The District Attorney's office has announced a guilty verdict in the trial of Jonathan Gonzales-Alvarez, who fatally stabbed a security guard in October 2009.

The crime occurred in a bar called La Casa del Mofongo in Washington Heights. The bar was hosting a karaoke and dance contest, and Gonzales-Alvarez became angry in part because there were men dancing on the stage in addition to women. After becoming rowdy Gonzales-Alvarez was asked to quiet down, and in response, he pulled out a switchblade and stabbed the bar's security guard, Arsene Epouta, multiple times.

Thumbnail image for pencil800.jpg
Updated: Woman on the train blogs about witnessing the incident, after the jump.

Update 2: The pencil was a pen, and the stabber (the Post calls him "deranged stoner Cordero Coroberto, 35") had been attempting to light no innocent tobaccey cigarette but "a blunt"! (That's marijuana cigarette to you. Happy 4/20. Don't do that.) Via the Daily News, he said, ""I was just trying to light my blunt and the b---- wouldn't leave me alone, so I hit her." Buzz. Kill.

Violent Robbers in the Bronx — New Ones

Cops are asking for help in finding the jerks responsible for a couple of violent robberies this week in the Bronx, one in the north and the other in Morrisania.

On Monday, at about 5:50 p.m., a 74-year-old man was hit from behind by a scumbag at the corner of Park Avenue and Gouverneur Place in Morrisania. The robber repeatedly kicked him and took his cell phone and cash. Cops don't even know what he looks like, so they need some tips. More >>

Tajeme Sylvester, 31, Shot Dead in Brooklyn

crimebeat-logo.jpg
At about 5:45 p.m. Monday, Brooklyn South cops responding to a "male shot" at 60 Summit Street in Red Hook found 31-year-old Tajeme Sylvester shot in the head and body. He was dead at the scene. Cops listed Sylvester's address as Sackett Road in Rock Hill, which is up in the Catskills.

But a Facebook page exists for a Brooklyn guy who has the same name -- and a very full and interesting life with hundreds of friends and family.  A comment posted on that page today indicates that, unfortunately, it may be the same guy. Cops say the investigation of the death is ongoing.

In an unrelated homicide earlier Monday, Brooklyn cops found a stabbing victim in Apartment 3G of an Institute for Community Living building at 150 East 18th Street, south of Prospect Park. The victim, Isaiah Nunez, 34, who lived in that apartment, was DOA when cops found him around noon. No arrests yet.
