Cops say that Stephen Bolt, of 1690 E. 174th Street, The Bronx, killed Dawn Monaco -- his live-in girlfriend -- and arrested him today on murder charges, according to a New York Police Department statement.

Saturday's Body Count: 1 Stabbed, 1 Shot (So Far)


Saturday's murder count began just one hour and 44 minutes into the day, with the stabbing death of Elmer Augusto Lopez, 24, at 238 Knickerbocker Avenue in Brooklyn, pictured above.

The NYPD's bulletin on the incident indicates just one stab wound to the torso, and no arrest has been made. Know Elmer? Let us know something about him in the comments.

At Least 48 People Were Shot Over the Weekend in New York City

This weekend marked a disturbing surge in gun violence, in which at least 48 people were shot in the city. Most recently, last night, two cops were wounded in a gunfight in Crown Heights, and three people were killed -- one of them a 56-year-old woman named Denise Gay, who was hit in the head by a stray bullet while sitting on a nearby stoop with her adult daughter.

Mark Geisenheyner, Who Shot and Killed a 2-Year-Old, Killed by SWAT Team

There's more news in the brutal murder of East Village man Joseph Shay, 43, and 2-year-old Gregory Bosco Erdmann, which occurred over the weekend at the Shay's Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania, country house. The Shay family, including Paul, his wife, Monica, and his nephew Joseph, who all live in the East Village, had been staying there over the weekend along with Joseph's girlfriend, Kathryn Erdmann, who is Gregory's mother. It was there that Mark Geisenheyner, 51, a career criminal who had been plotting revenge against Paul Shay over an alleged insurance-fraud scam in 2006, opened fire on Saturday night, shooting all of them in the head and killing Joseph and Gregory.

Plane Crash in Russia Kills 44; Fatal Shooting on Lower East Side; Today Is the Longest Day of the Year

• A passenger jet carrying 52 people crashed in Russia last night, killing 44 perople on board. The plane was a RusAir Tupolev-134; it crashed into a highway near Besovets airport in northern Russian in thick fog. Experts are blaming the spate of recent air disasters in Russia on "aging jets, poor pilot training and lax government oversight." [NYT]

• There was a fatal shooting at 85 Pitt Street, between Rivington and Stanton, on the Lower East Side last night. The NYPD says that Jonathan Alston, a 23-year old man from Brooklyn, was shot in the head and killed around 12:30 a.m. [The Lo-Down]

Larisa Prikhodko, 26, and Her Mother, Tatyana, Fatally Stabbed in Brooklyn

As New York legislators advocate for a domestic violence registry, there comes news of another brutal murder in the city, with the boyfriend of one of the victims being sought by police as a "person of interest." Larisa Prikhodko, 28, and her mother, Tatyana Prikhodko, 56, were found fatally stabbed in their apartment in Sheepshead Bay this morning. Larisa was a nurse who worked at Mount Sinai and the mother of a three-year-old son; her mother, Tatyana, was a nurse at Brookdale Hospital. The two both worked in maternity units, reports the New York Post.

It's official: the Daily News says Suffolk County cops are pretty sure the speculated Long Island serial killer really is a serial killer. Better (worse?) yet, he's a Craigslist serial killer. Police say they've finally identified the bodies they found along Long Island's Oak Beach last month, and each was a missing prostitute who advertised on Craigslist.More »

Nick Brooks, Accused SoHo Strangler, Doesn't Really Get That "Right to Remain Silent" Thing

Nick Brooks, the 24-year-old accused of strangling his swimsuit designer girlfriend and leaving her body in a SoHo House bathtub, is afraid of going to jail. And can't shut up about it. "Suitcase Murder" Suspect Claims Self-Defense After Strangling Victim With Electrical Cord

On Monday night Hassan Malik, 55, was charged with the strangling death of 28-year-old Betty Williams, who worked as a prostitute and whose body was found by an unlucky passerby after it was stuffed into a suitcase and left on a Harlem Street. Malik is claiming that the murder was self-defense.

"Suitcase Murder" Suspect Arrested: Stuffed Woman's Body in Luggage After Strangling Her

Police say they arrested and charged a 55-year-old Brooklyn man last night, whom they suspect strangled a Bronx woman and stuffed her body into a suitcase.

CNN says 55-year-old Hassan Malik was charged with murder in the second degree late last night. The NYPD had previously released video of a suspect transporting the suitcase, which was found on 114th Street in East Harlem.
