Ghetto Hikes: A Hoax? (UPDATE)

ghettohikes.jpg
UPDATE: Looks like Ghetto Hikes is a parody account -- and an unfunny one at that. According to a just-released tweet, Men's Humor and Ghetto Hikes were registered by the same person. Runnin' Scared will try and figure out the deal.

Meet Mr. Cody, author of Ghetto Hikes, a tumblr/Twitter meme in the making.

"I HAVE A FULL TIME JOB LEADING URBAN KIDS (OF ALL RACES) ON NATURE HIKES. I SIMPLY WRITE DOWN SHIT THEY SAY," writes Mr. Cody -- who gives no other identifying info.

Some of the kids' observations?

Obama's 2012 Campaign Starts Tumblr, Addresses Trolls

There are still 376 days before voters hit the polls to decide the next president, but the Obama 2012 campaign has already launched their Tumblr account. It went up today, and they call it a "huge collaborative storytelling effort" in the inaugural post. The Obama campaign used Facebook and other digital platforms to their advantage in 2008, and they are utilizing any technological tools that have come to prominence since then for the reelection campaign. In related news, Michele Bachmann just bedazzled her Gateway 2000 laptop.

The Coverage Of This Tumblr Fashion Brouhaha Is Kind Of Irresponsible

david karp uniqlo.png
Tumblr CEO David Karp's contentious visage.
NYC-based blogging platform Tumblr is having some problems, namely with people from the fashion industry who are fed up with certain aspects of its service. BetaBeat ran this headline today: "The Flood Gates Are Now Open On Publicly Bashing Tumblr," after yesterday announcing that "The Fashion Industry Wants Tumblr To Get Its Fucking Act Together" (oh my). NYmag's The Cut blog joins in in slightly more measured tones: "Fashion Brands Have Started to Air Grievances About Fashion-Hungry Tumblr."

Women Building Bridge Over Media Gender Gap; NY Times Quotes Anonymous Commenter

glass-ceiling.jpg
At the beginning of 2011, the writer and reader Anne Hays published a much-discussed open letter to The New Yorker, decrying the lack of female voices in recent issues and demanding a refund should the gender imbalance not at least move toward righting itself. In the weeks since, the women's literary group Vida published a report detailing "the truth of publishing disparities" across the media landscape at magazines and journals like The Atlantic, Harper's and the New York Review of Books. (In short: women are criminally unrepresented.) But the growing chorus of voices, especially online, hit a rather pleasant high note today when it comes to intelligent discussion on the matter, as writer and editor Megan Carpentier writes fairly on "the media glass ceiling," while another editor launches a new blog called Lady Journos, which "highlights the work of journalists who happen to be women." More positivity -- plus, how Britney Spears and homosexuals combined to confuse journalists (and much more!) -- inside Press Clips, our daily media round-up.

4chan vs. Tumblr: Why a Message Board Beefing With a Blogging Platform is Actually a Little Terrifying

i-m-in-ur-internet-cloging-ur-tubes.jpg
Things that nerds call news [dot] Tumblr [dot] com: the anarchic wing of the 4chan message board, known as /b/, is angry at the micro-blogging service Tumblr, which is known for book deals and as the weapon of choice for New York City media losers and wannabes. What often goes unsaid about Tumblr, because the same people who use it are the ones writing about it, is that it is populated by millions of teenagers who don't know what The Awl is. This is a crucial fact when it comes to online squabbles like the 4chan vs. Tumblr e-rumbles planned for Sunday evening and Monday.

New York Landmarks Continue Social Media Revolution: The New York Public Library, Empire State Building

Empire-lg.jpg
It seems like everyone is "joining" Twitter or "getting" a Tumblr these days. Especially in the case of certain New York City landmarks, who are taking to social networking like digitized screen-saver fish to a watery stream of information.

There Is a Gnome in New York City, and He Has a Tumblr. Of Course.

Recently we stumbled upon the Tumblr "Gnome Life," which tackles the trials and tribulations a millennial gnome faces after moving to New York City. Hilarious, right? A gnome in New York City? But after we laughed about gnomes, because gnomes are funny, and perused the many photos of the gnome doing things around the city (hailing cabs, shopping at Duane Reade -- also funny), we were plagued with questions.

Unhappy Hipsters Tumblr Likely for Book Deal and Laughs

uhtitle.jpg
Even after they built the concrete nature cell, it was impossible to entice him outdoors.

Unhappy Hipsters will probably be the next tumblr to accomplish the goal of most Tumblrs--a lucrative book deal. The site pulls pictures from various design publications like Dwell magazine and captions them with pretentious, airy writing that perfectly rivals the captions of any New York City underclassman Facebook albums.
