American Idol Week Thirteen: The Long-Awaited Battle of the Davids

Posted by Tom Breihan at 1:44 PM, May 21, 2008

cook%20archie.jpg
The end is near

"For me, this whole thing has been a progression," said David Cook last night, immediately after singing Collective Soul's "The World I Know," the third of his three songs last night. Which begs the question: Why am I rooting for the guy whose progression is ending with a damn Collective Soul song? Simon Cowell had told Cook he should've reprised one of the 80s pop songs he'd transformed into goopy buzz-bin leftovers, but Cook was evidently more interested in singing a song that really meant something to him. That's nice and all, but it'd be a whole lot nicer if the song that really meant something to him wasn't a character-free yarl-nugget that haunted alt-rock radio during its late-90s death-slide. In retrospect, I've mostly been pulling for Cook by default and because he's the contestant with whom I'd rather drink a beer. He's a smart, erudite, self-aware dude who's evidently spent some time in the everyday adult universe rather than a cringing, stammering child whose commandeering stage-dad has kept him on the reality-show circuit for half his life, but that says absolutely nothing about Cook's ability to make an album that I'd actually pay money to hear. David Cook will definitely release a major-label album sometime in the next year, and it might even sell, but it almost certainly won't be anything I'll want to hear. David Archuleta might represent everything that's wrong with this season of American Idol but there's at least some chance he'll turn into a more Jesused-up version of George Michael, which would be OK. I won't be paying to hear either of them, ever, but Archuleta has a marginally better chance of making a song that I won't hate when saturates radio. That won't make Archuleta's near-inevitable coronation tonight any less objectionable, but it might be a bit easier to take after that one shining insight.

I don't want to keep slamming this point into the ground too much, but this year has seen just about the shittiest, shadiest season of American Idol that I could possibly ever imagine. The judges have been in the tank for Archuleta the entire time, the cast has been loaded-down with major-label refugees and reality-show leftovers, and anyone who threatened to become interesting was singled out for elimination right quick. I can't blame so many viewers for turning away from the show this year; I would've done the same thing if I wasn't getting paid to write about it. It's not like anyone watching had any doubt about the final two contestants we'd see last night, but the show's goofy-ass boxing-match concept, Michael Buffer standing in for Seacrest during the intro and some boxing coach showing up repeatedly to spout cliches, would've never happened if Syesha Mercado had somehow miraculously made it past last week (though she really wouldn't have looked any less ridiculous in gloves and robe than Archuleta looked last night). This was all planned, and that's a gross mutation of the show's mission, which was crass enough at the outset. The show's producers had the brilliant idea to use the viewing audience to find a singer who those producers could then sell back to the viewers, a neat little feedback loop. But when those producers manipulate that audience into voting for a predetermined contestant, that loop becomes something resembling an arrow, and the show loses its whole reason for being.

All that said, David Archuleta was really good last night, even someone did dress him like a baby Russian gangster. He managed to scale back the melisma a bit on "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," a total MOR anthem. He also reprised "Imagine," the song that guaranteed his win way back at the beginning of the season, and he made it just as emptily pretty as he had back then. Cook, meanwhile, did just fine with "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "The World I Know," good songs both (I cant front), but neither had quite the rafter-swinging pull of the two Archuleta selections. That's weird, since Cook sure looked like a winner at the beginning of the show, poised and confident, while Archuleta looked like he wanted badly to crawl under his bed and cry. But Archuleta's spent basically his entire life in child-star boot-camp, and he knows how to bring it when he has to. When Simon Cowell repeatedly trumpeted Archuleta's superiority during last night's episode, he didn't even seem to be jerking us around, even if the other two judges did seem to be reading from a script. When Archuleta wins tonight, I won't be happy, but I'll understand.

I haven't mentioned either of the two songwriters'-contest winners, which Cook and Archuleta had to sing last night, mostly because they both sounded like end-credits music for C-grade 80s sports movies. American Idol really, really needs to get rid of that contest before next season. The show could stand to get rid of a few other things, too.

"American Idol"; just the title conjures up visions to me of a hot looking guy, who knows how to carry himself and dress the part of a rock star. David Archuleta can sing but he looks like a little 12 year old boy with that shy little facade. David Cook in all respects call fill the shoes of a true American Idol/Rock Star. If the little snot nose kid wins; I will never watch that stupid show again. Of course, I said that when Stoddard, who was 200 lbs overweight was even in the finals. He could sing but never ever fit the role of an American Idol. Another thing, I heard Simon comment on other people's weight and dress, why never Stoddard's?

Please, please let Archuleta win. He'll go into the Christian pop universe and with any luck we'll never hear from him again. Given that David Cook is "a smart, erudite, self-aware dude who's evidently spent some time in the everyday adult universe," let him have a second chance at developing a musical direction of his own other than being engulfed by the 19 Entertainment pop machine. It would be way too painful to see him doing Ford commercials. Looks like he figured out how to take a dive anyway.

Well, Tom, I must say that I agree with you on the jist of your article. However, I must mention that you obviously know nothing about Collective Sould. The guys of Collective Soul are among the best songwriters of the last two decades. I was particularly excited that David Cook chose "The World I Know" because it was an obvious smack the face for the Idol producers. That's what I love about Cook. He a freaking superstar and he knows it! David Archuletta is a product and he knows that too.

Posted by: ERIC at May 21, 2008 3:02 PM

Tom sounds so bitter. Get over it.
American Idol is a singing competition.
Not about how someone appears or looks like. If they can sing, the have the right to win. Simple as that! And Archuleta has proven that he can sing regardless of age and looks. Just stop being bitter and if you don't like the show, don't watch it. Like it's very American to bash people on the net. Yeah, way to go. Bottom line: Don't like the show, then change the channel. Thank you!

Posted by: RR at May 21, 2008 3:04 PM

Agree with Eric that Cook's choice of "The World I Know" "...was an obvious smack [in] the face for the Idol producers." He did the same thing last week with "Dare You to Move"-- the lyrics of the part he sang pretty much diss AI's concept of celebrity.

Posted by: crabpaws at May 21, 2008 3:17 PM

By the rules/votes it seems that DA will win. By the variety DC should win.
Why American Idol, is not using the total votes accumulated by each contestant?
That will be more real, than only the last 3 songs?
None of them will reach the hights of Kelly Clarkson and/or Carrie Underwood BUT with certainty will be much better than Taylor Hicks.

" I can't blame so many viewers for turning away from the show this year; I would've done the same thing if I wasn't getting paid to write about it. "

RR you must've missed that part. He's getting paid to write about it. And he's a music critic. Critics are allowed to be critical. Readers don't want 24394320 compliments about the singers. We want a critique. Get a clue.

Posted by: at May 21, 2008 3:33 PM

Wow, the guy that wrote this article is BITTER. He's also very cynical. Some people seem to hate Archuleta just because he's sweet, innocent, good looking and moral. Boy we are a cynical group, aren't we? Cook seems like a nice guy too, and he has the whole "rocker thing" down, but his voice is fairly average. I've taken singing classes and my sister is a classically trained singer, and GUESS WHAT, Archuleta has a better voice and technique. He's the BETTER SINGER. He OUTSANG Cook last night. He has an amazing voice for someone who is still a teen. Stop hating people just because they're sweet, attractive and innocent. One more thing, the writer of the article made a comment about how he thinks the judges have been pulling for Archuleta the whole thing. Umm...well...I've actually read that Simon thought Cook deserved to win and also that the producers were hoping Cook would win too. Now they may have changed their opinions after last night...But just wanted to clarify that for the writer of the article. That's all.

Posted by: Kristen at May 21, 2008 3:45 PM

archeleta may be the stronger singer, but he is not in the least bit interesting. every week when ryan asks him a question, he shrugs his shoulders and says the same thing. i can hear the moans now of talk show hosts when they have to interview him! he doesn't know who he is! he has no identity and has been shaped and coddled by his parents. he may be a singer, but he is not an artist. there's your difference. and anyone who bastardizes the lyrics of john lennon and uses them for their own gain, deserves to be criticized.

Posted by: xenya at May 21, 2008 4:01 PM

This show makes me cringe from beginning to end. Why anyone with genuine talent would audition is beyond my comprehension. Even when they're good they end up coming off as cheap chintzy sell outs. American Idol is as uniformly boring and fake as Cowell's teeth (hey, dude, you've got buckets of money, you could find a dentist who could make choppers better than that.)

Well, perhaps I'm jaded and just expect more than AI is will to give. I do like David Cook (but hate the hair and the gruffy face) although he's a bit of a mimic if other bands out there. What he did with Billy Jean was outstanding and that's what I always hope to see when I watch AI. The first couple of shows, I was a bit "smitten" with Archy but that quickly wore off when I noticed that each song sounded like the last one. That really got boring after a few shows. The thing that turned me off most about Archy is his pretend humbleness and fake emotional expressions. Archy looks like he is always on the verge of crying but you never see a tear. It is fake and it is breed into him by his over-bearing freaky father. I kind of feel sorry for Archy, he’s kind of the Jon Bene’ Ramsey of singing competitions. Also, maybe it is just me, but doesn't Archy's face kind of creep you out. He looks like one of those killer dolls. That's just my opinion for what ever little it is worth.

i definetly say to david cook, he was the one from the beginning, hes got a lot of potential than a kid with a dad's acting weired and too much drama,i just voted for david cook last night, he will make big bucks he just need to promote his own good song and he will rock the world too just like bo vice

The real deal is that people should close their eyes and listen to both singers and think who they'd rather listen to on the radio.
That's what AI is about.

Posted by: Lucia at May 21, 2008 5:01 PM

Lucia has it right. If you close your eyes and listen DC is reminiscent of fingernails on a blackboard. He's off key and his voice strains to hit the notes. DA, on the other hand is amazing to listen to. We're going to be listening to both no matter who wins but I sure as hell will switch to another station if DC comes over the air-waves. I really don't want my auditiory nerves destroyed--the sound he emanates is cringe producing.

Posted by: Vic at May 21, 2008 5:39 PM

I haven't really followed this season of AI but watched last night. David Cook did show most versatility but the baby David outsang the pants off of him. I was in tears when he sang Imagine-I don't care how sappy that sounds it was amazing.
That said the law of averages dictates that the scruffy rocker is going to win and not the better singer.

Posted by: jade at May 21, 2008 5:55 PM

I don't want to sound cliche so I'll look at this from a different angle. Froma music business point of view a Pop-Rock album from DC would be far more marketable than a DA album. I also don't know what type of album DA could make, besides an obvious pop standards albu in the stylings of a Josh Groban or a Michael Buble. Don't get me wrong, the kid has pipes, but he seems limited in his range stylistically. Realistically how many albums full of world peace and positivity ballads will he honestly be able to sell. It's nothing against him I bet he's a great guy he'd be a fabulous Broadway performer. But, DC is more talented as far as a pure musician in my personal opinion, but that's just my opinion. I know that regardless of win or lose, DC has a new fan in me and I cant wait to see he does next.

Posted by: CT at May 21, 2008 5:59 PM

As a grandmother of 12, who NEVER misses an episode of American Idol, I have to say that even I would buy what David Cook is selling!!! To me he truly is the TOTAL package of what an AI should be. Young David has a wonderful voice and is very talented, but, he still needs "life experiences" to handle what is involved , or what I think should involve, being an American Idol. I have pre teen granddaughters who love young David, but, again, they are looking at this through limited life experiences. I think David Cook has remained "true to himself" throughout this entire experience , taking risks, and making song choices that many would NOT have done. For that reason, he has proven to me that he is not only honest to himself, but, will provide his fans with that same honesty. I will be watching tonight, and, if, young David wins, I will be happy for him. However, I will be sad that the masses didn't see that David Cook truly is the AMERICAN IDOL.

Posted by: cybergranny at May 21, 2008 6:35 PM

If you're comparing Archuleta to Josh Groban and Michael Buble and then saying his style is less marketable, you might want to look again. Groban's Christmas album (CHRISTMAS ALBUM!) was the number one selling album of last year, and Buble has sold over 10 million albums, no small feat. Middle aged and older women, one of the last demographics around that actually pays for music, eat that shit up, and Christian music has always been a strong niche market seller. Pop-Rock is totally marketable as well, but I would doubt as much as Archuleta's power ballad crap

Posted by: walkmasterflex at May 21, 2008 6:50 PM

I agree with cybergranny. She is right on about this. DC was my tops throughout the whole season. All the sudden, up pops pipes outta DA and DC didn't sing as well as he has in the many past shows. I think it is a set-up, DC will get signed, gave up so DA could have the title. I don't think DC wanted the year AI title, not when he could do better getting signed for real by someone bigger. Yea, DA is awsome for his age, but what's that go to do with anything. His daddy will never stay outta the way so there goes his career. I thought DA was awsome lastnight, but as previously said, it was planned. He knew how to blow the sox off in the end. It's all BS. The whole show is rigged. Dreads stayed in while the Aussie gets booted. What's with that? Rigged I tell ya.

This article was written by a critic? What show was he watching? Everyone I know and read about feels like there was more talent this year than others. Writer is such a negative person, no wonder he doesn't like the sweet 17 year old! It's not like the kid can't sing either! He has a beautiful voice and has had enough of what it takes to make it this far. The judges liked him that's true but so has the American audience. David Cook is great and either of them deserve to win. Does this man have anything nice to say? Must be a blast to live with.

Cook's a screamer. Archie's a singer. It was so obvious last night even the tone deaf among us could hear it. Cook may win because screamers seem to do well in this country. But long term, as Archie does get those life experiences that some talk about, there is little doubt that he will be selling albums long after Cook has been forgotten as a second-rate rock and roller.

Posted by: Fernando at May 21, 2008 7:15 PM

David Cook is the real musician/performer. David A. is lost without a ballad and I don't know many people who will buy tickets to hear two hours of ballads. Besides he brings along a "stage dad" who would be a record company's worse nightmare. Either way I will be glad the baby tears from David A will be over and win or lose Idol, David Cook will have the better career. Daughtry - need I say more?

Posted by: Liz at May 21, 2008 7:29 PM

First of, Cybergranny you are adorable! And I like what you're sayin'. Another thing I wanted to say is longevity. Who has a better chance at having a longer living carer? That would again have to go to DC, in my opinion. Earlier I compared DA to Josh Groban, and yes I know his Christmas album was atop seller, but is his christmas album selling millions of copies in May? No, it isn't. DA could probably have a top single but i wont see him in the top 10 in 2 years. Again my opinion, and again he has awesome pipes, just not for popular music. And i like what someone said earlier "just close your eyes and listen" who do you think is better based on that. I'm not saing one or another, just listen.

Posted by: CT at May 21, 2008 7:30 PM

YUK!!! DC looks like he stuck his head in a electric socket YIKES!!! His attitude matches his looks...
Hving said that.. his voice is Ok..
Now!! DA once he gets some of lifes experiences away from Daddy you will be able to watch him fly.. you go DA.

Posted by: Princess at May 21, 2008 7:45 PM

David can sing but has no depth to his voice. Who likes music from people who sing like they are in a choir. Intersting distinctive voices are the people we recognize eventhough we don't know the song. People that sound better in person than with that pre-produced crud. David C. is far superior than David A. This show isn't called American Singer, it's American Idol. Rock star not scaridy cat! David C. can appeal to a large audience. David A. appeals to 12 and under only. I know the "up with people" wanna be will win, but like many before he, he'll tank and take his live to broadway (unless Disney gives him a show). Here's to David C. Hopefully he'll get an album out soon :)

Posted by: at May 21, 2008 7:54 PM

Hmmm....Has anyone thought that if David C. won the AI title that he would be tied to AI for the next who knows how many years after the tour with his record contract i am sure he wouldnt be singing songs that suit him he would be singing songs they want. David A. wants that title bad because he is so young and has no experience plus he has tied himself to the one style of music with all the ballads and when he tried to sing something upbeat like myboo OMG what a horrific song choice. SO with that being said I think David C. already has the contract deal that he wants and needed to throw last night for this reason although all of his coices he sang were really good and his "pipes" were hot last night as well as David A. but you could tell David A. was pushing himself to his limit last night. One last point the best part of the show was when Simon asked DC why not one of the other songs that were awesome that he sang earlier in the year and his comeback was he didnt want to repeat and its about changing it up (cant remember exactly) and then here comes DA with his repeat of imagine that took the sails out of DA for me anyway...... Regardless when they appoint DA as this years AI the real AMerican Idol who grew the most this year and came into his own will be David Cook.

In response to Kristen:

I am a classically trained singer... I'm glad your sister is, but I don't see how that makes your opinion any better.

Archuletta is not the better singer, the tone of his voice is bad... breathy and nasal and there isn't much he can do to fix that....style completely aside there.

Style-wise he is a cookie cutter singer... everything he sings sounds the same... he's not bad, he's just boring.

Cook has the better voice and the better package... he is also more original... and lacks the poor tone quality of Archuletta's voice.

Thank goodness!!! THE BEST MAN WON!!!! I was so pleased that David Cook won he really deserved to win he had the best voice has made the most of the year with always taking his game up to the next level each week and really challenging himself. I have a new respect for Simon on apologizing to David tonight i know that meant alot to him and to the viewers. I look forward to buying DC's album i bet it will be out before we know it. As far as DA goes I totally agree his voice is very odd to say the least very breathy and naseliy but something else i cant put my finger on maybe throaty not to sure just odd. and not a good odd at that. What was up with George Michael's omg i loved the song he sang but he butchered it with all the weird runs and trying to make his voice into something its not wow other than that the last show this year was by far the best one yet and jordin and carrie were at their best.

I've tuned in here every so often to read your recap, Tom. You've got a lot of strong and well-articulated opinions, which I respect; and you also know a lot about music so have the right to those opinions of yours.

BUT for an American Idol Addict such as myself, who knows it's cheesy entertainment but can give herself over to the fun of it all, you're a disappointing, no-fun-whatsoever recrapper. I hope VV hires someone else to do this next year, someone who can at least get into the spirit of the thing. You mention you're paid to do this--that in itself is a sign you're not the right writer for the job.

Now, I do believe I'd like to sit down and have a drink with you...and David Cook. I'd give you a hard way to go for being such a Cynical Bastardo all season. But I ain't gonna read you no more, no more. No I ain't gonna read you no more.

Right on cybergranny! I am so very glad Cook won tonight!!!!! He is OUTSTANDING and he very much deserved to win!!!! I LOVE American Idol, cheesiness, quirks and all and will now be going through withdrawls!!! Cook WAS himself and he DID sing the way he wanted to throughout the season and the title won't hurt him at all!!! In fact, he probably saved the show, with all the pimping issues!!!! I LOVED the Collective Soul performance!!!! I, for one, think Cook is quite handsome!!!! DON'T CHANGE COOK!!! Tom, the author, proves he is not even HALF the man Cook is at only 25!!!!!!!!!!! He should not be paid for writing such negativity!!!!!!

George Michael made the evening! I just love that song, and while he sang with a bit of a cold, dude, it was GEORGE MICHAEL. I just don't think the Idol kids knew the greatness that was on that stage.

Talk about reeling in a superstar! Way to go Fox!

alright, the concept of "guilty pleasure" is not above me.. however, i wouldn't defend a product that i considered to fit that category as though it were anything more than that. so, why the F are you all getting so upset about the author's (obviously correct) stance that the whole thing is a perfectly calculated profit-generator which shouldn't be seen as anything more? does it make him cynical, or are you all fools?
PS: how did you dingleberries end up on village voice's site, was teenbop.com unable to handle the volume of your blogs?

I just discovered "The World I Know" this year by hearing a Live acoustic version on a radio show, and it has become one of my favorite songs. In my opinion, the combination of this beautiful song and Cook's awesome performance was instrumental in winning him the competition by such a wide margin (12 million votes). Other new fans of the song might be interested in Live versions on Collective Soul's DVDs: an acoustic performance on the streets of Morocco on their self titled DVD from 2001, with original lead guitarist and co-writer Ross Childress, and on "Home," their 2006 DVD with orchestra.
Thanks and Congratulations to David Cook, Collective Soul and Ross Childress for this winning collaboration. I hope Cook will record a longer version of the song on his CD.

Response to Audy Morgan: "The thing that turned me off most about Archy is his pretend humbleness and fake emotional expressions."

A number of people on these boards have commented that David A is faking humility. I am surprised at how many people there are who are unable to accurately read another human being. He is the real thing, plain as day. There's not a crumb of pretense. Granted he is shy and reticent and on camera isn't at ease with revealing himself. That would be a tall order to expect of anyone to be at ease under the scrutiny of 30 million people. I have read and viewed the remarks of various people who actually know him personally and they corroborate that he is as he comes across, shy and very genuine. David Cook had said the same thing - "He's the real deal".
