Does Anyone Care About Busta Rhymes?

Busta Rhymes mentally prepares to eat his own dreads

Busta Rhymes was on 106 & Park yesterday talking about his new video, the one where Gabrielle Union lip-syncs Kelis's parts and a lot of stuff blows up. The video is a parody of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a movie that wasn't even good in the first place, and it's terrible: sloppy, overproduced, incoherent. BET will probably play the hell out of it because they play the hell out of every video that obviously cost a lot to make, but it won't make the video any less terrible. On 106 & Park, Busta did a lot of talking about how he always comes with the videos. Once upon a time, that was true; plenty of people who commented on yesterday's post made sure to note that Busta made at least three classic videos ("Woo-Hah! (Got You All in Check)," "Put Your Hands Up Where My Eyes Could See," and "Dangerous"). But Busta's whole wacky-alien schtick got tired years ago, and we ended up with a lot of stuff like "Gimme Some More," a hyperactive pileup of primary colors and stupid costumes and showy editing, the most egregious example of forced zaniness in a video since Soundgarden forced "Black Hole Sun" on the world. And he's still corpse-fucking that persona years later, mugging like a fool whenever anyone's dumb enough to let him. When he's not too busy making funny faces, he's biting LL's god-awful "Headsprung" video in "Touch It" or giving Papoose camera time for that dumbshit New-York-in-my-hand bit in "Touch It (Remix)."

People keep sinking money into Busta Rhymes, and it's easy to see why: five platinum solo albums, crazy industry connections, a famously diligent work ethic, a complete willingness to make himself look like an ass on camera. From a certain perspective, he's a sure bet, and that's why he's supposedly going to drop a huge summer record on us in a few months, why Dr. Dre signed him to his label and recruited a laundry list of big producers to give him beats, why all those chumps wanted to be on the "Touch It" remix. But Busta is a waste of money. The Big Bang will probably go gold, possibly even platinum, just on the strength of "Touch It," which appears to be a bona fide monster hit even though it's butt. But it won't justify the massive overhead it's almost certainly already built up, and it might not even make enough to pay for that necklace Busta was wearing on 106 & Park, the one that had an appetizer-plate-sized map of New York made out of colored diamonds. I'm not really basing this on anything empirical, but I don't believe the record-buying public really gives a fuck about Busta Rhymes. This guy wore out his welcome years ago by jumping on damn near every remix he could find for longer than anyone actually wanted to hear him. He was like X-Pac in the WWF a couple of years ago, when he was wrestling every interesting new guy who came into the company (Rob Van Dam, Tajiri), trying to cement his own star status but really only dragging those guys down with him. Every time a hot song bubbled up from the underground, Busta would predictably jump on the remix and make it sort of suck: "Simon Says," "Ante Up," "Gimme the Light," "Never Scared," "Get Low," "Wait (The Whisper Song)," "Laffy Taffy." For all I know, he was on some "Gasolina" remix that I never heard. All the while, he never once bothered to switch up his circa-93 rah-rah flow, growling and fuming like Onyx was still the biggest thing in rap. He never learned wit or subtlety or swagger. Listening to Busta in 2006 is the same as it's always been; it's like getting your face blasted with hot saliva, and that kind of loses its novelty after a while.

This has nothing to do with the murder of Busta's assistant Israel Ramirez on the set of the "Touch It (Remix)" video. He's gotten a lot of flack from the local press for refusing to cooperate with authorities on their investigation, and it may or may not be justified. I don't know Busta or anyone else involved in the case personally, so I don't feel qualified to speculate on his motives, though I have to say that he sounded like an idiot on 106 & Park a couple of weeks after the shooting, talking about how he was trying to do something positive in bringing all these people together for the video, like that matters at all now that someone died in the process. Busta may or may not be a great guy, but he's totally run out of gas musically, and the three Big Bang songs that have made their way to the radio only drive the point home. "Touch It" is a naked grab at club-hit status, and it has succeeded, but I want to stab my radio every time I hear it; it's maddeningly repetitive and hopelessly shrill, and the whole "get low"/"now turn it up" gimmick ensures that no good rapping will come of it. "New York Shit," the local pride anthem, gets a ton of play at every NYC mix hut, but it doesn't have anything to say about the city beyond the two minutes Busta spends shouting out rap names, and plus it has more of that unbelievably obnoxious Swizz Beatz hypeman shit. Weirdly, "I Love My Chick," Busta's ill-advised collabo with the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am, may be the best song of the three, with a nice sidelong lope and a lyrical conceit that might actually pass for romantic in rap. Busta still sucks on it, though, and there's no reason to believe he won't suck on every song on The Big Bang. With Game's The Documentary, Dr. Dre proved that he could put take a completely uninteresting rapper and make a truly good album with him. But Game was a blank slate, an empty bark. When he was surrounded by better rappers and amazing beats, he sounded just fine. Busta isn't a blank slate. He's actively irritating, and there's only so much Dre could possibly do with that.

Man, for an ODB fan you sure came down hard on Busta for being wacky and not the most versatile MC. He definitely wore out his welcome a long time ago and I don't expect The Big Bang to be any good, but he's still a pretty talented guy and a couple of his 90s albums are really solid. And "Gimme Some More" is totally one of his best videos.

Also, I have no idea what you mean about the "Touch It" video biting the "Headsprung" video, other than I guess some of the lighting being a little similiar.

Fair points. Overstated as usual. I think there is merit to much of what you say, but I don't think that the songs are nearly as bad as you say they are. "Touch It" is trite, but its a good club record. "New York Shit" is trite also (and extra trite because its a Diamond D bite) but refreshing. But I do kinda love that a track with a Diamond D beat could be a current NY anthem. But that says a lot more about Diamond's staying power than Busta's. I'm surprised you didnt mention that "Gimme Some Head" joint with Shawnna. That I think is the most worthy of criticism because its so trying to be a hot Texas record. Of course, its a Shawnna song so that's not surprising. But with all Busta's yelling about NY and NY chains and such its a little surprising that he would pander so blatantly to the south. That said, I'm excited for the Busta record and I think the streets are too. Of course I don't really know this (neither do you though) because I don't spend a lot of time on "the streets" (but who in this business does, really?). I get the sense though that Busta is hot. Of course, that's probably all bought and paid for so it probably doesn't mean anything. Enough rambling for now. Good piece--just a bit extreme.

Wtf, how is "Gimme Some Head" a Texas record?! How is Shawnna trying to bite Texas? She's from chicago and she's on an atlanta label, and its a Too $hort sample, shit is not in any way a Texas track.

I haven't heard a Busta album since E.L.E. (I haven't bought one since his 1st solo), so I haven't been a fan for some time. But this is just plain wrong:

"All the while, he never once bothered to switch up his circa-93 rah-rah flow, growling and fuming like Onyx was still the biggest thing in rap."

The fact that he did switch up his flow is the primary reason his music sucks now. He was never the greatest lyricist, but he used to be unpredictable, changing his vocal tone and speed. Ever since Dangerous, he's been on the same monotonous, simple back and forth. What's the point of listening to a boring Busta Rhymes?

Let's define a clown for purposes of this discussion. A clown is a rapper who creates wacky videos and catchy tunes that expire after three months (really, can anyone listen to "Touch It" anymore?). Busta Rhymes became a professional clown somewhere around "Gimme Some More". However, other clowns like Missy Elliott and Ludacris manage to *sell records* and *earn money* by controlling their publishing and discovering "proteges" that generate revenue and keep your name in the streets. This hasn't happened w/Rah Digga, Papoose, or Rampage, so Busta has to wipe off the clown makeup (dreads) and switch up the flow to keep up with the kids. Get low, buss.

I'm trying to think of other clowns. Coolio? Black Eyed Peas? D4L (too soon?)I can't bring myself to call LL a clown yet.

"I'm not really basing this on anything empirical" So what are you basing this on? Damn, you sound like you have it our for him...did he fuck your girlfriend or something?

How about the next article gets called "Does Anyone Care About Tom Breihan?"

Wow,

I've been reading your articles for a second now and never commented, but I was compelled to reply on this one. Not because Busta Rhymes isn't a figure worthy of major critique, but because once again your smarmy writing style takes center stage over any real valid comments about him as an artist or as a public figure.

I can't be mad at you for using your soapbox, but I must say, in your ranting and just plain hating, you miss all the real issues that would justify shitting on Busta Rhymes. Take note of the following:

1. He has never put out a solid solo album, never, ever, ever. All of them were subpar efforts that yielded great singles with great visuals. Think of him as the male counterpart to Missy Elliot.

2. He willingly employs gansta rah rah gun talk, despite the fact that he's from Long Island and used to rap about Saabs.

3. His alleged homophobia is hysterical given that he was wearing some pretty gay ass shit for years and had the nerve to have a clothing line of his ill inspired couture.

4. His self reinvention came at the expense of an era of Hip Hop that launched his career and yet he can't find it in his heart to help any of the crew that got there. Real Pussy.

5. Last but not least, the real story in all of this is how the murder of his friend/bodyguard has really exposed the cupcake he is. The alleged shooter is clearly connected to someone in the G Unit camp (Yayo), who are under the same management/label/etc. as Busta, and he hasn't done shit to see someone brought to justice----street or otherwise.

How could he release an album and continue to work with the same circles that probably caused the death of his close associate. Not to mention his management, which has handled him for years and they aren't distancing themselves at all from these circles.

To sum it up, dude is a joke. His music is good for a couple good club songs, and he's great on appearances, but as for his recording career, it's only downhill from here.

p.s. You don't know as much about Hip Hop has you claim to and your snobby little white boy references are annoying to any real rap fan. I hope you either get hit by a bus or fall victim to the negative ass images you often celebrate in your punk ass blog.

Sorry Dilz. I'm surprised you were able to stop drooling about the opportunity to point out that I was "wrong" long enough to type your reply. I clearly don't know as much about hip hop as you do. But never did I say that Shawnna was from Texas and I know its a Too Short sample, and honestly, I don't know what label Shawnna is on. Nor do I care. I'm just talking about how the record sounds. Now maybe I'm not as nerd rap as you, but to me it sounds like a texasy record. And believe it or not, artists from other cities do sometimes try to sound like whats hot on the street at that moment whether its characteristic of where their from or not.....

Damn. Everybody got themselves all riled up about Tom's criticism of Busta, but nobody's willing to defend him, which pretty much proves Tom's point. Nobody gives a fuck about Bus, and for good reason. He's been stale as shit for years. But, somehow he's kept himself prominent, which is really fucking irritating when he's got nothing new to say... Good piece, Tom. Let's see more of this shit, less stuff about fake pirate bands.

Here's my thing with Busta Rhymes -- he was once an above average rapper with personality to burn, but he's been pretty stagnant of late. I've never listened to an entire album by him, and based on reviews and the comments here, he's never really released a "classic" album.

He's always been more of a singles artist, which is why his best of album (which I own) is such a great listen. Great track after great track, all on one disc. I know a lot of ya'll aren't feeling "Touch It," but I enjoy it -- shit sounds great blaring out of my car (and as Bside said--great club record). I think the remix with Mary J. Blige, Rah Digga and Missy Elliot is sweet too.

Oh well. At least he gave a solid performance in "Finding Forrester."

let's not kid ourselves here. the best thing busta ever did was his verse on "scenario." you can't discount leaders of the new school either.

Posted by: Jewtang at May 15, 2006 3:42 PM

in fairness, busta did switch his style up. hes been rhyming softer for a long time and trying to sound sexy instead of a 'dungeon dragon'. hes basically been trying to latch on to every new trend that comes along for years.

Dude has had a great run.Why not celebrate that and the fact he can still make a banger 6 records in(8 if u count LONS) . I found the guy, signed him in LONS and think he's one of the best of all time. His problem is he is omnipresent therefore were all a little Busta'd out. Too many sprite add's,semi movie roles and to many good not great records. I wish him the best but after this many records, that many semi movies and a whole bunch of remix hoping he just doesnt seem as great as he is sometimes. The word is overexposed.Chill though people I heard the record it's pretty good yall and I ain't just saying that cause............Hey why ain't Kelis in the video I wonder?

P.S Will anyone ever just say Kelis can't really sing already? She is the most overated thing on two legs and those legs do look good!

Sometimes we agree; sometimes we disagree! Busta is pretty overrated.

Tom, you're a fuckin' hater!!!

Posted by: Garrrison Jester at November 27, 2008 12:53 PM

Bust killed in it on NY Shit. LONS is part of what made rap what it is. Give respect.

He is far more gifted off the time of the head then this edited writer, my fault blogger "Tom" will ever be. + live he is so filled with energy he can battle anyone.

Stop hating you'll live longer.

OMG! You guys are so super gay. I hope you all get totally tickled up your asses. Busta is a sweetheart, and I love his super slickidy-slack beats. Live long and dunce 'em all Busta!
