Ranking American Idol's Top Twelve

Posted by Tom Breihan at 2:29 PM, March 7, 2008

I mean, if people keep reading these things...

Well, those first intensive rounds of deadwood-clearing are done, and I'm sorry to see a few of those contestants go (Asia'h Epperson, please come back). But now we're into the meat of the American Idol season, which means it's time to start forming emotional connections and then immediately forgetting those connections a couple of weeks after the season finale. This year we've got a truly weird roster, stacked with ringers and one-trick ponies and people who might not have made it past the audition rounds during previous seasons. And here they are, ranked from favorite to least. Keep in mind that this is my list and that I'm being entirely subjective; I have demonstrated exactly zero ability to predict what America might like.

1. Jason Castro. His "Hallelujah" was one of my favorite TV moments in recent memory, right up there with Namond's cameo on The Wire last week. And I like stoners. Stoners are, by and large, good dudes. The idea that one of them has infiltrated the upper ranks of America's favorite reality show and that he might actually win the thing makes me truly happy. If we couldn't have Josiah, at least we get this fool.

2. Chikeze. Two of the three songs he's done so far have been kinda-boring lite-soul ballads, but his take on Donny Hathaway's "I Believe to My Soul" last week was some serious old-school showmanship. Plus he's quick-witted enough to trade barbs with Simon Cowell without coming off like a deluded ass, and he carries himself like an actual human being rather than a stage-mannered mannequin. Once Idol gets deeper into the goofy theme-shows, he's only going to get better; I'm eager to see what he does when the inevitable disco show rolls around.

3. Ramiele Malubay. She still hasn't displayed much capability for anything beyond weepy ballads, but she slew that Dusty Springfield song during opening week, and she's got a huge voice that's going to kill once she figures out what to do with it. I get a very distinct Jordin Sparks vibe from her, which is a good thing. And she always blubbers uncontrollably whenever anyone else gets voted off, which I guess is nice.

4. David Cook. I don't, as a rule, like all the post-grunge grunters who have flooded the show's ranks in the wake of Bo Bice. But Cook seems to be having some fun playing that position, reworking songs rather than shooting for accuracy; this week's "Hello" was passionately hammy. I also like that he's a self-described word nerd, if only because that means he's not all that wrapped up in playing the rock-dude stereotype that so many past contestants have embraced wholeheartedly.

5. Kristy Lee Cook. For whatever reason, this year's roster is jammed with semi-pro ringers with industry connections and backgrounds that the show's producers tenaciously refuse to grant more than a passing acknowledgment. Of that lot, Cook is my favorite because she fucks up the most, if that even makes sense. She makes ill-advised choices and reaches way outside her comfort zone, just like the show's non-pro contestants, and that story she told this week about pretending to be a dog and riding her pet rats around on her back was borderline-disgusting. She embarrassed herself with soul songs she couldn't handle during the first two shows, but I really liked her take on Journey's "Faithfully" this week, and she might yet hit a powerful stride if she keeps vaguely countrying up soft-rock jams like that. For some reason, it's always fun to watch country singers on this show; they seem to roll with the punches better than anyone.

6. Brooke White. She's managed to stay in her lane (Starbucks-pop, in her case) better than almost any of the other contestants, which would mean more to me if I actually liked Starbucks-pop. I still have basically no idea whether she can actually sing.

7. David Archuleta. So his "Imagine" actually was a really nice moment, Eva Cassidy arrangement-bite or no. But his other two performances were totally unmemorable, and I haven't been able to shake the impression that he's a super-advanced robot specifically programmed to shoot sincerity-rays in all directions. Also, did you see the clip of all the top twelve contestants dancing at the end of last week's show? Archuleta was hopping up and down, and he looked like a gnome or a gremlin or some shit. It was scary.

8. Syesha Mercado. On the first live show of the season, Mercado and Asia'h Epperson both sang the hell out of a couple of bluesy old classic-rock jams, and I sort of instantly loved both of them. But in the shows after that, Epperson tried wailing a couple of huge songs by a couple of uber-diva types, pushing her voice as hard and far as she possibly could, while Mercado sleepwalked through a couple of lite-soul slow-jams that I can barely remember. Epperson was voted off last night, and Mercado remains. Fuck that. Also, she makes creepy baby noises.

9. David Hernandez. I wonder if this guy will get better tips back in Phoenix after the DJ announces him as American Idol's tenth runner-up. I hope so. He seems like a nice guy, and his "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" was pretty good. But I'd feel a lot worse about making stripped-it-down jokes if his backstory wasn't the most interesting thing about him.

10. Carly Smithson. She can sing. She can sing very well. She's also a living symbol of everything lame about this season. American Idol wouldn't be the top-rated TV show in the country if it was just a singing competition and nothing more. It's supposed to be an up-from-nothing story. This chick already had a serious shot and already fucked it up. If she wins, she show compromises its own existence. A Carly Smithson win would be to American Idol what Landry murdering that guy was to Friday Night Lights.

11. Amanda Overmyer.
What I said earlier about embracing and playing up rocker stereotypes? That's this chick summed up completely. She's a cartoon character, and I've spent too much time watching Rock Star: Supernova to ever waste any more brainpower paying attention to clowns like this one. Her "I Hate Myself for Loving You" was pretty good and all, but I still found myself irrationally hating it. That's probably going to keep happening until she finally disappears.

12. Michael Johns. This guy would've made my shitlist if he sang "Light My Fire" once. He sang it twice. Also, if you play tennis, you can't call yourself a jock. You just can't.

What is so good about David Archuleta?!?!?!? I don't really watch american idol so can somebody tell me what is going on?

Posted by: ASU at March 7, 2008 6:01 PM

Tom Breihan, you are an ass. Are you an intern because even the Voice can't be paying you for your myopia. Chikeze stinks and so do you.

Posted by: arggie at March 7, 2008 6:05 PM

first, I'm as crushed as you must be to read all these comments that the Castro kid is not a stoner. maybe he should take it up, I don't watch the show but a high Jason Castro might just be the first and last person I'd experiment with in college, you know?

and on the tennis note, one of my good buddies was Varsity in high school and he even described himself as "a kid with a joint in his back pocket swatting balls for his school's pride". but I would wager that our girl that had an overall record of like 115-0 in four years was almost a jock, sort of.

I can't believe Asia'h Epperson was voted off. What is wrong with America, are you all deaf????
You'll be the first ones to run to buy her CD when she comes back and makes it big. She is an amazing singer, I can't understand why she was voted off.
I wish her all the best.

Posted by: Jayh at March 7, 2008 7:13 PM

would be great if its ramiele malubay and david archuleta in the finals!

Posted by: idolwannabe at March 7, 2008 7:13 PM

I totally agree with you about Jason Castro. I love him. But Chikezie? Come on... I'd list em like this:
1. Jason Castro 2. David Cook 3. Syesha Mercado 4. David Archuleta 5. Ramiele Malubay 6. Carly Smithson 7. Michael Johns 8. Brooke White 9. David Hernandez 10. Amanda Overmeyer 11. Chikezie 12. Kristy Lee Cook

I think David Archuleta should be much higher up. He has a great voice and he is genuniely a nice kid. Some people are just really nice and sincere. It's sad that when people see others act like this they think it's kinda weird.

Posted by: KK at March 7, 2008 10:31 PM

Your ranking is almost backward from my ranking, but I do agree that Chikezie is a very talented singer. He is not my favorite, but he is very good. I too am favoring David A. and have been impressed with Carly Smithson. We all have different musical style preferences, and yours and mine are about as different as night and day. Any polls I have been viewing are showing David A way ahead of all the others. Another good indicator of how popular a candidate might is the number of messages posted on their American Idol message board. David A. has over 1000 messages, and most of them are very positive. He has about 5 times more postings than the next most popular contestant. Many of the contestants have fewer than 100 postings.

Posted by: Kevin at March 7, 2008 11:45 PM

Carly is very talented and very professional. She should make the top 4. Sayesha's voice is very powerful and she stays in tune, so she too deserves a place at the top. It's important to have good vocals, have the look, and to have personality, a powerful voice, and to be original. The girl who sings country is talented if not she wouldn't make it this far. Amanda Overmyer is very good too, as she has her own style, and doesn't imitate anybody.

Of the men David Cook is original. I admired his version of Hello to the accompaniment of his guitar.

Posted by: J at March 7, 2008 11:51 PM

Your ranking is pretty much exactly what mine is. Jason Castro tops my list, you summed up the case against Carly perfectly, I couldn't agree more about Amanda and Michael Johns, and David Archuleta may well win the damn thing, but he's getting very grating very quickly. Watch him during the group performances -- he has no stage presence whatsoever. And in the solos, they rely on close shots because he can't command the stage. I wish he'd lose the goofy grin already and not half whisper everything he says in conversation.

Posted by: C at March 8, 2008 12:58 AM

David Archuleta is FAKE!!!! He is way rehearsed. He is a good singer, but the sweet humble personality is all an act.

Posted by: ME at March 8, 2008 1:44 AM

I love the way you secretly hide your adoration for David Archuleta by putting Chike-something (ahem, loser) on the second spot :)
Next time, be true to yourself. The odds of people truly not liking David A is about... errr... Actually, I doubt there's any chance anyone would not like David!

Hey I love watching American Idol over here in New Zealand eh. We've only just found out what the top 24 are. I have to say that young 16 year old boy is so good-looking. Sheash, if only he were 10 years older hehe. He has a very soothing sounding voice aswell. I really hope he does well because with a personality, looks and an awesome voice like his he deserves to be the next American Idol for sure eh. Take care...

Woops! Didn't think the first one sent ah-ha-ha! Now this is embarrasing...

Posted by: Fiona at March 8, 2008 4:55 AM

David A. is at the top of my list, FOLLOWED by Jason Castro and then David Cook.

I wonder if you've been following the commentary after the top 12 cast party. Most of the other contestants have mentioned David A's sincerity and brilliance.

Posted by: Kat at March 8, 2008 7:11 AM

High marks for giving both singer and arranger credit with regard to David Archuleta who sang an Eva Cassidy arrangement. Eva's strength was finding the emotional center of the song, no wonder Idol contestants have and will no doubt continue to use her genius. Still, David deserves kudos for pulling off one of Eva's always challenging vocal arrangements. Let's hope Eva at least gets acknowledged when it happens again.

For those not familiar with Eva Cassidy here is a photo montage set to her recording of "Over The Rainbow":

i have no doubt that david is gonna make it reallyyy far, most likely even win the whole thing.
and ya asia'h shouldn't have been voted off!! =(
i think syesha will make it far too..
Go David!!!!!

Posted by: Rebecca at March 8, 2008 8:13 AM

malubay? ramiele? no way!!! she wouldn't have even made it in the top 24 in previous cycles!! she's, as simon would say "forgettable" and without "the likeability factor"

Posted by: suzy at March 8, 2008 8:47 AM

I agree with arggie, Tom Breihan you are an ass.
What the hell is your problem? If the contestants are bad, you criticize them. If they are good you say bad things about them and call them fake. C'mon, make up your mind.
You must have lived a sad life where all the kids bullied you that's why it's hard for you to believe that David A. is a genuinely nice kid.
David Archuleta all the way.

Posted by: paul at March 8, 2008 9:54 AM

what the heck is ppls problem how could they vote danny off. go to the american idol web and you'll all see the positive comments about himm pile up by the minute. he should of won the whole thing!
I LOVE YOU DANNY

Posted by: Maria at March 8, 2008 1:00 PM

You seem jaded, why? Making fun of a 17 year old's sincerity is mean. Do you want him to turn out like Britney or Lindsay so you have more to write about?

Pick on someone your own size.

Maybe you are one of those jealous haters out there that don't like him for his popularity with the girls......Any way I believe he has a lot of potential in the music industry and NON-HATERS like you love him and will buy his CD....as soon as it comes out!!!!!!

When a good one comes along don't like him and call him a fake...I recently heard TMZ reporting David A. was being isolated by the other contestants...That's mean and immature so sad for some people you have to be like Amy "Whinehouse" to like you even ....maybe win a GRAMMY soooooo sad:-(
GO DAVID ARCHULETA!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!!!

yup, david a could win it. the kid sure has great vocals plus... It's very obvious he has studied the game. His looks and vocals are natural but Melinda Doolittle should sue him for copying her attitude. Just like Jordin did last year.

C'mon you can NOT be serious David Archuleta has the voice of an ANGEL and he is a wonderful influence to people everywhere. I am certain that he is 100% sincere, humble and kind and he is going to be an amazing role model to the rest of the world. David, stick to your values, don't let anyone tear you down, and keep on shining!!

Posted by: Mormon girl8 at March 9, 2008 3:43 PM

Bo Bice was not a grunge rocker. He was southern fried rock. Now he's doing southern gospel rock. David Cook is nothing at all like Bo. If you must compare he is more like Daughtry, who is more like Nickelback.

Posted by: at March 9, 2008 6:35 PM

I agree. I hope David can be strong enough not to listen to all of you cynical bitchy writers. There will be a lot of that for him because he is going to win!!!!

Posted by: at March 9, 2008 6:38 PM

I love jason castro. love him. but unless there's a definition of "stoner" that i'm unaware of, then i believe that you are mistaken by his character. he's a really good guy ... and he can be deep and mellow w/o being a stoner. i do agree with you that he is #1. he's the only reason i watch american idol.

Posted by: LB at March 9, 2008 7:08 PM

This is a response to a "senior editor" from (TV guide?) bagging on Archuleta's chances:

Oscar seems to have convienently foregone a lot (and a senior writer at that!)of his research when postulating about the "Imagine verse" conspiracy of Archuleta's performance of that song -- as, had the editor dug deeper, he would have found that Archuleta had sung the very same song earlier in his pre-teen years on television -- without eliminating nary a lyric. Seems as if there was any time to be leery of editing verses it would have been at that impressionable age to that impressionable audience (with local Utah affiliates there covering as well). So your theory doesn't hold water. Time is short for performances on AI show to accomodate the ad barrage (as well all know - you can fit a half another program in during the breaks) so truncated versions of the songs are the norm.

It's funny the supposed "backlash" against this clearly sweet natured young singer...and it may even be argued that he was coached to "throw" his Phil Collins follow-up to better "pace" his meteroic rise and deflate the hysteria after Imagine. That musta been tough to do. Kudo's just for that.

Also notice how the Archuleta haters are mostly hetero men? Seems they just can't stomach the massive female (and general) attention directed this charmer's way. And even the final 12 contestants - almost to a (wo)man - validate the veracity of his good nature - and bear him no grudge - with some even joking they're all just now participating on the "David Archuleta Show". And this said without a whiff of malice...

Doesn't sound like a phony could cull such unspiteful praise in such a competeitive enviornment.

It also could just be the simple, pure joy he feels and by extension shares - which is igniting his stock. Exec's are lining up in this town for that kid, since there hasn't been someone so young and so demographically demoilshing in their appeal across all groups in a long time.

And his lack of pretense in a pretense-adoring town.

That kind of appeal won't wane, not even over time. He's safe, and as good as gold.

BTW, using Daughtery as an example of people just not voting b/c they just assumed he would coast isn't really accurate. I think it had a lot to do that night with him talking about his underwear choices. Male rock fans of him probably blanched and ran for the hills. Daughtery's sly, smug self-absorbed winky smiling and posturing over the boxers or briefs question was a dragon slayer. Hubris

Well, there will be no such diversionary hubris or schtick with this guy. The volume, attention, and mass literal hysteria Archuleta is generating conjures up the Beatles and the frenzy of that band.

So there will be no complacency. I hope he just belts it out week after week without being "handled" to tone it down.

So, you feeling left out male haters, join the bandwagon - or be steamrolled by it. He's just begun!

R.J.

I fail to comprehend the questioning towards the genuinity of certain contestants' personae (i.e. Amanda Overmyer, David Archuleta, David Cook).
You never know; these people might not be putting on a fake front. And why would they? To pursuit the direction of their dreams, carry out proof of vocal skills, personae, and bravery to their loving inspired aired on television, and then when it's all over, stab America in the back? O_O Seems like a lot of work to go through to me.
I think your opinions of ranking the top 12 was very interesting. Jason Castro is my absolute favorite, Ramiele is sweet, and I can sort of see your views on some of the contestants refleced on them (Carly Smithson, David Cook, Michael Johns).
It's very sad though, that the contestants are being scoured of all clarity in their motives of their publicity, and succient gossip about them are posted boldly alongside stories about Britney Spears, the Hilton sisters, Anna Nicole Smith's family, etc. American Idol actually has a pure motive in this business, and it's pathetic how media has nothing better to use with their resources than to forcibly peer into their privacy, stir calamity within them, and basically just screw up the untainted goal they struggle to strive for. Very pathetic indeed.
. . . I'm done. (Finally, huh?) ^ . ^

Chikeze is annoying on so many levels and to me not deserving to finish high. None of the girls are really any good, but Brooke's "Starbucks pop"..WTF joni mitchell and carly simon is good music for that era.

I'm with John (March 8, 2008 1:30 PM):

Pick on someone your own size, Tom.

I don't ever see you talking about how Dirk Nowitzki or Kevin Garnett can't sing. Always dissing the short people... I've had enough. ENOUGH!!!

Also, Amanda Overmeyer is awful and Archuleta is one of the worst safeties in the NFL.

Please stop writing so much about American Idol. You may be getting tons of hits for doing it, but reaching out to the interests of the popular public is pathetic. Please tell us something we don't know about.

Whenever this happens in the comments, I really, really hope everyone doing the drive-by drops in on the likes of the Bun B or Killer Mike interviews after they're done.

It's quite possible not to enjoy David A.s singing even though he can carry a tune quite well. He worries me every time he has trouble with his breathing. I think he needs a long rest from singing and it looks like he was never allowed that chance. I feel more at ease listening to a singer who has strong lungs and will be fit enough to tour for the next year.

Asia’h Epperson:gone forever, thank God! Can't sing a lick.Worst diction singing or speaking in Idol history.Got as far as she did on the coattails of her father's death 2 days before auditions. Talk about priorities. Just repulsive.
