This Year's Grammy Nominations: Fucking Insane

By Tom Breihan, Thursday, Dec. 6 2007 @ 7:10PM

grams.JPG
My brain hurts

I basically don't care about the Grammy awards. Or, rather, the part of my brain that I use to think rationally doesn't care about the Grammy awards. The Grammys don't really affect record sales for more than a couple of weeks, they don't reflect either popularity or critical acclaim, and they're clogged with so many meaningless awards that sometimes I can't even believe the people nominated give half a shit. (Would it bother Alan Alda, for example, if he lost Best Spoken Word Album to Maya Angelou?) The award ceremony itself is always long-winded and boring enough to be near-unwatchable even though I still watch it every year. The entire enterprise is basically one massive excuse for the record industry to pat itself on the back, and after the financially disastrous year it just had, that's not really something the business should be rushing to do. I know all this very well. And still every year, when the Grammy nominations are announced, I inevitably end up finding myself stunned. That nomination-day feeling isn't outrage, exactly; every music dork in the world has an ideal Grammy-nomination list in mind, and the actual nominations never look anything like those fantasy lists. It's more confusion. Are there really people out there who not only made it through Vince Gill's massive four-disc album These Days but who actually consider it to be the Album of the Year? Is Amy Winehouse really the cultural juggernaut this list makes her look like? How have I never even heard of one of the Best New Artist nominees? For one day every December, it's like I've stumbled into some alternate pop universe where everything is upside down and nothing makes sense. I'm not saying I necessarily know more about pop music than the industry insiders who pick the nominees; after all, I've never heard of Best New Artist nominee Ledisi, and they, evidently, have. But the logic behind so many of these choices just baffles me. This will be an interesting year for the Grammys, if only because it's entirely unclear what might happen.

The big news surrounding this year's list of nominees is Kanye West. He has eight nominations, more than any other artist, and he's up for a lot of the big awards. It's not particularly weird that Kanye is up for Album of the Year, the single most important award; it's not even his first time being nominated for it. But it is weird that he actually has a really good shot at winning the thing this year. Before this morning, I never would've considered Kanye a front-runner for that award. In most cases, the bitch-fit Kanye throws every year when he doesn't win Album of the Year would be enough to put off the notoriously middlebrow voters. Nobody likes it when Kanye acts like he's entitled to this stuff, and Grammy voters hate to do what everyone expects them to do; remember, if you will, that one year when Steely Dan beat out The Marshall Mathers LP. Still, if Kanye doesn't win, who will? It's pretty impressive that Vince Gill decided to release four CDs worth of music at once, but I can't imagine more than a handful of voters actually want to sit through the whole thing. Herbie Hancock's Joni Mitchell tribute could conceivably win thanks to the combined prestige of Hancock and Mitchell, but the whole thing is just too marginal and slight to merit consideration. I barely even noticed that the Foo Fighters released an album this year, and I'm just dumbfounded that it's even nominated; are these guys actually still considered important? It seems like Kanye's main competition is Amy Winehouse, who also got nominated for a ton of awards, but then Winehouse is a notorious goddam mess. On paper, she's exactly the sort of thing Grammy voters like. Just like past winners Lauryn Hill and Norah Jones, she's young and relatively fashionable while still being totally musically conservative, she's crossed over to a whole bunch of different audiences, and she validates the tastes of older voters by being totally slavishly devoted to the music of their youths. It doesn't even particularly matter that she only has two good songs on her album. But if she did win the thing, there'd be a pretty good chance she'd pull a Slash and just slur cusswords all over the place in her acceptance speech. Besides, by Kanye's warped standards, he's been pretty modest this year. He still has lingering goodwill for beating 50 Cent in the great 9/11 sales battle (and for actually selling records), and people feel bad for him because his mom just died. I feel absolutely ridiculous trying to make Grammy predictions because the voters, as a group, are demonstrably working from some sort of bizarre alien logic. But Kanye should really get to working on that acceptance speech. He should also thank Jesus that the Alicia Keys album came out too late to be eligible.

As insane as this list of nominations is, I should probably devote some space to acknowledging the things the Grammy voters did right. Four of the five nominees for Record of the Year range from pretty good to great, and even that Foo Fighters song is pretty inoffensive. It's sort of fun to see Feist's name so many times since it shows she's officially made the leap from Indie Norah Jones to Actual Norah Jones Competitor. I'm going to have a tough time deciding whether to root for Taylor Swift or Paramore for Best New Artist; they all seem like good kids, and they all have good songs. Daughtry got locked out of all the big categories. Timbaland's up for Producer of the Year. Justice and LCD Soundsystem are both up for Best Electronic/Dance Album, which proves that at least a few Grammy voters have their fingers somewhere near the pulse, even if those groups do have to compete with Tietso and something called Shiny Toy Guns. Slayer will probably win their second straight Best Metal Performance statuette. "I Get Money" got some love, as did "Int'l Players Anthem" (and it would be really great to see UGK get a Grammy now). Most of the big rap nominees are not outright embarrassments, which is nice. And I'm actually sort of excited to see this year's show, mostly because I really don't know who's going to win what. This is the first year in a while I can really say that.

I'm basically the same way with Tom, that I can't get worked up over who gets nominated or ultimately wins.

I also don't understand the eligibility criteria that makes Feist, who's on her third album and had her mid-major breakthrough in 2004, is nominated for Best New Artist.

For a couple of years, I'm thinking 2003-04, Grammys did have very watchable performances - I'm thinking the Joe Strummer tribute with Costello, Springsteen, Grohl, Van Zandt and Tony Kanal (!), the Beyonce/Prince duet, the Roots sneaking in a "Kings of Rock" riff in "Lose Yourself", and a surprisingly decent Bee Gees tribute by NSync.

Seriously, with all due respect, I saw Shiny Toy Guns this year. If you haven't heard of them, why not look them up? Write about the music, not about what you don't know about it. It would be more interesting and informative for us all.

I don't like The Grammys either, for the record :P

Why the HELL did Shiny Toy Guns get nominated? That HAD TO BE AN INDUSTRY INSIDE PAYOFF NOMINATION!!! They SUCK.... and I've heard that they stole their production technique and style for the final release of their CD, as well as some of the material for the CD from other artists AND SHINY TOY GUNS re-recorded that CD THREE TIMES... they couldn't get it right the first time. That band does not deserve a nomination!

I think you are the only person who never listened to all 4 cds of Vince Gill's "These Days" box set. 99% of the reviews of both the set and Vince's live "These Days" tour were positive. Unlike most artist who put out one cd with maybe 6 good songs in it, Vince puts out 4 cds of all NEW material with critics raving about all of the songs. Vince derserved to get this Grammy nomination and deserves to win.

And by the way, Vince is a respected musician not only in Nashville but in LA and NYC. Eric Clapton invited Vince to play at both of his guitar festivals. Vince was invited to be a band member of the Dire Straits (and turned it down) and he has spent 30 year not only as a well sought after sideman and harmony vocalist, but as a genuinely good human being. And he ain't a bad golfer either.

Get your hearing checked.

Someone told me the band is being sued.

The Academy was dupped by Universal Records and Shiny Toy Guns.

Either the Academy was dupped by the record label and THE BAND, or THE ACADEMY is clearly getting pay-offs (is in kahoots with Universal Records) The nomination for Shiny TOy Guns will have to be WITHDRAWN. According to the Academy RULES; Nominations and Awards are; For recordings released during the Eligibility Year: October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2007. Shiny Toy Guns had RELEASED the current version of their CD - WE ARE PILOTS 'ONLINE' FOR SALE independently prior to signing with Universal Records. Shiny Toy Guns had the current version of the CD We Are Pilots album released on the Internet for sale prior to signing with Universal Records in June 2006. Universal Records made sure that the release date for Shiny Toy Guns, We Are Pilots CD was on October 17, 2007 so that the ALREADY RELEASED CD which was then re-released under the Universal label would be eligible for the Grammys. And the rest is now history. SHAM, IT'S A SHAM. Shameful Sham! The music industry is completely CORRUPT. Shiny Toy Guns CD "We Are Pilots' is not eligible for a Grammy Nomination according to the Grammy Rules.

As much as "I heard" and "someone told me" is credible, let me ask you this:

Kanye has 8 nods, how much of the intellictual property in his songs are his own? He's never written his own hit. He does reprises. Why he nominated 8 times?

Some of you are picking on Shiny Toy Guns with little or no hardcore factual evidence or citations, so it confuses me.

I'm supposed to assume you're correct? I'm sorry, it's just not enough proof folks. Feel free to show me the proof through, you MAY be right. Who knows.

Here's idiocy for you. Four of the five 2001 nominees for Album of the Year were:

Beck - Midnite Vultures
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
Radiohead - Kid A
Paul Simon - You're The One

and who won? Steely Dan.

Now, nothing against Steely Dan. And to be fair, even a bunch of the big critics couldn't figure out "Kid A."

But it's Kid freaking A. And the Beck and Paul Simon are strong.

On the Shiny Toy Guns comments. I bought the digital download of that album in May 2006 :) also got the Universal release version (October 2007) and the tracks are THE SAME as the download I bought in May online for We Are Pilots V3. The only change on the version Universal put out was the CD cover/artwork. So the Shiny Toy Guns CD was released prior to October 2007. The band are not eligible for a Grammy Nomination! They'll have to replace Shiny Toy Guns with another nominee.

Kanye West.... I agree, with the other commenter, why did he get so many nominations? I have a sinking feeling that the Grammy's are being judged more by whats out publicity wise on the artist, rather than solely the merits of the music, and throw nepotism in the industry into the mix, and well the sad fact is that the Grammy's are no longer a credible and prestigious award. I think 2007 will unveil the GRAMMY myth and end Grammys reign as the premier award show/venue for music/artists. It's been a long run for the Grammys but that long run is now OVER.

Again, when is the last time The Grammys were really that credible? When is the last time they got it right? Top 10 lists and award shows are pretty useless. More people tune in for the performances than to see who wins, I would think. Although more often than not the performances were kind of stale.

Also many bands have indie copies of a demo then re-release it. The STG controversy is sort of silly.

It's not like they are Milli Vanilli.

I'm sure there are more than a few Grammy rules that have become outdated - there are many more ways to hear and get music.. I don't need to tell anyone that..

Is this really the first time such an oh so controversial thing has happened? I doubt it.

Best Rock Album?

Greetings from the Garage-band Capital of the Universe...

Of couse the Grammy Awards are insane. What isn't insane in this great country of ours?

Most likely, 99.9% of the music listening audience doesn't even know the name John Fogerty. And an additional 85% probably don't even recall who Creedence Clearwater Revival was. But the man John Fogerty, who wrote such classics as Proud Mary, Born on the Bayou, and Have You Ever Seen the Rain, has what I consider the sleeper album of the year.

The album Revival has been nominated for Best Rock Album. Not too bad for a 62 year old that could blow the majority of the present day 20/30 something rockers right off the stage.

I'm not holding my breath that John Fogerty will walk away with a Grammy, but who cares when you have such a great songwriter still penning tunes, touring all over the world and performing that ageless rock and roll.

Oh and BTW -- Is there anyone around this thread that remembers Pearl Harbor? And I don't mean the band...

------- No wonder Shiny Toy Guns band got nominated! Universal Records is the label the band is signed with. I read the rules for CD releases to be eligible for nomination and the Shiny Toy Guns CD is not eligible since the band released WE ARE PILOTS for sale on the Internet before October of 2006 (March, April, May 2006 you could buy the CD online) the same tracks/arrangements/mixes that ended up on the We Are Pilots CD that Universal Records released on October 17, 2006. Waiting to see how this pans out, this will be very interesting to follow. Universal Records and Shiny Toy Guns have allot of explaining to do.

I had to comment after reading all these Shiny Toy Gun posts! Here's what I know about them,

the band apparently signed a million dollar deal with Universal/Motown and the label pumped big dollars into music videos for the band. The label hasn't recouped their investment yet, hence Universal Records big push to get Shiny Toy Guns nominated, they need to re-coup their investment! even if it means attempting to circumvent the nomination rules! Chuck says:

Kanye West? Amy Winehouse? Yeah, in the context of the history of the Grammys such nominations are a joke. But why should we be surprised? Someone wrote virtually the same article about last year's Oscars, listing six movies from 1949 that were head and shoulders above any movie nominated last year, and none of the six were nominated in 1949. We live in an age where nearly every form of creativity is forced into the respective corporate molds. There is simply no room for the kind of individual creative expression the '50's, '60's, and '70's...the corporate world doesn't allow for it. So the end result is people get nominated for Grammys and make millions of dollars who don't write their own material, don't play an instrument, and have to lip synch studio enhanced vocals: cookie cutter, formula
"entertainment."

I agree with most of what Tom has to say about the Grammy's past choices. And on Amy Winehouse as cultural juggernaut? Ridiculous. And I too thought there were only two good songs on her CD...that is, until I listened to it a few more times only to find that three other cuts had replaced those two and then, after a few more listens, other cuts began to emerge. That's what happens when you come across something that is really good--it doesn't just jump, or should I say "pop" (pun intended) right out at you. When I hear people bemoaning the fact that music is "conservative" or whatever, to me it sounds as musically narrow minded as my Dad's comments on hip hop. No doubt, part of Amy's work has a retro, R&B feel--part of--but there is a reason so many artists--notably from the hip hop world--are covering her songs and have expressed an interest in working with her.
As for Kanye--I'm still listening...and wondering.

Dear Mr. Sturges,

The Grammy nomination for the band 'Shiny Toy Guns' (Electronic/Dance
Album) is not eligible for nomination according to the Grammy
Awards nomination eligibility rules.
I am citing the Grammy rule below:
50th Annual Grammy Awards Nominations - For recordings released
during the Eligibility Year
October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2007

The Shiny Toy Guns album 'We Are Pilots'
was released prior to October 1, 2006.
The Shiny Toy Guns band independently released 'We Are Pilots'
with the same track list and completed recordings that
Universal/Motown records re-released under their label (October
17, 2006) The 'We Are Pilots' CD by Shiny Toy Guns was available
for digital download sale and full online Internet streaming
prior to October 1, 2006. Universal/Motown records simply changed
the album artwork/cover photograpy for their October 17, 2006
release of the album 'We Are Pilots'
The 'We Are Pilots' Shiny Toy Guns CD was released online by the
band prior to October 1, 2006 and is therefore not eligible for a
Grammy nomination.

AGAIN I REPEAT, FOR THE RECORD:
'We Are Pilots' by Shiny Toy Guns - track listing and completed
recorded tracks (as re-released by Universal/Motown records on
October 17, 2006) was released for full Internet online streaming by the band Shiny Toy Guns prior to October 1, 2006. Therefore the 'We Are Pilots' CD by Shiny Toy Guns is NOT ELIGIBLE for a Grammy nomination.

Please respond to this E-mail detailing what action the Grammy
Awardes Department intends to take with regards to this matter.

Universal/Motown records was well aware of the fact that Shiny
Toy Guns had released the 'We Are Pilots' CD on the Internet
prior to October 1, 2006 (the version that the record company then re-released on October 17, 2006 - with clear intention to attempt a Grammy nomination)

When will the nepotism at the Grammys end?

It is a known fact that Universal Records has invested a large
sum of money into the Shiny Toy Guns band and has not recouped
it's investment to date, hence (in my opinion) the attempt to
circumvent the Grammy Awards rules.

You may send a response E-mail to my address listed herein.
Written responses via snail mail can be sent to my attorney.
Mr. Stephen Kennedy, Esq.

Attn: (RE: Shiny Toy Guns matter)

Thank-you for your immediate attention to this very important
issue. Myself and many other music industry professionals, and
the public at large await the Grammy Awards Departments ruling
and course of action regarding Shiny Toy Guns 'We Are Pilots' Grammy nomination.

Sincerely,

awesome, well written article. you forgot to mention that Springsteen wasn't even nominated. that's a true shame!

Kanye was only nominated because the academy feels bad because he just lost his mother.

No one is mentioning the fact that King Diamond is up for a Grammy. I hope he performs (even with a herniated back) and the sheer evil offends the minds of the spineless, hapless audience. ;P

All this Shiny Toy Guns banter is hilarious, but not as hilarious as the one bit of actual publicity they've received in their brief, ludicrously fabricated career (from the band's WIKI PAGE):

"In 2006, it was speculated that Shiny Toy Guns lead vocalist Carah Faye Charnow was the dummy vocalist for Paris Hilton's debut album, Paris. In an MTV interview, Carah explained that the rumor was false and that while she had done some vocals on a dummy track that might go to Paris Hilton, it never went beyond that.

At least 2 of the members were involved in a wave runner crash on Sunday May 27, 2007 at Captain Dave's Watersports on St. Pete Beach, Florida in which damages were estimated to a total of $2,500. No injuries occurred from the accident."

Where was Diddy's "Press Play"? Clearly a better and more listenable CD than "TI vs TIP" and "Kingdome Come". And it's puff daddy, for christ's sake. Someone should get fired.

All the weird Shiny Toy Guns comments on here are written by the same person: an old, obsessive, DJ-wannabe stalker named Dalena DuBois. You can always pick out her weird rantings, even when they're under different names. It's actually quite hilarious to read some of the shit she creates.

You can always tell by the erratic bits of ALL CAPS and the repetitive sentences when you can tell she's teetering over the brink, such as "SHAM, IT'S A SHAM. Shameful Sham!" EL OH EL!

Also, if you want to see the depth of this Shiny Toy Gun stalker's insanity, call 411 and ask for the fake attorney name in the fake grammy letter she posted:

Mr. Stephen Kennedy, Esq.
305 Broadway, Suite 500
New York, NY 10007

No such attorney or business exists. Try it on google maps too. Then notice who signed the letter: DDuB, short for the stalker/spammer's name: Dalena DuBois.

Those comments are spam.

Been looking over all the Shiny Toy Guns posted comments and the shiny toy guns fans and people that are with the Shiny Toy Guns band, are posting shit about Dalena DuBois all over the internet again. A bunch of us were over at the Film Center building back in January 2006 and we know that what Dalena DuBois is saying about Shiny Toy Guns is accurate. Shes not making this shit up! and its so funny to see the band trying to SPIN things out to make her out to be nuts. Dalena DuBois is not nuts, she's a nice person who works hard on her music.

I checked out almost every posted comment on different sites and they have been posting crap about Dalena DuBois again.

And, there is a lawsuit again Shiny Toy Guns, Mike Martin, Jeremy Dawson, Chad Petree and Carah Faye Charnow, and that IS the lawyer that she had representing her. I don't know if she changed lawyers, but we saw a copy of the lawsuit against the band last year.

And interesting that they are calling her a stalker.
Mikey Martin the drummer for Shiny toy Guns STALKED HER and kept asking her to marry him. Then she sent E-mails to the band and they never told her to not send any emails and they took the emails and tried to charge her with stalking after she blogged about Carah Faye Charnow being Paris Hiltons dummy vocalist. Shiny Toy Guns had posted on their website in February 2006 that Carah Faye was Paris Hilton's dummy vocalist, so Dalena was blogging what she read on the shiny toy guns website. The band put it up on their site to try and get publicity!
There are plenty of witnesses to the stalking that Mikey martin did, he wouldn't leave her alone. and she was trying to get work done on her music.
I was one of the backing vocalists for some of her tracks.
Shiny Toy Guns are artists alright BULLSHIT ARTISTS. and every website where the band and their partners in crime have posted comments with death threats to Dalena DuBois and other comments, well when they go to court I've heard that the lawyer is going to subpeona every website and get the IP address/names for each comment and track down the people connected to Shiny Toy Guns that are posting the comments about Dalena Dubois. So all this will be sorted out within the next year in court.
Dalena DuBois sued Shiny Toy Guns. the lawsuit (which we have seen a copy of) was ready to be served on Shiny Toy Guns back in 2006, but the band kept touring and tried to avoid service.
they are going to have to face the music now!!!! shiny toy guns are ASSHOLES, they are not what they appear to be vis a vis their public image.

and the Grammy award nomination was a bullshit nomination so that Shiny Toy Guns would get publicity so that they could try to sell their CD. Shiny Toy Guns was not eligible for a grammy nomination, the album had already been released (like 4 times!) Shiny Toy Guns will not get a grammy award and the nomination is going to be pulled!

If you are a shiny toy guns fan, face the fact that shiny toy guns are rip off artists frauds and bullshit artists.

Johnny says:

"$$$$$$$$$$", determines music to the average listener in America.

Most Americans have NOT even heard of Winehouse and she has NOT been regularly requested by Radio listeners.

Case in point, last night when Cindy Lauper and the other presenter listed the nominees with videos of each nominee with their song, Winehouse, who was NOT mentioned as a nominee, WON?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Bullocks!!!!

And we don't even need to reference how the "music industry" used to be in regards to "artists" with alcohol and drug problems, they were not representative of the industry. Whats changed? $$$$$$$$$$$ and lack of album sales. They have to recoup something.

The whole thing is dictated by $$$$$$ to the average listener, "Here listen to this, you'll like it, it's a Grammy nominee". MUSIC PUSHERS = DRUG PUSHERS.

It's also interesting to note that they keep honoring the "legends of music", The Beatles, CCR, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis at the same time as they push the new artists so it may appear that it's just as relevant.

The older "Music Artists" they keep honoring have been through the battles of record releasing, touring, promotion, and they look at "American Idol" and these "new Artists the industry is pushing" and say, "Where's the artistry? How did it get this way?"

The answer is $$$$$$$$$$$$.

There's No Relevance to the Grammy's and indeed the talent pales to the older artists.

It's all about who you slept with.

Do they have $$$$ ?

Or do they have connections?

What a SHAM!!!
