Pitbull: Better Than Nas

I should probably stop using this picture, huh?

When virtually every circa-2006 street-rapper does club-rap, it sounds like a chore, like the sort of self-consciously pandering garbage that might help him move a couple more units even as it dilutes the hardness of his coke-talk. When Pitbull does club-rap, it sounds like there's nothing in the world he'd rather be doing. He's got this rapid patter that always threatens to run off the rails completely and spin off into pure nonverbal expression. On damn near every verse, he gets progressively fired-up and then suddenly switches over from English to Spanish, like English is just structurally unable to transmit the freakiness he wants to get through to you. A few of his songs don't even have verses or choruses in the traditional sense; they just spin between rhymes and chants and instrumental bits, figuring out their own logical progression. Take "Jealoso," probably the best Neptunes track since the "Drop It Like It's Hot" remix. It starts out with Pitbull rapping calmly over pinging congas and accordion farts, honoring the time-tested Southern rap tradition of telling girls to dance, muttering a hook about how you should make them girls jealosa and them boys jealoso. At the beginning of the second verse, he does his trademark scream ("Wheeee-yoo!") but keeps everything contained, like he's really doing his best to make a regular rap song. But then this wobbly bassline comes in and he just says fuck it and abandons the structure completely, chanting little call-and-response riffs that are either Spanish or total gibberish, and the song really finds its liftoff. That's the thing about Pitbull: he doesn't need words (or English words anyway; I should learn some Spanish) to make music.

Pitbull gets identified with reggaeton a lot, but there's no reggaeton on El Mariel, his astoundingly great new album. He raps in Spanish and all, but he's no more reggaeton than he is dancehall or Miami bass. He's got a wide-open ear, and he'll rap over anything that might conceivably move an ass or two. Two years ago, he became the first prominent American rapper to embrace grime when he dropped a quick freestyle over Lethal Bizzle's "Forward (Pow)," still the single best track that the entire grime scene has ever produced. On El Mariel, Pitbull and his producers grab little bits and pieces of dancefloor alchemy from all over. "Fuego" is basically Debbie Deb's "When I Hear Music" with extra drums and lyrics about how you're not a gangsta. "Come See Me" is the millionth clone of DJ Toomp's beat for "What You Know" that Toomp has churned out this year, but it jacks the regal horns from Hector Lavoe's "La Murga de Panama" to class up its epic boom. "Que Tu Sanes D'Eso" actually interpolates "What You Know" without sounding anything like it. And "Hey You Girl" grabs the bassline from the B-52s' "Rock Lobster," of all things, so Pitbull can yell about partying. That last one especially sounds like a terrible idea, a tone-deaf and clueless cash-grab forged in the fires of crossover hell. But Pitbull makes it work, seizing on the joy in that propulsive snap and using it for his own purposes.

In this XXL blog, he writes about his love for Latin freestyle and Miami bass and his apprenticeship under Luther Campbell. And he admits that he's not doing the same thing as fellow Miami rappers Trick Daddy and Rick Ross: "I think out of all of us, I'm really the one that sticks to his roots the most, in terms of the music that we grew up off."

Pitbull talks about dealing coke, but he mostly just says that he's glad he doesn't have to do it anymore. He talks hard, but he never sounds the least bit interested in following through with his threats. For him, music is an escape, and not an escape in the Rick Ross money-porn sense. His music feels physical in ways that hardly any recent rap does. Rap these days is about abstraction, about mythical rags-to-riches stories, impossibly hard characters rising to the top of the world by staying hard, by never talking to police, by being smarter and tougher than the other guy. But Pitbull's music isn't about dominance; it's about sweaty, messy human interaction. He calls girls girls (or sometimes broads) instead of bitches, which is what passes for chivalry in rap. He doesn't hate everybody, and he doesn't talk about climbing up on the backs of others.

But there's conflict in there, too. Pitbull is a Miami Cuban, part of that scary but important voting bloc that gets all apoplectic whenever the American government does anything that could be considered a capitulation to Castro. The album is named after the mass 1980 boatlift from Cuba to Florida. Immediately after Castro turned over control of the Cuban government to his brother, Pitbull recorded the celebratory non-album track "Ya Se Acabo (It's Over)": "No more risking their life for freedom / I'm hoping he's dead cuz we don't need him." On the album cover, he wraps himself in the Cuban flag and stares forlornly across the ocean. Pitbull was born in 1981, immediately after the Mariel boatlift, and he's got an overcoming-adversity story that a lot of rappers would envy. But whenever he tries to get contemplative, he sounds weirdly lost: "I feel like Keanu Reeves in the movie Devil's Advocate / Confused but blessed with extravagance." It's like he can't wait to get back to dancing.

I meant to write this column last week, but CMJ got in the way. And it probably doesn't matter now because everyone forgets about rap albums after they've been out for a week if they even notice their existence at all. El Mariel came out last Tuesday and sold 50,000 albums in its first week, enough to top Billboard's Independent chart (he's on TVT) but not enough to crack the top ten of the actual list. The first single, "Bojangles," was pretty great, but it had a shitty low-budget video that only got Rap City play for about a week. It also had the Ying Yang Twins rapping on it, and nobody cares about them anymore. We're going to get a ton of big-news fourth-quarter rap albums over the next two months, and the world is probably going to forget about El Mariel if they haven't already. That's a shame. It's one of the best rap albums of the year.

comments

Do you write ridiculous comments like "Pitbull is better than Nas" to piss off people who actually know and love hip hop or do you write stupid comments because you don't know any better? Here I can make an ignorant comment: Rap music should only be performed in English. How ironic!

Posted by: DocZeus at November 10, 2006 2:04 AM

what do you expect from someone who deifies a Justin Timberlake album?

Posted by: punagement at November 10, 2006 12:13 PM

I thought I read somewhere that Pitbull is actually the son of one of the people involved with organizing the Mariel boatlift. Am I just making that up? If so, I think it's interesting that his story is one that was born out of adversity already overcome, rather than into adversity he himself had to overcome.

on the real... I don't mind hearing some of Pitbull's music when I'm tryna stuff some $1's into a stripper's thong, but as far as his politics... ven'te pa'fuera!

he is just a mouthpiece for the Estefans and CANF. He makes wildly erroneous claims like 'hip-hop isn't allowed in Cuba' and people treat him like some kind of expert. If he didn't adhere to the gusano myth of pure, magical pre-Castro Cuba, he'd never have an artist deal, let alone an executive postion at Bad Boy Latino, which is run by Emilio Estefan.

Posted by: dutchtwista at November 10, 2006 1:35 PM

Doc, he writes ridiculous comments because he's curious about "real hip-hop" and he's hoping that someone as knowledgeable and sharp witted as you will come along and tell him all about it.

I agree with lots of the comments here, and let me just add that Status is getting really lazy. Pitbull is obviously not better than NaS, just like he obviously did not make the best grime track to date. I used to really like this blog, but it seems like lately (the last 6 months) Status just substitutes hyperbole for doing his job. How many fawning posts have we read here supposedly telling us really early on about the best rap album of the year (Fishscale or Food and Liquor?). How many more do we need to read before we find a better blog?

Let me also add, that if you want ignorant it was Status' post in the summer demanding "better" and more serious beefs in rap music. Yeah, thats what the world and hiphop really need.

It is easy to reply with hateful and uneducated remarks, but the truth is that in the eyes of many, specially here in the South, Pitbull is consider the better artist!

What I don't understand is the apathy. Is it racist based, is it envy... I don't know. Pitbull has been respectful of his peers, and numerous time has given credit to local Miami artists that help his career and influence his style.

All I know is that Pitbull gets a better reaction on the dance floor than any Nas track ever out. The people are the judges and the meter I use to evaluate his performance, both live and on El Mariel.

Just take a look back at the roots of hip hop and rap music. Wasn't it Kool Herc one of the first? Isn't he from Jamaica, and didn't Jamaicans call this style of rapping "Toasting" much earlier than the the late 70s when hip hop began?

Hey, rap music was actually invented by African American that emulated this style influenced by Jamaican artists. One can't say that the style is as pure and authentic as many of us would like to believe.

So if the African Americans can borrow from the Jamaicans to create, why can't a Cuban rapper such as Pitbull continue to borrow, and creatively enhance to evolve? I've got nothing against hearing rapping or hip hop in Japanese, or Portuguese! As a matter of fact I welcome it!

We cannot be so closed minded.

I am amazed at some of the comments in this original blog... I refuse to believe that truly good pop music would be as volatile and forgeable as the writer wants us to believe.

Songs may be taken out of rotation for many political and financial reasons, but if they are great, they become classics!!!!!

The new generation of hipsters and taste makers may not get off to "Rappers Delight", but play it for a group of thirty something club hoppers and you will hear a loud scream followed by a rush to the dance floor! The same happens to a twenty something crowd when you play something from Easy E's album or Digital Underground to name just a couple of examples.

I'm certainly not worried if the Ying Yang twins aren't in anymore... if it sounds good and I dig it, I'll throw it down... "Bojangle" is still one of the hottest tracks I still play, I don't say that, my dancers do.

By the way, yes I did play Nas, and I play anything that is hot from any artists! It is very easy to review an album, criticize it, glorify it, etc. But the true essence, and the reaction to each production can only be measured by the actual experience of being a DJ in a club or a club goer... the streets Baby!

If you go to a live concert, you will only find people whom dig that artist's music there... but if you play in a club day in and day out every week, one can see the reaction to music by fans of many styles and many artist.

My point is this; If I see a Nas fan getting off to a Pitbull track more than he or she did to Nas' best track, then I have license to say... Pitbull is the better artist.

Keep in mind that Nas was a monster created by millions of dollars and a monster machine, and Pitbull's budget can't even begin to compare. One just truly reap what one invest, and one must make a huge investment to become a monster in the US and in the world in the music business.

That's my opinion, that's my perception.

"Doc, he writes ridiculous comments because he's curious about "real hip-hop" and he's hoping that someone as knowledgeable and sharp witted as you will come along and tell him all about it."

So is that a yes?

I think that if anyone feels that pit is better than nas well than they're entitled to their own opinion i personally feel that pit is BETTER than nas but you have to see it like this, we all see things in a different perspective, i feel that pit represents no only his family, or what he believes in he represents alot of us no matter if your cuban, latino, african american, white and thats what makes people feel the way they do about him, because his speaks it real and hes not out to speak just for himself. Not only that i think he is one of the few that is very respectful to others and you know where he got that from, his family.

Its haters that keep someone like pit going because you are what makes him strive to work harder at what he does and that is why he is so DAMN GOOD at it. So keep on hating, haters, pitbull is one of the best I mean come on if he wasn't he would'nt be where he's at. He knows how to keep his fans sitting on the edge of the seat waiting on him to release a new album or even speak a word.

I LOOOOVE HIM AND EVERITHING HE STANDS FOR!!!!!!

Guys! You can't be serious! The title seems to me a jokey if not purposely exagerrated statement. Status always comes with similar titles like (I'm gonna make this up) Petey Pablo: Best Rapper Ever?

You sound like a bunch of angry Nas stans.

Maybe part of what informed this title is that Pitbull is making music that Status is feeling right now, while Nas is recycling his old beats (Hip Hop Is Dead) or putting out wack songs (The N).

I don't know those are just some of my thoughts.

Just because a rapper is considered a legend doesn't mean they are infallible or can't be criticized, look at the mediocre crap that Lay-Z is putting out.

Posted by: Colin C. at November 11, 2006 3:52 AM

i'll go 'head and admit upfront that i'm a Nas stan, but i got pretty good reasons: the man is a genius. his crappiest album was Nastradamus, and he still got lines on some of those songs that will spin your head.

that said, status ain't right for the pitbull is better than nas crack not because it a retarded statement, but because he didn't justify it at all in the article. he didn't do a comparison, list pro's and con's, nothing. why take a position if your not going to defend it? is nas infallible? hell naw, what the fuck was he thinking on street's disciple? a good eight of those songs were unlistenable. this is a nas stan speaking.

as for pitbull, he got flows, i ain't mad at him, but he hasn't said anything compelling yet, nothing to make me say 'oh shit!' and hit rewind on my cd player. that might not be important to yall, but rappers need to make me have moments like that for me to consider them great. def not better than nas, and if you tryin to make that argument, i have to question your intelligence. maybe better party starter, i won't argue with that, but if that's all your worried about, i don't think you love this music hip hop like some of us others do.

Posted by: coqui at November 11, 2006 11:15 AM

I am appolled by some of the things said about pitbull I know its most of yall that dont know anything about the club music and bass music. You don't understand it thats why you all are hating on Mr. 305 PITBULL P.S. Pitbull's # 1 FAN

How Can you compare these to 2gether thats insane they come from two different sides of the track, world and aspects of life. My personal opinion is that they both are great rappers but for my personal taste pitbull wins over all and not nockin nas i grew up listening to his music. B U T SEE PITBULL WILL HAVE YOU ALL HIPE FOR THE NIGHT GO COP THAT CD AND BRING HIM TO DA TOP #1 LIKE HE IS>>>.......

Posted by: teianaburg33702 at November 12, 2006 1:48 PM

Colin C.'s got it right. The title's mostly just baiting dudes like DocZeus, who seems to read Status' shit a lot, but never really seems to get it. Doggin on Nas on the internet is like rippin on the war to a bunch of marines; everybody gets all bugged out and says the same shit they always say. You're guaranteed to get a bunch of rockheads accusing you of stupidity/treachery/blasphemy.

I haven't heard the Pitbull album, but if it's at all fresh or interesting, it's got a leg up on all the stuff that's leaked from Hip Hop Is Dead. I wanted Nas to be back as bad as anybody, but it just don't look like that's the case.
