McCarren Park Has a Poop Problem

What with the recent art gallery "poop mystery" and now the latest problem in McCarren Park, things seem to have taken something of a scatalogical turn in these late-summer days in New York City. The Brooklyn Paper reports that nannies and parents taking their kids to McCarren Park to play are tired of drunks using the playground "as their own personal toilet." Seems a fair thing to be tired of, especially given the existence of restrooms -- however imperfect they may be -- in the park.

Are 'Hipstras' the Next Generation of Hipsters? MTV Is Looking for Them in Greenpoint

Miss Heather at NewYorkShitty spotted this poster seeking "Hipstras" in front of T & N Wine & Liquor in Greenpoint yesterday. It may mark a new high in obnoxious terminology. You see, MTV is looking for people, who, given the illustrations lining the borders of the flier, are pretty much "hipsters" in the traditional or stereotypical sense (trucker cap, Jagger haircut, old-school sneakers, ironic 'stache, black-framed glasses, PBR [yawn]), but for some reason MTV is calling them "hipstras" for a show titled I Just Want My Pants Back. MTV is calling them this to indicate that said hipsters/hipstras get paid! Hipstra = Hipster paid to work in reality TV as an extra = Pretty much right back where we started. Go forth and conquer, Hipstra Nation. We'll be sitting here thinking "Lenny Dykstra" for no reason at all. [NewYorkShitty]

Debrahlee Lorenzana Story Goes Global, Viral, Crazy

alg_cbs_debrahlee_lorenzana.jpg
CBS
Ex Citibanker Debrahlee Lorenzana has been all over the national and local news, starting with last week's issue of the Voice and, most recently, hitting the TV morning show circuit, including appearances on Today and Good Morning America this morning -- despite her current employer JPMorgan Chase telling her to stop speaking to the press or risk being fired. But Debrahlee's range, versatility, and pencil skirts are not confined to the U.S.A. No way, no how.

G-Train Riders Kinda Hating Life Right Now

gtrain.jpg
Oh, the G-train. If you talk to your typical rider, G stands for any number of things before it implies actually Getting you anywhere -- Grumpiness, aGgression, and Goddamn. is it not running this weekend, again?

Pity the poor G-trainer because there's more where that came from. Per amNewYork, in addition to service cuts that will mean ending the line at Court Square in Long Island City (beginning June 27), now the G will stop running the full length of the line on April 19 (this coming Monday) due to track work, resulting in longer commutes for 201,000 evening and weekend riders.

Five-Minute New York Stories at Word Bookstore: Getting Punched at Starbucks, Defending Yourself from a Mugger With a Spork, and More

wordwindow.jpg
Word's exterior
It's 7:30 yesterday and there are about 30 people packed in the windowless concrete basement of Word Bookstore in Greenpoint, one of the most well-loved independent booksellers in Brooklyn. They're all here to share a personal story about their most magical, comedic, essentially New York moment in under five minutes--or alternately, to gawk at those who've got the cajones to do so--for an event called, fittingly, "The Five-Minute Series: I Love New York."
