American Idol Week Eleven: Saying Goodbye to Jason Castro

Posted by Tom Breihan at 3:02 PM, May 8, 2008

jason-castro.jpg
He hopes you like jammin' too

I'm going to miss Jason Castro. I'm not going to miss him because he was a particularly great American Idol contestant or anything; in retrospect, he was a pretty terrible fit for the show's ballad-hawking chops-intensive blueprint. In terms of pure vocal skill, Castro couldn't come anywhere near any of the other serious contenders this season. He had no particular range, cooing everything in a near-whisper and never letting loose with the big crashing song-ending notes that have long been the show's money-shot moments. As a performer, he rarely ventured out from behind his guitar, awkwardly bobbing across the stage whenever he wasn't parked on a stool. And he showed no real acumen for the show's PR-hustle element, famously telling Entertainment Weekly that he didn't especially care how long he lasted on the show. But that last point is actually what made Castro a fascinating figure in an otherwise near-unwatchable season. I can't think of a single other contestant in American Idol history who so visibly disdained the whole structure of the show.

Last year, Blake Lewis would occasionally chafe at the show's formal constraints, but he was still transparently trying to win the damn thing. There's been speculation that Castro was actually self-consciously trying to torpedo his own chances on Tuesday night. (Apparently he mouthed "don't call" at the camera when Seacrest read off his call-in number? I missed it.) Throughout the season, he's kept the same blunted, bemused smile, happily shrugging off whatever feedback he got from the judges, good or bad. He never once seriously attempted to adjust his style for the different theme-weeks, always the biggest litmus test for Idol hopefuls (though the same charge could be leveled at most of the contestants in this niche-heavy bottom-dwelling season). And he never pulled any of the riotously cynical vote-grubbing tricks that his fellow contenders relied on so heavily, never grabbed blindly at heartstrings or belted out a patriotic chest-thumper just because. In his absolute lack of respect for the dictates of the show, Castro actually jerked the curtain back hard, revealing the manipulative thrashing of the enterprise for what it was. Next to his beatific grin, the test-marketed stage-kid trickery of the other candidates couldn't help but seem soulless. As long as Castro was on the show, it somehow felt like one of us had made it through, like someone as deeply suspicious of the unstoppable ratings-machine had snuck past the gatekeepers and was working to bring it down from the inside. No wonder the judges were so eager to see him celebrated home.

Castro certainly has a career waiting for him once he extricates himself from American Idol; jammy dorm-room stoner-folk is, after all, one of the few remaining music-business strongholds where there's still money to be made. But I can just as easily imagine him saying fuck it and shrugging off all the effort that would doubtless be involved. Either way, I don't have a whole lot of further use for the guy, and I can't imagine him making an album that I'd actually pay money to hear. Despite a few magical moments on the show (obligatory "Hallelujah" reference goes here), he faded firmly into the background most of the time, coasting by on pleasant but lifeless performances week after week. For all the bile he heard from the judging table, Tuesday night's show was actually fairly typical for Castro in that respect. The exceedingly goofy version of "I Shot the Sheriff" that he mugged his way through certainly wasn't anything I'll ever need to hear again, but it was no less defensible than David Cook's yowly "Hungry Like the Wolf." And even if the lyric-flub in his take on "Mr. Tambourine Man" was pretty glaring (how hard is it to remember "jingle jangle morning"?), his pared-down version was, I thought, one of the night's stronger moments. The judges and producers might be breathing easier now that he's gone (their anti-Castro campaign over the past couple of weeks was some serious Bay of Pigs shit, Paula gaffe and all), the show is going to be a whole lot less interesting now that we're left with three effortfully bland paragons of naked careerism. At this point, I really can't root for anyone.

That said, Tuesday night actually might've been my favorite of the season. The show's concept, a run-through of some of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs That Changed the Universe Forever or whatever, was a canon-enforcing boomer-pander on the level of those two endless Beatles tribute shows, but everyone picked at least one great song and actually did it justice. Cook might've shanked "Hungry Like the Wolf," but I liked his smoothed-out "Baba O'Reilly." I missed the synth-arpeggios, and Cook is no Daltry, but the big moments from that song never fail to thrill in any context. Syesha Mercado's take on "Proud Mary" was competently obvious, and I flinched hard whenever she tried to equate the civil-rights movement with her own struggle to become a famous singer, but her "A Change is Gonna Come" actually did move me. Surprisingly enough, though, I thought the strongest performer of the night was the demonically grinning lizard-child David Archuleta, even if I do generally hate the kid. He sang two elegant, simple renditions of two elegant, simple old songs, and he never got lost in his own vocal calisthenics the way he can on the Richard Marxist Jesus-jams he usually favors. For once, he looked something like a confident, nuanced performer instead of the steamrolling engine of pander that his creepy stage-dad has turned him into. I even liked the nod toward "Beautiful Girls" on "Stand By Me." I'm still dreading his near-inevitable win, but I have to hand it to the kid; he made his thing work this week.

AND THEN COMES THE FLOOD

Too bad Jason Castro is gone. On TV, his personality was fascinating. So obvious he just didn't give a f**k! And when it got too hard, he lost interest. Good for him!

The interesting thing is, this is the second time Jason has been kissed by the goddess of TV demicelebritude. He was the boyfriend on the reality show of a popstar wannabe named Cheyenne. Now there was a paragon of naked careerism!

A true Millenial, Jason is so immersed in pop culture he can take or leave a ticket to 15 minutes of fame. The next train will be by in a half-hour anyway. And in his case, this may well be true. The camera loves him, though it's dubious he can act. The goddess with recruit him to do something. Maybe a perpetual participant in reality shows?

The weird thing about the final four is that only two of them really wanted to win. David C. has got to have second thoughts about being molded by the pop factory. The dramatic tension for the next episode: Will he throw it? And how? He's my favorite, maybe I'm fantasizing a rebellious streak in this nice boy from the Midwest.

David A. and AI deserve each other, his win would send him right to Vegas where he belongs and consign AI forever more to a cheeseball demographic. (Ow, his Love Me Tender was awful.) Irony is, the crown would be a genuine reward for Syesha.

I LOVE DAVID ARCHILETA SO F******MUCH HE BETTER F****** WIN OR I WILL BE F****** PISSES OFF I LOVE YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHH!

David Archuletta should be on the Disney Channel

Jason was the one reason I watched this season. He was so genuine in everything he did, and he was someone I could relate with. He was honest, and when he was having a hard time, or was nervous, we knew. I loved how goofy he was, plus he wasn't half bad to look at either ;)

It was shocking that Castro lasted as long as he did considering the super talents of Michael Johns and Carly Smithson were eliminated earlier. They were clearly the best performers; there's something wrong with the judging system.

I am sorry but there is NO REASON at all to hate someone so much like some of you are doing! Jason deserved to stay on longer b/c he was modest and quiet unlike some of the other! David Arch. Is TOO nice in some way.All he does is sing the same tunes, and smiles all the time! Now that Jason is gone hopefully David Cook will win! The reason that Jason didnt venture out from his guitat(and Brooke with the piano...etc) is because the judges told them NOT TOO! "blue eyed lashes" shouldve not left...he deserved to win! Be nice! Its just a show and its a POPULARITY Contest!!

Jason deserved to win b/c hardly anyone sings the style that he does and he tried his best...like someone said on here that when he was nervous and stuff he wasnt afraid to show it. David Arch. better not win because he is just too smiley and too nice in some way. If anyone David Cook should win since Jason cant now!

so many people worked hard to get on teh compettion , and this is a dream come true to a lot of people, yet castro didnt seem to bother, what a waste, someone else could be standing in his shoes living their dream...

Posted by: agnes at May 8, 2008 4:30 PM

"their anti-Castro campaign over the past couple of weeks was some serious Bay of Pigs shit"

Really Tom? Was that necessary? Anyway I like Castro more than I do Jack Johnson et al, but that's probably because in context he seemed great, whereas in actuality he's not really that good, just better than the others. His refusal to show off his voice was always better than say, Syesha stripping the rhythm from "change is gonna come" by holding notes too long, or both Davids just suffering from bitch-assness.

Posted by: Suckapunkin' at May 8, 2008 4:32 PM

There is something very lame about auditions for American Idol and the acting as if you don't care what happens, and the whole thing is a sham, etc. If you actually didn't care, you wouldn't enter. He was just a big phony. White guy with dreadlocks, who carries guitar around everywhere but can't play it. Totally lame.

I agree with the rest of you,, Im glad Jason is OUT. He never seemed really serious about the competition, and that smirkiy smile GOOD RIDDENS

David Archuleta makes every perfomance his best. His last performance was not a surprise. He is the only one that has been consistent in his delivering of his vocals. Like it or not. And please stop blaming his dad for your shortcomings and opinions. He appears to be a typical Dad of a 17 year old wanting to have his son do his best on each performance. After all he is a musician and so is David's mother who is a singer. Didn't your parents ever give you advice? (and I am sure they were not as talented as the Archuletas) Give this young man a lot of credit. He still has the best VOICE, is young, talented, humble and ok he needs more practice on stage delivery. But after all American Idol is a show where the "undiscovered" talent shows their talent. Cook has been part of many bands and needless to say has his own CD and had many live performances. He should not even be on that show, but nice to see him part of it. Syesha has acted and been part of some off broadway shows. So give this young man a big standing ovation for his talent, focus and who can resist that smile and innocent face. We need more David Archuleta's in the music business. A lot of us (older than 13 and younger than 50) would love to attend his concerts and make it a family gathering without worrying about the Freaks or rappers with their drug dealings going on, in a concert. They can go to David Cook's concert instead. Different strokes for different folks. This is the year for a Male Teen American Idol. Definitely more talented than Jordin Sparks who was 17 and a big girl with not much personality or stage presence and is doing just fine.
Vote for our next American role model Idol, David Archuleta and keep the negative comments to yourself. They do not matter. SORRY!!

Posted by: Marie at May 8, 2008 4:45 PM

Jason Castro was the most useless contestant on the show and for him to last this long?? Are you kidding me... no talent, awkward, no effort, forgetting lyrics... and AMERICA.... what the fuk were you guys thinking voting for this guy week in and week out... u guys SUCK @SS.
As for David Archileta... wow... sounds like a fukin' tard everytime he talks. Not bad, but definitely shouldn't win. Let's go Syesha or Cook!!

Posted by: VoiceofReason at May 8, 2008 4:46 PM

Jason was cute and I'm sure he will go far... but it was time for him to leave the show. David Cook and Syesha are the BEST! I am hoping one of them can WIN!
It seems this year is definately a popularity contest... Michael Johns was so good, and he got voted off, along with Carly! There has to be a better way of voting on this show for next year. The ratings have dropped, too. Good luck to David Cook!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: jonie at May 8, 2008 4:47 PM

I only watched the show cuz of Jason....he has a warm, rich, soft, wonderful voice...have you listened to his studio versions....Perfection....he WILL make a cd....and it will be wonderful...I'm glad he isn't on there anymore to be bashed for just being himself....he's the greatest...that boring show was damn lucky to have him....WE ALL WERE!

And what is up with the Disney Channel comments for some of the morons that are clueless and cannot relate of someone so young like David Archuleta who is talented at 17. Perhaps they cannot relate, because they have no talent now or when they were younger. Go develop a talent for yourself and crawl under some nasty gutter, which is where mean nasty people need to be and make nasty comments about people they do not know or can relate to. Can I remind some of you the Miley Cirus at 15 is already a millionaire? Geeeeeeeeez

Jason Castro was cute and he seemed like he really didn't care if he won or lost. I hope he does well in the future. David Cook is the BEST. David Archuleta seems too immature and isn't ready for all this "stardom"... I read in the mags that his Dad has really pushed him! I think he appeals to mostly the 10-13 year old girls!!! GO DAVID COOK!!!!!

Posted by: brittany at May 8, 2008 4:51 PM

You know, all of these somments about modesty and not showing off his voice, it just gets me. Makes me beleive that people are serioulsy tone def. People, IT IS A SINGING COMPETITION!!! If you can't sing, or don't want to show off your voice, then get the hell out! Seriously, when does modesty play into. SO WHAT! I'm modest, does that mean I should be on American Idol? Give me a break. Jason should've been gone a long time ago, and that's the truth. Do I think the final 3 contestants are worthy of their place, sure. The truel good singers were gone a long time ago though. But the 3 that are left are deserving of their place. It just disgusts me sometimes that everyone seems to be so naive to the fact that this is a singing competition. You know, for people, who can sing! It shouldn't be a popularity contest for looks, modesty, and above else, someone not willing to show off their voice. Show it off! That's what it is all about!

Posted by: at May 8, 2008 4:54 PM

some of you posting some nasty profanity here on these boards, just show how classless and ugly you are. Obviously not only you do not possess a talent, but lack on education. The only retards I see on these boards are the LOSERS! Why not go and stand in line with 300,000 people and let's see, if they pick you to be part of a show that is very picky and make it to the top 3. HAHAH. Maybe you did and you get rejected because you are the ones that are retards, needless to say Jealous and talentless? Mean people SUCK! Your opinion does not really matter anyway, because you have no power to sign any musical contracts or experience in hiring talent in the musical business.

Posted by: Sandra at May 8, 2008 4:55 PM

Ah, Jason is gone. Too bad. He was a breath of fresh air. He was influenced too much by the judges who often cannot tell unique talent from no talent. They are so inconsistent in their ravings about being original! First its "make the song yours and change the arrangement to be contemporary". Then its "you tried to change a song that can't be changed". Or "what were you thinking with that arrangement". Fact is, Jason can be a serious and terrific performer if he does the stuff he likes (Hallelujah, Over The Rainbow). They were more touching than any song this season..bar none! I will look for his first album and just hope he had sense enough to stay with what he does best and that he is managed by someone who will see to it he uses his God given talent as it works best for him. As for Simon and Randy, they are stuck in their own world and they can succeed that way so they will not change. Jason just doesn't fit in their world. Paula doesn't matter because liking everyone's version of everything takes away all credibility.

Posted by: Steve at May 8, 2008 4:57 PM

So sorry to see Jason Castro go. He was adorable. I sure hope David Cook wins. He is the best by far, and more mature than DAvid Archuletta. He's much too "smiley faced" all the time and seems phony and so surprised when he gets praises from the judges. The Judges have been harse lately. Hope they can mellow out. Syesha is adorable and can sing so well. Hope she can get a record contract! I wish her well !

Posted by: brooke at May 8, 2008 4:57 PM

David Cook sucks and I love rock and roll. He is a rocker wannabe! This is a show about people who were not established before (of course he is more experienced) Daughtry he is not so get over it. All he knows how to do very well is SHOUT at all of us. If that is what you like, get your ear plugs and please go to his concert. I prefer rockers that I can listen to with incredible vocals. Carly and Michael Johns got voted off early because...DAH they are not American. This is American Idol...remember. I would attend Michael Johns's concert before David Cook's. A lot better looking and needless to say not full of himself and MORE TALENTED.

Posted by: John at May 8, 2008 5:02 PM

I agree with what Sandra just said: about nasty profanity on these boards! Why do some of you need to write stuff like this? Mean people DO suck! I guess that's the way of the world nowdays. It's a sad place we live in.
I just wish this show could be a "singing contest" not a "popularity contest" with little teenie-bopper girls ages 8-13 doing most of the voting. Of course, they are going to vote for David Archulata, because he is so young and a teenie bopper himself. That's who they can relate to. This show needs to set an age boundry!!! More "grown up" singers. How about it????????

Posted by: jonie at May 8, 2008 5:03 PM

I THINK JASON PROBABLY DID WANT TO BE VOTED OFF, BUT NOT BECAUSE HE DOSEN'T CARE OR WANT A CAREER IN MUSIC. DON'T THE WINNER AND RUNNER UP HAVE TO MAKE AN ALBUM THAT AMERICAN IDOL WANTS THEM TO MAKE? HE WILL HAVE AN AMAZING SINGING CAREER AND NOW HE CAN DO THAT ON HIS OWN TERMS AND NOT HAVE TO COMPROMISE HIS SYTLE. HE WAS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR AND I WILL MISS SEEING AND HEARING HIM EACH WEEK. I WILL BUY HIS ALBUM!!!

Posted by: ANNIE C at May 8, 2008 5:04 PM

Folks, David Cook is more mature becaue HE IS OLDER...and already has been part of many bands and had CD's he should not be on American Idol...some of you are just sooooooooooo darn stupid. This is America we all vote for the ones we like. Get over it already. David Archuleta is going to win and be a very big recording artist. I guess if you do not like him you will not attend his concerts or buy his CD's NO PROBLEM. He already had over 18 million votes. And no I am not a teen but a 28 year old musician who appreciates and respects new and young talent. David Cook is just so full of himself (and he has not won anything yet, remember?)

Posted by: Al at May 8, 2008 5:07 PM

Oh how I wish Michael Johns and Carly were still on the show. They were the best! Why can't the American people vote for the best singers.......not the most popular ones? Jason Castro should have gone home before Michael Johns ! What a shocker that was! The producers of the show need to re-think everything before next season starts. This year hasn't been as good as in the past. I will still vote for David Cook! He's the best of these last three.........

Posted by: jenny at May 8, 2008 5:08 PM

It's just a tv show, People. It's not even equivalent to yucky politics, which at least affects our lives. It's entertainment.

Having said that, I enjoyed Jason, and I'll miss him. And if that little choir boy wins, that will be American Idol's problem, as he'll be another jordin sparks, and certainly not a Kelly or Carrie.

I think Jason was not as good in the finals as he had been in the audition rounds. Syeha can sing but comes across a bit fake at times and as for Archuleta, he has got a good voice but it does sound lyk e is sinin thru his nose. David cook shud win the thing i think out of all of dem e has got the star potential

Posted by: ady at May 8, 2008 5:10 PM

I agreed with most of your article about Jason. You are a little behind though, Jason has cleared up the "don't call" incident as you say, several times this morning. He said "Vote, Vote" not "Don't Vote". Carly also cleared up the idea that he was a stoner -not one. He sure took the angry media bashing the last 2 weeks in stride. Its almost like they were unable to get to him so everyone kept pressing on in, trying to break him and his fans. Maybe they succeeded on Tuesday, but I for one thought Jason was the best of the night! Lots more entertaining than Syesha and David A, that's for sure. Jason's unique character and willingness to be himself is what made me a huge fan. Personally, I love the way he sings. I'm not a big fan of perfect, loud belters. Bob Dylan and those like him are my types of singers. I thought Jason did a great job with Dylan's song. Sure it would have been better without the missing lyrics for sure, but cut him some slack..He experienced one of the harshest beatings I've ever seen on AI in Round 1. It shook him up. I just wish people would give him the respect he deserves and grace and understanding for his mistakes. We all make them. Its easy to judge behind a computer screen than to experience the intense pressure these guys have on them to perform in front of so many people. I admire Jason for the way he took AI on, being one of the most inexperienced contestants ever to grace the AI stage. I can't wait for his album. Try out his studio versions of his songs. They do show his range and are often much better than his live performances. If he can make me like "Memory", that says alot. Who downloads Broadway showtunes?! I am baffled by those who hate Jason. He is a laid back dude that wouldn't hurt anyone. What is up?! I applaud him for making this season one to remember and for making the Top 4. Go Jason!!

Excuse me? That is a terrible attitude! Okay everyone, if things ever get too hard, give up, don't try. It's the surefire path to success in life...

What this really is, is just another example of Jason Castro's laziness, and I don't know about anyone else, but I would rather see someone who tries and works hard to succeed!

Posted by: N at May 8, 2008 5:12 PM

Well, you say David Cook is OLDER, and that's good, because this contest should be for older folks. Not 16 or 17 year olds. They have alot of time in their future for these kinds of shows. I would NOT attend a David Archulatta concert, it would all be the same kind of songs the whole night long... slow, nasal-type songs! He needs to broaden his horizon and branch out if he wants to be famous. David Cook is NOT "full of himself" at all. He seems sincere and is going through alot of personal/family things now with his sick brother. Give him a break!

A breath of fresh air?? Mediocrity seems to be what a lot of people seem to be relating to on this board. Really, really sad. It's a singing competition people, give your head a shake!

I watched it from the other side of the pond, it get's here Thurdsdays.
I couldn't believe that the theme was Rock n Roll...there was hardly anything to get rocking to! All those earthy, productive years of new music summed up by Mr Tambourine Man and Love Me Tender when there was blood, guts and tears to experiment with...well it didn't go down well with this 71 year old. You can say all you like about folksy, devil-may-care Jason but he wasn't as cute as Tiny Tim and if he gets some change out of this then there goes the Universe. But that's just my personal opinion which nobody take any notice of.

This Archuleta being so young thing just cracks me up sometimes. Some of you are so close minded. Did you forget that Jordin Sparks was 17? Let me see, Diane Digarmo 16..I believe they are famous now. So are you telling me they are famous because the very young voted for them? Hmmmmm not sure you really know what you are talking about. Digarmo is singing on Broadway (I don't believe 8 year olds hang out there), and Jordin Sparks is the opening act for Alicia Keys...hmmmmm must be because they are young girls? Well maybe Disney did not want them either because they might have to deal with the teeange anorexia problems most of the teen girls face???something to think about. DAvid Archuleta is going to win this year. GET OVER IT. Don't like him turn the channel and watching Dancing with the Stars or better yet, Desperate Housewives...hehe

Posted by: Sam at May 8, 2008 5:14 PM

I agree with you, about Archuleta singing through his nose! But I disagree about Syesha coming across as "fake"... she is not fake. She's darling and such a good singer. I think she will go far, no matter what happens. David Cook gets MY vote!!!

Posted by: To: ady at May 8, 2008 5:19 PM

I liked Jason but I did agree with judges, last couple weeks there was something just not right, he had lost that special something. Im not too keen on Syesha, there are plenty of girls with voices like hers in the business and who are better, she uses the power notes too much and her lower notes are week, so over all sound screechy, the lower notes are most important to make the higher ones have that wow! factor. she should go. david Archuletta takes a song and makes it his own and sounds great, ok guys he has that smile all the time but be fair he is 17, damn! i be jumping about if i could do what he does. david cook is good but again he has lost some of that spark, again something not right. I wish Brooke was still in the race, there was just something special about her, ok her voice wasnt so strong as some, but listening to her with top down of the car on a summers day, perfect! David Archuletta to win as he matures he get even better, and will be around for a long time. From Uk guy.

Posted by: rogermit at May 8, 2008 5:19 PM

David Archuleta is the most respectful young man on the show. He deserves to win because of his talent and pure love for music. Any critics should accept the fact that he put out the best vocal, effort and entertainment last Tuesday. If you still say that he is fake, examine yourself, your ego and your own darkness. This kid can sing variety of genres. His two simple renditions, Stand by me, and Love me tender were beautifully rearranged. I see great future for him. By the time he reaches at 25, I can't even imagine the level of music he will produce.

Posted by: Abe at May 8, 2008 5:20 PM

The Choir Boy you are referring to is creepy to me. David Archuleta is a young man with Christian beliefs. SO WHAT? did you people forget that Carrie Underwood's biggest selling CD was about JESUS??? DAH and a teenager when she Won? If you have something against the Mormon religion too bad. This is America, we all have our own religious beliefs and values. Stop being so mean and call people names because you disagree with what their religious beliefes are. You should move to the Midle East or some other country where you get your tongue cut off for disagreeing with whatever their religious beliefs are. So typical American and needless to say, very STUPID. Just shows lack of education, knowledge and arrogance on your part. Sad for you.

I don't like David Archuleta, BUT I will not change the channel to watch Dancing with the Stars!!! I am voting for the other DAVID... COOK that is. He is much better than the youngster! That kid has to go back to finish high school first, then he can think about a career. And besides, Jordin Sparks seemed more mature at 17 last year, than D.A. does this year....... he's a little boy!!!!!

Posted by: to SAM at May 8, 2008 5:25 PM

OMG...of corse David Cook is more mature than David A he is in fact er.....OLDER!!!! An these are the people voting....God Help Us All

Posted by: brit at May 8, 2008 5:25 PM

I did not know that some of you vote for David Cook because you feel for him because of his sick brother. If he has such real problems, why be in this competition. Nobody is holding a gun to his head to stay there and endure his misfortunes. It is a talent show, not a Feel sorry for me show this week. How narrow minded some of you are. Pathetic!

Posted by: Sandra at May 8, 2008 5:26 PM

Jason has marketability all the way around. He looks good and has some sincerity in his approach. Many high-marketable and popular singers do not have decibal crashing voices. It remains to be seen what will happen. But I thought he had Charisma. What good is a terrific voice if nobody likes you or wants to look at you while you are performing.

Posted by: Musicmaid at May 8, 2008 5:30 PM

Jordin sparks was 17 and still in HIGH SCHOOL. What do you mean seemed more mature? Because she was fatter? You liked David Cook vote for him. Good for you. You seem to forget he had MORE VOTES in the last show about ROCK and ROLL than David Cook the ROCKER did? Hmmmmmmmmmm soon David Cook will be wearing eyeliner like all rockers do. What a man what a man????? or better yet. WORD NERD who admits that his biggest hobbies are sleeping, eating and doing crossword puzzles. He must be a lot of fun to be around. Might have to get your ear plugs he might BE SHOUTING at you all night. Go for it. VOTE for David Cook, the rest of us like the younger STARS (and no I am not 8 years old morons, but a 30 year old married woman) who votes every week for David A and yes many many times. :)

Another Thursday, another American Idol post, another pageview commission check for Tom from Village Voice Media.

I'm really going to miss these posts, and I don't even watch the show.

Posted by: bdb at May 8, 2008 5:35 PM

I agree with what Wendy said, DAvid Archuletta is CREEPY! He always acts "so surprised" when he gets a compliment! WHY does he act weird like that???????

Posted by: jenny at May 8, 2008 5:35 PM

I agree with some of you. Profanity is not needed ever! I am in my 60's - raised to respect other people.
As for talent - that is what this program is suppose to be about. I see contestants being oust - not for their talents but because of popularity. And I do agree that David C & Syesha should not be here. They are experienced singers... this show is for young people that are trying to win a talent show based on their ability to sing! David Archulata should win this out of the three that are left. He truly is still here because of his talent - not previous experience.... SOOOO make this a singing contest and support the ones that have no previous experience in acting or recordings, etc. They are the ones that deserve to win the American Idol. Maybe American Idol should have a contest for only those with experience like Syesha & David C. every other season so the other contestants that have entered will have a fighting chance. Brooke should still be in the contest and Jason should have been oust right in the beginning! The whole object of American Idol somehow has gotten off base.

Posted by: Elie at May 8, 2008 5:40 PM

I'm getting to the point where I'm kinda convinced that judging by the above comments, your American Idol posts open up some frightening portal to the seventh level of pop-culture Hell. There's definitely something to be said for that. You also have to wonder how many nasty farts Jason Castro's white-boy dreads probably soaked up during the course of their disgusting existence. White people should not have fucking dreadlocks. God help us all.

Posted by: panthro at May 8, 2008 5:43 PM

I agree with "Musicmaid", Jason has marketability all around! He will go far. I was sad to see him go last night, I loved his Bob Marley song, he's perfect for that. And Tamborine Man was good too. The judges were really harsh on him! Good Luck to Jason!

Posted by: jonie at May 8, 2008 5:43 PM

This is hardly breaking music news...the guy's got a good voice, but compared to everyone else he's in another league and at this point you should NOT be forgetting the lyrics. Ok lets not even mention the fact that he looks like he hasn't showered in a year...the dude is a slightly above average singer who should have been eliminated loooooooooooong ago.

Posted by: Hardly Breaking Music News at May 8, 2008 5:43 PM

To "Hardly Breaking Music News" ... have you forgotten that David Archata forgot his lyrics a few weeks ago? and so did Brooke? she had to stop the song and start over? Give Jason a break!
And I am sure he has showered recently, too!!!!

Posted by: jenny at May 8, 2008 5:50 PM

I think Paul Hewson summed it up better than anybody ever could've:

Back to the cold restless streets at night
I talk to myself about tomorrow night
Walls of white protest
A gravestone in name
Who is it now?
It's always the same

Who is it now?
Who calls me inside?
Are the leaves on the trees
Just living disguise
I walk sweet rain tragicomedy
I'll walk home again
to the street melody

But I know, oh no
But I know, oh no
But I know...

I'm going to miss Jason! He's original, and I really liked him. I hope he finds his place and has a lasting career. This is a great article. Thanks for writing it.

Posted by: Anne at May 8, 2008 6:18 PM

Jason didn't have the best voice. He'd be the first to tell you that. What he did have, and in spades, was joy and a passion for music. Not glory noting, grandstanding, or screeching. But music.

He brought more originality, better songs and more pure fun than this show ever had a right to.

AI tried to present him as, at best a dumb, lazy kid, and at worst a blight on all that holy in the music world. And yet, HE is responsible for Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah finally becoming a hit. While AI has been responsible for some of the best selling, most artistically devoid "music" ever created.

Go Figure.

Jason, I can wait for you to make a CD, but know I do it very, very impatiently.

Posted by: maggie at May 8, 2008 6:22 PM

Jason actually did not say dont call or dont vote, he actually said Vote Vote. He really wanted to win the whole thing. I just read an interview with him. He was my favorite person. He was just amazinggggg! But in a way I did not want him to win because he would have to be with american idol for like 3 years and they would change him into a "pop star", and I want him to be just JASON CASTRO THAT FUN LOVING LAID BACK GUY!...

Posted by: Sarah at May 8, 2008 6:24 PM

As for the dreads... They fit him perfectly!! He would not be jason castro without them! And he showers everyday. You do wash them with shampoo and water, its normal hair. It's like your hair being braided all the time. I will be waiting for his album, I cant wait!!!!

This comment post is why we need more Jasons in the world. Say what you have to say, be nice, respect others opinions and smile. We don't have to hate each other.

Also, it would help if AI would take the responsibility to FULLY explain EXACTLY what we should be judging and voting for. There are so many differing opinions that need clarifying. Only AI can set the record straight.

Is there a rule book on who can have dreads? (He's a Columbian white boy, btw.) And if you're not a white boy, is it alright for your dreads to soak up farts? I shudder to think of all the farts Crystal Gayle's hair has soaked up. What a stupid comment to make about a person who should be judged for his musical potential on a talent show.

So if you do not like David Archuleta don't vote for him. Don't worry though he gets enough votes every week from all age groups and if you don't think so, then you honestly have no proof or statistics that he only attracts 8 year olds from the Disney Channel. I believe I saw David Cook be asked for autographs from young 9 year old boys...hmmmm does that make him a perv then? This year this show has attracted so many age groups primarily because of David Archuleta. My grandfather in his 70's votes for him and everyone else in our family. Perhaps the older generation wants those old ballads back, the younger generation, loves their 17 year old role model adorable Archuleta who can sing to beautiful girls and then give them that great smile. So what? He is going to win, because he is so lovable and adorable and needless to say the VOICE to beat. Not a freak. Please we have enough freaks in this world already, do we need more Rocker freaks? Soon Carly will be tatooing things on his arms, to go with the shouting he is doing every week, bad hair dos and full of himself arrogance. Yuk, please run to the store now and buy his old CD's it was not selling well, he failed in the rock bands he has been part of and now he has competitors who are not as experienced as he is such as David Archuleta and Jason, who actually competed and got many many votes every week. Needless to say he is close to 10 years older than young David..we wonder why he is more mature looking? Vote for David Archuleta he is our new young American role model Idol. You might actually learn something from him, if you try. Here are a few things, talent, great voice, focus, humble attitude, stands in front of judges every week and accepts critism and works on improving himself, wants to be a winner NOT A LOSER, brushes off all the negative comments you people give him and soon he will be the new young millionnaire, because he has the IT FACTOR, which is called TALENT not wannabe rocker freaks.

Posted by: Loretta at May 8, 2008 10:45 PM

Can someone explain to me for the stupid people that comment about Archuleta singing through his nose? Where do you people come up with such stuff. Do you know how stupid you appear? How does one sing through their nose? All I can think of, you must be a real LOSER to think that a singer can actually sing through their nose! What have you been smoking or taking. Mean nasty people SUCK!

Love the article, as always. Funny that you mention Archie's creepy stage dad. I didn't find him so much creepy as I did a nearly perfect hybrid of Robert Deniro and Danny Bonnaducci. Just an observation. Not much to say about the ones who made it through to next week. Archie good, Syesha okay, David Cook was...uh...somewhere else and seemed not to care much. Jason Castro is a funny dude. I like him, but I'm glad that he's off now. HE is glad that he's off now. He has been praying for elimination for weeks now. It was funny when he said that someone said he shot the Tamborine Man and really gave himself away when he admitted that he didn't know WHAT he would do with three songs next week. Good kid, but not ready to sell his soul for rock-n-roll.
Honestly, I don't give a shit who wins. I am still thinking back to the beginning of this season when they said this was the best, most talented season ever. Bull-SHIT! And I swear, if they don't get rid of that stupid Idol Live crap, I'll puke. It is a ridiculous, awkward, and boring time filler.
But don't get me wrong. I will watch. Oh yes, I will watch every episode of every season

Posted by: myturn at May 9, 2008 12:16 AM

Man, these commenters are fucking retarded. I have no idea how you watch that crap Tom. I know 5 days a week is a heavy schedule, but there has to be some actual music you can write about. The snippet I saw of that dreadlocked douchebag butchering Mr. Tambourine Man was so awful he made me wish Dylan had never wrote it. I wish for Mr. Dreadlocks to catch the entire Hepatitis alphabet.

question for SAH regulars: do you, too, just skim through the insanity that inevitably follows these idol-related posts for the occasional, level-headed comment from someone else who actually is a fan of this blog (i.e. not a troll who fanatically google-searches "Americon Idol" all damn day)?

DITTO - I AGREE WITH MICHELLE JOHNSON

I WILL MISS HIM DEARLY. I DON'T KNOW IF I'LL WATCH NEXT WEEK. TOO BORING WITHOUT JASON.

Posted by: leach613 at May 9, 2008 10:18 AM

uh, starda?

sorry, but you're the stupid one. you obviously know nothing about singing. when one is "singing through their nose," they are letting a large amount of thier breath flow through their nasal passages, rather than out their mouth. yes, breath can actually go places other than out of your mouth. like when you're breathing out of your nose, for example. just as you can breathe through your nose, you can sing through your nose, and it's a pretty undesirable sound. it's probably hard for you to understand, but trust me.

Jason Castro is one of the most unique contestants ever to grace the American Idol stage. The Studio Versions of his songs are amazing which means a CD would be amazing, too!!!!! I honestly have no idea why the show decided to stage it's Anti-Castro smear campaign (which has been painfully obvious for the last several weeks!). He has the LARGEST fan base....people willing to go out right now and buy his CD in droves....People who are only planning to attend the AI Concert because of him....People who are no longer watching the show because he's gone. To me the producers didn't recognize "gold" when they had it and they cut off their nose to spite their face...WHY is the big question?

I absolutely loved jason castro, and i'll miss him, but i think he'll be fine whatever he decides to do. sometimes it seemed like he would rather just hang out with friends and be totally relaxed, but if he does put out an album i would definately buy it. DAVID COOK is my replacement choice, i'm pretty sure that anyone of the american idol back-up singers could do those "glory notes" just as well as Syesha. Is that really going to sell well? I don't see anything that makes her so special and talented. Most of the people who do well in the music industry don't do well because they have beautiful, perfect voices that sing big loud long notes OVER AND OVER AGAIN, but because they have someting special that actually makes people want to listen to them, that makes people interested. i think jason definately had that, and david cook does as well, though i don't find him as likeable as jason and my other favorites carly and micheal johns. I'll miss jason but he did mess up, and he seemed okay with going...

Jason was a great talent on Idol. A different talent. john Mayer, jack johnson, colbie calais, sarah bereiles...I could go on, all fall into his genre. He didn't need big notes and power belting. he obvious didn't fade much into the background because, hey, the kid made top 4. That is no small accomplishment. I will miss Jason alot. No one fresh left on the show. He really did make this season interesting. Along with Brooke. The rest were talented but nothing special.

Posted by: at May 9, 2008 10:42 PM

Oh pleaaseee. Its a frigging reality, stop busting your guts!!!!

Jason Castro deserved his 4th place spot and will do well in music. I've bought some of his studio versions and they were great.Good going for someone who doesnt have the experience some of the others do.He has his own style and will do great!

David Cook is great but he has 2 cds out, so what happened to the ideals of finding new talent. He is however great singer and I wish him the best

Archuleta has a great voice, but someone should lock up his dad to stop him hounding proceedings at FOX....remember Joe Jackson anybody and Michael?

Syesha Mercado! Forgettable.Lovely voice and she's worked hard so deserves her top 3 spot but is a cliche, watch her fade............

Brooke white???????Wallpaper..NEXT

Michael Johns and Carly..great singers, and Carly will do especially well in the music world.DO I regret them not making it to the final 4...NOPE,the 4 that did deserved their spot so Bite me!

Everyone else in the top 12........what were their names again???LOL!

In essence I'm glad Jason got to top 4 and find him very refreshing.Call me a dreadhead, I'm very proud!!!!And the Top 3 are all good guys, give the lot a break, vote for your favourite to win or switch channels already..LOL!!People here crack me up how emotional they get about these things.WHAT WILL BE WILL BE so deal with it...LOL!

He is really goodlooking, but you're 71 so why even make the comment at all, when you shouldnt be thiking such dirty thoughts about young boys!!!!LOL

I watched AI this year simply because of Castro. He was the only part of the show that interested me. From his unelievable version of "Daydream" during 60's week, to his beautiful and breathtaking takes on "Hallelujah" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", he truly was a breath of fresh air. I will not likely watch the show any further now that he's gone. And I truly agree with one blooger who duly noted that AI "cut off their hand just to spite their face" with their constant efforts to get rid of Castro. What I find sad is that now that he has been voted off, I've read many positive articles of Jason's originality, likeability factor and his unwillingness to drink the AI kool-aid. I only wish these positive articles had come out a bit earlier.

With Jason you either get him or you don't. I suspect that a lot of people who don't get him or has a strong negativity toward him subconsciously knows he is a unique talent. But throughout the years AI has brainwashed viewers what a 'talented' artist should be (big voice, pompous performance). So when people see a rare talent like Jason they could not reconcile it in AI's mold.

He is an anti-Idol and the AI producers knows that. It threatens their existence so they have to force him out by hook or by crook (mostly by crook).

I agree with many other posters. Jason Castro has an amazing voice, especially the studio versions. The problem with AI is forcing the contestants to sing songs that are not they're style or given them enough options. Do you really think making them all sing Mariah Carrey songs was going to showcase their talent? That was ridiculous and was done to promote Mariah. This should be about the contestants and they should have more input into the song selections.

I, like many others are looking forward to buying Jason's first CD. He is a crooner for this generation.

Listen to Jason's Studio Versions of his songs on i-Tunes. For sure that will change your opinion of his voice and range. Jason was the only Top 24 who consistently had perfect pitch, and with some vocal coaching (he's the only one of the Top 12 who hasn't released a CD or had vocal training) he will do great things with his voice. I've downloaded all his songs, including those he composed and performed himself, and play them all day, every day. I'm one of thousands of Dreadheads who has preregistered for his first CD.
Jason has the best chance out of all of this year's idols to make it big in the music industry. He is beautiful, inside and out, and although he didn't win American Idol, his loss makes the show the biggest loser in this fiasco of a season.

Jason didn't lose his interest in performing and he didn't ask to be sent home. He saw through the transparency of the producers and the show, and they couldn't have that; that's when the plan to crucify Jason began! Oh and for the record, I'm a 50 year old married mom of 2 and I won't be watching American Idol again once the Finale is over (unless Jason makes an appearance, which we all know isn't going to happen).

American Idol has lost its luster. We now know it misrepresents its intentions and sells its integrity for the sake of profit. What a surprise...NOT. Thanks for your article. Although I feel many of your comments on Jason are innaccurate, I agree that he was the best part of Idol this season.

Jason was the most entertaining contestant on AI hands down. His voice is rich and unique, he is very handsone, his personality left you chuckling, and he is a raw talent. He was able to compete very well with all of those qualities, enough to get to the top 4! He is the most genuine of the group which tells me that he is in this to stay even sans American Idol, maybe better without it. Somewhere out there a manager with a lot of savvy is probably scrambling to figure out how to get on his gravy train. Jason should be careful, he will need a good one, because he is just beginning, and with the right backing he will surpass the next American Idol. Remember, it is about expressing music as an artform, not always how loud you can sing....Think Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and yes, even Bob Marley. Jason will have his own sound and music and express it in his own artistic way, and we will all take notice, as many already have! It is exciting to be on the ground level watching him from the start. I have high expectations given his potential.

Thank God that sleazy wanna be a reggea rapper is gone. He looked completely filthy and was as goofy as they come. Is that really the best Texas A&M has to offer?

gotta say it: castro was good, but he didn't fit into the IDOL shell. Sad but true Jason is gone. oh well.

I sincerely believe that the finals will be between the two Davids' and as for last weeks show it looked like Cook was definately elsewhere. I like Cooks reditions of the songs he has sung in the past but not so much on May 6th show. He still as a 1 in 3 chance to move onto the finale next Tuesday.

Archuleta was NOT singing through his nose. I am a vocal musician and honestly when i hear people singing through their noses it makes me cringe and sick to my stomach. As this 17 year old "matures" he is going to be unbelieveable in his vocal performances. Hello: when you are singing you can't help but to sing through their noses a bit. sheesh folks. get over the fact that Archuleta is a good singer. He is amazing at 17. And for the "choir boy" comments . . . just because he is a GOOD kid, don't knock him for that, we need more GOOD kids as role models. My family will vote for him as will everyone i know. We need a good, humble, positive role model for our kids. Heaven knows we don't have any real great ones right now.

As for Ms. Mercado: she deserves to be on Broadway she is THAT talented. but to win AI . . things would have to swing totally the opposite direction as they are going for the to happen.

jason castro will be just fine. there is a place for him out there. martha reeves once said: "there's plenty of room at the top - the bottom is where it's crowded". i honestly don't think it matters who wins, as this is strictly a popularity contest - more than a couple of the contestants will get their chance regardless of how they rank. for those who keep showing their ignorance by talking about white boi 'dreads - here's a clue: jason is not a "white boi" - he is a colombian - american, & that kind of talk insults a zillion people several different ways...

Too bad I have NEVER heard of you before Tom Breihan...what are you some sort of American Idol expert?! Oh, no...wait...you're apparently an expert on everything. I can't believe that by simply clicking on a few words to describe a possible reason why Jason Castro could have been voted off the show, that I would somehow be directed to your "expert article" (that's sarcasm if you've never seen it before) on Idol, the contestants, music and future album success. Wow, what a waste of five minutes of my life actually reading your crap thinking that I may eventually find something worth reading. Who are you again? The blogger for Daily Voice, yea...you're definitely not the voice of America that's for sure. Considering America voted to keep Castro til last week and Syesha, and the two Davids are still there despite your rantings about them. Guess your fan base isn't very large there Paco, because no one is taking your advice when it comes to the voting.
I usually don't post anything in response to LAME articles that I read online, but in your case I had to do America and the Idol contestants justice and put someone who clearly feels threatened by conformity and jealous of true talent, in his place.

Our Laid Back Texas boy Jason. Love you and miss you on the show. You were a breathe of fresh air and those eyes, dreamy. This season was hard because all of the top ten were talented. Every week I could not make up my mind who to vote for, but Jason always got plenty of my votes. Now the top 3. Tho Syesha is very beautiful and talented, I believe it will be the 2 Davids at the finals. My money is on David Cook while my sister is a hugh David Archeletta fan. Good luck to you all. You all deserve a music contract at the end of this season. The most talent in one season I have ever seen. Love you all and thanks for an enjoyable time watching you belt out the tunes. Thanks.
