Mike Bloomberg Thinks New Yorkers Might Riot Over Lack of Jobs

​Remember, ever so long ago, in a completely different season, when a hurricane was possibly bearing down on New York City and New Yorkers were quivering in the bodega lines? Mayor Bloomberg bravely addressed the crowds, and reporters asked, Will there be looting? His answer: "This is New York. We don't have that sort of thing." However, riots, apparently, are things that today's New Yorkers are capable of -- and they could happen if Washington doesn't start making some jobs happen!

​Riots raged overnight in the Tottenham area of London as protesters stormed the streets and burned buses, police cars and buildings. A crowd of 120 marched on the Tottenham police station in response to the shooting of Mark Duggan, a man who died in an alleged gunfight with officers. As of this morning, "26 police officers were injured in the unrest and 42 people were arrested for offences including violent disorder, burglary and theft following overnight clashes." [Telegraph]

Tonight Marks the 23rd Anniversary of the Tompkins Square Park Riot

​On August 6, 1988, police clashed with protesters in Tompkins Square Park in a riot that lasted early into the next morning. People had gathered in Tompkins to protest the city's proposed 1 a.m. curfew, which Mayor Koch said would clean up the "cesspool" of a park. The clash turned violent, and police were widely blamed for their role. The Times reported it as a "police riot," and a report compiled by the commissioner and department officials reiterated claims that it was an unorganized and confusing mess.

Soccer Fans Say NYPD Used Excessive Force After Uruguay Win

​After Uruguay defeated Paraguay in the finals of the Copa America on Sunday, ecstatic fans flooded the streets of Jackson Heights. Minutes later, dozens of police officers arrived at 37th Avenue and 84th Street and began pushing back the crowd. This led to scuffles between the soccer fans and the police. Residents felt that the police response was unjust; "I couldn't call 911. They were the same people abusing us," said Silvana Sislian, 46, manager of La Gran Uruguaya Bakery, to the Daily News.
