In Defense of Lil Wayne's "Lollipop"

Wayne: "Dudes are gonna hate this one... Ugly dudes, that is"

On paper, Lil Wayne's new single "Lollipop" should be a complete travesty, a blatant sellout-move capitulation to everything lame in today's pop-music world: gallingly obvious central lyrical sex-as-candy analogy, T-Pain-esque layered-up autotuned vocals, simplistic snap-music drum-pattern, hushed trancey synth-whooshes playing something that sounds suspiciously like the melody to Flo Rida's "Low," no rapping whatsoever, vocal cameo from a dead guy, and, at least in the video, screaming butt-rock guitar solos. It's almost like Wayne concocted the whole thing specifically to annoy and provoke his vast internet hater community. And as a career move, it's almost perversely ballsy: the guy making borderline sacrilegious noise about how he's the best rapper alive releasing a single on which he doesn't rap a single word. It's a naked pop move, sure, but if it doesn't do what it's supposed to do and get Wayne's voice all over top-40 radio, it's the sort of song that could haunt him for the rest of his life. In a weird way, Wayne's throwing all his cards on the table. He's released mixtape after mixtape over the past couple of years, but he's held back on putting out an album for so long that the amount of scrutiny that he'll be facing with Tha Carter III is going to be just insane. A lot of people think he's biding his time because he doesn't have a classic album in him. And maybe they're right. By putting a song like "Lollipop" out into the world and filming a glitzy, expensive video for it, Wayne's giving his doubters exactly what they're waiting for. As a pure asshole move, it's pretty great. But that's not why I like "Lollipop." I like it because it's a good song.

Let me talk about Dave Tompkins for a minute. There might be a few people alive who know more about who know more about electro and vocoders and general robot music than Dave Tompkins, but there sure aren't many, and there's definitely nobody who writes about it better. Sometime last year, I asked Dave what he thought about one of the bigger electro-informed rap hits that was floating around, one I liked a lot. Tompkins didn't like it. He said that too much of what passes for electro nowadays doesn't have the open space and fucked-up twittering noises of so much of the music he loved, and I think I know what he meant. Beyond Wayne's deranged rasp of a voice, there aren't any fucked-up twittering noises on "Lollipop," but there is that same sense of empty space that I hear in, say, Earth Wind & Fire's "Let's Groove" or Cli-N-Tel's "2030."

Where a T-Pain will fill every last available nook of a track with his multitracked computerized bleat, Wayne leaves the track relatively unmolested, letting the pretty little synth-arpeggio bleep away in peace. The drum-track is a minimal little heartbeat thump, snares and handclaps sometimes lightly ticcing around it. There's a soft background spaceship whirr that wells up and then disappears suddenly. Wayne's not a great singer by any stretch, but that doesn't matter much with the autotuner involved, and his voice is way too craggy and singular for all those effects to sap away its idiosyncrasies. His vocals just lazily drift along with the track; he never tries to fight the beat or force it in any one particular direction. It's hard to say how much of the track's regal grace comes from Wayne's dead-guy collaborator Static Major, but given that that guy helped make some of the greatest weird-smooth R&B of the past fifteen years as a frequent collaborator of Timbaland and Ginuwine and Aaliyah, it stands to reason that his inclusion was no accident. If nothing else, Static's involvement indicates that Wayne had the sense to work with an underappreciated master of the form, tapping his expertise just before his sudden tragic death.

The song's video is a typically glossy and show-offy affair, but I like how its garden-variety surreal plotline meshes with its airy track. As it opens, we see Wayne and Static getting ready to go out; both of them, for whatever reason, decide to wear disheveled, tore-up tuxes. A stretch Hummer pulls up outside, and they're happily surprised that it's full of video chicks. But as the song's chorus kicks in, Wayne doesn't waste much time partying with the video chicks. Instead, he opts to change into a completely different outfit and then climb onto the Hummer's roof, where he plays a fiery butt-rock guitar solo as the truck rolls in slo-mo down the Vegas strip. As gratuitous music-video melodrama goes, this reminds me of Slash walking out of Axl's desert-church wedding to play a fiery butt-rock guitar solo, a scene that may have even been Wayne's inspiration here. And I love the way that blinking whirlwind of lights creeps past him; he looks like he's being suspended in space while the world explodes around him.

In this week's Mixtape Monday column on MTV.com, Wayne runs down his newest laundry list of inspirations, and almost everyone on there is either batshit-crazy or deeply embarrassing, sometimes both: T-Pain, Prince, Wyclef, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, motherfucking Lenny Kravitz. I don't particularly want to see any of these people influencing the man who would be the best rapper alive, but it says something that Wayne managed to pull something sly and heady out of that miasmic web of bullshit. I don't know whether "Lollipop" will actually succeed as Wayne's pop single or not, but I heard it coming out of a whole lot of car windows in Brooklyn this past weekend. I'd say that's a good sign. And if "Lollipop" does turn out to be Wayne's "Candy Shop," it'll mean he's managed to pull that trick off without compromising his own central weirdness. That's something worth celebrating.

It must be a lot easier to defend this song if you think of it as having "no rapping whatsoever," to me the verses just scan as really slow, simple rapping with no interesting rhymes.

Posted by: Government Names at March 17, 2008 6:13 PM

This is a really interesting defense starting out, though I really don't see it at as anymore a calculated asshole move than any other bizarre shit Wayne's done. He probably lit up and started giggling about the vocoder and next thing you know he's in the booth. But it comes down to that last paragraph. I doubt he's studying like, the Erykah Badu oeuvre looking for new ways to express inspiration. It's not that he admires those artists and can't wait to up the batshit ratio, it's that everyone of them except Kravitz (don't worry Keys and Pain, your day is coming) were driven literally fucking insane trying to write hits. And that's what "Lollipop" is. More transparent than ever, that is an artist driven insane to deliver on his promises, and in Wayne's case, he really doesn't believe there's any direction but commercial. If he did, Da Drought 3 or one of his mixtapes would've been the damn album.

Posted by: Dan Weiss at March 17, 2008 6:42 PM

Lil Wayne,

Please rap some more about eating stars. Those were some good raps. You may still use the vocoder if you want.

Thank you.

You Basiclly took the words right out of my mouth. I would like to add on though that the reason for him acting so crazy and releasing a song like this is because of us the fans we gave him too much confidence and he got overtly cocky and this is what has happened if he had had more haters than fans this album would be classic but because of our undying support he thinks he is capable of anything but he's not he needs to return to his roots like: Tha Carter II, Dedication 2, and Da Drought 3 that is classic album worthy not this.

I've noticed Bol, and occasionally myself, criticize when you do this because, clearly despite trying to find something good about the song, its complete shit. There's nothing musically redeeming about this, and this seems to be a textbook Briehan-ism. But shit, you got to be doing something right to have a blogger term named after you.

Still, good post, and you're referencing Static as "that dead guy" is kind of funny and, despite posthumous write-ups, is sort of how these sort of minimal figures are viewed as despite any lionization..

Posted by: K_DUB aka da whiz kid at March 17, 2008 9:52 PM

THE SONG IS FIRE! I agree the lyrics are simple, but his swagger is just raw. He is so confident. Ive heard ALL waynes stuff. And you have to give him credit for dropping a club banger like this. Its not his style really. I think he nailed it. Everybody is talking about it in Seattle.

Posted by: 1thruth at March 17, 2008 11:07 PM

the song's dope and hilarious, in that weird Wayne way. good post

Posted by: Trey Stone at March 17, 2008 11:26 PM

and lol@the whole "badass" look on the single cover

Posted by: Trey Stone at March 17, 2008 11:27 PM

i like the song...but the video??? I didn't think it fit the song. Wayne looks way too upbeat and giddy the whole time. The beats a little darker than that. Needs a strip club setting with slow mo dances....fuck the hummer.

Posted by: Anonymous at March 18, 2008 12:16 AM

Yeah, I'm usually looking for something like "Tha Mobb" out of Wayne, but this is a good single. I don't want a whole album of weightless, airy synth pop from dude, but as a single this is immaculate. If it had been released by Annie or Robyn, the internets would be going nuts (which doesn't really redeem it for hip hop dudes, I know but whatever).

Also, the version with the guitar needs to go on the album.

Posted by: Jonathan at March 18, 2008 12:19 AM

Also, Lil' Weiss, I think you're understimating Weezy here. Love it or hate it, this song has been carefully crafted. It doesn't sound like a baked goof. Dude knows exactly what he's doing.

Posted by: Jonathan at March 18, 2008 12:24 AM

An unimaginably atrocious song. Lil' Wayne gets away with murder because of his supposed weirdness and originality as if Kool Keith or Ol' Dirty Bastard wasn't doing this shit 15 years ago. Let's put it this way if T.I. or god forbid, Young Jeezy tried to pull this shit, it would be seen as a vulgar crossover move but because Weezy and his supposed weirdness does this, its hailed as visionary ironic genius. Fuck that. Intentional ironic humor isn't ironic. It's bullshit. You need to get off the syrup people.

Posted by: DocZeusX at March 18, 2008 12:56 AM

I agree with DocZeus. And all the "open space" detracts from the song. "Buy You A Drank" may not be great electro, but it's great pop. This is just a guy mumbling in a very uncatchy way over some beeps. However you want to categorize it, it doesn't succeed. It's like a really bad take on that Cassie song about giving head. Now "Birthday Girl," on the other hand, is a perfectly defensible song.

Posted by: bongman at March 18, 2008 11:18 AM

Jonathan-

maybe it has been carefully crafted, but "immaculate," really?

Posted by: Dan Weiss at March 18, 2008 11:44 AM

Great single. Pop in an avantgardish kind of way.

Posted by: Jef at March 18, 2008 1:25 PM

Yes, if TI or Jeezy made this song it would be a crossover move because they'd suck all of their personality- if they have one to begin with- out of it; Wayne doesn't do that. Some say its because he's a real artist and some because he's crazy but either way, it's pretty retarded to be like "If TI did this song, people would be hating"...if TI did this EXACT SONG, they wouldn't. I think this song is pretty awful though but its pretty much an extension of stuff on 'Drought 4'

Posted by: brandon soderberg at March 18, 2008 2:04 PM

Guess what? He's not the greatest rapper alive. He's not a top ten rapper. Another pile of hit-or-miss metaphors. (Usually, misses like a married woman. See how easy it is.) This song is trash. At least with "Birthday Girl," there's a story with the song, not the usual candy-sex analogy.

ATTN: ALL RAPPERS....GIVE UP THE VOCODER. THE VOCODER IS THE 2008 8-BALL JACKET.

Come on, Breihan. I thought you were better than this.

Posted by: Encyclopedia Black at March 18, 2008 3:27 PM

Wow.... I never expected such analyzes of rap... you guys are idiots... The song is another hit.. nothing more nothing less. get off his nuts. Find what you like and listen to it.

Posted by: steme at March 18, 2008 4:42 PM

Steme- oddly enough, people actually like to discuss music and other forms of pop culture. (I know, weird, right?) Sometimes, they do it on the Internet. (even weirder) And sometimes, (gasp) people read it. Thanks for the insults. Good luck w/English.

I think I figured out Lil Wayne's formula: 2 parts Jay-Z's lyrical acuity. (which he still lacks.) 1 cup of Andre 3000's left-brain/freewheeling "out there" style. (failed again) Don't forget to mix in some gang affiliation. Who joins a gang in their 20s?

Someone already hit up wikipedia about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lollipop_%28Lil_Wayne_song%29

Posted by: Encyclopedia Black at March 18, 2008 6:42 PM

"Birthday Girl" is hot garbage. i'm convinced at this point that trAy just praises/disses select rap for the sake of being contrarian. c'mon now.

take away all the talk about "ironic humor" or whatever, and it's just a fun song. think the people acting like this song is some kind of plague (which i'd differentiate from just not liking it) are just taking Wayne way too seriously.

Posted by: Trey Stone at March 18, 2008 7:01 PM

I don't like Birthday Girl, but I have my own theory behind its motives. Lollipop has nothing substantial about it. Call it a head of lettuce single. I also liked Drunk And Hot Girls. Guess I'm just a sucker for a well written song.

Posted by: Encyclopedia Black at March 18, 2008 7:48 PM

Some songs are so awful they defy explanation within context, this is such a song. It's just bad, period.

Posted by: Jason at March 18, 2008 8:16 PM

i dunno. it's true that it's not much of a song as far as Wayne himself goes (i think the beat's nice though) but i think it just works for him. it's funny and consistent with the whole off-kilter persona he's been developing on his mixtapes lately, like brandon pointed out.

also just as far as Doc's earlier point goes, i don't think anyone's arguing that Wayne's the first rapper to have weirdo tendencies or whatever, just that he can be entertaining. saying "well ODB did such and such first" isn't really an argument.

Posted by: Trey Stone at March 18, 2008 8:54 PM

People who like "Drunk and hot girls" but hate on "Lollipop" should be lined up and shot.

Posted by: Jef at March 19, 2008 12:09 AM

Drunk and Hot Girls and Lollipop are both equally terrible there just those types of songs that bring down an entire album where even something like flashing lights can't save it. You would never Catch songs like those on
Late Registration or Tha Carter II

Posted by: Anthony at March 19, 2008 12:29 AM

i was gonna say something in favor of "Drunk and Hot Girls" but i wasn't sure whether that was a typo and EB meant to say he didn't like it. in any case it's a work of impeccable genius and i will not stand to see its reputation being dragged down any further

Posted by: Trey Stone at March 19, 2008 12:36 AM

'Late Registration' has it's own 'Drunk N Hot Girls': 'Celebration',

Posted by: brandonsoderberg at March 19, 2008 4:13 AM

Wooh, wooh, wooh, i think you guys are blowing this song out of proportion. I been listening to all of what wayne has put out, and i wouldnt say he is going commercial. maybe this song is commercial but i believe he made it because..... he can. 1 song out of 300+ being pop-py doesn't mean he is definitely heading in that direction. Someone said: He has no other direction to go in? and proof of this is that his album is out? i disagree. its not like he just disappeared "in the lab" trying to scratch somehthing together he is putting out mixtapes and killing it!why so many.... money. period. his album, he is in no rush, i believe he wants to create something crazy, the best, to do that the smartest thing to do is take your time. he can afford this unlike other rappers because.... of his mixtape: they keep him on top, and fresh on everyones mind.

Posted by: Doyle at March 19, 2008 10:04 AM

I said this elsewhere, but I really don't understand why anyone associates Wayne with "selling out" - as in, what is there to sell out? What exactly is he giving up in capitulation? not to criticize him unduly but Wayne IS a mainstream commercial rapper, all fantasies projected onto him by a certain segment of rap critics aside. I don't really care about dude one way or the other but as far as artistic integrity it's not like we're talking about The freaking Coup here, you know?

As for the song, I think it's effing terrible, but it's obviously not targeted at me. For the record "Birthday Girl" is equally bad if not worse, though if it's the sacrifice The Roots need to make to appease the commercial gods in order to put out an album full of "Get Busy"-type joints then more power to them.

Since rap fans have collectively smothered themselves on top of Wayne's nuts, I've tried to listen to him with a more open mind. But I'm sorry--I don't see his "weirdness" as any type of a valid defense for when his punchlines fall flat, and truth is, he fails to elicit any type of major response from me. I think he's more lyrically equipped than 90% of the rappers on the radio, but that isn't saying much, if anything. After listening to Drought 3, I had to go back to the grandoise storytelling of Nas' "Undying Love" in order to remember what real lyricism is all about. One thing's for sure--when Wayne declares "I'm so high, I could eat a star", I honestly believe him.

The beat to the song is dope, but the actual lyrics are trash. Not what I expected from Wayne's first single. I understand what he's trying to do by "steppin up to that next level" and making a club banger, but he could have at least made it one worth listening to as well. T-Pain's Buy u a drink is exactly that, as it is demonstrates both a catchy club beat and the lyrics to match. Regardless of the lyrics, its still a decent song but he def. needs to step it up in his next single if he's making the claim to be the best rapper alive. As for the video, that is no stretch hummer, that is a stretch semi! Sick as fu*ck.

Wayne is the movement. agreed, all his shit isnt crazy, some lines do fall flat. still the number of songs that are good heavily out weigh the bad ones. as for flow, he can match any beat, he knows this, so he goes around and spits over anyone's stuff. you dont see anyone else doing that... cause they probably cant. na..... but you know what is the funniest shit! this is for you, whomever it was that said he doesnt get it, why is everyone talking about him?
everyone, everyone has heard "i am the best rapper alive" is that funny? nope, the funny thing is that no one, no one, not one rapper has come out and said "what? i am the best!!" no rapper right now wants to be compared to wayne. therefore no one should deny he is killing it right now.

Posted by: Doyle at March 20, 2008 1:21 PM

r u fuckin serious, you came at lil wayne...the reason he put the song out as a single to let u know he can do exactly wat these none rappers do and make a hit, you dont talk about that annoying lil ass boi SOULIJAH BOI, u dont talk about dat improper speech high yellow ass YUNG BIRD u dont talk about people dat actually base there so called hits off of a bunch of nothing but u come at the BEST RAPPER ALIVE SINCE THE BEST RAPPER RETIRED.....he put out mixtape after mixtape that has got over the limit of feed back from fans and even from you hatin ass wayne lovers lol i like how u can create your 1st paragraph based on his 1st single which i might add is getting crazy playback on the radio stations where do you be at? further more wayne takes risks something most rappers are scared 2 do he is very talented and lyrically blessed so jus watch him do wat he do lol

If you all found out Lil Wayne was a big fan of punctuation, would you use it?

Posted by: Encyclopedia Black at March 20, 2008 4:33 PM

Encyclopedia Black: That was incredible. If your comment was on YouTube, it would be all over the place! You just supplexed them into the wedding cake!

Moving on to the topics at hand...

RE: "Drunk and Hot Girls," some people aren't going to like that because it goes so far beyond hip hop and I respect that. I've been clowning Mos Def since Monster's Ball, but his contribution is spot-on. The "Rahrahrahrah, that's-how-the-fcuk-you-sound..." is classic. Kanye's buzzed and horny, impatient vibe is ABSOLUTELY spot on, and this song kills when you play it loud. If you don't like it, skip it. I'll play this song a million times before I ever want to hear Chris Martin singing about fireworks over Lake Michigan, let's put it like that...

RE: Lil Wayne, I look at this two ways.

1) First, try to look at any song or album independent of who the person/group is... I've heard people make this point about The Rolling Stones and Pearl Jam on their last albums and I think it fits: If some band you never heard of made any of the last four Pearl Jam albums, people would've been going crazy. If some guy you never heard of made Graduation or Kingdom Come, people would've been knockin' each other out to get it.

But you look at it in context of the person, and people want to say "Kanye fell off. Eddie Vedder fell off. Jay-Z is washed up." And then American Gangster comes out and the only thing falling is people's jaws. "So and so only sold half of what he usually sells in the first week." And then the tour goes on sale and the shit sells out in ten minutes.

The internet is a sucker's bet. It's anybody's moment to backlash and hate and claim somebody fell off. The greats don't usually fall off. Everything can't be a smash. Sometimes you put something out there that you believe in and it's Michael Jordan wearing the "45" rather than the "23".

Put all that in a pot, and that's my first point: Sometimes a thing is what the thing is. Michelangelo probably painted some garbage that he almost threw away and somebody said "Yo, I'll hang that up...".

2) You can look at anybody's catalogue and find something that stands out as being completely eccentric by comparison to any other thing in their catalogue. But some shit is just truly weird on its own merits as compared to just about anything else. And saying "ODB was weird first" is kinda retarded and irrelevant. Jimi Hendrix didn't make Ben Harper start sucking. Ben Harper started dating Jack Johnson and THAT's what made Ben Harper start sucking. There's a difference between being weird for weird's sake and being weird because you're legitimately weird. Don't waste your time asking why Lil Wayne is weird. Ask yourself why DMX is weird.

And then ask yourself when the next Gangsta N.I.P. album is coming out...

Where do I go to get my parking validated?

Posted by: Stacks at March 23, 2008 5:28 PM

What about the song " The Carter" or "Go DJ"? Hes just puttin' a club hit in the middle of an album. "Grown Man" from Carter II was just like this(and all my lady friends love it), that's just his versatiity showing, all these mutherfuckers that complained about this song will have a copy of this album playing and will shit their pants and trip out on his 'walkin on Mars' raps, they would ride his dick if he asked.

Posted by: Adm Washbrn at March 23, 2008 10:15 PM

What a dumb article. Leave it to a pompous Village Voice writer to try and make something into much more than it actually is. It's just a crappy pop song, nothing more nothing less

Posted by: wtf at March 24, 2008 12:11 PM

This song may be interesting from a fans standpoint because he is going out of his safety zone and that is admirable. However this is not a good song. The beat is boring and much too slow to keep up with the Vegas theme of the video. He is half rapping half singing and neither of them is very good. Duffle bag was good because he only hit up the chorus and the track itself was so layered and big that it hid his vocal deficiencies. He should have hit up another guest spot with someone who had a much more energetic track thus continuing to build the mystic of the Weezy crooner.

I think wayne's suffering from a little split personality. To people ignorant of his mixtapes (commercial audience), hes just that hot boy dude that makes a million guest appearances. Nobody refers to those spots as proof of his skill. But then you got his mixtapes which are straight fire. This single seems to be the former (still alright, expected more but the bar is high), and maybe that's why the delays on the album proper, cause he's still figuring out how to reconcile the two.

Posted by: Jimmy at March 30, 2008 12:36 AM

i love this lollipop song only 'cuz weezy sings it. i luv him and his sexy ass voice. he is so fine and hot he has a great body!! n cute dreads, just how i like em ;)

My problem w/ the whole Lil' Wayne phenomenon is that its just too predictable.

Young black boy gets into the limelight of American entertainment industry at an early age, coming from a lets just say a bit unprivilidged background, getting into questionable company, goes through all kinds of things, and of top of all that basically comes out as a drug addict - and if I'm correct, but it might have been one of the other Hot Boys and even if I'm wrong on this one, it doesn't takes or gives a whole lot - not for the 1st time.

As himself, his music changes dramatically during the process.

But somehow its just too predictable. The indusrty changes, but he adobts better than good.

But - and I think a lot of us agrees on this one - the last 3 years have been quite calculabe...

I think lil wayne is an addict who makes addict music. I've never heard a thought provoking song from dude. Yes "Lollipop" the dedication to Dad "Bird brain" is getting plenty spins. Dude is not the greatest rapper alive, he's hot for the moment. Yall act like Jay-Z "American Gangster" wasnt that sh!t. Please Lil Wayne might be the hottest rapper alive in New Orleans. But be for real, he's not the greatest rapper alive.
