Rep. Michael Grimm, the congressman who represents New York's 11th District, is having a terrible year, much of which he can blame squarely on Michael Grimm. He kicked 2014 off with a bang, threatening in January to throw NY1 reporter Michael Scotto off a balcony after Scotto had the temerity to ask about those alleged campaign finance violations for which Grimm is under investigation by the FBI.

In case you've forgotten that particular golden moment in Congressional good decision-making, Scotto tried to ask Grimm about the allegations after the State of the Union address. Grimm refused to discuss them. Scotto turned back to the camera and told the NY1 viewing public that Grimm had refused to discuss them. And then, with surprising agility, Grimm bounded back into the frame, put his face and body very close to Scotto, and announced: "Let me be clear to you, you ever do that to me again I'll throw you off this fucking balcony." After a bit of discussion with the clearly shocked reporter, he added, "No, no, you're not man enough, you're not man enough. I'll break you in half. Like a boy."More »
Representative Michael Grimm surrendered to the FBI on Monday morning on 20 -- count 'em! -- federal charges, including "five counts of mail fraud, five counts of wire fraud, three counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false federal tax returns, one count of conspiring to defraud the United States, one count of impeding the Internal Revenue Service, one count of health care fraud, one count of engaging in a pattern or practice of hiring and continuing to employ unauthorized aliens, two counts of perjury and one count of obstructing an official proceeding." Oh thank God, something interesting happened during the State of the Union. We'd thought the highlight of the evening might be watching House Speaker John Boehner stubbornly refusing to crack a smile, glowering over the president's shoulder, while next to him, Joe Biden beamed maniacally and methodically seduced the ladies of the audience with his focused pointing.

But no: The real fun came afterward, when New York 1 Capitol reporter Michael Scotto tried to grab a minute with Congressman Michael Grimm, dignified representative of Staten Island and Brooklyn under investigation by both the feds and the House Ethics Committee for alleged campaign finance violations. Scotto wanted to talk about those allegations; Grimm had other, more athletic ideas.More »
Staten Island Republicans opened their brand-new headquarters this weekend, and local leaders took the opportunity to defend Congressman Michael Grimm. The rep was recently accused of raising illegal funds by an article in The New York Times. Grimm gave a speech about his dog Sebastian, which brings back memories of Richard Nixon's "Checkers" speech. "He sneaks around the couch in my office, and he goes behind the desk where the staff can't see him, and he leaps with his fangs out and tries to bite the mailman right on the butt ... I tell my staff, 'It's OK, Sebastian thought he was delivering The New York Times!'" And the crowd went wild.
