Status Ain't Hood Says Goodbye

Bone gristle popping from continuous grinding

This could be my last day at the Village Voice. I've been working at this newspaper for just shy of three years now, and I've made it through countless staff purges and five different editors-in-chief. (It's six if you count Eric Wemple, but I never laid eyes on the guy, so I don't.) I've written 749 posts, probably millions of words. As far as I know, I've been blogging professionally about music longer than anyone on the planet, and I've certainly stayed in one place longer than anyone else. Something like half the staff here has either been fired or left since I started, and it's pretty incredible that nobody's seen fit to axe me. But nothing lasts forever. I'm leaving the paper this week, going to work for another spot. And I'm still not fired. My new gig is for a new online thing that's launching this fall, and I wish I could tell you guys more about it right now.

I named Status Ain't Hood after a line from Destiny's Child's "Soldier," and the name was always supposed to be a joke on myself: of course I have no place writing about half the stuff I write about, but fuck it. It's always been fun watching comments-section goons try to flip it on me: "Status really ain't hood!" I got there first, assholes. In any case, this little experiment has given me the opportunity to piss off anyone who cares about music in one way or another. It's also let me build an audience of people who love to argue about this shit, and I can't even articulate how much I've loved the emails and comments that you've sent my way since I teased my departure on Friday. I've had a great run, and I'm thankful for everyone who's read my stuff in the past three years.

As a music writer, I'm consistently amazed at the level of talent that's come through this place in my time here. I've worked alongside and gotten to know a real monster set of rock writers: Robert Christgau, Chuck Eddy, Rob Harvilla, Zach Baron, Pete L'Official, Camille Dodero, Nick Catucci, Tricia Romano, Joy Press, Shawn Bosler, David Marchese, Max Berry. All these guys are complete beasts at what they do, and I've learned tons from every one of them. (I'd add Greg Tate to that list, but I was always too nervous around him to ever have a proper conversation. It took me months to get up the nerve to talk to Christgau, too.) There's one guy I'd like to single out, though. Nick Sylvester is the reason Status Ain't Hood ever had a chance to exist. I moved from Baltimore to New York with no idea what I'd end up doing; I figured I'd be lucky to be fact-checking at Entertainment Weekly or something. Nick talked me up and got my foot in the door. And during my first nine months or so here, I had to step my game up enormously because I was running opposite Riff Raff, the toughest competition imaginable. Nick is one of the two people to whom I'd like to dedicate this entire run. The other is my wife Bridget, for too many reasons to list here.

There's no way I could acknowledge all the other people who have helped me out in one way or another. Grant Siedlecki drew and painted amazing pictures to go along with these posts. Voice staff writer Tom Robbins, along with Camille Dodero and Rob Harvilla, helped me get on staff here after I'd spent a couple of years getting freelance money for full-time work. Web News Editor Mike Clancy is just a great dude to work across from. The community of music writers here in New York has never been anything less than welcoming. Everyone who ever left a comment here, including the innumerable crazy American Idol fans, helped keep this space interesting. Everyone who ever wrote an online screed against me helped keep me on my grind. I owe a lot to people.

I don't know yet whether today is my last day. My union, UAW local 2110, is right now renegotiating its contract with the Voice's owners. That contract will be up tonight at midnight, and there's a good chance we'll go on strike tomorrow. I've never been in this situation before, and I have no idea how likely a strike is, but I do know that I'll be damned if I'm going to cross any picket lines, virtual or otherwise. I've got another job now, so I'll be fine whatever happens. But for the sake of this newspaper's editorial, art, classified, production, and ad sales staff, I hope mangement can come to a fair agreement with the union. These people all work unbelievably hard, and they do no deserve to have their health care and benefits eviscerated. If there's a strike, today is my last day. If there's not, I'll be out the door on Thursday. Tomorrow is Quarterly Report day, and if everything works out, I'll have that post up here tomorrow. But if the strike does happen, I'll be reactivating Dip Dip Dive, my old blog, and the Quarterly Report will be up there instead.

Thank you all. It's been real.

wow. sorry to see you go, but i look forward to seeing where you end up. there's nothing like reading one of your reviews and saying to my monitor, "what the hell does this guy know? give me a break!"

"dip dip dive"
"status ain't hood"

Now we have to come up with another non sequitur name for your next spot.

"Ended up Ballin"

(as in "started out hustlin/ended up ballin" from that awful Carter 3 track that's now going to be in my head for the next several hours)

I can't think of another reason to go to the voice, time to check "no" on the Remember Me button.

Please keep up the nasally podcasts, I'll contribute $5 on a mic.

Posted by: Greg. at June 30, 2008 2:08 PM

Tom, I like to give you a hard time in the comments here, especially lately re: Young Buck, but really a lot of that's because you're not still down in Baltimore to shoot the shit with at shows. This site was always a good read whether you were wrong or right, and doing the paid regular blogging thing (in a much lighter capacity than you) over the past year has given me a new appreciation for the quality and consistency of your work and how hard it is to do. Hope your new gig is a good one and that we get to grab a beer next time you're down here.

A sad day indeed. At least you haven't retired.
Your column was the only thing left worth reading in the voice.

Posted by: John T. at June 30, 2008 2:41 PM

Yeah man, your writing was dope and I can't front...I looked fwd to your posts. It even inspired me to start my own blog (http://undergroundtriniartiste.blogspot.com).

Posted by: Da Face at June 30, 2008 3:02 PM

Seriously your column was one of the things that kept me going through the work day.

Sometimes I'd check back like five times in one day just for this column; my fiancee would hear about it non-stop because i got what you were saying like nine out of ten times.

I'll miss the fuck out of your magnificent column and podcast Tom Breihan.

thanks for everything tom, you got me listening to more stuff than i possibly could've foreseen. and it's always-from wale to disfear-been pretty damn kickass. i'll be reading wherever you go next.

i think the next one should be titled, as long as we're talking non-sequiturs, "only eat beats" or maybe "puppy dog sweaters." just a thought. good luck.

"It rules. It's like this kind of loopy, dreamy, synthy, like, droopy, kind of like, like, sleepy take on like, space-blues."

Haha, whatever your description was I think it somehow managed to shoehorn in each of the seven dwarves. But seriously, good luck wherever you go, I'll def. be reading it.

seriously, this is the first time I have felt that nostalgic pang, a la the final episode of sopranos or the wire, for a blog being discontinued.

Status Ain't hood will always be my favorite, I will follow Tom Breihan into the gates of hell.

The Voice is now getting removed from my browsers homepage.

take care good friend,

I've really enjoyed reading your stuff the past few years, Tom. Good luck with the new gig, and know that I'm not the only one who will follow you wherever you go.

Posted by: Michael at June 30, 2008 4:14 PM

Tom, this is the only blog I have ever paid much attention to - just scoped it passively a couple times then got sucked right in. I've been neglecting new music in recent years and you have opened my eyes to all kinds of good stuff. You do great work and it will be great to continue reading you without having to patronize these Voice scumbags. Best wishes. JC

Posted by: Jonathan at June 30, 2008 4:41 PM

congrats man. you will be greatly missed. irreplaceable, relaly. and i'd think twice about retiring "Status Ain't Hood." especially if you plan on blogging at this new secret place. and you better!

i'm actually very sad. this is the only blog i read all the time, and i read it everyday. thanks.

as a fellow music writer, i've really enjoyed status ain't hood. thanks for all of your work! :)

in terms of musical taste, and apparently physically and vocally, you seem to be a stretched out version of myself, but a miles better writer with a hell of an insight. i discovered this blog about 2 years ago and it's been a daily read ever since. even if it's something i don't care about, you were usually able to put an interesting spin on things. i'm definitely gonna miss having this as part of my day, but i'm excited to see what you've got cooking up now. congrats on the success of status ain't hood, and good luck with your next project. you've definitely inspired me to get into music journalism as well.

ps: co-sign on continuing your ridiculous podcasts (your incredulous reaction to the beat on wiz khalifa's "say yeah" always had me rollin for some reason: "like i guess it's a good song, i guess."

Posted by: walkmasterflex at June 30, 2008 6:18 PM

Yeah, we need those goofy podcasts. For real.

Posted by: D.D. at June 30, 2008 6:46 PM

Great job over the years, Tom.

One of this blog's biggest draws has always been its subject matter and your ability to comment on wildly different genres and cultural topics. I rarely found myself skipping posts for lack of interest, which is fairly rare on most blogs.

Hopefully you are allowed similar freedoms in your future writing.

One of the cool things about the internet is that I don't have to care where you're sitting or who is paying you, you just have to keep up the blogging. So keep it up dude, and over to dip dip dive we go.

Started going through Dip Dip Dive, and came across this gym

For the week of 3/26/04:
Top 10 People
4 - Chris Benoit. Speaking of wrestling. I forgot to mention this last week, but the Crippler won the world championship at Wrestlemania and how awesome is that? Dude deserved it like no other. The sheer intensity Benoit brings to everything he does is ridiculous.

Posted by: dom corleone at June 30, 2008 8:34 PM

Those Dip Dip Dive posts are cool to see.

I'm glad I got to read this blog on the regular, if only for a couple of months. Ever since a Google search for "Clipse + The Wire" led me here one bored afternoon at work.

Posted by: Joseph at June 30, 2008 8:35 PM

After reading your blog for a year, I wrote a review of the Roots' Rising Down for my college newspaper. Before I wrote the review, while I was writing it, and after I had reread it ten times, I kept saying to myself, "This is just a bad SAH, this is just a bad SAH." And it was true. But you know what? The review was still pretty damn good.

I don't know, I think that says a lot. Thank you so much for your work, I'll be looking out for more of it (book, book, 33 1/3, book!), and I'll be telling my friends to do the same.

Tom,

Thank you for a great run on status ain't hood, probably the blogging equivalent of Wayne from Carter II to Drought III. No one wrote more or better about music over the last few years. You've turned me on to a ton of music and made me think about what I like and why.

Good luck with your new gig. I'll be reading it where ever you end up.

TOM I GOT IT. For your final podcast, take the "A Milli" beat and spit a freestyle. Aw man you'd have us all rollin'. Do it for the fans!! YOU WON'T.

Posted by: Anonymous at June 30, 2008 9:10 PM

Bummer on this ending (new beginning?). This blog reminded me a lot of the great old music writing I used to read in the old SF Bay Guardian growing up (e.g Oliver Wang) with the love of music and willingness to call it as you saw it. I liked how you kept your interests diverse and were always down to introduce some random music to your listeners. I also liked the podcasts and could reasonably rely on really liking at least one song every couple weeks or so. Good job, keep at it.

ps. I'm bummed that your scientific comparison of DJ Khaled cuts didn't make your top of list. Loved the line about being pissed to have to compare two Fat Joe verses.

Posted by: pm at June 30, 2008 9:13 PM

I second pm's love for the "Holla At Me"/"We Takin' Over" column. I'll definitely be looking out for your new gig when it starts.

Posted by: Garrett at June 30, 2008 9:57 PM

Tom, first with your Pitchfork reviews and then with SAH and your podcasts, you introduced to more interesting hip hop than I ever would have heard otherwise. You're also spectacular at the tough-to-make-awesome liveblogging format.

I'll also follow you wherever you go, but in the meantime, thanks for the years of great writing.

Tom, this blog has been amazing—the most reliable source for intelligent, understanding, and relatable pop music criticism. Irreplaceable on the Interwebs. A voice for us overanalytical white kids who feel hip-hop even if we're not a part of it. Like the previous posters, I'll follow you wherever you end up, and I hope there'll be podcasts there.

Best of luck.

Posted by: Roger at July 1, 2008 3:04 AM

Wrote this in the latest No Trivia comment section, but thought I might as well reproduce it here so you'd read it.

The Status Ain't Hood: Death of a Dynasty is way more emotionally affecting than it has any right to be considering that you're is still going to be around (although maybe the voice isn't). Status was the first rap blog I regularly read, starting in late 2006/early 2007. Shortly after I started reading, I went away to do some volunteer work in Kenya. But that work in Kenya ended up including a lot of time spent in a cheap internet cafe with a small portion of that time being productive. Eventually I started to check Status every time I went to that cafe, almost as this weird sort of way to stay in touch with America from such a far away place. There were a lot of great reads here, including the best Biggie eulogy I ever read. But what I remember most about that internet cafe was the music. They only had one CD and it was this pretty crappy yet kind of varied and interesting mix. It had the Family Affair remix, and various hits from Celine Dion, Akon, Kenny Rogers, some British boy band I'd never heard of, and a few other acts that escape me now. In it's own way it was kind of this perfect match with the your aesthetic, this weird hodgepodge of stuff that didn't really belong together, yet just kind of thrown in indiscriminately. You know, Late Night MTV: Total Anarchy indeed. I'll miss you, until you come back at least. I mean Status Ain't Hood once kinda defined America for me, and how many blogs can say that?

Posted by: Suckapunkin' at July 1, 2008 3:46 AM

Others have said it but I'll say it too: this was my favourite music blog. I'll subscribe to dip dip dive, so please let us know there where you end up writing. Good luck.

Posted by: blackleg at July 1, 2008 4:53 AM

you always outsmarted the real hip-hop set man, even if i thought some of your opinions were off (Young Buck's album sucked, Wu-Tang's last one OK not good, Bun B's new album sucks...i'm sure there's other not as recent ones,) but then i agreed with you way more than any "wellllllllll here's some hip hop that sounds stuck in '94" trying too hard purists.

not that i have a problem with '94 rap just to clarify, Ready to Die's the shit. just saying.

to ass-kiss and be condescending for a sec i think the Pitbull: Better Than Nas post is probably the best example of how much better a writer you are than any of those kids, not to name name(s) but they know. regardless of it's accuracy (HHID is one of the only Nas albums i like as a whole) it just showed 'em as a bunch of way too serious nerds who pretend that your more analytical and reasoned tastes are just evil white indie hipster cultural oppression. convenient. seriously, anyone who couldn't see that being tongue-in-cheek, or saw it as tongue-in-cheek but thought you did it for "publicity" is a fucking idiot.

anyway, not to end on a total buzzkill note (oh wait...) so later, look forward to the new project.

Posted by: Trey Stone at July 1, 2008 5:42 AM

Status Ain't Hood was my favourite music writing anywhere, print or online. Can't wait for the next thing.

Posted by: Ned at July 1, 2008 5:50 AM

Your blogs were always entertaining, even if you did overuse the term "victory lap" (usually in reference to whatever Lil Wayne had done most recently). Best of luck and looking forward to following your work at the next thing...

I plan on following you wherever you take your blog. You led me to Da Drought 3 and turned me into a Lil' Wayne fan. Doing stuff like that is probably the best and most worthwhile thing you can do as a rap critic.

But if its going to become your regular spot, Switch up the template on your Dip Dip Dive blog. That shit is hard on the eyes right now.

Damn man, I've never commented you, but I've faithfully read Status Ain't Hood every other day, whenever it was updated.

Although I don't always agree with you, I find that the very existence of this blog to begin with is a pretty bold undertaking given the antipathy toward your ilk that springs up from time to time and I commend you for being a fresh voice in a field filled with self important pretension and bloviating.

You've managed to straddle the two worlds of gritty (well, as gritty as a big white dude like you can be) hip hop writing and pitchfork nerdiness perfectly, and thats why I read you.

Great job for always making things interesting. If there's one hallmark of your body of work on Village Voice, its a clear point of view that has managed to be a stronghold in the most fickle of journalistic genres.

Without question, Status Ain't Hood has been the blog I always look forward to, you don't have these small tidbits like other blogs that are half assed, but fully developed posts with insight that always surprises me in its cutting precision.

Well, I say this with the exception of that bullshit ass "Pitbull is better than Nas" post.

That was just ridiculous.

All in all, you're a great writer and I wish you well in your future pursuits. It takes alot of courage to move to New York and just do something like this and encourages young cats like me to continue pursuing studies and a career in writing.

Thanks for all the great reads.

I posted a version of this comment over on your blog, DocZeus, but people actually read this blog, so I'm repeating it here.

Inspired by your unusually smarmy -- even for you -- comment upthread, which led to the awful realization that I am somehow complicit in your blogging career, I am moved to say:

You are a festering boil on the ass of the already pretty filthy rap blogging world. I am mortified that my attempt to get you to shut up and go away a few years ago with a sidelong dig has actually resulted in a blog that you can actually plug in this comments section. You are the Jann Wenner of the rap-blog world: i.e. you've had your ears firmly and proudly plugged four about twelve years now and are promulgating such forward-thinking opinions such as "Southern rappers all suck," "Hey, you know, Wu-Tang really WERE great, weren't they?" Say what you want about Tom's sometimes-questionable taste and goofy prose, but the dude made it to where he is through his own momentum and has the courage of his convictions.

From the bottom of my heart: Fuck you.

Wow, now I feel much better.

Posted by: Jayson Greene at July 2, 2008 12:06 PM

Dearest Jayson,

Let me offer my apologies.

I'm sorry the Village Voice will not be giving you a paid staff position like you had hoped and you will have to continue to accept rejected Rick Ross interviews to pay the bills.

I'm sorry that Tom doesn't love you the way you want him to love you.

I'm sorry that your blog isn't as popular as mine.

I'm sorry that your so bitter that the South didn't get its recognition that you feel insecure whenever somebody criticizes them.

I'm sorry that your so insecure with your life that an off-handed comment written two years ago on a Scritti Politti post has gotten you so hot and bothered that you are writing insane rants on a message board.

I'm sorry that life didn't work out for you the way you wanted it.

We all deal.

Now politely, go fuck yourself.

Love,

The Good Doctor Zeus
