American Idol Week Six: The Archuleta Problem

Posted by Tom Breihan at 12:49 PM, March 26, 2008

Know role. Shut mouth.

This one time in college, I watched Monday Night Raw in a coworker's dorm room with him and a bunch of his friends, and all these kids could do was talk about the Rock. The main event that night was a pretty great ten-man tag-team match, five good guys against five bad guys, and these chumps could barely watch the thing because the Rock wasn't in it the whole time. Every time one of the good guys would tag in Cactus Jack or Rikishi or whoever, they'd all be like, "No! What are you doing? The Rock is right there!" This, for me, was weird. These guys weren't fans of wrestling or the WWF or anything; they were fans of the Rock and nothing else. The WWF could've replaced the entire undercard with footage of the Rock spouting catchphrases at the camera for two hours, and they would've been perfectly happy. Judging by my comments section and the screams that flare up whenever Ryan Seacrest mentions the kid's name, this is how the assembled grandmothers and 12-year-old girls of America feel about David Archuleta. The whole idea of American Idol and the concept of singing in general are becoming entirely secondary to the inexplicable cultlike appeal of this big-toothed gnome-child, and I don't get it at all. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems like he could suck mightily every week from now until the finale and still coast through to win the thing. I don't even know how this happened, but I'm finding myself rooting hard against him if only so this show will lose the stink of inevitability. Uncritical, unconditional devotion is just creepy like that.

Actually, though, Arculeta wasn't all that bad this week. This was probably my favorite non-"Imagine" performance of his; that sort of Richard Marxist adult-contempo synth-goop is pretty much his lane. I was happy when Simon took a shot at his stage-managed situation, but I didn't quite agree with his big thumbs-down. This week, in fact, was something of a landmark: I'm not sure I've ever disagreed with the judges quite so consistently. The idea behind this week's show was that all the contestants were doing songs from the years of their birth. Given the age-spread of this year's contestants, that basically meant another 80s week, which would ordinarily be fine with me. But too many of the contestants either couldn't quite connect with their material or opted for the hammiest shit imaginable. Out of some combination of patriotic fervor and vote-grubbing desperation, perpetual bottom-three-dweller Kristy Lee Cook sang Lee Greenwood's jingoistic jock-jam "God Bless the USA," a song I never want to hear unless I'm at a rodeo or some shit, and she did it, of course, like it was "Amazing Grace." The judges loved it. Michael Johns, not to be outdone on the sporting-event front, actually did motherfucking "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions." He sang them well enough, but this was both a gallingly obvious classic-rock move and a trip deep into cheeseball territory. The judges loved it.

It cut both ways. Carly Smithson's presence might be a blight on the very concept of the show, but I was actually pretty amped about her take on "Total Eclipse of the Heart." She shanked a couple of notes, but she did over-the-top bombast with serious intensity, and it was sort of fun to hear this song as something other than a half-ironic drunken party singalong. (And that song has become a mainstay of half-ironic druken party singalongs, after all, because it rules.) Ramiele Malubay also did pretty well with another scenery-chewing power-ballad, Heart's "Alone," and she did pretty well with the big notes, though she did herself no favors by standing still and shivering on the stage like a scared little kid. The judges stomped all over both of them. Simon wouldn't even give due props to the show's one clear standout performance, Syesha Mercado's take on Stephanie Mills's "If I Were Your Woman," a serious old-school soul-jam that would've really helped to make her a favorite if America had any idea who Stephanie Mills was. Syesha has had two pretty great weeks in a row now, something I didn't see coming, but I'd have a much easier time getting to like her if she didn't come off so completely weird and fake in all the pre-performance video-clips. She even gave an encore of her screeching-baby impression this week, which yeesh.

The contestants I've already gotten to like, meanwhile, all had glaring off-weeks. Chikezie was good but boring, and he showed that he's totally content to play the Luther Vandross impersonator when the show's theme isn't forcing him outside his comfort zone, which doesn't say anything good about his post-Idol viability. Jason Castro, great when he's working with a great song, proved this week that he's basically going to suck until another great song comes along. Doing solo Sting this week, he verged on Enrique Iglesias, not a good look. And David Cook took "Billie Jean," one of the greatest pop songs ever, and stripped it of everything good: its icy tension, its slippery groove, its falsetto yips. Instead, he made it sound like a soulful moment with the guy from Nickelback. Cook can do whatever he wants with the entire Lionel Ritchie catalogue for all I care, but he needs to be very careful about shitting all over deathless paranoiac party-starters like that one. And he apparently bit Chris Cornell's version, which gives me one more reason to hate Chris Cornell. One more show like that and I'm officially over Cook. The judges, needless to say, loved it.

David Archuleta sucks ass.

I can't stand AI but I read this column every week. That's bizarre. I also can't not sing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" without doing it how the wedding singer in Old School does.

Posted by: goathair at March 26, 2008 3:06 PM

America has no idea who Stephanie Mills is? Hmmm...when you say "America", I'm guessing you mean white folks??? Silly me.

Posted by: at March 26, 2008 3:20 PM

I'm no longer sure about those tween girls and their supposedly staunch loyalty to David A. - if you look at the predictions from dialidol.com, where he's thus far had a big lead, they dropped him like a hot potato last night. David Cook took a big lead and David A. went way back just barely making #2, closer to Carly. Since that didn't happen when he forgot the lyrics, I have to wonder if it's the annointing of a new girlfriend by big mouth Seacrest that sent them away in droves.

Posted by: e. at March 26, 2008 3:33 PM

I think david arculeta is just so cute! I think he's also very talented. He should win the competition.

Posted by: chrissie at March 26, 2008 3:37 PM

Is it just me or has anyone noticed the weird breathy sounds that David does when he sings ?? Not to mention the whole annoying tongue think. Is this a singing contest or a popularity contest ? David Cook is incredibly authentic and makes every song he does his own.

Posted by: beachgurl at March 26, 2008 3:38 PM

And since when asked about girlfriends David A. always made it clear he was focusing on his music for now, and mentioned he'd never had a girlfriend - which created gay rumors - strange that suddenly there's a girl sitting front & center, right next to his father - who smiles smarmily when Seacrest mentions the girlfriend - like perhaps, the dad has now squelched those pesky gay rumors? Creepy dad, indeed. Great article, by the way...

Posted by: at March 26, 2008 3:53 PM

Only sing God Bless The USA at "rodeos or some shit" maybe your butt belongs in Iraq protecting the people of that country and ours if you don't understand the passion Lee Greenwood felt in writing the song and in most Americans when they hear it.
As for Kristy Lee you are correct she has been a bottom dweller but guess what
maybe where she's from everyone still believes in America and maybe it was her favorite song from her birth year. Regardless she nailed that song last night and even Simon agreed.
Thank God you're a critic and not a soldier! Stick to your opinions of their talent and keep your's to yourself about other things and I'll do the same.

Posted by: bob ladd at March 26, 2008 4:05 PM

David talks like a retard anyway! I'm glad that America is slowly realizing that he's NOT that good as thought.

He's definitely not going to get a vote from me!!!

Posted by: MS at March 26, 2008 4:08 PM

ehh... personally I found the David Cook / Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean waaaaay better than the original. I agree about the David A. tho, just a creepy guy.

Posted by: Steph at March 26, 2008 4:27 PM

Simon stopped short of saying what everyone was thinking: That song was a guaranteed way of ensuring she didn't get voted off this week. The only way to one up that would be to drape herself with the flag and sing the Star Spangled Banner. It kind of surprises me no-one has resorted to that yet.

Posted by: at March 26, 2008 4:50 PM

OMG the guy is sounding more and more dull each week. i think americans are so stoopid

Posted by: rowdy at March 26, 2008 4:53 PM

This kid in high school (who I hated with utter passion because he was a dick to me for no reason) I knew used to go on and on in my playwrighting class about the wonders of Total Eclipse Of The Heart (He called it the greatest pop song ever written), Juvenile's Back That Azz Up, and Wesley Willis.

I kind of wonder what ever happened to him.

Posted by: DocZeusX at March 26, 2008 4:57 PM

I AGREE WITH YOU 1,000% on David Cook's 'Billie Jean'...THAT WAS TOTALLY BORINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG to no end...

I have no idea what the judges like about it. I was really really bad.

Posted by: charles at March 26, 2008 4:59 PM

Michael Johns and David Cook will certainly be the last men standing. This show is about having IT and they do.

Posted by: Blondie at March 26, 2008 5:05 PM

Are you fucking kidding me? David Cook authentic & original? LMFAO!!!
He also looks like a freakin trany, is it a guy or a girl I can't tell sometimes!

Plus he copies every song he has done with someone else's version & Randy & Paula get all "OMG you are so amazingly original dawg" & lick his ass like he shits ice cream!!

Michael Johns is far more talented & oozes sexuality & charisma beyond anyone else & David Archuleta has without a doubt the best vocals so they should be the Final 2 standing!

I am not a teenager but a married woman in my 40's and I too love David Archuleta. He is pure, sweet, mature and needless to say extremely talented. So if he says he has a girlfriend or not, when was that a rule on being part of American Idol. Missing his prom that is adorable...what talent did some of you have to show off when you were in High School and 17 years old? Needless to say to have the guts to stand up to those judges and be part of AI top 10? He is one of the most marketable singers in that group...David C OK he has a decent voice, and now that his haircut and outfits have improved, has shown a little more talent in his 20's than his arrogance, but needless to say, just another rocker...soon he too will have tattoos wear a mohawk and shout his rock songs to the audience...I loved Daughtry, great voice...but hated his recent concert...hate to see anybody wear Eyeliner, scream at the mike, and have his group with their tatoos and mohawk dos share the glory of so called untalented rockers..Who would have thought that Michael Jackson when he was 10 years old will grow to be a millionaire...not a rocker, but some excellent marketing and great vocals...Archuleta touches all audiences young and old with his maturity, great vocals and youth. Go David. You are my American Idol...Congratulations on your success. :) Rcokers come an go...great vocalists stay in the game..:)

"ehh... personally I found the David Cook / Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean waaaaay better than the original. I agree about the David A. tho, just a creepy guy."

Steph-

Whenever Tom gets his write on about American Idol [and he, along with Ann Powers over at the L.A. Times are two of the few people who are actually on point with their reviews week after week], I expect 500,000 comments, most of them crazy, stupid, or absurd. But this one simply takes the cake. I can't even comment on anything else that was said. David Cook/Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean better than the original? Really? I hope you're joking, cause if not, you're dead wrong Steph. Dead wrong...

Posted by: Tauwan at March 26, 2008 7:16 PM

Hey, Susan, we're the same age bracket and I agree with you 100% on your comments on David Archuleta. An American Idol should be someone that could send positive vibes and trancend all age brackets. I'm from South East Asia and I watch AI because of David. I cannot vote so I've asked my relatives in New York, New Jersey and California to vote for him like crazy.

David A is actually a friend of my daughter (they go to school together and hang in the same group) and he does not have a "girlfriend" like it was implied last night. The girl there was indeed a long time friend, but nothing more. David is a good kid and I hope he does well.

Posted by: SoccerBoy at March 26, 2008 9:33 PM

I knew that was "implied" & it seemed staged however I also knew it would throw teen girls around the country into a panic state & they would forget to vote which may have happened slightly so hopefully that little stunt by Ryan will be forgotten soon enough! LOL!

Hey all you people that can't sing a note of music, music much less have a god given talent to hear all harmony parts ( by the way if you sing in a group in Southern Gospel Music, being able to hear the parts is a must.) and don't actually reliazewhat pure singing is, but David Archuleta has everything, stage persense, charsima, the ability to connect to his audience and most of all he has a true singers voice and sings correctly. I am lmost 65 years old and I have the God given talent, have used it and have sang with the best of the best over the years and I know talent when I see it and hear it and maybe these young people that are there can carry a tune, they are not great singers. One of the best singers was voted off last night.

Christy Lee Cook's vocals are always pure. She is lacking in stage presence, but she has a better , clearer voice than any of the other females on American Idol. Also Simon is right most of the time, but not all the time.

Hi,Join us next week for American Idols' first ever "Gimmicks, Patriots & Scoundrels" week...Watch as Chikezie does his heartrending version of George M. Cohans' "Yankee Doodle Dandy", listen as Ramiele, outfitted in full Munchkin garb, tiptoes trough that great The Wizard of Oz classic "The Lollipop Guild", enjoy Jason Castro as he slows the tempo down a bit & and chants Phil Ochs' classic "Draft Dodger Rag', then after the break, Michael Johns, while watching The Wizard of Oz on his new iPhone, condenses Pink Floyds' “Dark Side of The Moon" into a one minute, forty five second masterpiece...again, after a short break, Syeshea croons Billie Holidays' "Strange Fruit" with props, Carly Smithson, dressed in IRA fatigues whales through Dylans' "Masters of War" and surprise special guest Dick Cheney, does a heart wrenching version of Barry McGuires’ Eve of Destruction’ while plucking his latest kill…Brooke White, suspended from the rafters, give a pitch perfect rendition of The Cheers Theme Song, David Archuleta dressed as Alvin brings the house down with The Chipmunk Song and finally Kristy Lee Cook recently back from Baghdad, does a melody of “The Battle Hymn of The Republic”, “The Star Spangled Banner” and the Royal Guardsmens’ “Snoopy vs. The Red Baron”.

Don't care for Archuleta, but I do not understand the mean spirited attacks on him. He just turned 17, but he looks and has the demeanor of a 14 yro.Hope everyone attacking him is under 21. No mature adult would attack a child in this manner. And,if every 16 or 17 yro that has not yet had a girlfriend is gay, the number of senior proms and the future birth rate are about to drop drastically.

Posted by: ghrtt3 at March 27, 2008 7:23 AM

Hey bob ladd, go fuck yourself buddy. Liking that shitty ass "God bless the USA" song has nothing to do with liking your country. In fact, nobody likes Lee Greenwood but terrorists & insurgents. Which means you, you stupid patriot-fuckhead.

Posted by: mike at March 26, 2008 4:40 PM

I'm sure Bob Ladd will not respond to your vulgarity, so I will. You are showing your lack of intelligence and you were obviously raised in some uncivilized community.Still laughing over who you think likes L.G. Get a brain, get a hobby, get a job.You could also use some grammar classes.

Posted by: mad5673 at March 27, 2008 7:32 AM

To the earlier poster - gay men of the 45+ generation of all colours will also be very acquainted with the fantastic Stephanie Mills. She was one of our idols back in the 70s and 80s.

Posted by: patashnik at March 27, 2008 8:22 AM

I do agree that Archuleta is slightly annoying, overrated and is not ready. Don't get me wrong, he has a great voice but his lame "can't we just all get along" song choices and Richard Marx voice need to go. He should be better in about 4 or 5 years.
I completely disagree on David Lee Cook though. He is outstanding. He might not have the best voice to ever hit the show, or the best voice this season for that matter, but he knows how to sing within himself. He also knows when to pour it on, unlike most the people with bigger voices who tend to go overboard every chance they get (see whats-her-names version of Yesterday). His version of Billie Jean was outstanding. Everything about it was outstanding, the arrangement, the melody, the performance. Quite frankly, out of all the contestants this year, he just has the "it" factor each and every week and is going to end up with some big hits regardless if he wins this competition or not.

Posted by: Dave at March 27, 2008 9:39 AM

Uncritical, unconditional devotion is just creepy like that.

hmm, so you aren't unconditionally devoted to Lil' Wayne? You found justification for "Lollipop," when in all reality the song is just Lil' Wayne ensuring he will make some money out of Tha Carter III, by creating a single that people who actually still buy their CDs will like.

Posted by: farsideoff at March 27, 2008 10:17 AM

Also, just the fact that you not only watch American Idol, but choose to write about it, doesn't make your opinions any more valid. I hope your fellow Pitchfork writers either haze you or knock some sense into you. Please write about something of quality and substance, it'd be a shame to see you continue to waste your talent on such a frivolous popularity contest that lacks any real musical merit. Wouldn't you rather just have A.I. go away, do you actually enjoy it, or do you simply revel in being able to publish your opinions about something many Americans waste 2+ hours of the week watching?

Posted by: farsideoff at March 27, 2008 10:24 AM

I am so tired of hearing about David Cook and his supposed originality. I liked his performance, but he is not unique, original or bold. Ever since "Hello" was a hit, he does the same thing week after week. He takes a pure pop song and looks for a rock arrangement of that song (sometimes giving credit to the arranger and sometimes not). The arrangements he picks are less well known so it makes him look as if he is original and interesting. But he is doing the same as all of the other contestants - covering an arrangement put together by another person or group. His version of "Hello" was Incubus' version, "Day Tripper" was a Whitesnake arrangement, "Eleanor Rigby" was the Doxology version, and "Billie Jean" was the Chris Cornell arrangement. The judges should know this and it is ridiculous that they continue to portray him as original and innovative. He is a good performer, but far from original.

I like David, very talented for one so young. Although I do prefer a performer that is more mature and seasoned, I see big things for him in the future. Which is truly what this program does for performers, helps them receive the visability to launch a career.
Truly enjoying music isn't about embracing just one genre, and hating every other type.
It seems not every Idol winner has made it big, I've questioned the Publics choices a couple of times over the years the Idol has been out. One being .......why Chris Dauthry did not make the final, this was a true clue to the average viewer of the program.
David Cooks version of Billy Jean was daring........considering the style he performs, I'm old enough to remember when the Micheal Jackson original came out, liked it!.......out of all the songs performed that night, it's one I would download.
Lets not get ugly with the comments, after all it is only a TV program.

David Archuleta is the real winner to be. He copies no one's style. Now if only the father would butt out and leave the kid to 'do his own thing'.

I don't understand. Do people just search for every Idol article and copypasta the same comments? Why is a real American who tears up at a Lee Greenwood joint reading the Voice's hip hop blog?

Posted by: wrshamilton at March 28, 2008 11:14 PM

I liked Kristy Lee Cook until she did that patriotic song. YES it's a nice feel-good song, YES she sang it pretty well, but has anybody else noticed that the only time she ever does well is when she sings songs like Amazing Grace or some patriotic thing? Is she gonna come out with an album chock full of songs like that? It was a flimsy attempt to get herself some votes from Americans who would feel bad if they DIDNT vote for that song. Note: they voted for the SONG, not the girl.

If David Archuleta doesn't win American Idol, the show's lost all credibility.

Posted by: Samara at March 29, 2008 10:14 AM

Wow. Reading the article, then the comments, it pretty obvious there are a lot of pompus fuzzballs living in the village.

AI is simple (very simple) entertainment, not designed to be the saving formula for the planet.

Either change the station or shut the TV off, but Geez, stop bitchin' so much over so little.

You morons who think you know why Kristy Lee Cook sang thaat song are just as I say, "morons", that song means allot to many veterans. Her father, mother, and many other relatives including her uncle who was twice nominated for a congretional medal of honor are all veterans. I being one relative who loved that song and was thankful to hear it. Maybe you should move to a communist country and enjoy the living you would have there. Fricken jerks.

Wow, I LOVE American Idol and everyone of you people do too!! Otherwise you wouldn't spend the time and energy to post here. Even the ones who say they hate it, love it secretly. It's interesting that you all think you're right. Everybody is entitled to an opinion but that doesn't make you right or wrong. Chill out a little and stop being so negative about a bunch of people you have never met and know very little about. Just enjoy it or stop watching it.

Posted by: idoleyes at April 1, 2008 11:08 AM

David A. is truly what AI is all about...young, unassuming, talented, can sing, and everything in between that idols, american or otherwise, should be. he should win it all the way, provided ai remains a talent show and not a popularity contest.

Since when did Idol become a "composing" competition? David Cook is NOT on this show as a songwriter or arranger, so why the hell do people keep commenting on his "lack of originality for stealing other people's arrangement?" Here's a BIG SHOCKER for you folks, NONE OF THESE KIDS WROTE THESE SONGS!!! NOT ONE! They are ALL covers! What moronic idiots! Don't blame the contestants because the judges call them "original." It ain't his fault they have no clue. Can we just give the whole "stealing people's songs" and "give credit where it's due" thing a rest? When it comes down to pure talent, the stupid fans of the little boy with the stuffed nose who sounds like Rudolph (yes, the reindeer) at a Christian rock praise-a-thon will all call "foul on originality" just because it's the only thing they can attempt to criticize. David Cook rocks EVERY WEEK. Even when he "sucks" (which has been....never), he's better than all the rest.

I think that all the contestants are very talented. It takes a lot of courage to do what they do every week. I am almost certain that none of the people who give their opinions on the site know nothing about what it takes to get up in front of millions of people every week and do what they do. Granted some are better than others in my opinion, but they will all be richer than any of us ever dreamed of. Some will get there quicker than others but they will all cut record deals that will make their dreams come true. Apparently all we have to look foward to is putting them all down. Have your favorite but also have respect for what they are doing. I am a idol fan I have been from the start and if I am not mistaken this show has produced some really big talent for us all to enjoy, so just do that.

When a person has a small vocabulary they use words they are used to, like swearing. Enough, won't read you again

Posted by: james Tomasi at April 4, 2008 10:20 AM

you are making the assumption that all of your opinions are correct. i personally disagreed with much of what you said. also, if i was your woman was originally done and was a huge hit for gladys knight. the mills version was a remake.

For the life of me can't understand the fascination with the kid Archuleta. Forgetting words to a song normally will get you booted off and he still sails through. If I recall Simon said "that was a mess." In another critique, he said that sounded like he was at some theme park with animal characters dancing in the background, and also gave him a thumbs down on one of this song choices referencing his stage Dad's influence, etc. He does sound out of breath sometimes. His cult-like following is bizaar. The kid is 17 and all he sings is ballads? I am finding him more boring as the weeks go by but nobody else thinks so. There will be no surprises this year because he could get on stage and blow all his words and still win AI. In the real word--once Idol is done I just don't see him making it. He'll fade quickly because it's tough out there. All those tweens voted for Jordin (who has a much better and powerful voice than Archuleta) has only now managed to go Gold and the AI executives are surprised she didn't catch on with the public. You see tweens are fickle and they move on, and now they have moved onto Archuleta for this season. The only person who was successful doing ballads on AI was Clay Aiken and he came in second and Archuleta is no Clay Aiken. Clay is fantastic and his fans stuck with him and he adds new fans. You can't touch Clay Aiken's voice and power and his fans are loyal. As far as past AI contestants from all the seasons--Archuleta is mediocre at best.

Will everyone stop picking on David Archuleta's looks and speaking voice, for God's sake this is a SINGING competition.. and this is a beautiful, sensitive, fragile CHILD> 'nuff said. Sad that since you guys can't criticize his talent you have to hurt him emotionally for no reason.

What a shame.

P.S. I am a 31 year old mother and he is my favorite.

LOVE LOVE LOVE DAVID ARCHULETA! He is the best so far in all American Idol history. Aside from his great voice, his innocence and humility are what American Teenagers need to learn and practice right now. Totally a good role model.

Posted by: Kenny Chan at April 15, 2008 10:25 PM

David Archuleta is the perfect role model, he has the whole package at the young age of 17. Way to go david.

P.s. I am a 34 year old wife and mother.

David A is just awesome...

Posted by: Ryan Chow at April 20, 2008 10:49 PM

You're right, the singing is secondary... hell, the whole show isn't even about music, real music, and it's true definition. It's all about our strangely diabolical need to feed off other peoples' misadventures... did she miss a note, did his voice crack, did she have a meltdown, etc. Which is fine, that's reality TV and I certainly watch a lot of it. But the fact that Idol is passing this stuff off as music, is a sham. And it's really sad that America's youth is growing up thinking that this is where the high bar is. Is Mariah Carey what our up-and-coming singer songwriters are aspiring to be? Kill me now.

I am a HUUUUUUGE David Archuleta fan... And 4 all the ppl saying he is gay, u shood stop trying 2 put him down! I wood TOTALLY date him if i cood... but i live in Canada. :( Anyway, I think his voice is unique and pure. He is definatly MY American Idol!! But even if he doesnt win, he will probably get a good recording deal somewhere. :D i also love David Cook and Syesha. I loved Carly Smithson, i cant believe she was voted off!
So, David A, if u ever read this, just know that I love you!

How I hate reading criticism which clearly comes from a miserable sexually frustrated selfabsorbed guy, who´s -out of his complete ignorance- just vomiting over everything. First time I came across this site. Last time for sure.

Posted by: eva at April 28, 2008 3:05 PM

all this hype about David A.is very touching but he only sings well singing songs he's not even old enough to know what the words mean.Tanya Tucker is the only one heard that I ever that made it and she burned out quite young .David is to young to through his life away.He should wait a couple of years and try again.Syesha is the only one left with the talent and class to be a money maker,GOOD LUCK SYESHA
