Ron Darling On Turning 50: Please, No Party

RonDarling1.jpg
When Ron Darling made his first start for the New York Mets on September 6, 1983 (a well-pitched 2-0 loss to the Phillies), he became the first Yale University alum in 23 years to reach the major leagues. His 13-year tenure also included stints in Montreal and Oakland, a Gold Glove Award in 1989 and, of course, a World Series ring from the Mets' last championship in 1986. In 2006 Darling returned to the Mets as part of the Gary (Cohen), Keith (Hernandez) & Ron television broadcast team and won a "Best Sports Analyst" Emmy. Darling will be on the air for all three games of this weekend's Subway Series and on August 19th, 15 years to the day of his release from the major leagues, he will celebrate his 50th birthday. As part of an ongoing book project, Voice contributor Rob Trucks has been interviewing 49-year-olds as they near their half-century birthdays, asking them to reflect on the milestone. What follows are Darling's thoughts on reaching 50...

New York's next hot tourist destination will have 87 acres of green space, a view of the Manhattan skyline, and a moat.

Governor Paterson announced today that the state is turning over control of development on a 150-acre patch of Governors Island to the Governors Island Operating Entity, which will have 9 seats controlled by the mayor, and one of which has to go to someone from Brooklyn. The rest of the board will be chosen by the 64th District state assembly member (Shelly Silver), the 25th District state senator (Daniel Squadron), Manhattan Community Board 1 (in Silver's district), and the governor. Silver, Squadron and Bloomberg shared the announcement. The city has committed $41.5 million from its capital budget for infrastructure investment and renovations of the Island's historic district.

Barack Obama is Golden, Rush Limbaugh is Screwed -- Predictions for the Year of the Tiger!

By Fatimah Surjani Ortega

Yes, Tiger, this could be your year
Sunday ushers in the Year of Metal Tiger, which sounds like a golf club. That's actually appropriate, because things look auspicious for Tiger Woods -- as long as he can keep his dick in his pants.

Just in time for Chinese New Year, the Voice offers up this celebrity-centered translation of what's in store for all you furry animals. We're basing it on the teachings of none other than the Feng Shui Grand Master himself, Singapore-born Tan Khoon Yong.

Let's start at the beginning, with those of you born in the Year of the Rat (1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008): Your advice for 2010? Pray hard, and pray often.

Crazy Yankee Chick: "WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!"

ws champs.png
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEW YORK YANKEES FOR WINNING THEIR 27th WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!

I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.

Well, I'm finally just getting out of bed, after celebrating the World Series Championship of the New York Yankees up until about 7am. None of us wanted the night to end.

Ball game over. World Series over. Baseball season over. Listening to asinine hating anti-fans drop the "who's won more in this century" over. Having to hear people say they "can't wait til the Yankees choke" over.

First year at new stadium over.

Nine years without a ring over.

Ball game over.

The Yankees win. The Yankees win!

Art D'Lugoff, Village Royalty, Gone Too Soon at 85

dlugoff.jpg
Here's to Art D'Lugoff, the great Village music impresario, the round and bearded political and artistic enthusiast, whose eclectic tastes educated more than one generation, and who died yesterday at 85. Much too young.

A friend, Thomas Vitullo-Martin, said D'Lugoff had been in good health, but under stress from dealing with ailments of his wife, the photographer Avital Achai. "He was just very stressed about that, but he was active right up until the end."

Few people were more active than Arthur Joshua D'Lugoff. In 1958, he opened a jazz and cocktail spot at the corner of Bleecker and Thompson streets. There had once been a gate where the door was, so he called it "The Village Gate," which is exactly what it quickly became. It was the place where jazz musicians came to be noticed, from Thelonius Monk, to Nina Simone, to Bill Evans, to John Coltrane, to Herbie Mann, all of whom proudly recorded albums there. "Live at the Village Gate" on an LP record jacket became a hallmark of musical distinction.

In 1957, the year before he opened his night club, he brought Billie Holiday, who wasn't allowed to perform in local clubs because of her past record, to New York to sing at the old Loew's Sheridan on 7th Avenue and 12th Street on a bill with Dave Brubeck. He later launched a battle to end the requirement that musicians had to have cabaret cards allowing them to perform, a fight he later won after convincing a friend, Mayor John Lindsay, that they got in the way of great music.

Crazy Yankee Chick: This ends tonight.

destinyny.png
November 4, 2009.

11/4.

Andy Pettitte is pitching in his 11th postseason with the Yankees. If he wins it, it'll be his 4th of the year.

Pedro Martinez is pitching his 11th postseason game. If he loses, it'll be his 4th against the Yankees.

If the Yankees win tonight, their postseason record is 11-4.

And it will be their 114th win of 2009.

The only people who should be worried right now are Phillies fans.
