing that anyone slightly connected seems fearful of their job." Also a bit ridiculous: that Condé Nast would be such a dictatorial place that you can't even have a lighthearted anonymous Twitter account without fear of retribution. No more eavesdroppy fun in the Condé Nast elevator, forever. Now the big question is: how iron-fisted will Condé's response be?

[The headline of this post has been changed because we're hearing that The Daily Beast might be wrong. Will update if we hear more.]

Condé Nast Elevator, We Hardly Knew Ye

ANNA Wintour.jpg
Almost as soon as it arrived, the snarky @CondeElevator Twitter account has made its exit. The account, which was allegedly composed of real quotes from inside the elevators at Condé Nast, went dark today with a contrite tweet from whoever's been controlling it:
