The American Idol Season Finale Running Diary: David Archuleta Totally Loses

So much for inevitability

For all the producer manipulation and reliance on ringers this season, an actual amateur singer won American Idol last night, and I don't even mind that it's the one who picked a fucking Collective Soul song as his big finisher. This year's season finale was everything the rest of the season wasn't: fun, surprising, lighthearted. All of a sudden I'm looking forward to season eight.

8:00: Seacrest: "What happens when a nation is gripped by the closest competition it has ever seen?" Really, Seacrest? Really? We do still have actual elections in this country, don't we? Cook and Archuleta, both in all white, stare each other down like this was a publicity still from A Clockwork Orange or something.

8:01: 97.5 million votes came in last night. According to Seacrest, even Ruben Studdard got some votes. Cut to Ruben, who's starting to look like Big Pun. Should we be worried about this guy's health?

8:03: Go-nowhere contestants from seasons past are in the two finalists' hometowns, reporting live. That looks like reality-show purgatory.

8:05: Hey, another creepy group singalong with the whole top twelve! I kind of missed these things. They're singing the Temptations' "Get Ready," an impossible song to screw up. People from So You Think You Can Dance stand all around them and sort of do the wop. As intros go, this one's a lot of fun.

8:10: Cook and Archuleta sing that "Hero" song from the Spider-Man soundtrack, with Cook as Chad Kroeger and Archuleta as the guy from Saliva. If Archuleta spends the whole rest of his career doing things that the guy from Saliva has already done, I'll change my mind about him. (I've always sort of wanted to do a post on the guy from Saliva and what a batshit-weird career he's had. He's the guy who sings "Faaa-aame!" on "The Takeover"! He had pretty much the worst rap verse ever on Three 6 Mafia's "Mosh Pit"! Clearly, Archuleta should do these things.) These two actually don't look completely awkward onstage together, which is a first.

8:12: Seacrest calls Chad Kroeger "Chad Krueger." Like Freddy! I love this show.

8:14: Oh good lord, they're devoting significant screen time to promoting that godawful new Mike Myers movie. I feel bad for everyone involved in this.

8:18: Shameless promotions aren't any less lame when you make jokes about them being shameless promotions.

8:20: Syesha Mercado and Seal! Who comes up with these duet combinations? Actually, this is pretty great, especially when Seal does the raising-the-roof dance. For a randomly-appointed duet between an American Idol runner-up and a past-his-prime adult-contempo star, there's a whole lot of chemistry on that stage.

8:26: Jason Castro gets a "Hallelujah" encore. I still can't believe that whole thing happened. I've listened to every version of this song I could find since Castro sang it the first time, and I'd probably put his quavery, tremulous version in the top three. I like that he doesn't do all the overblown vocal swoops of the Jeff Buckley version, that he just sort of calmly speak-sings those words. If a song like this can get play on a whizjet-circus like this finale, there's hope for all of us.

8:29: All those Ford music videos get recapped, and then Seacrest tells both Davids that they've won free hybrids. That is some cheap cross-promotion right there.

8:31: A Donna Summer tribute? Holy shit! All the female contestants are singing "She Works Hard for the Money," complete with fumbly choreographed danced. Amanda Overmyer and Carly Smithson kind of rip through "Hot Stuff." I guess "I Feel Love" would've been too much to hope for. Still, Giorgio Moroder synth-jams on ratings-behemoth TV! I will not complain about a segment of this finale that gives burn to both Leonard Cohen and Giorgio Moroder, except to say that they really should've had a disco-themed show this year.

8:34: The real Donna Summer shows up to sing her new single, and it's pretty good grown-lady inspirational synthpop. She looks good, too. The So You Think You Can Dance people are excited. Wait, was that Ryan Seacrest breakdancing or just a So You Think You Can Dance person dressed exactly like Ryan Seacrest? I'm rewinding my DVR like four times, and yeah, it totally was Seacrest! This show rules. And Donna Summer sings "Last Dance." Other than the Love Guru thing, this finale has just been awesome straight through thus far, and not even that Diet Coke commercial with the Paul Oakenfold/Shifty Shellshock song can kill the momentum.

8:42: The two shock-elimination contestants get their moment: Carly Smithson and Michael Johns sing "The Letter." I can feel a lot better about these two now that I don't have to worry about either one actually winning. The arrangement is tinkly Vegas jazz, Carly looks all scarily intense, Michael comes perilously close to doing the white man's overbite, and all is right with the world. Hey, remember when American Idol still had contestants who looked like they maybe had sex every once in a while?

8:46: Jimmy Kimmel makes fun of Sanjaya, who's sitting right there. Somewhere, Danny Noriega is pissed. He also introduces a montage of Simon Cowell bashing fools. If they don't start bringing back freaky auditioners, this might be the best A.I. finale ever.

8:48: No, wait, it actually is the best A.I. finale ever: the top six dudes sing "Summer of 69"! David Hernandez kind of kills it! Oh wow, and here's the real Bryan Adams. I miss this guy. This new Bryan Adams single is pretty great. I wish this whole tribute segment could've found room for "Run to You" or "Cuts Like a Knife," but I am so not mad. This show really needs theme-shows for Donna Summer and Bryan Adams next season.

8:53: Jordin Sparks, via video package, announces that there's going to be an American Idol Disney World ride or something. Well, that doesn't make any sense.

8:55: I take back everything I said about David Cook yesterday. as he sings "Sharp Dressed Man" with ZZ Top. I can forgive Collective Soul covers as long as this guy is willing to share stage-space with those two mammoth beards and do the Chuck Berry duck-walk. I hope Chuck Eddy is watching this.

9:00: For a second, it looked like Seacrest was going to introduce Neil Young, which would've been weird. But no, it's Graham Nash, looking like someone's creepy uncle and singing with Brooke White. Snore.

9:06: The Jonas Brothers show David Archuleta how to do this teen-idol thing right. (Hint: it involves not being utterly boring.) In the audience, heads explode. Why don't these kids have a sitcom yet?

9:10: Obligatory freak montage. This makes me feel bad. One of the freaks shows up to sing with a marching band. Because giving this guy the attention he so psychotically craves is a good thing.

9:15: Geesh, OneRepublic. Without Timbaland. Ah, but here comes Archuleta to handle the second verse. Those Ryan Tedder/David Archuleta harmonies are the stuff of nightmares. I'm officially back to rooting for David Cook.

9:24: Jordin Sparks sings some decent-enough new single. It's no "No Air." Hasty prediction: the second Jordin album, whenever it comes out, will be a whole lot better than the first.

9:30: More summer-comedy cross-promotion: Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey, Jr. try out to be Pips, Forrest Gumping themselves into some old Gladys Knight Footage. Downey would actually make a pretty great Pip, I'm convinced. This goes on for a really long time without ever reaching a punchline, but it's still a whole lot better than that Love Guru shit.

9:35: Hey, it's Carrie Underwood singing "Last Name." Didn't I just see this? She sounds a whole lot better here than she did at the AMC awards; maybe she's still scared of Simon.

9:45: Another top-twelve group-sing, and they're doing George Michael songs. Oh man. You know what that means. Yup, here's George Michael, getting a titanic welcome and just monstering "Praying for Time." Paula cries. This guy just doubled his comeback-tour ticket sales right there.

10:02: Seacrest is teasing the results, and my DVR is coming dangerously close to cutting off. Come on, Fox.

10:03: Simon apologizes to David Cook? Whoa. He also says he doesn't care who wins, which is such a lie.

10:05: Holy shit, David Cook wins! About two seconds before the DVR cuts off, too. This is like the first honest-to-God surprise result we've had all season! America, it turns out, likes grown folks. And now that I think about it, David Cook might actually have a good album in him, as long as Clive Davis hooks him up with Max Martin or Polow da Don or somebody. I'm feeling pretty great about pop music after that show, I have to say. (The priceless Archuleta-fam reaction shot is on YouTube, of course.)

why do you keep on saying negative things about David Archuleta...It's so obvious that you're a DC fan.Enough, ok! He won already...Archuleta is a nice kid with flawless vocals...DC and DA has different styles in singing and their type of music is different as well. No matter who won, they will both have great/big musical careers...If you don't have anything nice to say, just don't say it!!!!!!!!!

Boy, you hit all the right notes on this year's Idol Finale. Howerver, you didn't mention that rediculous dress Jordin Sparks was wearing. It looked like something you'd roast a turkey in!! Sooooo glad DC won!

Tom Breihan is the radist fucking dude alive! (the author of this Blog incase you're all lost..)

Respect for speaking your mind my man. This is your oppinion, so understood.
I liked both DA and DC, but voted for DC. I think they will both do VERY well with their careers.
I loved the comment about Brooke White.. SNORE..LOL.. but yeah, God she was a snore bore..

Peace out.

Both guys are very good, Archeleta should have won; he is the most down to earth, and has all the BASIC humanistic characteristics that make him the type of person that we all need as a role model! Cook is just another rocker!

OMG! HURRAY for DAVID COOK! America Got it RIGHT DEAD ON! TO BOOT 12 million votes over the top of David Archuleta. I was running scared & almost felt like David Cook was NOT going to win, but America listened & heard & VOTED! America does know talent. David Archuleta is good, however, I feel he needs to get sometime & musical history under his belt. He is to young yet, he needs to be a teenager before going into the world of entertainment! I AM SO HAPPY & Estatic David COOK! I am from Indiana & his grandmother is in a nursing home here & where she is at was surrounded by WONDERFUL fans of his & it PAID OFF! HATS OFF TO YOU DAVID COOK, you worked hard for it.Party Marty from INDY!

All I can say is it was fixed. I hope I would watch another show. As if Simon didn't know who won. He starts saying I cut you short last night and I am sorry. Well he sucks with Cook. The better guy lost. I hope everyone is happy and if they only voted because they were mad that Daughtry didn't make it. Well theres a reason he can't sing either. LETS SEE WHO SELLS MORE MUSIC.........

Posted by: porch at May 22, 2008 12:15 PM

it is amazing how the DC fans have nothing but hate for DA, but DA fan respect and like DC. what is it that make you DC fans feel the only way someone can win is by make the other a losser, DA is clearly the better signer, DC is a nice guy and a good entertainer. just like Clay Akins, was a much better signer the Rubin, but Rubin had an appeal with the audiance. Hopefully DC will have a better post idol run then Rubin, but he is not going to do on vocals, it will be on entertaining.

I think that either way who ever won was okay. Both david's are great singers and they deserve the best. Everyone is saying bad things about DA which is wrong because he is just as good as david was or maybe even better. Although DC won DA should be able to succeed just as much as DC is going to. David Cook is a awesome singer and I'm really glad he won. I told everyone he would to nobody believed me.

Hey dude, you look kinda silly stating that an "actual ameteur" won last night. Google Axium - the name of the band that DC recorded with between 2000-2006, or Analog Heart - the name of his solo album released in 2006. After you do some homeword, wipe the smirk off your face and write actual facts!

I really believe the wrong David won...Not that David C is not good but David A...is the best he is this shy innocent kid who made me want to be a fan of American idol all over again. He's awesome and i can't wait to purchase his CD's

Thank you David A...You made me get goosebumps every time i heard you.

I was really disappointed that David Archuleta did not win - his voice was devine, and at such a young age. He was under incredible pressure - David Cook was good but I'm sorry I have to agree with the others about David Archuleta -

Posted by: Claudia at May 22, 2008 12:45 PM

David Cook is a weird and forgetable singer. I already do not remember his voice. All I remember is his crazy hair. He won lol. That is sooooo unbelievable!!! Well , never will pay for David's C. shouting!!!!!
We are all need new good singers like David Archeleta and Saisha.

I thought that the winning song "Having the time of my life" is the Canadian Idol's ( Brian Melo) song?? What's going on ??

Posted by: CR at May 22, 2008 12:48 PM

What a negative review. You sound like such a bitter, overly judgemental person. Try looking for the good instead of the bad.

Posted by: step[hanie at May 22, 2008 12:49 PM

Great Finale - Great Season! The wrong David did win but both are great. I can't see myself buying any David C album but I will buy David A's music just to experience the pure beauty of his voice.
Wasn't it supposed to be about the singing?

This author is a moron---Cook had previously released a solo album before. You look like a fool.

Also, why do you get your jollies out of bashing a shy teenager who did amazingly well in the competition. You wanted Daved A to be an a-hole, would that have made it better for you? Your the a-hole.

Sorry my mistake Brian Melo's song is "All I ever wanted" but the title of the American Idol song is a big part of the lyrics. Listen to both verions ,
its kinda of wierd but they both sound
very similar !!

Posted by: doogan at May 22, 2008 1:08 PM

Im happy DC won!! I dont hate DA, but I do think that DA makes a great singer too!! I enjoyed DA singing with One Republic last night. If DA wants to make it (and I know he can) he needs to make his own decisions...and stop trying to live his dads dream. make his own musical dream. thats what bothered me about DA.... his daddy trying to be in control of it all! I wish both guys the best of luck. And hope that DA get a record deal where the producer will step in and tell his daddy that this is DA's contract not his daddys, and to butt out of it

Posted by: amanda at May 22, 2008 1:13 PM

I am so glad I voted MANY, MANY times for DAVID COOK. 1st and foremost, he is a classy guy! I think he truly has a special rapport with David A & feels bad for all the BS, surrounding his father! His reaction to David A, between the time he won & sang his winning song, seaks for itself! He's not a prodigy. He's just a guy who went to the AI tryouts, for his brother but fate had other plans for him! He truly deserved to win for so many resaons. His background & talent speak for itself! I really believe he will follow the path, of Carrie U, Chris D, Clay A & Kelly C. I know I will buy his 1st CD. I wish David A all the best. I hope HE will follow the path of what he wants for "himself" **not what "others" dictate what he should do! I've read many interviews online & 1 by David A's father bothered me more than any others. The horrible things he said, esp. about David C, really makes me wish, that David A, will spread his wings, experience life through his own eyes & ears. He is 17... not a baby! and... I hope he will be on the tour bus, WITHOUT HIS FATHER!!!!!!!! BEST OF LUCK DAVID C! KEEP YOUR FEET FIRMLY PLANTED ON THE GROUND, NEVER FORGET WHERE U CAME FROM AND... KICK SOME A..!!!

Posted by: Roni at May 22, 2008 1:14 PM

Well, obviously it was a popularity contest......and not the best singer!!!

Posted by: hero at May 22, 2008 1:18 PM

IT IS OVER GIVE IT UP, if you don't like DA then don't buy, listen, watch or anything else he may do, that is your choice but leave the bashing out of all this. Both will have great careers and both are great guys. Why all the bashing like Jordan's dress do you really think she cares what you think she is laughing all the way to the bank and so will the David's, who cares who sells the most its not like its your money. Grow up and find something good to do with all of your energy what a waste. Leave DA alone you DC fans got your way your are poor winners

Posted by: barb at May 22, 2008 1:24 PM

America heard Talent for a change. Yes DA has some, but he is not suited for the Pop/Rock genre, and more suited to Broadway. The name of the show is American Idol. No Broadway stars on the rise.

DC was by far the better choice.

DA has time to cultivate his voice (which I don't think has changed yet) for the stage.

Posted by: Sophia at May 22, 2008 1:26 PM

The article you read that said DA's father wrote is not him, he can't say anything he also was under contract with AI, that wasn't him, he probably doesn't even know it was out there, just more bashing on innocent people, DC would hate all of this bashing on someone he cares about and he won and everyone is happy, David's dad is great and caring just another ploy to make this season more interesting, and all it did was hurt a family but the big boys made a ton of money on all of it.

Posted by: Sue at May 22, 2008 1:30 PM

I fell asleep during George Michael and woke up just in time to see David Cook have his "OMG what have I done" moment. I appreciate it Tom, that you seem optimistic. I hope 19 Entertainment doesn't make plastic-wrapped American cheese out of this poor guy. I guess this will be a story to follow.

Posted by: crabpaws at May 22, 2008 1:33 PM

Broadway? You think David A is suited more for broadway???? I don't think you were listening to the same stuff I was listening to all season. He has such a smooth voice, I was thinking he'd be better in more of the R&B or pop genre.... DEFINITELY not broadway... that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Broadway week he barely even sang his broadway song in a broadway style.

Posted by: Stephanie at May 22, 2008 1:37 PM

I happen to know the Archuleta family and it is a fact that singing is David's choice not his father's and isn't wonderful that he has the support he needs to follow his dreams, wish everyone had that kind of dad. His dad has also taught him respect, manners, social skills and David doesn't drink, do drugs or smoke what a role model. His dad was ask to stay out of the arranging room for the last 2 weeks, when are you people going to quit buying into the media madness that is all this is. Jeff is a great dad that cares about his family it is time to let this go and quit hurting David and his family.

Posted by: barb at May 22, 2008 1:41 PM

Barb,

Broadway is not an insult.
David A being forced to collaberate with BOY BANDS that are so sugary processed that they have no substance is not what the boy deserves. I think that he can benefit from the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Posted by: Sophia at May 22, 2008 1:48 PM

Sorry, I meant Stephanie not Barb

Posted by: Sophia at May 22, 2008 1:55 PM

American Idol, I thought, was about creating an idol. Unless you are gay, under 16, or over 65, I don't see how David A is an idol. He is cute and extemely talented, but he is no idol.

David C is handsome, talented, and hip. He looks and sings like what I imagine an idol to be. David A looks like an eagle scout.

David A will have plenty of time to sing with Clay Aiken, Josh Groban, and Michael Buble' -- all talented, and all good for a song's worth of my time. David C and Daughtry are good for commutes's worth of my listening time.

Posted by: SkyDog at May 22, 2008 1:55 PM

this has been definitely the best season of AI ever! I live in Asia and have to stay up late to watch the repeat show. it is such a bummer that I can't vote for DA. cos i am not in the US. Even though i always supported DA, I understand that DC can be more entertaining and respect that he has his certain kind of charm... i totally cried when i watching it tonight. in any case, they will both make it big in their own styles and i can't wait to see more of their success!

To the author of this article - how rude!!! It's not even like DC or DA has ever showed any dislike for each other...and both of them were very graceful - DC gave heartfelt hugs to DA and DA maintained his smile and took it well. And for the record, DA's parents were clapping too still... what do you mean "priceless" reaction?
and to those DA bashing DC fans - DC will be disappointed that you act this way for sure!

Posted by: JLo at May 22, 2008 1:56 PM

I think Breihan has a stiffy for Archuleta.

Posted by: johnny at May 22, 2008 2:01 PM

Wow, look at all the (read: typical) straight guys who hated David A.-- and who always have. I'm sure your girlfriends (if you can keep one) are pretty ambivalent and congratulatory over DC's win - sans the venomous glee over DA's loss. Esp. the author - chill.

Posted by: R.J. at May 22, 2008 2:02 PM

Posted by: zztop at May 22, 2008 2:46 PM

Wow, you are a faggot...your endless drooling over David cook is absolutely vomitable..

And everyone knows why Cook won, people that like his pseudo rock are the preteens who grew up in unstable families.. all voted for him

End.of.story.

Posted by: you fag at May 22, 2008 2:54 PM

Now yes, DA has a great singing voice, but it was obvious that he doesn't have the today's music style of singing. What I mean is he stumbled on some of the notes when he sang Apologize with OR, and then on the Saliva and Nickleback tune, he would try to hold a note or two too long and was behind the music trying to catch up. DC is more comfortable with the stage and will have a better career. Who is going to buy DA's CD with nothing but boring ballads? I like the kid, but glad DC won. He'll have a better music career, but will it be as good as Chris Daughtry? IDK, Daughtry has a better voice than DC, in my opinion.

Posted by: steve at May 22, 2008 2:57 PM

Yeah, yeah, so Archie can sing. He is still boring, unless you are 13.

Posted by: Donna Valentine at May 22, 2008 3:08 PM

THANK YOU FOR RECOGNIZING HOW AMAZING JASON CASTRO'S VERSION OF "HALLELUJAH" WAS!!!! It was the most emotionally raw and real song of the night...he was shaking he was so into it. He absolutely laid his soul bare on stage and with so many "big vocals" and bombastic singing that was an amazing thing to see. Hope a record company snatches this guy up and CD's fly off the shelves!

Posted by: Stephanie at May 22, 2008 3:11 PM

Honey, How gay are you? Little bit, right? What's a matter, no longer cute and lovable like Archie?

Get over it. Archuleta is the more talented. The tasteless public bought David Cook like they buy highway diner specials and chain restaurant salt slaw -- getting fatter and fatter. Fat body, fat mind. Goes the same with the breaking record sales of bad movies with special effect -- a simple storyline is not enough immediate graitfication and mindless thrills . I got a special effect for YOU! Where is virtual reality when I need it.

Congratulations, David. Now you get to do all the talk shows next week, star in a Ford commercial, sing the national anthem at a first-round NFL playoff game next year, release an album that by that time no one cares about. Thats what it means to be an "Idol." I wish this show and everyone that watches it would die. OK, that was mean. The show and most people that watch it.

i think that DA should have won he is the better singer!!! i was crying so much when i saw that DC won. DC is only a rocker guy DA is sweet and can sing more diffrent kinds of songs DC can only sing rock. I think that DA will sell more albums then DC i will buy all on DA albums and none of DC. DA is also way hotter then DC waaaaaaay!!!!!!! I LOVE U DA

Wow! The information is less then 24 hours old and here we all are talking about it. There is around 50 posts right here. We even had a minute by minute documentation of the entire two hour show. Somebody should really do something about FOX for taking our lives away from us. How pathetic are all of us?

Cook won american idol's ONE contract. David Archuleta, young man, hold your head up high. God has a much bigger plan for you. You now have more than one choice of opportunities and contracts to choose from. You are still an amazing singer. It is not all about rock and roll. You are free of the AI Simon Cowell and Producers arrogance and direct marketing for a rocker to add to the list. Who cares. I hope they know how to market Cook. He too is very talented. Good luck to all the top 10 contestants. Thanks for an entertaining season. David Archuleta I can't wait to buy your new CDs and continue to listen to your wonderful and pure voice.

David A.- You are awesome- You got robbed You were the better singer.

Posted by: Donna Fox at May 22, 2008 4:05 PM

For anyone questioning David Archuleta's talent because they prefer Cook (the real manly type), please stop and get a life people. Louder is not better. If that is what you prefer, that is fine, but please get an education, there are so many different styles of music. Why do you have to be so mean and arrogant. STOP. You are only showing how mean, stupid and uneducated YOU ARE. Get a life already. How pathetic. I hope David Cook becomes successful under the AI spell. Winning does not guarantee success in the music business.

It gave me much joy to see the disappointment and disbelief on the Archuleta's pimp-dad's face. David A. almost looked relieved/ecstatic to be losing...perhaps now he can take a break from being the family's main bread winner/whore. Poor kid.

Tom - check out a stream somewhere of anything off of Analog Heart. DC's got a good album in him without the svengali behind Britney Spears (Max Martin) or a person who works with R&B/Rap acts (Polow da Don).

Destiny, no offense, but how old are you to be reading a blog on the Village voice?

Hotness level should have nothing to do with a performance contest. Originality, the ability to attract the public before, during and after a performance are things to consider.

Somehow, I feel that you enjoyed the Jonahs Brothers performance, as well.

I hate to say it, but DA has very little of those as of yet. But I am sure he will be getting a contract with Nick or Disney no matter what. Winning AI does not necessarily mean having success, but I feel the DC will be successful.

Echo to Stephanie...thanks for regarding Jason Castro's "Hallelujah" performance. He truly delivers from the heart when he connects with a song (also "Rainbow"). He is so much more about the song's meaning and emotion! Too bad TPTB had to give him one more slight by introducing him as "pulling teeth" (his interviews) and how "pleasant" he sounds. I guess that was the best compliment they could give this guy???I hope he makes a CD in the future that goes gold or platinum and puts them all to shame!

Posted by: kimconmom at May 22, 2008 4:21 PM

this has been definitely the best season of AI ever!

Posted by: JLo at May 22, 2008 4:25 PM

DC has a gigantic head. He's like an alien.
Three years from now A will be outselling
C mostly because C is forgettable. Heard that
same voice a million times, in the 90's!

I'll bet you Archie won every single week except for this one, and the Idol producers are probably scratching their heads wondering why? I think I know why Archie lost. THE FOUR HOUR VOTING PERIOD! The other weeks had two hour voting periods. Let me explain.

Archuleta’s fan base consists of a large number of High School teenagers. Although teenagers have a lot of energy and enthusiasm, they simply don’t have the stamina and tenacity that people in their 20’s and 30’s do. These are qualities people start to develope when they grow up and join the workforce. Most teenagers can’t do anything for more than an hour or two without becoming distracted or disinterested. Archie’s fans simply pooped out. Either that or their parents took their cell phones from them and told them to get to bed. After all, it was a “school night”.

Do you know when in the Hellraiser movies when that pandora's box opens and Pinhead and all the other fucked up demonic minions come barreling out of the netherworld to bring agony and profound pain to anybody in their path Clive Barker style? I think that scenario is much akin to when Tom writes about American Idol and all the mouth breathing dumber than Corky from Life Goes On REJECTS literally jump out of the fucking woodwork to bring agony and profound pain to the readers. I wonder if David Archuleta caught a devastating ass-kicking from that psycho- showbiz- loser father of his for losing.

You have to look at yourself first and I don't believe that you are in any way better than Archuleta. Oh my, the kid is only 17 and look what he had experienced and achieved. Look at you, you are here writing a lame article with no sense whatsoever. Get a real job will you? Leave the archuleta kid alone or you might find him on top one day just laughing his ass out on you. You loser.

He also had to deal with the pressures of his dad watching his every move, telling him what to do and say. No wonder hes so shy he doesnt want to screw up infront of his dad. David cook was great to but i just think david a. had a lot more to overcome. I hope he doesnt feel bad beacsue he has a great career ahead of him.

Posted by: urughulator at May 22, 2008 8:25 PM

Yeah this was like the Democratic nomination race.

David Archuleta was Hillary Clinton. Pegged as the frontrunner early on, plenty of experience (he'd won Star Search), qualified, and obviously the one with more talent.

David Cook was the Barack Obama of this whole mess. No real filling, no experience, not even all that amazing. A pretender in a lot of ways. And we know he'll probably end up doing a crappy job. But he got way more votes just cause he's not Archuleta.

David "Clinton" Archuleta will end up being the far more successful one with longterm, dedicated followers.

David "Obama" Cook will be a flash in the pan that everyone abandons once a new 'flavour of month' comes along.

Sad but true.

Why is it that unless you can sing like a rocker you are not talented? What is wrong with you people? The Jonas Brothers are teens that sing ROCK. Give Archuleta a break. He has an amazing voice. You don't like his voice don't bash him. None of us like all artists out there. I hate loud rockers and rap too, but that does not mean they are not talented. Stop being such one track minded Americans people. Get a freaking life and open your mind and learn something NEW or turn your darn radio off to the music you prefer. AI has done Archuleta a huge favor. They no longer control him. David Cook has to deal with their nonsense now. Poor David Cook he is in for a bumpy ride. He would have been better off not winning this, and followed the Daughtry loss and huge success. If Daughtry won AI he would not have been as popular. He did his own thing and that worked. Simon wanted a piece of that but they are not known to market rockers. They are control freaks remember? Good luck to both Davids they both have done an incredible job. And good luck to all the other top 10 as well. Great job guys. Keep smiling.

Both Davids are gracious & intelligent guys & they impressed me as decent human beings first, talented performers/singers second. Wish I could say the same about some of their fans. Personally, I enjoy the sound of Archuleta's voice, but appreciate the personality & passion that David Cook brought. It'll be interesting to see what kind of first CD they produce...best wishes to them both.

People hate front-runners??
Its clear that David Archuleta is the most brilliant singer and authentic performer in the competition... He has it all in the bag.
He should've won after the KO performance night finale.
He just outperformed his rival.
I feel happy for DA coz he did great that night in the finale and he proved that he deserved in that spot but he also proved that he deserved to be crowned this season NEXT American Idol.
How could people hate a front-runner???
He has done soo much in the show..
He's the only reason I watch the show coz this kid is sooo interesting , very inspiring , a prodigy.. He's destined for superstardome.
I'm sooo proud of him coz of all the most talented bunch in tis season.. He knock them off and still down-on-earth , humble and likable.
He's soooooo talented , the charisma ! , charming , fantastic , brilliant... All praise to him.
I still want him to win.. but oh well,
he should've won and I cant stand cookfans still trying to ruining him. Its obvious they're jealous and dont have any talent at all.. I'm just sooo glad that David Archuleta has come to AI to bring it up to a new level and showing the world the greatness of music. I love this kid. I feel sorry for him but I'm still happy that he came far and he will even come further when he gets older.. I'm still going to support him ... He's my only IDOL forever.. NO ONE CAN CHANGE THAT.
Both Davids are winners...
No one in the contestants are losers..
They are the best and very talented not only Cook... I like some other contestants than cook. Oh well, David Archuleta is going to be very successful anyway or should I say even more successful and famous. I love all the top 12 contestants.. David Archuleta is still the best and the winner for me.
He's destined for superstardome..
I love his music.. It is hot!
ITS OK. He still brought the hottest , maddest vocals in the competition. He proved that at a very young age, he could crush older performers...
He just inspire many people accross the globe with his music.
I cant wait for him...........

I couldnt believe it!!
I cant get over it !!!
I already miss David ARchuleta and I feel bad for him... He should've won.
Now, the whole world is sad.
DA just puts smile on our faces everytime he sings..
He's brilliant and i appreciate his love for music.
He's a brilliant performer and a hundred times better than any other singers...
I love how he revives all the old songs .. I want to hear his music and his voice ...
This kid has a soul for music.

I cant believe the rocker won over the soulful singer who is likely a winner , too.
David Archuleta sings more beautifully and he connects more with people.
I hope this show is rigged!

why do a lot of people hate david archuleta... oh, i know.. because you're a cook fan! i hate those cook fans who are saying negative things about david archuleta... why? can you sing? you haters are so arrogant. you dont even possess any huge talent unlike archuleta. just stop saying negative things about the poor little kid. he doesn't have any intentions to do something ridiculous!

Posted by: iya at May 23, 2008 5:03 AM

i think archuleta should've won the title.

BECAUSE, at his early age, he could have been the youngest MALE to ever win the title and he has something to be proud of. If cook didn't win, its obvious that he'll have a hit just like chris daughtry's. on the last performance night, archuleta knocked-off cook, which is a great thing, coz' he gave everything on the finale. i think on the top 3 night, the producers really cheated on archuleta, because they picked a weak song for him, which they should have chosen a whitney houston song or chad kroeger's hero. i think they really wanted cook to win, their early favorite was archuleta, but when the "stage dad", "jeff archuleta's banned" issues came out, i think the fans gave up and think of negativity. they already lost hope. poor archuleta, he never won any competitions yet. all the producers think is just MONEY. c'mon, they could also sell a lot from archuleta. if the american idol decided to also put the iTunes downloads on season 6 blake lewis could have also won. he's like cook, they both have originality. well, back on the topic, for those people who are saying bad things about archuleta, they suck! do they know how to sing? c'mon, what's good about the kid is that he tries! he tries and try. he had an early vocal paralysis right? so he could have not sing as well as he can when he was just little, besides, archuleta has the american idol factor, and cook has the star quality, and archuleta is MASTERCLASS.

They were both deserving. But I'm a Cookie fan, so I was thrilled :)

Highlights for me:
- Jason singing Hallelulah
- Brooke and Graham Nash - awesome!
- Michael & Carly singing The Letter
- Cookie's commercial, dancing in his underwear - priceless

Lesser moments: Seal sang circles around Syesha (though I appreciate her overall). Donna Summers looked frumpy and exhausted. What was up with her wig? Brian Adams and George Michael looked like cadavors. The dancers from Nigel's other show are unnecessary, unwanted distractions. Shameless pimping of his show, and the camera work in the beginning was atrocious. I wanted to see the top 12 singing, not some grasshoppers hopping around the stage and getting in the way.

And the pimping of that movie in the beginning was insulting and almost makes me not want to watch AI again. I watch it in spite of such bull because of the kids and their talent, but Fox and Nigel are soul-less if you ask me.

Also the Jonas brothers are horrendous and can't sing, when AI is all about singing.

david archuleta is amazing! one of the things that has really annoyed me this season is when simon and the media have said that david a only appeals to tweens & grannies. i'm 22 and am in the demographic that has been falling for AI this season- and i love (LOVE) david archuleta's voice & music... and i know that a lot of my friends would enjoy his music too even though they don't watch the show.

even though the judges weren't crazy about it, i really enjoyed his performance of more contemporary songs on the show -- like "with you". his voice was perfect for that, and if he had more than a few days to practice he could sell a song like that internationally. and did you hear him sing "apologize" with one republic on the finale? he sounded AWESOME. if he puts out songs like that on his first album he will sell equally as many records as Leona Lewis, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson. i think he definitely has the vocal ability to be an international phenom. and he's 17-- so he's only going to get better.

one comment about the show this season... i felt that the constant "theme" weeks severely limited the contestants' ability to showcase their versatility as artists-- as well as limited our ability to enjoy a diverse set of performances! i know AI made big $ off having these theme weeks for artists promoting a new CD, but it just sucked something out of the show & made it feel so... processed.

luckily we had David Archuleta & David Cook & a few other contestants who could overcome awful choices on the part of the producers & hold the season together. i think this really was the season with the most talent we've seen so far.

best of luck to both Davids. they seem like VERY great guys & i really think they do exemplify "idols". role models. just good people that we would want to be friends with, but whose music we'd also want to listen to on a day to day basis!

and one last note for David Archuleta - although he'll never read this at least it's out there - you are so amazing. your music really has lifted my spirits in the past couple of months, and i just love everything you sing! so keep singing it. please and thanks:)

Tom, have enjoyed a season's worth of your "AI" observations. Have agreed with you more often than not, and laughed over many of your takes on the weekly performances. Your opinion on Castro's version of "Hallelujah" is spot-on, IMO -- his performance connected me with the Jeff Buckley version, and I appreciate Jason pointing the way. Have to disagree with you on the Collective Soul choice for David Cook's final number, though I understand where you're coming from. I'm not a music critic, don't claim to be one, but the emotion pumped into David C.'s version got to me, and I appreciated his risk in the finale of not doing "Billie Jean" or "Hello" again. Can't fault David A.'s redux of "Imagine" in terms of technical proficiency, but the parts he left out just didn't work for me, no matter how beautifully sung. No offense, David A., you seem like a nice guy, just not "rough" enough in style for what I prefer. In several seasons of "AI," this is the first in which the contestant I rooted for won, and like you, I might even be willing to download the winner's album when all is said and done. I found season 6 disappointing but thoroughly enjoyed season 7. Thanks, Tom, for consistently posting an entertaining take on "AI." I'll definitely check out your views of season 8 when it rolls around.

Tom, you're kidding us, right? You can't possibly be so naive. The AI finale was "the first honest-to-God SURPRISE result". One would have to be blind or over medicated on prozac not to see the $2.5 billion AI British franchise and our wicked little Mr. Cowell's manipulations over the last 4 weeks. They had already hand selected their fattest cash cow well before the final vote, and America's sheep followed them blindly to the river. No disrepect to DC (love the guy) but a large percentage of Americans are really gullible...it's frightening. Here we had 2 great finalists (real artists with a lot of integrity) but the most manipulative and shameless self-promoting antics by the producers and Simon in Idol history. Anyway, either David deserved to win, I just wish they had kept it real. Heh it's a pop idol show, nothing more.

Now Tom, you really should pick on someone your own age (oh, wait, you probably are Archuleta's age, based on this article.) I mean, you may not like him..but a music critic (is that what you are?) should at least be able to recognize musical talent. Hmmmmm.

The kid is gifted. I mean, to give Jordin Sparks more kudos than DA, what is wrong with you, Tom. I thought the Voice was a serious publication...at least it used to be. It's sad, we are a manic, instant gratification society with little depth and a short attention span. Are your critiques about art or just instant celebrity. I think the later. And what's with the snide comment about DA's family? All I see on the YouTube video, is DA's father smiling and standing and applauding DC.

Now stop being a wicked little boy and go back to music school.

Congrats to both Davids. And, DA, don't worry, there is a good percentage of serious music lovers that have the soul and attention span to recognize and appreciate true artistry. I look forward to watching you blossom.

Anyone who thinks the Jonas Brothers have anything to offer David Archuleta has already lost all credibility as a music reviewer or cultural critic. One of the most ignorant things I've read about the entire competition.

Reading the posts on this and other boards is a little sickening at times. Some posters are fairly thoughtful and considered in their opinions, but many others are asserted with such intensity, stating that person's opinion as, "I'm right and you're just wrong if you don't agree." Hey folks, everyone has an opinion,6 billion of us in the world. How about a little more openmindedness? Consider the possibility that everyone's opinion is valid, at least for who they are and what they know. Just possibly there is something to learn from someone else's viewpoint?

Okay - let's get real...... any record company would be happy to have the fan base of either one of these Davids. Two different styles and audiences. If 97 million voted and they were 12 million apart and you divide the base in half for the crazies that voted hundreds of times
and the number that will actually buy an album then you get a really BIG NUMBER to $ell albums to - freaking duh people.
Look at all the non AI winners that got the exposure and ran with it! Go David go! The Arch Angels and the Cougars for Cook will make both these young men
successful.

Ok, whoever you are who wrote this article, I am too lazy to scroll all the way back up to see your name and also because you don't warrant my expending that extra energy to do so, but I have to say that while spewing out subjective opinions about personal likes and dislikes is totally okay for anybody, it is super annoying when inaccurate info is dolled out as if you know something. So do your homework or else you sound like a major FOOL, a giant DUFUS. Cook, an amateur? What is your definition of amateur? Someone who already has an album out? Someone whose album won some award in his home state and was dubbed the "New Heartthrob"? Did you not see his interview with Kimberly Caldwell? Are you that uninformed? Someone who by his own admission has been singing for the last ten years, performing some 400 songs in public? Or I guess in your book Cook is an amateur because he never won Star Search when he was 12 and his voice had not changed yet.

And what do you mean by priceless commenting on DA's family standing up and applauding the announcement of the winner? Do you have special eyes that see things that the rest of us don't see? What a useless comment, a complete waste of space. Opinions are one thing, inaccurate statements just make you look like an ignorant, uninformed sorry ASS.
