Unless you've been living in a box, you're aware that the Oscars are tonight. While we won't be live-blogging the event like we did last year [Update: If you were reading Runnin' Scared this evening, you were probably aware that we were mistaken and we did have live coverage], we do have some hopes and anticipations for tonight's ceremony. So get in your gown (you do have one, don't you?), sit down in front of your laptop and read on as we prepare you for your viewing experience, or the experience you will have tomorrow when you try to catch up via blogs and YouTube.

New York is Nothing But Green Screen

The above video demonstrating visual effects in movies and television proves what we've all secretly known for years: New York City doesn't exist. Times Square, the Hudson River, and the UN building are just post-production illusions. Instead, we live in a world made up of nothing but green walls.

Mel Gibson's Judah Maccabee Movie: High on Action, Low on Circumcisions

Thumbnail image for Mel-Gibson-inside.jpg
The news that Mel Gibson is planning to make a Judah Maccabee biopic has caused quite a stir. While Judah Maccabee is one of the greatest heroes in the history of Judaism for leading the revolt against the Seleucid Empire, Mel Gibson loves getting drunk and ranting about how "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Why would Mel Gibson want to make a movie about a beloved Jew? The Atlantic's Jeffery Goldberg had heard about Gibson's interest in the story of Maccabee a couple years ago and asked him. Turns out, he thinks it would make one hell of an action movie.

Arrested Development Full-Length Film to Be Released Next Year?

Arrested Development.png
When Arrested Development went off the air in 2006, its devoted fan base was crushed, but in the finale of the third season, there was a glimmer of hope. In the final scene of the last episode, Maebe Fünke pitches Ron Howard a TV show about the Bluth Family, and he replies, "I don't see it as a series... maybe a movie." Since that teaser, there have been many announcements and many setbacks regarding the film. On July 11, during an episode of WTF with Marc Maron, Will Arnett, who played Gob Bluth in the series, claimed that the film was in the works and that it should be in theaters next year.

3D Porn Gettin' China All Worked Up

3dmovies.jpg
With all the talk about China being an emerging superpower and formidable economic player, we often forget that they still have to catch up with the good ol' US of A on some fronts. Namely, being cool about porn. The Independent reports that Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, a multi-million dollar 3D porn feature, has been banned in mainland China, and tour groups are making voyages to Hong Kong and Taiwan to see the flick. Producer Stephen Shiu Jr. boasts, "It will leave audiences feeling like they are sitting right there at the edge of the bed." Sorry, mainland China, but there's a sock on the doorknob.

Buried Parenthetical of the Day: New York Times Edition

his_girl_friday_phone.jpg
"(Another documentary with a Big Media focus is 'Page One: A Year Inside The New York Times,' directed by Andrew Rossi.)" - Brooks Barnes writing for the New York Times Carpetbagger blog about what will very easily be one of the more amusing (or: a-snoozing?) documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival this year. For the record, Rossi -- a Yale graduate -- has now directed documentaries about Al Jazeera and about the New York Times. Surely, that'll help with any East Coast Liberal Elite perception problems the paper may have. [FK]
